Coffee

Harriet looked out the grimy windows of the 'coffee shop' that Caleb had chosen. To be honest, it was less of a coffee shop than a petrol station.

Rain beat the roof of the small building, each drop a bullet on the frail roof. The sickening smell of petrol seemed to extend to all corners of the shop, clashing with the bitter smell of coffee and creating a foul mixture.

They were holed up in a tiny booth, waiting for Caleb to get back with the coffee. Mina was sitting across from her, leaning, with her elbows on the table, towards Kadriq. He was silent, and looked like he might kill her soon.

Mina was meant to be a genius or a prodigy or something like that, but apparently it killed her to admit it. Harriet had never got her courage up enough to ask her, and she probably never would. Her hair was hanging down onto the table, curly, bright green strands. She kind of wanted to reach over and tuck it behind her ear.

She looked sideways, and he turned his eyes on her. They were huge, lamplike, and golden. Like honey. He was The Golden Mage, the Chosen One. That was just talk. He was nothing special; just a teenaged mage with a penchant for black. And he wasn't very powerful, just one of a kind.

Right now, her nerves were jumping. They would be leaving for Vienna the next day, and she needed to suceed in this, or Laar would positively kill her.

Harriet wasn't even sure why she was here. She was never sent on missions, and definitely not stealth missions. Her magic was highly destructive, very loud, and very visible. And it was always a last resort.

The sound of Freddie Mercury drifted through the aisles to their seats, and she relaxed slightly. She liked Queen.

Caleb returned with their coffee, putting the tray down in front of them and sighing, before he sat down beside Mina, pushing her to make room for himself. Harriet raised an eyebrow, turning to look at him with a tilted head. "What took you so long?"

"The guy behind the counter."

"What did you do?" Harriet's eyes widened. She almost didn't want to know.

"Mind out of the gutter." He waved a napkin with a number written on it in the air, and Mina snatched it out of his hand.

"Hey!" Caleb protested, and she held a hand up, reading it.

"His name's Brandon."

"Sounds like a douchebag." Harriet said, leaning across the table, chin resting on her hand.

"Sounds like you." Caleb countered, mimicking her position with added flair.

"Oh fuck off." She said, but couldn't help smiling. Caleb was an asshole, but he was a hilarious asshole. And a swordsman. And a super soldier. Basically some Captain America shit. She'd known him since she was twelve, and she liked to think they were close. But she honestly didn't know. People instantly liked him, and Harriet could definitely not relate.

Harriet took one of the cups, and held it between her hands. It warmed them up a lot, actually. She was always cold. It either had something to do with her powers, or it was just... Her.

She decided that she should drink the coffee before it got cold, and took a sip, instantly spitting it out. Holy fuck.

"Caleb!"

Harriet dug through her bag, pulling out a bottle of water and sipping at it. "Fuck you."

He simply grinned back at her. Asshole.

Kadriq looked dubiously down at the coffee he chose, and pushed it away.

"Smart." Caleb said, giving him a nod.

He didn't reply.

"So ya just don't talk." Mina said, leaning onto Caleb and giving a yawn, before poking his cheek. "I'm actually tired, you dick."

"You aren't driving."

"I could."

"You can't. Dumbass."

"I'm will."

Caleb raised his hands in mock surrender. "If you want to crash, go ahead."

"Hey, it's being funded by the King. 'Course I'm gonna crash it."

"Mina. Please don't. Laar will be breathing down my neck for the next decade." Harriet got up, holding her hand out for the keys. Caleb handed them to her. "Finish up quick. We have to be at the hotel soon."

She walked to the door, Kadriq following her. It was still raining, and she swore it had gotten heavier. Well. Nothing for it.

Steeling herself, Harriet pushed open the door and broke into a run, unlocking the car as she did so. She threw the door open and tumbled inside, shutting the door behind her. Kadriq climbed in the other side, pulling out his phone.

"So... How are you?"

Silence.
