Chapter 75
Of course, I was angry. I was fuming, to be exact. Everything was a blur. Until I reached a vast warehouse or an old rusty building. The tribal drink had been playing with my mind because when I realized what I did, I regretted it. I shouldn’t have said those things to her. I wondered.
“Boss is mad. Stay guarded for the rest of the night.” I overheard two men who guarded the small gate at the back. The front door was heavy, and so was every single door. But this was a small gate, perhaps a storage unit. The men wore loose pants and weirdly designed shirts. They were floral with a hint of pastel colors and a belt around their shoulder hanging low to their waist that had a gun and knife attached to it.
They looked roughed. I carefully took on the entire surrounding I will be facing. There were men everywhere. Anthony told me they change their shift around midnight and I had only five minutes to get into the storage room.
Sneakily, I somehow hid under a van full of goods that stood outside the door as the men checked them. I was certain that it would rain as the cloud was pitch black, of course making it hard for me to make any move. I slowly crawled under the van and held onto my dear life when I felt it moving. Holding onto the fixed part of the van, I prayed I could just enter inside without those dogs smelling me.
Those were bulldogs barking hungrily at the van. I could hear nothing because of the noise of the engine. My hands burnt at how hot the metal of the van was and I had no time to think of any other route.
Thankfully, I realized the van had made its way toward the storage unit that was loaded with lines of bags and boxes. Suddenly, my hands slipped when the van stopped at one point and my ground shook, making me realize the van was being taken to the upper floor. There were lots of people working, and none of them bothered to look at the van. I was skeptical about my next move when suddenly I felt the van moving and I had no time to catch onto the metal below it. I was exposed.
Rolling towards a sack beside me, I hid behind it when I noticed the men walking towards where the van was. Then I realized it was an open accelerator. The scenery was scary and I had goosebumps all over my body.
First off, I checked the security cameras but found none where I was hiding. I checked for rooms or something that could let me find where she was, then my eyes landed on a small room with “Staffroom” written over it.
Squatting my way towards it, I saw there was a huge timer hanging on the top floor that said they had three minutes left for their shift to finish. I walked towards the staff room and took a deep breath when I found no one inside.
Changing into their clothes, I placed a hat on my head and a mask covering my face. Not having time to check anything further, I walked out of it in search of the room where they would have kept her. I knew nothing about it, but Anthony asked me to look for an employee having serial number 593 on his badge. It was pretty difficult when I looked at hundreds of people working at a time.
Keeping a safe distance between other people, I walked in a row to where they were going. But then suddenly I was dragged out of the line and I scrambled inside.
“Shush..” I heard a man too close to me whisper.
“593” he introduced himself and then my eyes landed on his badge, giving me a sign of relief.
“You have a death wish.” He concluded when he took off my mask, looking at my face.
“Where is my mother?” I asked, not wasting my time.
“Chill bro. Keep your horses at low. The guys here know only to chop off heads even before asking your name.” He whispered as we looked at the men walking out of the building.
“Then why are you risking your life?” I asked.
“That’s none of your concern.” He snapped, and I furrowed my brows as I could feel I saw him somewhere.
“Don’t look at me like I’m your crush. Let me escort you to the jail.” He said, gesturing towards a tunnel.
“Jail?” I asked, baffled.
“Yea, after what your mother did, she was bound to be jailed when got caught.” He said, shrugging his shoulder as if this was no jog deal.
“Watch your mouth,” I said.
“Ah, as if I care. You should be aware of how Master Muris treats someone who hurts his pride.” He said when he jumped into a small cave-like structure.
“And you are risking your life for” I stopped, as I hardly was interested in even knowing.
“Of course, because I owe your wife an apology for which I can give my life,” he said, even though I was not interested in hearing it.
“Apology?”
“That’s a story for another time. If we met. Now, shall we concentrate on where we are going?” He caught my collar as I was about to step on a wire.
“Cable towards the ropeway. It will stop the ropeway and they will be suspicious.” He said and jumped out of the tunnel. I did the same and saw the horrid scene in front of me.
Every five miles stood a pole where a person was tied up with gashes all over his body. The area smelt horrid. Metallic blood and human waste mingled into the air. This place smells drastic, even horrid from my dungeon. I thought.
“Master Muris enjoys this.” He said when we saw a few men dragging a lifeless body and hanging him up onto a ropeway.
“Keep your head down. Don’t even try to make eye contact with anyone.” He said as we walked past all the cages lined up in the clear sky.
“I’m here to feed Ms. Isabella.” I heard him say. When I heard the cry, I was about to lift my head.
“Don’t move. I said don’t move. Not even an inch.” I felt a firm grip on my hand and he placed a plate full of food I saw him holding on my hand.
“It’s been a day already.” The guy in front of us said and opened the door for us.
“One guy is enough.” He repeated.
“My hands are injured. I can’t carry the plate and he is new. He doesn’t know the route.” 593 said, showing his hand full of scratches.
“I give you 10 minutes.” He said, and soon we went inside a small dark room.
“I said I’m not eating anything. Let me meet Muris first!” I heard her. My mother, who I never knew was alive. My grip on the plate slipped, but he caught up.
“Stay healthy for us to take you out of it.” He whispered to her, walking closer to her. I didn’t raise my head, I couldn’t. I stood there moving just hearing her painful cries.
“Who?” she asked.
“I have no one.” She repeated, giving me a pang of pain in my chest.
“I have to tell Muris that it was all a lie. That Liara D’Waner tried to frame me by giving off my identity through her assistant. I will kill that whore. I will tell Muris about her next plans.” She kept on saying and I couldn’t breathe. Liara’s assistant?
“You have to stay alive for us to take you out of here.” He repeated, but she didn’t buzz.
“Shut your mouth, woman!” A man came rushing inside and hit her head harder, making us gasp as she just blacked out, closing her eyes.
“Slut doesn’t even know when to shut up.” He spat and I saw red as my blood pumped harder when I hit the guy hard on his face when he didn’t see that coming.
“What did you do?!” 593 whispers yelled as the man lay lifelessly on the ground.
“Damn you!” He cursed and started changing their places. I saw what he was doing. He placed the guard on the bed and covered him with the duvet, switching places. I stood beside him, awkwardly holding my mother’s motionless body.
“It started pouring. This day couldn’t be any better.” He growled and I could feel his anxiety because I was feeling the same thing.
“We better start moving before the break ends.” He placed another bedsheet on the floor and asked me to roll my mother on it. Everything seemed so bizarre that I couldn’t think straight. The roof of the room started dripping, and I could only muster enough courage to carry her out. In the dark, I wasn’t able to see her clear face and now that we rolled her inside a bedsheet, I could imagine how stuffed she felt.
“Where are you going?!” He yelled at me when I absentmindedly walked towards the exit.
“Exit?” I pointed.
“Back door, you idiot.” He threw his hands in the air, frustrated, and I chose to not reply to him at the moment. We hid carefully, masking our faces, and carried my mom on my shoulder. 593 kicked me as we were almost there towards the small room-like door. I’ve seen this before. The storeroom.
“Don’t look back and run!” I heard him yell and was confused why he yelled, I turned around only to find that they stabbed him in his stomach and he caged the door through which we entered the storeroom.
“What the “ I cursed under my breath but found a few men charging toward me. “Keep running.” He winced and said through pants when the men kept on piling into the room. I couldn’t find the exit and when a man started marching at me, I slammed the chair behind me onto his head and he fell back, making me stagger a few steps back.
“Zearo, to your right! Run!” I heard him yell again. He was bleeding but constantly tried to shut the door. I took a deep breath and placed my mother on the floor gently and helped him. Of course, many others kept piling up, but I was not the one who’d let the other person die. Marching forward, I lifted an iron rod from the floor and smashed it on the guy’s head, who hit me in my face.
I made my way, pushing and hitting every single one of them towards 593. We both closed the gates and pushed a vast box in front of it to keep them from coming inside.
“You are severely bleeding, man.” I clutched the injured part of his body, but the blood kept on oozing out of it. ‘’Watch out!" He yelled, and I turned around in a second, but I felt blood splattering on my face as the guy who was supposed to attack me fell on me instead lifelessly.
“You’ve got to be kidding me!” 593 exclaimed, and I wiped the blood off my face. “Anthony?” I saw a hooded man who swiftly charged at the workers who kept on piling up.
“We have little time. Run!” He said without looking back. He had masked his face, but I could recognize by how well built he was.
“Will you keep staring at him?” 593 asked me as he held Isabella on his shoulder.
“You are injured. I will carry her.” I said, but then in the next second, I saw a guy running towards us. Pushing him aside, I smashed a bottle on the table and held it as a defense.
I was about to stab him in his stomach when I heard a loud wail and that distracted me, to which the opponent struck right on my head with a glass bottle he was holding. I winced in pain and felt a liquid stain on my face. But I cared less when I pushed that guy away from me and looked back to where 593 was lying.
He lay on top of my mother with a knife stuck on his chest. Anthony crushed the guy's neck who stabbed him but was too late. He vomited blood, and I rushed at him.
“You cannot overpower them. They will keep on coming. Just run away from that gate.” He said, his voice kept on fainting.
“You are coming with us,” I said, but he shook his head.
“I don’t want to be a burden to anyone. Save her, not me. My part is done.” He said and coughed out some more blood.
“Anthony, tell her I successfully played my part. Now it’s her turn.” He said to Anthony, who clutched two guys and pushed them away.
“Don’t be ridiculous. You are coming with us.” He snapped but to no avail. He was gone just like that.
“Damnit! Ahmed.” I heard Anthony curse and then I knew his name was Ahmed.
“We need to go.” I closed my eyes for a second and heard Anthony.
“They are coming. We need to run.” He repeated when we heard footsteps approaching us.
I tried to carry her but didn’t know when, but there was a cut on my abdomen that didn’t let me carry her.
“I will carry her. Just open the damn gate.’’ He looked frustrated, and I was in pain.
“Damn him.” He cursed again, and I looked at Ahmed’s lifeless body on the ground.
“Let’s go.” I said and ran towards the small gate outside of the tunnel of the storeroom. The guards were fast approaching and as soon as we made our way out, we were drenched by the heavy rain. But that didn’t stop us.
“We need to hide somewhere.” He said when we saw men everywhere. The rain kept on pouring heavily, drenching our bodies.
“Forest,” I said, and he nodded. We stuck towards the walls of the building, hiding from the lights that were shown everywhere. Soon enough, we entered the dense forest and by that time we didn’t stop running. My body screamed with pain from everywhere but I didn’t stop and neither did he.
“Let’s just not stop until we reach my car,” I said, but then sudden lighting blinded my vision and I crashed into it.
