Chapter 15
Been there, have witnessed many gory scenes, some crafted with my own hands, but none ripped my heart out like the one I saw today.
When I think back to the time I entered the office,
“Liara!” Exclaimed Anthony in the top of his lungs. I frantically looked at the shattered desk and the floor but didn’t find the people behind this chaos.
A deafening crash echoed throughout the chamber, startling all of us. My hands sweaty and an unrecognizable fear clouding my vision.
I heard gasps and scream delaying my reaction for a second. Narrowing my eyes, I glanced at the chaotic area and suddenly my eyes landed on something or I’d rather say someone and I stayed rooted where I was.
A man sprawling on the top of a young woman amid the blood and glass pool. Shattered fragments of glass scattered behind the desk and blood all over the floor. A flower vase lying lifeless with its arms and crippled limbs, stained with the blood of who knows whose.
I didn’t bother to glance back at the three figures standing beside me, instead took a walk further towards the entangled pair. Kicking all the shattered glass pieces on my path, I rushed towards the two. I can hardly imagine the weight of the man lying above the lady. He is enormous. Not fat huge, but built huge. Broad shoulders, the height of about 6.2 feet still shorter than me, curly hair and round ass. A sudden jolt of pain halted my movement. Lifting my foot, I noticed a sharp piece of glass had pierced through my boots, penetrating my skin. Holding the piece of glass, I drew it out of my boots and the intolerable pain followed suit. Taking a sharp breath, I headed towards the injured parties.
I peered at the three figures for the last time, still standing with a terrified expression on their faces. Shaking my head, I shoved the bulky man away from Liara. I spotted a presence near me and then saw that Anthony finally snapped back to reality.
“I will deal with the guy, take Liara to the hospital as soon as possible! Emma, Aria! Guys!” I heard Anthony’s frantic voice and squinted at the guy’s injury. And his body was a wreck. I could only come up with one theory, this girl is responsible for his state.
I looked at the source of his injury, coated with blood all over her body herself. Hair sticking to her face, bruises because of glass pieces all over her hands. I picked her up a little, tenderly withdrew the hair aside from her face. When I finally saw her face, even if blood and dirt layered on her skin, I can recognize her. Sunlight fell directly into her heavenly face, glowing like a lone star enlightening the streets at night. Blood whipped near her cheeks. Her presence as if a portrait came to existence straight into my arms.
The same face that hindered my dream till today, an innocent look behind the terrifyingly angelic charm. The girl who took my breath away the night in “The Shimmer’s Night” falling limply in my arms after knocking the crap out of a gigantic man.
“Liara," her name rolled down my tongue, fluttering my body and a peculiar buzz into my veins.
“Zearo! Hurry please!” I took an audibly long breath, carrying her unconscious body that felt like cotton, and then strode towards the exit. Emma and Aria taking a private route, not disrupting the work environment. I couldn’t find Anthony and that asshole, though. My mind doing various flips about how to kill that bastard secretly.
*****
After carefully settling her in the hospital bed, I, as a stranger, remained outside the doctor’s chamber. My brain recalling her eyes and that innocence in her soul. My body visibly shivered with just the mere thought of her tender body that night.
“Any updates?” I urged a tensed tiny woman stomping the marble floor of the hospital.
“None yet, they reported that she has multiple bruises but nothing severe. Will wait until she wakes up.” Emma muttered almost to herself.
“Okay," I trailed off, not knowing what I should do now.
“Zearo, thank you so much. But you can go now. It’s already 7 in the evening, Oliver mentioned that you work in some night club starting from 8, right?” Emma asked, extending me a cup of hot espresso.
“Yup, I assume I should get going,” I admitted, but then an unusual uneasiness enveloped my heart.
“Don’t worry, I will update you.” Patting at my back, she answered with a weak smile.
*********************
“Earth to Zearo!” I jerked when I heard someone sitting near me.
“I assumed you slept already!” Ugh, her squeaky voice is provoking a major headache.
“Eva, it’s 4 in the morning, go home.” I sounded like a dad now. Gosh!. Yup, I know you can’t fathom the awful situation I’m in right now. This chick is the one who called me “A fine specimen” one day. She spent a tremendous amount merely to have some drinks with me once a week. They offered me some extra cash to sit with her. Julie stated that it’s no big deal and if I want to then I can turn down this offer. But who in his right mind would say no to extra pay?
“No, I thought, you will take me with you,” she slurred, pouting. Now, I regret not turning this offer down.
“No can do young lady, you are tipsy and you need rest. “ I answered as gently as I could, pulling out her deathly grip on my hands.
“Fine! But promise me, tomorrow you are taking me out with you!” Grabbing my sleeves, she stood and lifted her little finger.
“What?” I inquired, lifting my eyebrows and staring at her little finger.
“Pinky promise duh!” She exclaimed, throwing her hands in the air as if me not knowing the thing ‘pinky promise’ is a felony.
“Yeah, whatever. Wait! I was instructed to have drinks with you once a week. I’m not taking you anywhere, nor meeting you tomorrow.” I gritted my teeth, trying to sound calm in front of a 17-year-old girl.
“I will pay you to double!” She yelled, bringing her body near me, practically caressing her boobs to my chest."I know you don’t receive sufficient reward. Don’t worry, my father gives me ample pocket money. I will pay for youuuuu." She mumbled, her breath fanning my neck.
“No, I’m paid fine. Just go home already! You are drunk.” I pushed her lightly, allowing a gap in between.
I scanned for any of her companions in the bar. When I found one, I nudged the little girl and pointed towards them. “Look, there is your friend. Go, they will take you home.” I whispered.
“They are not my friends, dummy, they just wanted an entry here. So, I paid an extra payment to your bouncers.” She admitted, knocking another drink down her throat.
I shook my head at this spoiled kid and inquired, “what’s your father’s name?”, anger seething inside my body, how careless are the parents nowadays.
“Gabriel-Gabriel Anderson, “ She whispered between sips. “My father never checked on me, you know.” Her voice trailed a lot softer this time.
I hummed in response, not bothering to intrude in someone’s personal life when I already have enough trouble in mine.
*****
Soon after, a guy came barging into the club and straight towards my end. He frowned at me and then at Eva. She was devouring one shot after the other, not bothering about the intruder. I raised my eyebrows at his abrupt death glare towards me as if he will swallow me whole.
“What the heck, Eva Anderson. You are so drunk!” He yelled, anger popping his veins on his neck.
“Ummmmm, go away!” She slapped his hands away, but he did not flinch.
“Excuse me, are you in any way related to Eva?” I peaked in the middle of their banterings.
“What the fuck is your problem? Stay away from my sister, you prick!.” He said hitting me straight up my jaw.
I didn’t recoil, instead, I rose from my couch, towering over him for about four to five inches. Grabbing his collar hard, I drew him closer to me, “You don’t want to mess with me, young man. This was your first and the last time hitting me. Next time, they will find you half-dead in a garbage tin. So you better scurry off taking your sister with you.” I flung him to the nearby desk. He collapsed face first, and I heard a series of claps. When I raised my head, Eva was laughing from ear to ear and clapping like a child in a carnival. I chuckled at her childish behaviour, somewhat cheering my mind away from worrying about a certain someone.
“You bastard, you don’t know who you’ve messed with! I will make sure you suffer because of it!” Roared the young man rising slowly from his fallen position.
I waved my hands, dismissing the rich kid, but soon heard Julie from behind, “What the fuck has happened here?”
“Oooohhh Julie! You missed the fight today!” Squealed the oh-so drunken girl behind me. I rolled my tired eyes and started walking past the noise to my small apartment.
*********
A string of gibberish tune poked my senses, that was floating in cloud nine in my sleep. My sanity couldn’t cope with the disturbing noise, so I slapped at what I imagined the source. After some time, the same irritating noise broke my unconscious sense.
Barely moving my iris inside my eyelids, I opened my eyes, covering it from the glaring sunlight ready to roast me.
“What the fuck!” Words left my mouth still dry because of lack of moisture. I blinked once, twice and then thrice adjusting my vision with the lights irritating my nerves.
“Hello! Who is this?” I barked at the person on the other side of the call.
“Jesus Zearo! My ears are bleeding. Damn! You also are not a morning person, are you?” Spoke the oh-so sarcastic voice from the other side.
“I’m sorry Emma, I’m kinda cranky in the morning,” I mumbled massaging my throbbing forehead.
“Okies, beware of dogs in the morning! Noted!. Sorry though to disturb you at this time of the day. Anyway, as promised, I’m informing you that Liara is awake and cops need your statements regarding yesterday. Can you come to the hospital at any moment?” Emma inquired. My body grew rigid when I heard her name and now that I’ve to visit again, ugh my heartbeat. I thought, clasping my chest.
“You there?” She inquired.
“I will be there in an hour.” As soon as words escaped my mouth, I studied my appearance and cringed. I’ve to trim and bathe now. Ugh, Zearo stinky you.
******
I am already half an hour late! Great! traffic almost drove me a mad man today.
“Oh, Jesus, Sorry guys, Manhattan traffic sucks.” I rushed my words along with my body entering inside the hospital room.
Shuffling my wet hair, I glanced at the people sitting inside the room. My eyes immediately found a pale yet beautiful figure resting on the hospital bed, looking at me as if she has seen a ghost. I smirked at her, my heart already hammering inside the ribcage making me all hot and bothered.
From a corner, I watched Emma and a lady walking towards me. “Thank you so much, child. You saved my Liara. I am so grateful to you.” Her motherly love was so clear in her eyes. I felt a pang of jealousy and hurt, a blended, bitter feeling that I never imagined I would feel one day.
“Oh, that? She already took care of that asshat even before we made up there, beautiful! Your daughter is a tough cookie, I must say.” I said bending a little and kissed her on her cheeks.
“Zearo,” I added, introducing myself to her.
“Diya, but Liara calls me Dima. You can also call me Dima,” she stated and hugged me that took me off guard.
“Fine by me,” I responded and hugged her back after a breathing moment.
We parted ways when someone cleared their throat. I saw a cop sitting beside Liara, looking at me as if he saw a ghost.
“Ugh, not again!” I muttered under my breath. I never expected we’d meet again. My day couldn’t be any better. I sneered at my luck.
“Cop Sire, can we please talk outside?” I urged as gently as I could. I noticed that he jumped hearing me addressing him. From a corner of my eyes, I found Liara looking at the cop and then me. Her eyebrows lifted and interest peaked when her ocean blue eyes locked onto mine. “Fucking hell, “ I cursed under my breath.
“Son, you alright?” Asked a very concerned Dima looking at my face searching for any clue about what exactly is going on inside my brain. I shook my head, signalling that I’m all good. The cop stood suddenly and walked straight out of the room. I fake saluted the people inside the room and made my way towards the waiting room.
