AN UNEXPECTED COFFEE DATE
CHAPTER 2
SAMEER
I had to come to Mumbai to see a girl whom my Nanu wanted me to marry. I had no idea why I'm doing all this. I love Naina but I don't know where she's gone. I met her at my college when she had come for a debate competition. I was not interested in the competition but Pandit had dragged me there for some work. I had first seen & heard her in that auditorium. She looked so beautiful & innocent too. I wanted to talk to her alone. I made Pandit leave the auditorium when we were done with our work. I stayed back so that I could get hold of her. She had won the debate competition. I felt proud of her. I thought I had some connection with her. When the competition got over, she was with her college group. Everyone was congratulating her for her win. When people started dispersing, I went towards her. She was standing at the entrance of the auditorium, waiting for someone.
"Congratulations Naina.", I congratulated her softly. She was looking at me trying to figure out who I am. Then I just introduced myself, "Hi. Naina, I'm Sameer Maheshwari. G.S. of this college. I heard your debate. You're very talented. You speak so well." Finally I saw her smiling, when she softly said, "Thanks Sameer. I'm Naina Agarwal from Patel College. Maine toh bohot saare debate competitions jeete hai. So I'm always good at this."
I couldn't take my eyes of her. My heart skipped a beat when I saw her smiling her most genuine smile. I wanted to continue to speak to her but some friend of her came calling. She bid me goodbye & left the college. I stood there watching her disappear from my vicinity. I was still standing there, when I heard Pandit calling me. We both left the college & went home. She was on my mind all the time.
I wanted to meet her again. It was so stupid of me that I didn't even take her mobile number. Then I mumbled to myself, "Haan haan. Jaise woh tujhe uska number de deti turant. Kuch karna padega. Usse dhoondhna padega. Main usse jaane nahi de sakta. Aaj tak kisi ladki ko dekhke mujhe aisa feel nahi hua. She is special. Meri Naina. Kya karu main. Kaise dhoondu usse. Soch Sameer kuch soch. Arey haan, woh Patel college mein padhti hai na. Wahan jaata hu kal. College mein dhoondh hi lunga." I patted my own shoulder & started to decide what to wear for the next day.
I got up early the next morning. Nanu was surprised to see me on the dining table before him for breakfast. Nanu looked at me weirdly & spoke, "Arey Ramdhari, dekh toh aaj suraj kahan se nikla hai. Aaj Sameer mujhse pehle taiyar ho gaya aur nashte ke liye bhi aa gaya." I chuckled at his antics, "Kya Nanu aap bhi. Mujhe aaj jaldi college jaana hai, isliye jaldi ready ho gaya. Chaliye nashta kar lete hai, mujhe late ho raha hai." Nanu was surprised but didn't speak further & sat down to have breakfast. We both left together. I left on my bike towards Patel College & Nanu went to his factory in his car.
I reached Patel college in fifteen minutes. I parked my bike in front of the entrance of the college & stood there waiting for my Naina. Half an hour passed but I couldn't see Naina anywhere. "Naina aayegi na aaj. Woh konse year mein hai, woh bhi nahi poocha maine. Kitna dumb hu na main. Bas usse ghoor raha tha tabhi. Yeh sab pooch leta toh main pata laga leta ki kitne baje aati hai woh college."
I was mumbling to myself, when someone tapped on my shoulder. I turned in frustration. But then I smiled widely watching my Naina standing in front of me. She was grinning while she spoke, "Arey Sameer tum yahan kya kar rahe ho. Kisi se milne aaye ho kya. Ya fir college change kar liya hai tumne." I didn't speak for a while. I was just adoring her, listening to her melodious voice. I was thinking, "Kitni pyaari lag rahi hai aaj meri Naina is Pink dress mein. Mann kar raha hai gale lagalu aur bolu ki maine isse kitna miss kiya." My trance broke when she shouted my name loudly, "Sameer... Sameer... kahan kho gaye ho tum. Main kab se awaaz de rahi hu tumhe."
I smiled widely & spoke, "Arey main na yahan se guzar raha tha. Fir dekha yeh toh Patel college hai aur mujhe tumhari yaad aa gayi toh ruk gaya. Socha ab aaya hu yahan tak toh tumse mil kar hi jaata hun." She smiled listening my response & said, "Chalo acha hua tum ruk gaye. Par mere classes thodi der me shuru honge, toh mujhe jaana hoga."
Before she could go away, I asked, "Naina will you be my friend?" She looked stunned for a while but nodded & offered me her hand. I couldn't believe my stars were in my favour. We did a typical handshake saying together, "FRIENDS FOREVER". I didn't feel like leaving her hand but I had to & before she could go, I said a little hesitantly, "Naina ab toh hum friends hai na. Toh agar main tumse tumhara mobile number mangu toh tumhe bura nahi lagega na." I could see the confusion in her eyes whether to trust me or not. So I continued, "Its ok Naina. Main samaj sakta hun ki hum abhi abhi friends bane hai. Toh kaise tum mujhpar trust kar sakti ho."
She interrupted me saying, "Sameer, yeh lo mera mobile isme tumhara number save kardo. Main tumhe baad me call karungi shaam ko. Abhi mujhe late ho raha hai. Jaldi save karo. Mujhe jaana hai." I wanted to hug her then & there. But I couldn't. So I took her mobile, saved my number & gave it back to her. She waved me goodbye & left for her classes. I was so happy that as soon as she left, I started doing a happy dance there in the middle of the road. People were looking at me strangely as if I've gone mad. But it was true, isn't it? I had really gone mad in happiness.
When I saw my mobile, there were few missed calls from Pandit & some other friends. I instantly called Pandit & told him that I would be late for the college as I've some important work. He informed me that all the classes had been cancelled for that day, so I could go home & he will meet me tomorrow. Giving a last glance towards the Patel College, I left towards home.
I was restless the whole day, waiting for Naina's call. It was already five in the evening. "Naina ne shaam ko call karungi yahi kaha tha na. Maine thik se toh suna na jo usne bola tha. Yeh Naina kab call karegi. Main bhi paagal hu. Uske phone mein number toh save kar diya, par apne number par ek miss call dene ka yaad kyun nahi raha mujhe. Fir tere paas uska number aa jaata. How stupid of me."
I was talking to myself when Nanu entered my room. "Kya hua Sameer, tabiyat toh thik haina tumhari. Kya badbadaye jaa raha hai. Kabse dekh raha hun, bata kya baat hai. Kuch pareshani hai kya. Koi ladki ka problem toh nahi na.", teased Nanu. "Aisa kuch nahi hai Nanu.", I stuttered. "Tu ab apne Nanu se chupayega?", questioned Nanu. "Aisi koi baat nahi hai Nanu.", I said lowering my eyes. I never lied to Nanu in my entire life. So it was difficult to face him now, when I can't tell him the truth. He said nothing. Just patted my back & left saying, "Aaram kar le thoda, uska phone aa jayega." I realised what he said & turned to find that he wasn't there in my room anymore. I felt guilty of lying to him. But there was nothing to let him know yet.
My each & every second seemed like years. I checked my mobile to see whether I missed any call or was my phone on silent mode or to check if the network was fine. But she hadn't called yet. Finally my mobile rang, I immediately uttered a sweet hello which then turned a little loud, when I heard it was a telemarketing call for some insurance. I shouted loudly, "Nahi chahiye mujhe abhi koi insurance Aunty. Aap please phone rakhiye, ek important call aanewala hai." The lady instantly disconnected the call. To my dismay, I got another call from Pandit asking me to join him for a movie which I declined politely saying that I wasn't feeling well.
It was now ten at night. But she hadn't called yet. I thought that she had most probably forgotten about me. I switched off my bedroom lights & went to bed. But I couldn't sleep. My mind was wandering to the reasons about why she hadn't called me yet. "Woh shayad busy hogi isliye call karna bhul gayi hogi. Ya fir usse tujhse baat hi na karni ho. Nahi nahi, aisa hota toh woh mujhse dosti hi nahi karti. Toh kya hua hai Naina, tumne ab tak call kyun nahi kiya."
God answered my questioning as my mobile rang. It was from an unknown number. I picked up hoping it to be my Naina. I waited for a second & spoke softly, "Hello." "Hello, Sameer. Main Naina bol rahi hun.", came a soft reply. I couldn't believe that finally my Naina had called me. So I replied hurriedly, "Naina, kahan thi tum. Kab se intezaar kar raha tha tumhare call ka. Tum thik ho naa. Tumne itna late kyun call kiya. Mujhe laga ki tum mujhe bhool hi gayi."
I could hear her chuckle at the other end. "Arey arey, mujhe bhi toh bolne do. Main tumhe kaise bhool sakti hu Sameer. Aaj pura din main busy thi project karne mein, isliye time nahi mila call karne ka. Fir socha raat ko call karungi toh hum aaram se baat kar sakenge. Maine just abhi project khatam kiya aur fir tumhe call kiya. Waise tum mere call ka itna besabri se intezaar kyun kar rahe the Sameer. Bolo na?", she asked.
"Woh bas aise hi. Kyun ek friend dusre friend ke call ka intezaar nahi kar sakta kya?", I stuttered a little. I heard her laughing, "Tum bhi na Sameer, ekdum buddhu ho. Main toh aise hi mazak kar rahi thi. Waise tumhe batana chahti hun ki yeh friend bhi apne iss friend se baat karne ke liye apna project jaldi khatam kar liya.", she said shyly.
Ohhhhh God... did I hear that properly. She was also waiting to talk to me. She finished her project quickly so that she could talk to me. I literally had a mini heart attack. I could take no more so I asked her boldly, "Naina kya hum kal mil sakte hai, agar tum chaaho toh mana kar sakti ho. Koi zabardasti nahi hai."
She didn't speak for a while but then I heard her saying, "Sameer kal mere classes hai, toh milna mushkil hoga. Par agar tum chaaho toh hum iss Saturday mil sakte hai, Law garden mein." My happiness knew no bounds. I had started dancing on my bed. She's ready to meet me. Somehow I controlled myself & spoke, "Ok Naina, hum Saturday ko milenge. Par kya main tumhe kal call kar sakta hun." I waited for her reply eagerly. "Haan Sameer. Kal yahi time pe baat karenge. Ab so jao. Bohot der ho gayi hai. Kal hume college bhi jana hai na." I was a little disappointed that the call was so short, but I was happy that we were going to talk tomorrow too. So I said smilingly, "Thik hai. Tum bhi thak gayi hogi. Kal baat karenge. Good night Naina. Sweet dreams." I muttered a soft Miss you, hoping she won't hear me. "Good night Sameer.", she wished me sweetly before disconnecting the call. Now I was eagerly waiting for the next day... Naaahhh... waiting for the next night.
