Shadow of the Weak
A/N: Due to the song's length, I would recommend putting on loop.
Dirt filled your vision, as Lucian kept his foot on your back. You wanted scream and kick, but all of your limbs ached in pain from being thrown to the hard ground. Thus all you could do was grab at the dirt, searching for something, anything to help. Though, all the ground had to offer you was a dust filled with hopelessness. Lucian, using his foot, turned you over onto your back, so that you could face him. His purple eyes seemed to laugh at you and your pathetic condition. A mocking grin tugged at the corners of his mouth, as the light in his hands illuminated his haunting expression. He lowered himself a little, which increased the pressure that he was putting on his right foot, which was rested on your midsection. Feeling as though your insides were being crushed, you glared up at him, but he could easily see the dominating fear in your (e/c) orbs.
"My pet, leaving my side again, how disrespectful," he stated, shaking his head in way that made you feel like a child being scolded.
Before you knew what was happening, you saw that he had his right index finger on the left side of your neck. Without any hesitation, he drew it down your neck and collarbone, which caused a loud scream to be emitted from your lips. He was burning your skin slowly and you could feel the burn marks on your skin forming. Tears threatened to stream down your face, as he then did the same on the other side of your neck. As you were pressed to the floor, crying out in agony, you saw the shadow figure from before sitting upon the stairs, watching the scene with glee. You wanted nothing more than to pierce the heart of that creature even if it didn't have such an organ within it.
Spotting the creature, you began to wonder why it was not killing you itself? Did it really take such joy in seeing Lucian hurting you? Did it commit such acts with the other sorcerers and sorceresses that entered or came near the sanatorium? Furthermore, why did it never actually come near you? It always seemed to stay a good amount distance away from you. Wait, could it not come near you, could it not come near a human or a part human in your case?
Though, before you could think anymore on the matter, you felt the same burning pain now applied to your wrists. Focusing back on Lucian, you saw he was now on top of you pinning you to the ground. His face mere inches from yours, you found yourself trying to sink back further into the dirt floor, but such an attempt was pointless. Amused by your behavior, he burnt your wrists more, sending another wave of pain through you. Tears began to roll down your face, as Lucian smiled in delight.
"You're so beautiful when crying, my pet. Maybe I should preserve your tears after I kill you," he whispered, his eyes resembling nothing of his former self.
The look in his eyes told you that the only way to bring Lucian back to his senses was to kill the grinning monster that sat on the stairs. Managing to conjure up enough strength in your legs, you shifted just enough, so that you could knee Lucian in the place that hurt. This caused him to let go of you, permitting you enough room to crawl out from under him. With only the monster now in mind, you darted for it. Though, your legs seemed to move incredibly slow from the aching pain in them. However, your heart raced at a quickening speed, as you knew this was the only opportunity to reach for the monster.
Seeing you coming near it, the monster started to retreat into the darkness. However, you wouldn't let it escape, not with Lucian starting to recover behind you. Thus you lunged forward and managed to grab the monster's leg. At first nothing happened, but soon a piercing scream filled the stairwell. From where you were at, you could see blood erupting from the monster's leg. You were right; the monster could only harm sorcerers or sorceresses. With the monster in pain, you gripped its other leg with your hand. Its scream intensified, making you want to cover your ears, but you had to kill it.
Pulling on its legs, you managed to bring the monster's torso to your level, since you were lying on the stairwell due to your lunging at the creature. When its torso was at your eye level, you released one of its legs and threw your right hand at its chest. The monster's eyes widened, as it coughed up a pool of blood, covering you in the disgusting substance. Your hand pressed against its chest until you felt your hand sinking into its skin. You had to bite your cheek to keep yourself from throwing up at the texture of the creature's inside. Soon your fingers rested on the beating heart of the monster. Gripping it, you tugged and pulled with all your might.
Meanwhile, Lucian was getting up, but the creature's screams stopped him. His head began to ache in pain, causing him to crash back to the ground. When the heart of the monster was removed from its chest, the heart and the monster began to melt, forming a dead pool of shadows. The ink like substance dripped from your hand into the pool on the floor. Seeing as your coat was already dirty, you wiped the ink like substance on your coat.
With the creature dead, you heard Lucian scream once more. Turning around, you saw a shadowy substance fall from his eyes. Though, you kept your distance wanting to make sure that he was back to normal. As the drops of shadow fell from his eyes to the dirt floor, his gaze landed on you. Tensing slightly, you searched his gaze for any sign of ill intent, as the last drops of shadow vanished from his eyes.
His eyes narrowed before he stood up. Your body froze in fear, as you saw him walk towards you. You had done all you could and so you shut your eyes, waiting for his next move. However, you only felt yourself being pulled into a tight embrace. Lucian rested his chin on top of your head, making you rest against his chest.
"I'm so sorry, my pet. I have no excuse for letting that creature take over my mind."
You didn't know how to reply, you were just glad that he no longer wanted to kill you. Part of you wanted to tell him that it was fine, but in truth it wasn't fine, you weren't fine. Your body hurt all over and your mind was filled with doubt.
"Lucian, would drinking my blood really allow you to go through the barrier?"
Tightening his grip, he replied, "No, it wouldn't. Listen my pet; everything I said while I was under the monster's control was false. There would be no benefit in me drinking your blood; it would only make me a murderer."
"Then, you don't think me a weak hybrid," you questioned further.
He pulled back from you and looked at you with warmth in his eyes, stating, "No, I don't. Besides you did just kill that monster. That proves that strength resides within you. Moreover, you're not the first hybrid to exist, there have been others. Though, they did not last past a second outside of their mother's womb. You, my pet, are the first one to survive. Surely that proves that you're not weak".
Hearing his words, your breath caught in your throat. There were others, but they had all died.
"Why didn't you tell me this before?"
"I saw no reason to. Though, now, I saw it appropriate to tell you."
Just nodding your head, you looked away from him. At the moment you just wanted to rest, yet there was still a mask piece to be retrieved. Lucian noticed your tired state and sighed. He knew he was the cause of it. Thus he grabbed both of your wrists and healed the damage that he had caused. You let out a sigh of relief, as he repaired the wounds that he had caused. After he finished with your wrists, he rested his hands on both sides of your neck. When he finished, he kissed your forehead lightly, earning a faint blush from you. However, you weren't expecting his next course of action. Allowing you no time to protest, he picked you up bridal style and began to walk back down the stairs.
"I can walk. Besides I'm covered in blood and dirt," you stated simply, trying your best to hide your tired nature.
"I know that you're tired, so let me carry you. My pet, I scared and hurt you, so please just let me help you get to our next destination Moreover, I don't care if you're covered in blood and dirt."
Personally, you didn't have it in you to argue with him and so you just nodded. A faint light, created by Lucian, followed you two, illuminating the path ahead. The walls had the same green paint on them while broken lights hung from the ceiling with cut wires hanging by them. However, you paid little attention to your surroundings. Instead you closed your eyes and rested your head against Lucian's chest, deciding that if you fell asleep he would wake you up when the two of you arrived at the barrier. However, you never did fall asleep, but you did feel better, having closed your eyes for awhile, which allowed your mind to relax as well .
Soon the two of you arrived at the barrier. Opening your eyes, since you noticed that Lucian had stopped walking, you saw a steel door in front of you. Lucian set you down on your feet and signaled for you to open the door.
"I would open the door for you, but the door is the barrier itself, so I cannot touch it or pass onto the other side of it. Thus please be careful, my pet. For your safe keeping take this light with you as well as this sword with you."
In his hands was one of the flaming swords he had used on the patients. You were hesitant in taking it, since you were afraid of it burning you. Though, Lucian assured you that no such thing would happen. Thus you took it in your hands and found the flame surprisingly calming and cool. With the light floating by your head and the sword in your hand, you opened the door and entered past the barrier. As the door closed behind you, you saw another light floating next to Lucian, meaning that Lucian still had his own light source. He gave you a small smile, as he vanished from your sight.
