The villagers do the exact opposite. They hunger for excitement, making something as mere as a chicken laying her eggs seem like the beginning of a new era. Naturally, something such as an entire horse wagon disappearing was the talk of the village. The family who lost it were distressed, and their nosy neighbors had their curiosity peaked.
