May's POV
Two years earlier
"May, Catch!" I heard Dawn shout in warning as a pale pink frisbee was thrown smoothly in my direction without heading towards the sea.
It spun in the wind gracefully as it landed in my hand which I caught with my two fingers making everyone else pout. Sand flew everywhere as I ran forward and grinned at them all mockingly before throwing the frisbee towards a certain green head.
Drew caught it expertly and flung it towards Ash who missed completely and fell face first into the sand. The frisbee continued accelerating in the wind towards the ocean waves until it plopped in the water and floated on top of the waves.
"Great job Ash. Now look what you did." Misty scolded him while smacking the back of his head.
He pouted and looked towards the ocean where we gathered around to where the frisbee flew.
"I'll get it." I sighed before diving into the water and swimming towards the frisbee.
"Wait May!" Misty shouted before stopping as the others held her back from diving in with me.
I fought against the waves to get back to shore and about a few minutes later, I made it safely back on the sand.
"That was a workout." I gasped breathlessly.
Everyone else chuckled at me as they saw my state. I was covered in seaweed and my legs were layered in sand. My hair was all tangled and began to look kind of like seaweed altogether.
Paul just kind of stood there laughing slightly while Gary was rolling in the sand as though I was the most hilarious thing he'd ever seen. Leaf was just laughing on the ground with him. Dawn and Misty were holding onto each other trying to catch their breaths while Ash looked at me, horrified as though I was a monster while Pikachu was on his shoulder staring at me in confusion. Drew just glanced at me in amusement while bursting out laughing at the same time.
"Very funny." I rolled my eyes as they ran away from me grinning when I threw seashells at them.
I managed to aim the frisbee at Gary's head and I hit him causing him to fall over in shock.
"How unfortunate for you." I smirked at him as I ran past and threw the frisbee at Leaf who was nearby and laughing at Gary.
We ended up chasing each other around with the frisbee and tackling each other into the sand. Occasionally we'd drop one another into the water and we'd have water fights.
We stayed at the beach for another few hours before everyone set off. The seven of them drove off in a van which could carry them while I waited for Brock to pick me up. I looked at my phone a smiled.
There was a picture of the eight of us from today. Gary was holding the frisbee and grinning at the camera while Ash was trying to steal it from him with Pikachu. Misty held her mallet and had it over Ash's head while Dawn was hugging Paul who was bright red and holding ice cream.
Leaf held up the peace sign with her arm around me and Drew was smirking at the camera and holding a bunch of seaweed above my hair. I was grinning like this was the best moment of my life even though there was seaweed above my head.
By the time I had reached my home, I was worn out. Max was already in bed, reading and I had just finished taking a warm shower. Brock was in the kitchen making himself a night snack and I was heading to my room.
Everything was perfect for me now. I had my little brother by my side and Brock who acted as our father figure. There were my seven best friends who never left my side and were always supportive to me. They were like my family. I feel so complete after all this time.
Four years ago, I was a mess. I was only ten when the earthquake crushed my house, taking my parents with it. That seemed like a lifetime ago. During those grieving times, we were sent to be taken care of by a woman who was not who she seemed.
She was an alcoholic and a drug addict. Poor Max was only seven years old and he had to endure the awful treatment our so called guardian gave us. I still had the scars on my back from the abuse she inflicted to myself and my brother.
As for right now, we were being taken care of by Brock who decided to take full responsibility over us.
"May! You have a call." Max called out from his room, interrupting my thoughts.
"Coming!" I yelled back and went to his room where I left my phone. There was Max sitting across-legged on his bed with my phone in front of him.
"Unknown caller." He informed me before handing over my phone.
I nodded before picking it up and leaving the room immediately. I pressed the phone against my ear as I listened intently.
"Hello, is this May Maple?" A feminine voice asked me with worry lacing her tone.
"Yes it is." I clarified becoming anxious.
"We were informed by certain parents that we should talk to you about this situation." She told me sounding formal.
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
There was a pause. Then she spoke again.
"Do you know the girls Leaf Green, Dawn Berlitz, Misty Waterflower and four other boys named Drew Hayden, Gary Oak, Paul Shinji and Ash Ketchum?" She asked me specifying the names.
"Yes I do." I answered suddenly becoming suspicious. "Wait, who is this?"
"The local hospital, the Petalburg hospital more specifically."
I gasped pulling the phone away from my ear briefly before bringing it back and speaking again.
"Are they in hospital?" I asked in panic.
"I'm afraid so." She paused before continuing. "I suggest you come immediately."
"I'll be there right away." I spoke in a hurry before hanging up.
"Max, get in the car. We have somewhere to go." I announced while dragging Max out the door.
Brock stopped what he was doing and came over to us. Sensing our urgency, he ushered us into the car with a worried look in his expression. He held a sandwich in his hands and stuffed it in his mouth before entering the car.
"Where to, May?" He asked as he buckled up his seatbelt with both Max and I copying him.
"The hospital." I said and I glanced at Max and he frowned.
We drove to the hospital quite quickly since the road was nearly empty due to the time of the night.
"So what's wrong?" Brock asked as soon as we got out of the car.
"My friends. They're in hospital." I explained with a frown on my own face.
"For what reason?" Max asked anxiously.
"That's what we're going to find out." I said while I tried to steady my hands which were shaking uncontrollably.
"Don't worry May. We'll be by your side." Max said reassuringly while grabbing my hands.
We approached the woman at the counter who was in the middle of a phone call. She had a worried expression on her face and she was frowning. We waited a few anxious moments until she finally put down the phone and turned to us. She took a shaky breath then spoke.
"How may I help you three?" She asked us with a polite smile but her eyes were filled with sorrow.
I explained who we were here to see and she nodded but I could see that what I had said affected her as well.
"Right this way." She told us while motioning to the elevator.
We followed her in the lift and soon arrived on the second floor. Max was constantly fidgeting with his fingers and I was tapping my foot nervously. Brock was standing in silence but I could tell that he was trying to contain his worry.
"So you're May Maple, am I correct?" The woman asked me.
"That would be me. Do you happen to know my friends?" I asked her hopefully.
"Of course. I've know those seven kids for years. Especially my Leaf. You see, I'm Leaf's mother and I also work as the receptionist here in the Petalburg hotel." She explained to me as I looked at her with wide eyes.
"Leaf did once mention that her mother worked here after moving from Kanto." I said.
"We're here." She announced as we approached a room with adults standing around the outside of it.
"Hello. Are you May?" A woman with green hair asked me which I nodded in response. "And you must be Max then."
I looked at Max and he also nodded similar to how I did.
"This is my husband Louis Hayden and I'm Amber Hayden. We are Drew's parents." She introduced but she didn't look quite happy. Her husband just dipped his head in greeting and I offered him a small smile.
"May! I'm so glad you're here." I familiar voice said.
"Mrs Berlitz!" I exclaimed.
"It's been a while, May." A voice said from behind Johanna. "Nice to see you again."
"Reggie." I smiled at Paul's brother.
"And me too. It's so great to see you again May." Professor Oak greeted me from beside Reggie.
"I know it's a nice happy reunion, but we have to focus on the situation here." Ash's mum, Delia spoke up making everyone silent.
"What's wrong?" I asked suddenly frightened of what I was going to hear next.
"You see, our kids never made it back home from the beach this afternoon. They crashed." Leaf's mother explained.
"They what!?" I exclaimed in pure shock then started feeling uneasy. "So what's happening with them now?"
"They're in a coma. Apparently from what the doctors have told us, they are likely to get amnesia. Not too severe but they will forget somethings. They are most likely going to forget things from the past few years." Reggie explained making me feel sick.
"I met them only a few years back." I gulped making everyone gasp. "What if they forget me?"
"Oh dear. I'm so sorry May." Drew's mother said sympathetically.
About an hour passed and everyone had began to calm down. We had been restlessly waiting for news the past hour.
I sat there silently, my fists clenched in frustration. The news broke me more than it should've. My younger brother hugged me in a comforting way as he could sense my anguish.
All seven of them. They will not remember anything.
Leaf, my best friend and pretty much partner in crime. She never left my side and always helped me no matter what the situation was. She was like the sister I never had, almost equal to my brother Max. She never failed to make me laugh. I was just twelve when I met her.
Dawn was my second friend after I met her in Rustboro. After I visited her school, we immediately became friends along with everybody else. Dawn was the one who'd never back down on going shopping with me and she was my coordinator buddy, always helping assess my skills as a coordinator.
Misty was the one who always stood beside me and never failed to bite off anyone's head if they threatened me. She would always help me with my homework since my school was a bit behind her school. She was definitely the person I would talk to if I ever had any problems.
Ash was my food buddy. We always checked out all the different restaurants together and never failed to eat the whole menu due to our huge appetites. Ash was my best friend that was a boy and if I ever had any problems with the girls, I would talk to Ash.
Gary and myself would always have prank wars with each other when we had the chance and we would also prank the others together which would make them so angry. He would be the one the hangs out with myself and Leaf when we watch movies together.
Paul was a close friend of mine and he actually could start conversations with me. We were on good terms with each other to the point where he would be like an overprotective brother. That would change if he forgot me.
Then there was Drew. We constantly argued with each other but when we got along we acted like pretty good friends. I hated his attitude and on a daily basis we would always call each other names. But I wouldn't want it any other way.
But now they would all change. My best friends won't be there anymore like they used to be. They would only remember each other, excluding myself.
My phone buzzed in my pocket which I pulled out and stared at the screen with a frown on my face.
'My offer still stands May.'
—-
Just to clarify, when May becomes an agent, she's only fourteen. For the rest of the story, she'll be sixteen. Max is three years younger than her.
For the sake of this book, the rest will also be sixteen. Max is thirteen.
Not that ages really matter in this story anyways. Just to make sure.
I actually feel really sorry for May. Just imagine your friends forgetting you completely and especially ones who are extremely close to you. I can't imagine losing a best friend like that....
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the first chapter of my new book.
Thanks for reading.
