Chapter 11: Argument Interrupts Celebration
****Magnus's POV****
Magnus was humming to himself as he shrugged off his morning robe to change out into something more fitting. His husband laid sprawled out in bed, snoring softly. Alec had been awfully restless during the night for no discernible reason, so Magnus had thought it was only fair the Shadowhunter turned Archangel was allowed to sleep for a little while longer.
It is the weekend after all so he does have the day off anyways.
Unfortunately Magnus had been left unaware of the dream going on inside Alexander's head. If he had known...well, things would've been different, that much was certain.
Magnus was working on zipping up his tight skinny jeans when Alec bolted up into the waking world. His hazel eyes were turning a powerful blue as he gasped for air, his mouth shaped in a silent plea. For what, Magnus was uncertain. Behind his husband those white wings trembled as though struck by a deep set pain. There were no injuries on Alec however, so it seemed whatever was troubling him had to be of the internal variety. Hastily he rushes over to Alec's side. His jeans and button up violet shirt could be fixed up later.
"Alexander, what's wrong?"
Those blue eyes turned to him. They stare wide and unblinking, a million thoughts seemingly rushing through Alec's head in those few seconds. A heavy set frown grows on the Archangel's lips.
"Nothing." He sighs. "Just....just...well, I guess I could say it was a bad dream."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"No."
Magnus peers at his husband worriedly. Runed skin was covered in a thin layer of sweat, making Alec's messy black hair plaster to head. Worry was pulsating from both husbands now, though where Alec's concerns came from were still unknown to him. Sure there are the Acriux demons but he doesn't know the full extent of the danger they pose yet. And besides, Izzy and Simon are having their engagement party tonight. Shouldn't he be feeling happy? Unless....
A certain winged nephilim came to mind. One who had been stressing Alec out over the past couple days. Possibly he was involved in this.
"Alexander, tells me the truth, does this have to do with Daniel?"
Alec lets out a bone-weary sigh as his eyes return to their normal hazel hue. The Archangel must realize that his expressions were freaking Magnus out, so he relaxed slightly in bed. Those calloused hands were tightly fisted in the sheets however, still revealing the tension Alec was trying so hard to push down.
"I....I....yes. I think, no, I know so."
Magnus softens at that admission. The honesty in Alec's tone is unmistakable to his ears. It was that same tone that Alec would use whenever he made confessions such as "I love you" or "you're my world" or some such. Magnus found solace in that tone, just like he found peace in his husband's warm embrace that would squeeze the air out of his lungs whenever Alec hugged too tight.
"Hmm, and you're sure you don't want to talk about it?" Magnus presses again, hoping for better results this time. The haze of panic was gone from Alec now, replaced by steady befuddlement.
"Uh....I don't think I'm ready yet, to be honest. It's a lot to process." Alec lets out a sigh, those hazel eyes peering up at Magnus. "I'm sorry. I know that's not what you wanted to hear."
"Nonsense. I just want to make sure you're okay is all. I know how hard it came be to come to terms with events, whether they be from the past or present."
"You're telling me." Alec lets out an aggrieved huff. "Daniel's been hiding something from me...and now that I think I know what it is, I can't help feeling sick all over."
"Perhaps you'll feel better after speaking to him at tonight's party. Celebration and alcohol tends to make confrontation run smoother, if not with a little less inhibition in the way."
"You make a fair point." Alec gets up from the bed with stiff legs. Those white wings stretch out behind him as he lets out a yawn. "Tonight will be a perfect opportunity to talk to him."
"Yes, that's why some people call me Magnificent Magnus Bane." He does a practiced flourish that he picked up back during the early 1800s. Usually it was to woo women, though it did work on the occasional man under the right circumstances. Alec reacts in a pleasant way to the gesture, a soft smile adorning his features as he lets out a chuckle.
"Oh really. Raphael told me last month that he nicknamed you Magnificent Bane because you were being a pain in the a-"
"Language Alexander." One slender finger stops the offending word from slipping out of Alec's mouth. "I can't say I'm surprised Raphael would make such a statement, though I am surprised he shared it with you, seeing as he isn't much of a sharing type around my significant others. Especially not Etta."
Etta had been his girlfriend during the time he had taken in Raphael back when he was a new Fledgling. Like then, Raphael still wasn't much of a people person. At this point Magnus doubts that will ever change.
Alec presses a kiss to Magnus's cheek before beginning to walk out of the room. His wings sway behind him like alluring veils of shimmering light, much to tantalizing for anyone to resist.
"Well, I guess he finally realized that unlike Etta, I'm here to stay." Alec says with his sleepy voice. It's husky in the way it always is when his husband just wakes up. It's also extremely hot. I can remember several occasions during our first months of dating where I woke up turned on by that rugged voice.
"Touché Alexander Lightwood-Bane. Touché."
Magnus walks out to join his husband in the living room. The curtains had been drawn back to let in streams of sunshine that swathed the hardwood floors with warmth. His barefoot feet were grateful to be warmed up by each solitary panel as he follows Alec into the kitchen.
He found his husband pulling out bacon and eggs from the fridge as he arrived. Alec had already been joined by Chairman Meow moments before. Their little fur baby was winding his way around Alec's long legs, pausing every so often to take a swipe at those large wings with their soft feathers.
Being such a small kitty cat, the only feathers Chairman was able to successfully reach were the primaries located on the very end of each wing. These were the kind that naturally brushed against the floor. Due to their length they were also the least likely to fall out, even if a kitten were to gnaw on them for several days like the Chairman definitely had.
"So what do you want for breakfast? I have bacon and eggs here, but if you want something else I'll have to swing by the store."
Magnus shakes his head. "You do realize I could just summon us up something to eat right?"
Alec nods. The Archangel had set the food down on the counter and was now busy washing his hands under the sink. Little soap bubbles dot the air with their prismatic gleam. Thankfully Chairman is much too enraptured by Alec's wings, otherwise the small kitty would try to smash them. As a result he would get a painful amount of burning soap in his little eyes, and Magnus was not in the mood for rinsing soap out of a wailing kitten's eyes. He'd probably claw me a lot in the process. And that just won't do.
"Of course I know that. I could do the same." Alec lets some sparks of white energy dance on his fingertips. The light moves with the same fluid grace as Magnus's own magic, yet he can tell how much more it relates to Alec in the way it moves in fixated patterns like that of a well-oiled machine. "But stealing is wrong as I've told you several times before."
He had told Magnus several times before, that much was true. It annoyed the warlock plenty, especially whenever he wanted to summon food from his favorite restaurants. Nowadays he almost always paid for everything he summoned thanks to Alec. Key word here being almost.
And Alec is none the wiser about it, and I plan to keep it that way for as long as possible. Seeing as they now have eternity to spend together (something that was so exhilarating to think about) Magnus figures that Alec will likely find out in the next couple hundred years. So it was best to enjoy free food while he still could. Alec would put an end to it one day...or eventually come to terms with making exceptions on Magnus's behalf (very unlikely but still possible under the right circumstances).
"But Alexander, I'll pay them this time." He says with a dramatic tone that makes Alec roll his eyes.
"I suppose you're going to keep pressing me until I say yes. And, seeing as we have a party to go to this evening I guess I'll let you do it just this once." Alec turns to put away the bacon and eggs, only to see that they're already put away thanks to a flick of Magnus's hand.
"I'm so glad we're on the same page." One quick snap of his fingers and a delicious spread of chocolate covered strawberries, scones, tea, and biscuits coated in expensive jam sit on the kitchen table ready to be devoured. "So let's get eating."
The two share a wonderful breakfast, chatting about plans for the party later that night. Meanwhile Chairman curls up under the table, happily eating all the scraps of food his Daddies give him.
****Time Skip/ Clary's POV****
The party was in full swing by the time she and Jace arrived at the Lightwood Manor that evening. Not wanting to spoil Izzy and Simon's night, they had handled the surprise Wraith demon attack in Queens that had damaged the sewage systems there. Luckily they didn't have to do a follow up investigation, seeing as Underhill and his team would deal with cleanup. And so Clace had quickly went back to the Institute to shower and change before leaving for the party.
Izzy greets Clary with a happy wave from across the ballroom, already too occupied to go over for a greeting hug currently. Seeing as the manor house had been built several hundred years ago (something Daniel could confirm from literally building it all those years past), the light fixtures overhead were antique chandeliers, the kind that were bedazzled with strewn diamonds and pieces of sea glass. The carpets were a faded green with an oriental pattern suggesting a curious Middle Eastern theme. Drapes covering the full-length windows and porch doors consisted of a rich velvet material that would've blocked out any sunlight provided there was still any in the sky.
The leather couches were all taken up with party guests already, aside from the winged nephilim who were still surprisingly absent for no apparent reason. Magnus and Alec were busy talking to Aline an Helen over by the windows. Max and Madzie were chasing each other around while Robert, Jia and Catarina watched them with amused smiles. Maia, Raphael and Bat were taking shots of alcohol from the set up bar area that a young bartender from the Hunter's Moon was hard at work at. A grand buffet table had been set up to with entrees from Taki's courtesy of Maia (who had thoroughly insisted on it). The couple of the hour was talking to Maryse and Luke who were drinking champagne in front of the set up projector screen.
Someone (likely Simon) had rigged it to project images from many different photo albums. As it would turn out, the Sizzy couple was very fond of scrapbooking. This paid off in situations like now where they had well over a thousand photos to cycle through on an endless loop. The current photo was that of Simon and Izzy's adventure to the zoo. It had been the first time Isabelle had ever gone and Simon had managed to get a perfect shot of Izzy chatting with one of the adorable little otters swimming in the enclosure. The look of glee on her face was not one that could be faked. It lit up the corners of her mouth with a brilliant smile, her brown eyes sparkling.
"Looks like everyone has been having fun without us." Clary comments. Her hand is entwined with her boyfriend's own.
Jace smirks. "Nah, they're just patiently waiting for us to bring the real party."
"Haha maybe." She concedes. "Who should we go talk to first?" Everyone already seemed pretty occupied in discussion already. Perhaps
The question is answered before Jace can respond as Max staggers to a halt in front of them, his apparent run around session with Madzie forgotten for now. He had grown plenty over the last two years. His face had become more hardened from demon hunting, runes and scars covering his arms like spidery veins. The youngest Lightwood had yet to get a Parabatai, but at this point it didn't seem like he cared for one anyways. The youngest Lightwood was dressed in his formal attire of a form fitting blue blazer and slacks. His leather shoes were a neat black that went along with his tie and belt.
"Clary! Jace! Long time no see!" Max's voice had a hoarseness to it that came from puberty. Jace had made the mistake of teasing him about it a couple months back. Clary hopes he doesn't make the same mistake again.
"Hey Max." Clary responds in kind.
"Max, so good to see you." Jace tugs his adoptive little brother into a hug that Max fails to resist.
"Jace!" He whines. "I'm not a little kid anymore."
"I know." Jace ruffles Max's hair before letting him go. "But you'll always be my little brother."
"Fine fineeee. What took you guys so long to get here?"
"Wraith demon attack in Queens. Someone had to handle it so Izzy didn't have to worry, so we did." Jace fiddles with the hems of his blazer as he says this, giving himself a once over to make sure everything was in order.
"Oh cool. I got to fight a horde of Drevaks last weak. I got a wicked scar on my leg from one of them. I'll have to show it to you later." Max says with glee.
"Hmm, then I guess it's only fair I show you the scar I got from fighting an Acriux demon." Clary chips in. At those words Max seems highly impressed, those youthful hazel eyes wide.
"Would you!? That would be amazing!"
"Of course! How about you go play with Madzie again for now though. It looks like she misses you." Clary gestures to the shy little warlock girl, who was beckoning Max from across the room.
"Alright. See you guys later then." Max murmurs before scampering off.
"Aww, he was more impressed with you then he was with me." Jace complains.
"Oh hush now. You're his brother, you don't need to worry about competition for his attention from me." Clary tells him.
"Ah fair enough." The two share a smile before going off to mingle with the crowd, and also grab a bite to eat. It had been several hours since either of them had eaten some food, so they were reasonably starved.
***Magnus's POV***
Magnus had been the first to sense them thanks to the wards he has on Lightwood manor for a little extra security.
Daniel, Pippa and Harry burst through the doors with a loud bang that got everyone's attention, or maybe he should say everyone that was still there. Party activities had begun to wind down ever since it hit 11pm. It was now a little past midnight. Jace, Clary, Simon, Izzy and Alec were the only ones still there as the other party guests made their leave.
The eldest was in the lead of the group. His blue eyes were blazing with anger as his nighttime wings twitched in agitation. Those feathers were glowing with a dangerous light, splashes of red hot anger shifting through them. The other two siblings were following behind him with mixed expressions. Harry bore a worried frown, while Pippa seemed to almost shake with pent up rage.
"Daniel you need to listen to us!" Pippa all but yells.
"No. I don't want to hear anything else you have to say." Daniel announces coldly. "We're at the party now, so please don't make a scene." The eldest tries to walk away, only for Harry to grab at his wrist to tug him back. Magnus and the other party goers watch in silence as Daniel whirls around ready to shout, only to sigh when he realizes that it's Harry that grabbed him and not Pippa.
"Dan Dan, I know you're hurting but this has to be addressed. It'll be six years soon since..." Harry trails off, apparently unwilling to say more. Magnus wonders what was about to tumble out of his mouth.
It has to have been important, whatever it was.
He is old enough to realize what the sad looks on the winged nephilims' faces mean. And he doesn't like it one bit. Magnus glances over at his husband to see his reaction to the heated argument. Alec's jaw is clenched tight as he remains rooted to his spot next to Magnus.
"Harry....don't. Please, just don't."
"Why Daniel, he's absolutely right that we need to talk about this. You went missing for almost two days and we all know why. You can't keep shutting us out about this and you know it!" Pippa exclaims angrily her hands tossed up in the air at the eldest as if to express "look at what an absolute idiot you're being".
Magnus couldn't recall having ever seen the three siblings at such odds with one another. It made him wonder even more as to the why this was going on? What exactly had spurred on such a volatile response? He once again looks at his husband to gauge his reaction. Alec remains perfectly rigid, despite Magnus and now Jace who are staring at him with worry. Magnus knows perfectly well that Alec doesn't know what is fully going on with the three winged nephilim now. Jace could be an entirely different story though. He might be wondering why Alec doesn't put a stop to all this...
"I only left because I needed some time to myself." Daniel tells them both.
"Then why didn't you tell us that? Why not call?" Harry asks tentatively. The youngest is acting the most reasonable of the trio, trying not to spur on even more anger from either Pippa or Daniel.
"Yea. Why not call?" Pippa jeers in agreement, which certainly isn't helping the situation at all. Those fiery wings seem almost lit fully with powerful essence. It weaves around each wingtip to cascade down into her primaries.
"I forgot okay! That's all there is to it. I'm-I'm sorry." Daniel sighs. He voice takes on a distant edge at he stares in Pippa's direction without really looking at her at all. Almost as though he was staring at something else entirely. "You know how much I miss Sara. I-it hurts. It hurts a lot." He mutters forlornly.
Pippa's anger finally peters out upon hearing this while Harry seems relieved that his siblings have finally stopped fighting each other. Magnus wouldn't be surprised if the two eldest had been at each other's throats long before they got to the party, judging by how angry they clearly were.
He expects more apologies and maybe even a few hugs between the three, but that train of thought is crashed when another voice decides to speak up. This voice is right beside him, one that he knows just as good as his own at this point. Alec is quiet as he speaks. The sadness in his voice is unmistakable, so much so that it reverberates throughout the whole room with its somber after-note it leaves in everyone's hearts.
"Daniel, Pippa, Harry, why didn't you tell me about Sara? Why didn't you tell me I have another daughter?"
