Chapter 1

Serenity's POV
"I would say I'm going to miss you but, I'd be lying"
My older sister, Cassidy, said as she typed away at her phone. Out of all the people that I will miss in my home town, she's someone at the bottom of the list. She has been a complete bitch to me my whole life.
Whatever school she went to I had to follow. My parents wanted us in the same school since it provided them with a sense of security. What they didn't know was that ever since middle school I've been getting bullied by her.
I decided to take my talents and academic success to a HBCU. In my opinion that's just the way to go. Howard University has always been my first pick.
Since she's one year older than me she thinks she could control my life. She tried convincing my parents that I shouldn't go to Howard because I might get pregnant at a young age. Then she went on to say that I can't handle the stress of attending such an intense university.
She was talking all that shit while she was breastfeeding her month-old baby. She talks a lot for someone who is a two-month college dropout.
"How about you focus on being a single mother and take care of your newborn baby"
I said as I rolled my eyes. I continued packing up my clothes as she huffed in annoyance. She has been like this ever since we were little kids. I've learned to let it roll off my back.
"Baby, are you ready to go?"
My mom said as she came down the stairs. Her Louis Vuitton earring shined in the sun as she fixed the collar of her bodycon white dress. The leather snakeskin ankle boots she was wearing made a clacking sound as she walked to me.
You could say that my family has money. When your mom is a neurosurgeon and your dad is an Anesthesiologist you have a little bit more money than most families.
We weren't always rich. Before my parents started making money we lived in the living room of my grandparent's house. The cost of medical school sucked their bank accounts dry.
We ended up losing the house, the cars, and most of our family. None of them wanted to help us while we were going through that rough patch in life. The ones that we asked for help either hung up in our faces or said they'll call us back and quickly went to change their numbers.
My mom avoided having to ask her parents for help but when she finally did they welcomed us with open arms. Once my parents began making money everyone that turned their back to them started coming back.
My parents never pick up the phone for any family members unless it's my grandparents. They made sure to change their number. Almost everyone doubted their ability to make it but, once they did everyone wanted a portion of their paychecks.
My parents have high hopes for my sister and I. They didn't force us to be a doctor or a lawyer like most parents do. They allow us to explore our interests and pick a major based on our knowledge of the profession.
My sister and I are what people like to call spoiled brats. Cassidy carries that title with pride but, I don't. Wherever she goes she lets people know that her parents are Kassandra and Timothy Dixon. I on the other hand don't claim them at all, not to be rude or anything.
People have the tendency to hand things to us because of our parents. I made sure that I got into Harvard because of my good grades, over nine hundred community service hours, and my presidency in over twenty clubs since freshman year.
Cassidy on the other hand didn't work as hard as I did. She waited for a university to notice who our parents are so she could go brag to them. She practically bribed Princeton University to take her because she promised them donates in our parent's name.
When she dropped out my parents beat her ass like no tomorrow. She dropped out because she didn't know that school was that hard. She just cheated her way through high school so she couldn't have known. A month after she dropped out she found out she was pregnant.
"Yes I'm ready, let's go before traffic gets bad"
"You're not going to say goodbye to your sister Cassidy?"
My mom asked my sister. She looked up from her phone and sighed. She placed her baby in the crib and got up. I thought she was going to hug me but, she walked to the door and opened it. She gestured for me to get out.
My mom sighed and took my bags. I stuck the middle finger at her then walked through the door. I can't wait for the day I invite her to my graduation. I'll rub it in her face that I did something that she can only dream of doing.
"Come on baby, we have a long way to go from here to Washington"
My mom said as Kevin, my favorite butler, placed my bags in the trunk of the Hummer limousine. He's this adorable short old man that I spent most of my time with. Before we left I gave Kevin a hug and did our secret handshake.
"You're really going to leave me with your monster of a sister?"
"I'm sorry but, Howard awaits. I'll come back here on the holidays"
We talked for a little bit then it was time for me to go. I gave him a hug then, waved goodbye at him. I'm going to miss my home. I had everything I could ever ask for.
My indoor pool will be cold without me, the designing room that I built a few years ago will be empty for a while, and the 1,100 square feet kitchen will be missed the most.
As we were on our way I pulled out my sketchbook. I took note of the curves and humps along the road as I drew out a pleated skirt that had ruffles the same shape as the curves.
I started off making clothes for my Bratz dolls. The real bad bitches had Bratz dolls, not barbies. I'm telling you, all my dolls had matching jean skirts with pink sequin crop tops.
At the age of ten, I was making skirts for me to wear to church while the kids ate each other's snot, including Cassidy.
I was hand threading for the longest before my parents finally bought me a sewing machine for my thirteen birthday. They were waiting to see if sewing was just a hobby or a potential career choice.
Money wasn't exactly something that was lying around so, I had no choice but to wait either. Once the money started flowing in my parents signed me up for a sewing class.
In class, I was a very quick learner so I picked up the sewing techniques very fast. A year into my sewing class I started making hoodies from scratch and even dresses.
When I was in high school I turned my passion into a side hustle. I charged everyone eighty dollars for custom made items. If you wanted something with extra designs it was one hundred twenty. I even made some prom dress.
I would say I made roughly twenty thousand dollars from my freshmen to senior year. All that money is still in my savings account. I promised myself to not touch a cent of it.
"Baby, we're at the airport"
My mom said snapping me out of the focused gaze that I had on my sketchbook. On the drive to the airport, I made three puffer jacket designs, a design pair of snake high heels, and some diamond-encrusted earrings.
Once I get to my dorm I'm busting out my materials and I'm making all of them. That's the fun part of being a fashion major. You get to be creative with your designs and you get to wear your own clothes.
I don't remember the last time I actually bought clothes. If I know I can make something myself why would I buy it? The only thing I buy is watches.
Dresses, skirts, shirts, shorts, and more can be made from the comfort of my own home. There's no way I'm going to a packed mall that's full of rude people. I choose to deal with the rude people that are at my house.
When we made it to the airport my dad was waiting for us. He seems to have just come from work since he had on his navy blue scrubs. I ran up to him and attacked him in a much-needed hug.
You can for sure call me a girl dad.
"Hi, baby girl. Are you ready to unlock this part of your life?"
"Yes dad, I am"
"Since we can't fly with you to Washington we'll give you the key to your apartment right now. You didn't want to live in our three-story mansion so, we got you an apartment close to the university. And we even sign you up for a two-person unit"
I nodded my head with a smile. I want to experience university like a regular student, not as a multi-millionaire's daughter. There's no way I'm about to pull up to school in my Bentley or Rolls Royce.
So, my parents had a matte black 2020 Lexus that they gave me as a present for graduating high school being sent to Washington for me. I paid half and they paid half. My goal is to be a normal teenage girl.
My parents and I talked for about thirty minutes as we waited for my flight to board. We reminisced on my childhood and my early teenage years. It's safe to say that I didn't change that much.
I still sneak in the kitchen to eat snacks at three am, I still beat Cassidy's ass when she tries to be slick with me, and I still listen to the same eight songs on repeat every day.
"Flight 20045 to Washington is boarding in five minutes"
I sighed and looked at my parents with a somber look. I could see the tears in their eyes as their shoulders slumped. Their only daughter is heading off to university.
"I'm going to miss you helping me cook in the kitchen even if you eat half of the food. I'm going to miss threatening you when you forget to wash the dishes. I know parents aren't supposed to have favorites but, you're our favorite."
My mom said as my dad nodded his head. I pulled them both in for a hug and squeezed them tightly. I know this is affecting my dad the most.
My dad has always shown his emotions. He never tried to act tough and put on a brave face for us. Making us aware of how he felt allowed us to help him through it and move past whatever problem we were having.
I'm happy to say that my dad didn't believe in the whole boys don't cry thing. We didn't have to live with a robot.
"Well baby, you have to go. Your plane is boarding. We will miss you dearly"
"I'll make sure to come back in a few months for Christmas. I will also give you guys a call as soon as I land"
We said our I love you to each other and parted ways. I heard my mom telling me to run as she tried to hold my dad back. He was screaming "I'm not ready to let you go" as the thought of me leaving finally settled in his head.
He tried crawling his way to the plane as I speed walk to the flight attendant. I handed her my ticket then, went to my seat. I stared out of the window as more people started boarding the plane.
I hope Washington is ready for me because I'm going to make it big over there.
