AN UNEXPECTED COFFEE DATE
CHAPTER 1
NAINA
When I got up in the morning today. I was so relieved as I was having an off after such a hectic week. But my happiness didn't last long. I saw my mobile which had ten missed calls from my mother & seven from my father. Was I sleeping so deeply that I didn't hear my mobile ring. Then I cursed myself a little, when I saw that my stupid mobile was on silent mode. I instantly called up my mother. She picked up the call at the first ring itself. She immediately started shouting at me, "Kab se phone kar rahe hum. Kya kar rahi thi. So rahi thi na. Jab se Mumbai gayi hai job ke liye, humare liye toh time hi nahi milta tujhe. Bola tha na, roz raat ko call kar liya kar. Par nahi, madam wahan jaakar itna busy ho gayi hai, ki poora poora hafta call nahi karti. Call karo toh phone nahi uthati." She was continuously ranting in my ears. I had to keep the mobile away for a while till she finished her loud talks. Finally, I put the call on speaker, & laid back on my bed hearing her rants.
Finally giving up, I said, "Mummy, bas na ab kitna daantogi. Maine kaha tha na pehle hi ki main yeh week bohot busy rahungi. Ghar aane mein bhi late ho jaata tha. Fir aap logon ko jaldi sone ki aadat hai, toh main disturb nahi karna chahti thi itni raat ko. Fir subah bhi jaldi jana hota tha office. Ab shant ho jao aur batao kya important baat hai itni ki aapne aur papa ne itne calls kiye hai subah se."
My mother spoke a little dejectedly, "Pata hai tu kitna busy hoti hai. Ab fresh ho jaa aur baad me video call karna. Hume bohot important baat karni hai tujhse." I knew it was very much important or else she won't have asked me to make a video call. So, we bid our goodbyes & I hurried to the bathroom to freshen up.
I had my breakfast & finally taking a deep breath, I made a video call to my father. My father picked up the call after a few rings. As the call connected, I saw my parents sitting together on our world famous sofa & having their tea. So I squealed a little in excitement, "Heyy... papa.. mummy... kaise ho app log. Kitna acha laga aap dono ko dekhkar itne dino baad. Kaise ho papa?" Before I could say more, my mother interrupted, "Beta hum thik hai. Par tujhe kya ho gaya hai. Itni patli kaise ho gayi hai tu. Thik se khaati nahi kya? Pata hai mujhe. Dekha Rakeshji main kehti thi na ki yeh ladki wahan jaane ke baad apna dhyan nahi rakhegi thik se. Dekho kaisi dikh rahi hai abhi."
"Mummy please main jaisi thi waisi hi hu. Kahin patli nahi hui main. Papa aap kuch bolo na?", I said whining. Papa laughed at our antics & finally took over saying, "Rama, Naina, ab bas karo tum dono. Rama hume kuch important batana hai Naina ko. Toh ab tum chup ho jao thodi der. Mujhe baat karne do Naina se."
That instantly got my attention. By the looks of my parents, I was sure something major was going to happen in my life. My heart was giving me a bad feeling about this. Still I maintained my calm & asked, "Kya important baat hai papa. Main sunn rahi hun." I was having a weird feeling about what was going to happen next until my father spoke, "Naina beta, humne aaj tak tumhari saari baatein maani hai, tumhari saari zidd poori ki hai. Tumhe freedom chahiye tha job karne ke liye Mumbai mein, woh bhi humne accept kiya. Ab main tumse jo bhi poochunga uska jawab soch samaj kar dena, aur haan jawab ekdum saccha hona chahiye. Mujhe pata hai, tum humse jhooth nahi bolti, fir bhi sach bolna poore dil se. Thik hai Naina."
I nodded saying, "Haan papa. Poochiye kya poochna hai apko. Main sach hi bolungi." Papa went ahead, "Naina beta, tumhare liye rishta aaya hai. Shaadi ke liye. Ladka bohot accha hai. Acche parivar se hai. Abhi Mumbai mein hi kuch kaam se aaya hai. Tum chaaho toh usse wahin mil lo. Par main yeh poochna chaahta hun ki kahin tumhari zindagi mein koi aur hai kya? Kisise pyaar karti ho tum? Toh abhi bata do toh hum yeh baat aage hi na badhaye."
I went speechless for a while. Seeing my reaction, mummy spoke a little loudly, "Naina kuch toh bolo. Papa kuch pooch rahe hai tumse." But papa interrupted her, "Naina tumhe abhi jawab dene ki zarurat nahi hai. Tum acche se sochke jawab dena. Hum wait kar lenge tab tak. Thik hai beta. Jyada time mat lena woh ladka sirf kal tak hi hai Mumbai mein. Toh mujhe shaam tak bata dena. Bye beta. Apna dhyaan rakhna aur shaam ko wapis call karna."
And my mobile screen went blank after that. I didn't move from my bed for an hour. I was laying there & thinking about what I heard on the call. Well, frankly speaking, I had no one special in my life in present. Some crushes here & there. But nothing serious as of now. And I didn't have time to date anyone since I came to Mumbai. I kept myself busy with work. If I got time, I would write or else just sleep in. I had very few friends here in Mumbai. Sometimes I did feel alone & missed my parents a lot. And I missed HIM too. Sometimes I really felt jealous when I used to see my friends with their boyfriends or fiancés. I wished HE was here. I thought about what papa asked me. I had no reason for denying what my parents asked for. But I did know that I had to share somethings from my past which I've never told them.
So I prepared myself for the inevitable & drifted to sleep again. I woke up when I heard my mobile ringing. I saw the caller & smiled. It was my best friend after all. I picked up the call, "Preeti, kahan hai tu. Mujhse mil sakti hai kya abhi. Bohot important baat karni hai." She didn't speak for a moment & I thought whether the call got disconnected. After a while she spoke, "Ho gaya tera. Main bolu ab." I laughed & said, "Haan toh maine kab bola chup rehne ko. Bol na ab." She made some stupid noises & spoke, "Darwaja khol, main bahar hi hu."
I got up in a haste to open the door. There she was standing all dressed up. And here I was just in my simple pajama pants & a baggy tshirt. She didn't like what she was seeing. I left the door open for her. She came inside & sat on the sofa without saying anything. I sat next to her offering her some water. She refused & was glaring at me. I didn't know what was wrong with her & why she was giving me those looks as if she would kill me. So, I asked, "Kya hua hai Preeti? Aise kyun ghur rahi hai mujhe jaise kha jayegi abhi." She was still glaring & spoke a little disappointedly, "Tu kuch bhool gayi hai shayad. Aaj hume bahar jana tha. Tu abhi tak taiyar bhi nahi hui hai. Aise lag raha hai jaise abhi so kar uthi hai tu. Kyun main kuch galat toh nahi bol rahi na."
"Ohhh shit... Sorry Preeti main sach mein bhool gayi. Kya yaar Preeti ek baar yaad hi dila deti call karke." I apologised sincerely. "Haan thik hai. Ab jaa ready hokar aa jaldi. Hum late ho rahe hai. Aur sunn kuch acha pehenna", she said smilingly. I huffed & got up to freshen up. I wore a red dress that came till my knees matching it with red flats. I love being simple that way. Just added a diamond studded earring to go with the dress. Kajal & a nude lipstick completed my look. I was ready to go.
Preeti whistled when I came out of my room. To be very honest, she was looking stunning in her attire with a black dress that just ended above her knees. She had worn black flats. We both hated heels that's the reason we never wore them. I grabbed the house keys, locked my apartment & left with her for a Saturday evening fun. She had brought her car. She took the driver's seat & I got in the front seat with her.
It took longer than expected to reach Cafe Coffee Day due to traffic. I told Preeti about the conversation I had with my parents in the morning. She listened silently to whatever I said. I also informed her about what I was going to tell my parents tonight. She was happy with my decision, but still asked me to think over it once again.
We reached the Cafe where Pandit was supposed to meet us. He's Preeti's fiancé. They got engaged last month. They look happy together. We saw him sitting at the corner table with someone else. He waved at us & we went towards him. As I got closer to the table, I noticed the other person sitting with him seemed familiar. Too much familiar.
I blinked twice when I came face to face with HIM. Am I imagining HIM or is HE really here? My heart was beating so loudly that I feared if HE could hear it too. I closed my eyes for a second & opened again to see HIM there looking at me intently. I didn't know how to react. Preeti broke my trance by patting me on my shoulder. I looked at Preeti, who was now hugging Pandit. They looked really great together. The perfect couple.
Pandit introduced me to the other familiar person, "Naina, inse milo yeh hai Mr. Sameer Maheshwari. Mera best friend. Kal hi aaya hai Ahmedabad se. Yahan important meeting ke liye aaya hai. Aur Sameer yeh hai Ms. Naina Agarwal. Preeti ki best friend aur meri honewali saaliji. Yeh bhi Ahmedabad se hi hai. Hum sab same company mein job karte hai yahan 2 saal se."
Preeti nudged Pandit & said lovingly, "Mujhe bhuk lagi hai. Kuch order kar le fir baatein kar lenge." Pandit teased her, "Bhukkad ho gayi ho tum meri tarah pata hai tumhe." She punched him saying, "Sangat ka asar hai." We all laughed at that, relieving the small tension that had surrounded us.
Sameer took the conversation ahead with ease, "Preeti, tumhe pata hai, college mein Pandit ko samose bohot pasand the. Par jabse main Mumbai aaya hun, main dekh raha hun, janab ne samose ka naam tak nahi liya. Kya baat hai Pandit, Mumbai aake samose ko bhul gaye kya." Pandit blushed a little & said lovingly looking into Preeti's eyes, "Jab se Preeti aayi hai na zindagi mein, main toh samosa kya sab kuch bhul gaya hun. Ab sirf Preeti hi Preeti dikhayi deti hai sab jagah." Preeti was blushing continuously after his declaration.
Sameer was still looking at me intensely. I was getting nervous under his stare. Luckily Pandit called the waiter which broke Sameer's stare. We ordered coffees & some snacks for us as it was just six in the evening. I hadn't uttered a word till now. I was just smiling at whatever Preeti & Pandit were talking. I didn't have to look at Sameer as I could feel his gaze.
Sometime later our orders arrived. I was sipping my coffee when Pandit spoke, "Sameer Mumbai bohot important kaam se aaya hai, pata hai Preeti iska important kaam kya hai. Yeh yahan ladki dekhne aaya hai." I choked on my coffee, surprising the others. But Sameer didn't react as if he was expecting this, as if he knew that I was going to choke. I looked at him finally. Our eyes met for the first time. He was not even blinking or averting his eyes. I was melting under his gaze.
"Kaisi ho Naina?" he finally asked me. Pandit & Preeti exchanged a glance. I could see everyone was having questions in their eyes. But no one muttered a word. All the three were looking at me, waiting for me to say something. And I looked at Sameer & replied, "Sameer, main thik hun. Tum kaise ho?" Sameer was directly looking at me now as if ready for the confrontation. "Main toh waisa hi hun jaisa tum mujhe chod kar gayi thi.", Sameer replied very slowly.
Pandit couldn't hold it back & asked us, "Tum dono ek dusre ko pehle se jaante ho? Toh bola kyun nahi pehle. Kab se chup baithe ho tum dono. Sameer kya baat hai, kuch toh hai jo tum dono humse chupa rahe ho. Bolo kya baat hai Naina, Sameer, bolo."
