Chapter 2: The Unexpected But Predictable Secret

Miku's POV:

I stepped onto the school's campus and walked through the booths and displays set up. There was some time before I had to be up on stage, so I decided to check them out.

There was so many food stalls that it made me drool. Takoyaki, ramen, oden, cotton candy, shaved ice, and much more! I was so tempted to buy some but I remembered that I had a performance to do. After fighting the temptations, I landed up next to the classrooms where the displays were. There were still some places with food here like a maid cafe but the majority were actually displays.

I dropped on by at the idol-themed classroom and was bombarded by a bunch of guys the moment I stepped in the door. A lot of them asked to take pictures with me next to their works of art and intensely accurate reports on idols. There was even a cut out of me at the exit. I just shook my head and went down the hall to the auditorium.

I saw Kazuki holding a clipboard at the entrance anxiously checking his watch until he noticed me.

"There you are!" he exclaimed. "You are quite early but that's fine. Gives us plenty of time to set up. We'll need to take you to your dressing room right now."

"Wow," I said with surprise. "You seem awfully excited to be the production manager."

"Trust me, I'm not. Now let's go. I have to show you the way," he replied grabbing my hand. I blushed a little but managed to contain it. He took me backstage to a room with my name in the room label.

"Our school's drama club will prep your outfits and makeup, then I'll be back later to check on you."

"Thank you," I smiled. He walked out of the room and the drama students went in and started.

Kazuki's POV:

"Set crew! Get it together! We need the backgrounds up right now!" I shouted. The set people scrambled around to finish the preparations for the stage and started to set it up.

"Technicians! How's the mics and speakers going?"

"They're in proper order! We still have to test the music!" responded the crew.

"Get it done!" I exclaimed. Being production manager is hard work but I can't take the job too lightly since my dad is the president of the PTA. Speaking of lights.....

"Are the spotlights working yet?" I asked a crew member.

"Yeah. Oh, you better get Miku out now. We have to show her the set up and how the mic works, you know, just in case."

"Got it." I went backstage and got to Miku's room. I could hear her singing from behind the door. It sounded a bit off but you practice makes perfect. I pulled the door open completely forgetting to knock.

"Sorry to intr-" AHHHHH!!!!!!!! MY EARS!!!!!!!!!!! The notes she's singing is hurting my ears!!!!!!!!!

I fell to my knees only to have Miku stop singing and turn around looking at me. She was all red and she looked like she was about to break down. There were moments of silence between us.

I quickly stood up and bowed.

"I'm really sorry! I did not mean to intrude on you. You need to see the set crew for the set up and mic."

"T-thanks...." she stuttered. I walked out of the room slowly closing the door and running back to the set crew.

"Hey, can I see the mic Miku will be using for a sec?"

The crew member nodded and gave me the mic. It surprised me how I didn't notice.

The mic was turquoise colored like Hatsune Miku's hair and had her name on a strip wrapped around it. But what was the most surprising was that there was a switch for..... auto-tune. I nearly fainted. I gave the mic back to the member and walked back into the hallway.

I reflected on what I just found and realized Miku can't sing, but used auto-tune in all of her performances. I thought the company gave us Miku's mic because it was her favorite and would not do a concert without. But now I knew...... it was because she had a terrible voice!

I calmed myself down and tried to get it out of my head. I went back to my duties but the thought kept coming back.

"Hey Kazuki!" shouted one of the set members. "Our MC is sick and you are the only one who looked over his lines...."

"I know what you are saying. Yeah, I'll do it," I replied sadly. The set crew hugged me and went back to their work.

Pretty soon, it was time for the concert.

Miku's POV:

I looked through the small slit in the curtains and saw a packed house. It was usually like that with all my performances.

I turned around and looked over at Kazuki who was muttering to himself for whatever reason that I didn't know of. But it reminded me about the MC. I looked around but the MC was nowhere to be seen.

I was going to ask the crew where he was until the lights dimmed and the spotlight turned on. To my surprise, Kazuki walked out onto the stage with a mic and presented himself.

"Ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for joining us today at Hatsune Miku's Sakura Concert. I'm the production manager and substitute MC, Kazuki. Now without further delay, here comes Miku singing her best-selling song on CD, World Is Mine!"

Kazuki stepped off stage and smiled at me. What did that smile mean? Was he going to reveal my secret to the entire school. No, maybe even the entire world? I gotta set things straight with him later.

Gripping my mic, I stepped onto the stage and sang.....

Kazuki's POV:

"Hey, nice singing out there!" I told Miku. She fidgeted around unsure to be happy, embarrassed, or cautious.

"I bet you haven't had fun at one of these festivals in a long time. Here, let me show you the best things about this event!" I screamed with excitement grabbing Miku's hand for the second time today. She was confused and she ought to be.

Because I'm going to confront her about her singing tonight....
