Chapter 35

No motherfucker could mess up with my brain as she did. Every time she blew my mind, that ended up with me taking a stupid decision. She knew nothing about my past, yet found out every fucking detail when she wanted to.

Gulping down the liquor, I loathed the day when I helped her. And acting as her husband could be the worst decision I took in my entire life.

"You have had enough!." Warm hands snatched the glass from me. My eyes landed on the devil herself.

"You want to control the amount I drink now?" I asked through gritted teeth.

"I would if I had to." She stated as if it's a matter of fact. Not bothering to look at her, I grabbed another glass but froze when her warm hands touched my face.

"What do you think you are doing?" I asked. Curious, as she was always against the public display of affection.

"Wanted to shift your attention away from the liquor." She smiled. She genuinely smiled at me. I must be dreaming.

"I'm sorry." She whispered, and it was as if I could read her thoughts. She was genuinely sorry for using my mom.

"I shouldn't have brought her up. But I do have to say that you gotta keep your personal life a little secret. I'd appreciate it if you understood why I'm doing all this." The last line was a mere whisper, but I heard it pretty well.

"Princess, Son, you guys have to start the celebration. We all are waiting for you to cut the cake!" Dima looked so pretty with the pastel-colored gown and slight makeup. No fancy touch, nothing. She came to us and beamed with joy when she mentioned the cake.

I felt movement beside me and turned towards Liara, who glared at Dima. "Dima, you didn't have to do all this! I don't think I'm comfortable with all this." Her expression was cold and I noticed Dima's smile flatter.

"Princess, it's just a ritual. There is so much that you have to do as a newly wedded but we canceled it all. This is something which your mom would have done if she'd..." She froze and turned towards the gathering. I could see she was contemplating.

Before I could step in, Dima continued, "Okay, anyway if you don't want to do this, then alright." And walked away without glancing at us.

"Why'd you have to be a spoilt sport? It's just a cake." I said. I couldn't even understand why she backs down whenever she needs to be in the spotlight.

"I didn't ask you for any advice." She snapped and walked away from me. I shrugged as I should be habituated by now by the way she behaves.

The party went on as people who I didn't even bother acknowledging came and congratulated me. They asked me, what do I do for a living? I honestly answered that I work as a DJ. They stared at me as if I had a dirty face or a mark on my face and walked away.

I didn't bother dwelling on the matter, as I knew exactly what they thought. A gold digger perhaps. I chuckled.

"And here comes the wedding cake!" My head whipped in the direction and I saw Keryl, Liara's aunt I suppose, spoke through the mike in the center of the stage.

As if on cue, an enormous cake entered the venue. White ribbons around the table. Elegant white chocolate flowers and petals beautifully lined up in the seven-layered cake. It matched the venue so beautifully. I was so impressed with the entire theme. Simple yet elegant. I attended multiple parties, but none was this soothing to the eyes. I'd end up dead drunk after all of them.

"Where is the groom?!" I raised my hands and made my presence known in an instant, but couldn't find Liara anywhere. Do I have to cut the cake alone? I wondered.

I walked past the people who paved the way for me. Soon after, today was a fairytale song played in the background and Liara along with her friends came from the other side in front of me.

I sucked in a deep breath when I noticed something changed in Liara's attire and when she came a little closer; I found myself even more mesmerized than I already was. She wore an exquisite veil. It matched her attire and her friends held the other end, flaunting the pretty veil.

She didn't wear it before. Why wear it now? I was curious, but shrugged it off as I found her grumpy face. She must have been forced to wear it. I chuckled as she looked cute with a scrunchy nose and furrowed eyebrows.

Сan you feel this magic in the air?

It must have been the way you kissed me

Fell in love when I saw you standin' there

It must have been the way

Today was a fairytale

The fireworks started around me and Liara, as we were now on the center stage all alone along with the cake. I wanted to laugh at my condition, as I was finding it amusing. It must be every groom's dream to marry his love in such a grand way. But I, with a grumpy woman, and a beautiful cake. What a terrible combination.

The song was pleasant, I had never heard it before but it was sung beautifully. A perfect choice for the event. Liara held the knife and looked me in the eye and then towards the knife. I took it as my cue to join her. I held her hand gently, and we both cut the cake. It was a red velvet cake iced with white cream, I suppose?

I watched her as she carefully picked a spoon full of cake and brought it near my mouth. I took it and did the same.

"Now, for the first time as a married couple, let's give it up for Liara and Zearo!!" Keryl announced, and the crowd cheered for us. I snaked my hands around Liara and she took a few steps closer to me. A small smile on her face as she kept glancing at a particular person in the crowd. I followed her line of sight and saw a man in his grey tux staring at Liara with parted lips in surprise.

A weird feeling rose in the pit of my stomach as I looked at the woman who stood beside him. Her features were the same as the women in my business. The vexed expression on her face made her look like she-devil. Or what if she already was a devil in Liar's life? I asked myself and glanced at Liara, who for the first time looked genuinely happy. There was not even a single trace of discomfort or anger. I shook my head as I found it pretty hard to understand this woman sometimes.

"You okay there?" I asked, honestly curious about whatever was brewing in her mind. But she surprised me by tiptoeing on her legs and pecking on my cheeks. The crowd cheered louder. She looked at me and I couldn't help but notice her blue eyes had a weird golden shade around the iris. Like a fire around the darkness.

We were in a different world of our own. When suddenly I saw Emma walking towards us and Liara handing her the veil. The cake soon faded away. As I was about to step out of the center stage, Keryl's voice boomed again, "And now, it's time for the bride and the groom to dance!" I felt Liara go stiff. I chuckled when I watched her change her expression from shocked to expressionless in a nanosecond.

"Will my wife give me the honor to dance with her on stage?" I asked loud enough for every single person present to hear. Every single person cheered for us and Liara looked at me, dumbstruck. Her cheeks gleamed a bright shade of pink when the spotlight landed on us.

"Everyone is waiting." I reminded her, and she inhaled in a deep breath. "Believe me, I wouldn't drop you," I assured her, and the surrounding erupted into laughter and she shook her head, a small smile struggling to surface.

"Yes." she said and hesitantly looked at me. Her hands in the air, allowing me to take them. I took her hands gently. The guests were cheering for us at the top of their lungs. The spotlight focused on us, moving along with us. Her face showed no emotion, but a little lift of her lips made me aware that she was smiling within.

"Did you dance before?" I asked to be sure what to do next. She nodded and placed her left hand on my shoulder, and I gently placed my right hand on her waist. The other held her right hand as the song "Perfect" began playing.

"Mia must have selected this awfully slow song." She muttered, not expecting me to hear it, but I heard it loud and clear.

"It's perfect for the event," I stated, and I was honest about it. The song, music, and lyrics suited the party.

"Baby, let your body loose, otherwise we'd look like two amateurs dancing," I suggested, but earned a glare.

"Don't baby me." She snapped at me but soon smiled, covering her anger.

"I will baby you, baby. Unless you let loose and sway along with the music." I winked at her and pushed her away a little, not leaving her hand. The next second, I pulled her back and whirled her around by clutching her waist. I felt her letting go and swaying along with the music. We started with slow movements and soon picked up with the song when it hit its high note.

Baby, I'm dancing in the dark with you between my arms

Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song

When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath

But you heard it, darling, you look perfect tonight

I couldn't stop myself as words left my mouth even before I could realize. I sang along the song and looked her in the eyes when I whispered; you look perfect tonight. She gave a tight-lipped smile, realizing I sang it along with the song, but I knew I meant it.

Soon, we found that the song finished, but we didn't stop. I could say; we didn't want to. We were enjoying each other's company, and that being said; the song changed. I saw a small smile on her face as the music began.

She loosened her grip around me and moved away. I knew she was into something, but then she shocked me when she sang the song with such a melodious voice.

Heartbeats fast

Colors and promises

How to be brave?

How can I love when I'm afraid to fall?

But watching you stand alone

All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow

One step closer...

She took a step closer, raised both her hands, and gestured to me to hold them. I behaved like her puppet and did how she wanted me to. The next second, I moved along with her body perfectly in the song's sink when it played,

I have died every day waiting for you

Darling, don't be afraid

I have loved you for a thousand years

I'll love you for a thousand more.

We were too engrossed in the song and she danced so gracefully, tempting me to do the same. We mixed the waltz, salsa, and contemporary form of dancing in the song. Her posture, steps, and expressions are so outstanding.

Every time the song reached its high, I lifted her gently and twirled her around as she maintained her posture throughout the song. Her eyes never detach mine. At one time, I sang along with her when the lyric was,

And all along I believed I would find you

Time has brought your heart to me

I have loved you for a thousand years

I'll love you for a thousand more

One step closer........

As the song was about to end, she held my right hand and closed the distance between us by twirling and when she was almost near my chest; I lifted her by her waist and she bent a little back into a perfect posture as the song ended.

We couldn't even hold our breath as we were breathless. Slowly, I took my time putting her down. Her body touched my chest and I could feel every curve of her. Slowly placing her down, I smiled at her and she returned it with a small smile and a nod.

We thought that's it and started parting ways but to our horror, the crowd started shouting, "KISS, KISS, KISS!" And we both stood there completely uncomfortable with the condition we were in. I'd say I wouldn't mind kissing her any time, but her shocked and sour expression forced me to take a step back.
