Chapter 10 - Are you a... Una-werewolf??
LOCKWOOD CELLAR
Aella was stunned by the revelation; there was another journal about the supernatural. Even more surprising, it was written the same year Stefan and Damon had been turned. If George Lockwood knew about werewolves and was one, did that mean he knew about other supernatural beings?
Aella opened her mouth to question Mason about the journal when she saw his eyes darting around the room in disgust. Standing up, she wiped the dirt from her jeans and looked between Mason and Tyler, "How about we take a walk through the woods, and you can tell us what you learned from George's journal?" Mason didn't look convinced, and so Aella quickly added, "I can tell you more about me and my powers at the same time."
That seemed to be acceptable to Mason as he slowly stood up and dusted himself off. As he walked past her and his nephew, Tyler looked at Aella in confusion, "Why are we leaving here? It's fine, and it's private."
Aella rolled her eyes as she kicked the chains by her feet, "It's also the spot Mason was going to chain himself up and suffer hours of torture." She walked out of the cell as she said over her shoulder, "Anyway, it's not like we don't know where he lives."
When she left, Tyler took the time to really look around the room. If Mason was speaking the truth and George Lockwood was a werewolf too, did he lock himself up as his body tortured itself? Suddenly the scratches, dents, and chains made the room feel way too creepy. As he followed his friend and uncle out, he made a promise to himself he would never have to use this room like his uncle and ancestor had done.
LOCKWOOD PROPERTY
As Tyler emerged from the cellar, he looked to Aella as she stood next to Mason, scrunching her nose in disgust, "What's with the face."
Aella looked between Mason and Tyler, "What's that smell?"
The uncle and nephew looked confused at the witch, as they both inhaled both, even with Mason's supernatural smell, they could smell nothing foul in the air. Mason shook his head, "There's nothing bad around Aella."
"No," Aella shook her head, nose still scrunched. "Not bad, just odd."
Tyler rolled his eyes, "It's the smell of the forest."
Mason looked at Tyler in disbelief until Aella shook her head again and declared, "I don't like it." Then she pushed past the two and started walking in a random direction.
Mason let out a genuine chuckle for the first time that morning, "She's still the weird Aella."
Tyler snorted as he began following Aella, "Add the magical powers, and you can tell why everything we've faced is petrified of her."
Mason shook his head before he followed after his nephew.
SALVATORE BOARDING HOUSE
For once, Katherine was silent after her revelation that she knew something about George Lockwood before she resided in Mystic Falls, and he knew she was a vampire. She had revealed much of her time in 1864, but she had yet to tell them what it was she had demanded from the Lockwood heir.
"You know, we can sit here as long as you want." Stefan shrugged from his place next to Caroline. "And when you start to desiccate, there's a tomb with your name on it."
Caroline smiled brightly down at her, "I know an extraordinary witch that has the power to do that."
Katherine's eyes narrowed on Caroline for the umpteenth time. Caroline had quickly realized that when she mentioned Aella in any way, Katherine became quite irritated and promptly dropped the innocent act. Of course, Caroline had jumped on that bandwagon and began mentioning her best friend whenever she could; it was something the blonde was enjoying very much.
"That little troll?" Katherine scoffed. "I'll enjoy ripping the skin from her tiny bones."
"Well..." Caroline shrugged carelessly. "Dynamite comes in small packages. Aella is twice the person you are. It's no wonder Stefan ignored your doppelganger the minute he locked eyes on her... he didn't need a Katherine 2.0 when he's got the best with Aella."
Katherine chuckled sinister-like, "You better watch your back."
"Really?" Caroline feigned interest as she stepped towards the vampire, ignoring Stefan's call for her to go upstairs. "Because you... you should stop spending so much time on yours." Glancing at Stefan with pride, Caroline ignored Katherine's snarls, "I'll be upstairs getting some air; something just smells so out-of-date down here."
Stefan held back his humor as Caroline walked out of the cell, unaware of the dagger being stared at her back.
LOCKWOOD PROPERTY
"George Lockwood was a soldier who fought for the Confederate Army in the Civil War," Mason told Aella and Tyler as they walked the large Lockwood property. "Like us-" he motioned to Tyler, "-he was unaware of the curse until he made his first human kill in battle."
"Wait a second..." Aella paused them all, hand on Mason's chest. "He was unaware?"
Mason looked down at her in confusion, missing her accentuation of the word, unaware. "Yeah."
Aella's lips quirked, and Tyler groaned to himself; that look was never a promising sight. "So he was a werewolf, who didn't know he was a werewolf - like you - wouldn't that make him an unawarewolf?"
Aella's grin broadened as she looked between the two Lockwood's, who stared straight at her, "Oh, c'mon!" She whined when she wasn't present with any emotion. "Una-werewolf... It's funny!"
Mason sadly tapped her head with comfort, "Never change, Aella." He began walking away as Aella looked to Tyler, hoping for a reaction from him. The teen only rolled his eyes, "That was terrible."
The witch pouted and began trailing after them, "Well aren't you two just a couple scoops of grumpy in a bowl full of bitchy this morning."
As she followed, Tyler questioned Mason, hoping to forget the travesty that just took place, "Did he stay?"
Mason nodded, "It happened once a month, and he was able to keep it a secret from those around him. It's when he returned to Mystic Falls, a hero, that everything changed."
Aella paused, her eyes going wide as she recalled Johnathan Gilbert's journals, "The mauling."
The two Lockwood's looked back at her in confusion. Aella stepped towards them, "In Johnathan Gilbert's journals. He mentioned it was a set of maulings that formed the council, yet Damon was adamant it wasn't the vampires. Instead, it was George Lockwood, right?"
Mason's lip quirked, "You're too smart for your own good sometimes, Aella." The witch only stared at him until he nodded in confirmation at her question, "But you're right. George Lockwood couldn't control himself as well as he did while fighting; the smell of the vampires in his hometown only made him more rabid."
Tyler frowned, "But if he didn't know about the curse or werewolves, how did he know about vampires?"
"One confronted him," Mason answered, and they began walking again. "She knew about the deaths and somehow knew it was all connected to him. She promised she wouldn't tell a soul if he swore to help her."
Aella froze for a moment; the 'she' Mason was talking about sounded awful, like the manipulative vampire that was tied up in Stefan's dungeon. She began walking again, pleased the two men hadn't seen her pause; she didn't want to even think of Katherine today. Especially since the man Katherine was obsessed with was Aella's boyfriend.
"What did she want?" Tyler asked him, keen to learn more.
"He didn't say," Mason shrugged. Aella noticed he was actually telling the truth. "I think he was worried if his journal was found, it'd be worse than discovering he was a werewolf.
Aella was now confident the vampire was Katherine; she had betrayed her fellow vampires to escape Mystic Falls, and everyone believed she was dead. The vital question was, why? Why go through all the trouble to fake your own death and betray everyone she knew?
Tyler suddenly stopped, and Aella, so caught up in her thoughts of Katherine, ran into him. He spared her a confused glance before he turned that confusion on Mason, "But it doesn't make sense. Why would the town take a vampire's word over George's? He was a member of the founding families. They knew of vampires, no one knew about werewolves, and from what we've seen of you-" he gestured to Mason, "-werewolves are a hell of more difficult to identify than vampires."
"Tyler's right," Aella moved next to him. She paused as she reflected on what she had just said, "Which I cannot believe I just said out loud. But he is-" she dodged Tyler's elbow. "Vampires have to deal with the sun, hunger, vervain-" she nodded at Mason, "-werewolves. What are a werewolf's weaknesses?" Mason didn't answer, and the two teens shared heavy sighs as Aella tiredly shrugged her shoulders, "Seriously? I tell you my boyfriend's weakness, and you still can't tell us the truth?!"
Running a hand over his face, Mason finally nodded, "Fine. You're right; compared to vampires, I don't have as many weaknesses. The only time I've found myself uncontrollable is during the full moon, and the only thing I've found that eases some of that unruliness is wolfsbane."
Aella shifted her stance, "How much have you pushed the wolfsbane?" They had seen him try to drink it, but it was poisonous and hard to consume like vervain. Stefan still struggled with a little each morning despite how long he'd been drinking. It would take him years to become immune to vervain poisoning; could the same be said for werewolves and wolfsbane?
Mason swallowed heavily, "It was like swallowing pure acid. I've only been able to sip it a few times, then my body shuts down, unable to force myself to drink it anymore."
So it was like vervain.
"So we've got the full moon and wolfsbane," Aella ticked off with her fingers. "What about the anger?"
Mason shook his head, "The anger you learn to deal with. The only two you can't is when it's the full moon or if someone poisoned me with wolfbane." Mason then clicked his fingers at Aella, "And now I know your magic can deal with me; I've never been able to not fight against the strength of someone, except..." His eyes widened. He pointed at the brunette, "The night of the carnival, you used your magic when I faced Stefan!"
Aella immediately shook her head, eyes wide, "No I did not!"
Mason laughed humorlessly, finger still pointing, "And you're as just a shitty liar as you were when I babysat you. You cheated, I'm the arm wrestling champion."
Tyler looked at the two unimpressed, "Are you two done?"
Mason pushed Tyler away playfully, "You just don't want to have to live with the man who took your title."
"Yeah," Aella repeatedly nodded, agreeing with Tyler; she would not reveal it was her magic that meant Stefan had won the title. "We were talking about serious matters."
Mason rolled his eyes, "Well, seriously, only three things can weaken me. Two of them the vampire might not have heard of, and risking getting bitten on a full moon probably wasn't an option for them."
"So what did the vampire have that George needed?" Aella wondered out loud. When Mason's eyes darted away, Aella was fed up with the secrets he was continuing to keep, "You know! You're about as subtle as a Jehovah's Witness on your doorstep!"
"Fine!" Mason held his hands up in defeat. "There was something else in the journal..." When he saw she wasn't going to budge, he sighed, "Maybe it's best if I showed you."
As he began returning to the cellar, Aella looked at Tyler, "It's no wonder I've got trust issues... I have trust issues because people have lying issues."
Tyler only shrugged, "At least he's sharing the journal."
The two began following Mason as Aella raised a brow at her friend, "You mean George Lockwood's journal he's hidden in another part of the cellar?"
Tyler smirked at her, "You caught that too?"
Aella laughed sharply, "A blind cow could have seen it."
Tyler paused to look at her, "A blind cow?"
Aella only shrugged, "Well, the blind part is self-explanatory... the cow? I missed breakfast, and I'm really craving a Mystic burger."
SALVATORE BOARDING HOUSE
Caroline had left Katherine to Stefan; he had much more to say to his sire than Caroline needed to at that moment. But when she heard banging and shouting coming from the cellar, she jumped up from Stefan's bed, where she had been reading her magazine, and ran as fast as she could.
Just as she reached the cellar, she saw Katherine throw Stefan into one of the cell walls, all of a sudden free as she crouched in front of Stefan. There she revealed her true intentions that morning, "I have been sipping vervain every single day for the last 145 years. You caught me by surprise once; I wasn't gonna let it happen again. It doesn't hurt me, Stefan."
Once again, they'd underestimated Katherine as Stefan met Caroline's eyes for a moment, "Why?"
Katherine stroked the apple of his cheek, "I told you, I missed you, Stefan." She glanced over at Caroline with a proud smirk before looking back down at him, "I just wanted to spend some time with you."
With a boldness she did not know she had, Caroline ran into the cell to protect her friend. Unfortunately, Katherine would not be rendered surprised like she had that morning and flicked Caroline away with a push of the hand. Her free hand reached for the stake Stefan had thrown away and stabbed it through the vampire's thigh.
Caroline winced at Stefan's pained cry and moved to help him when Katherine sped over to her and took hold of her neck tightly. Caroline gasped out in pain as she felt the bones in her neck breaking at Katherine's force. The elder vampire snarled down at her, "The only reason you're still alive is so I can kill you in front of your darling, Aella. So she can suffer even more before I finally kill her myself."
With a twist of her wrists, Katherine broke the blonde's neck and tossed her to the floor, as Stefan could only watch on in horror. Caroline would re-awaken, but it still made Stefan feel sick at the lack of moment from the usual bubbly blonde. He was able to pull out the stake with a muffled cry as Katherine glided over to him smugly and crouched before him. The hands that had just broken his friend's neck stroked his ever so lovingly as she murmured, "We will be together again, Stefan. I promise."
Before he could declare that would never happen, Katherine was gone, and with a tired sigh, Stefan fell to the floor. Katherine 1 - Stefan 0.
LOCKWOOD CELLAR
"What a bitch!" Aella growled as she paced the cellar, reading the journal. "God! I hate her so much!"
Tyler raised a brow at her pacing form, "Who?"
Aella stopped her pacing and scowled at him, "Katherine freakin' Pierce! I knew she was a psycho, but she's actually Michael Myers kind of crazy. Bitch just doesn't know when to stop."
Mason raised a weary brow, "How can you be sure George is talking about this Katherine girl?"
Aella scoffed, "Because my Katherine Pierce Psychotic Meter is maxed out. It can't not be her. She somehow got George to get her out of the tomb before it was set on fire. What she didn't know and what George definitely didn't know is that Damon got Emily Bennett to protect the vampires. She channeled the energy of an over-passing comet to empower herself with enough energy and strength to trap the vampires inside of the tomb. Only Emily discovered too late that Katherine had escaped. She was burned at the stake by the Founders' Council. Katherine betrayed her too."
Mason couldn't argue with her; she knew so much more than he did. She turned to him and held out the journal, "Show me what George got from Katherine?"
Mason took the journal from her and found the right page; when he gave it back to her, their hands touched, and Aella was thrown into a vision. The two men looked at her with concern at her gasp when her eyes glowed for a moment; when they returned to their natural color Aella gasped again, and her eyes focused on Mason. What he didn't expect was her to scowl and throw her hand at him, once again throwing him into the cell wall, only this time as she advanced towards him, fire emerged from her hands as she screamed, "Why did I see you kissing, Katherine Pierce?!"
.................................................
.................................................
Tyler could only look on in shock at Aella's sudden actions; Mason, for the first time, looked worried at what she'd do. "Aella!" Tyler exclaimed at her, but the witch did not listen as she stepped closer and closer to Mason.
Mason could feel the warmth from the fire as Aella drew closer to him; she didn't even have to hold him against the wall with her hand as she had done earlier. Aella leaned into Mason, not caring who he was. She knew without a doubt he had not been kissing Elena; she just knew it was Katherine. "Why have you been kissing Katherine Pierce?"
"Katherine Pierce?" Mason gasped out in complete confusion. "The vampire from 1864, that's not possible."
Aella laughed humorlessly, "I'm a witch dating a vampire, you're a werewolf... you know anything is possible, Mason. Now tell me, why would I see you kissing Katherine?"
"I don't know what you're talking about," Mason gulped at her, but Aella could see he was lying again.
"Aella..." Tyler hesitantly stepped forward. "He said he doesn't know."
"And he's lying, Tyler," Aella scowled at his uncle. "Just like he's been lying since he arrived here. Katherine is Elena's doppelganger; if he's seen Elena - which he has - then he knows more than he's letting on." She was sick of being behind; this time, she would beat Katherine. Aella glanced at her fire before looking back at Mason, "Now, I wonder what fire will do to you?"
Mason panted as her hand grew closer to him; when he felt the flames flicker at his skin, he screamed out, "Okay, I know! Her name is Kathy. Her name is Kathy!"
Aella pulled back her hand but didn't let him go from against the wall; she scowled at the name, "Kathy? How original."
Mason gasped for air as he tried to control his beating heart. He was powerless against Aella; for the first time since he'd become a werewolf, Mason was utterly powerless. His eyes narrowed at Aella as he repeated, "Her name is Kathy, she's been with me since I turned, and she is nothing like the Katherine Pierce you spoke of."
Aella stared him down for a minute until she flicked her hand, and her fire disappeared, and he fell from the wall, once again. "Finally..." Aella muttered, turning from Mason and walking to a bewildered Tyler. "We have the truth."
Mason scoffed from his position on the floor, "Like you can talk about truth."
Aella struggled to hold back her anger as she recalled her argument with Matt only days before, "The difference, Mason, Is that I'm hiding the truth to protect everyone while you are helping the vampire that killed my best friend!"
Mason shook his head, "You're lying. Kathy wouldn't hurt a fly."
Tyler crouched down and picked George Lockwood's journal off the floor and sifted through it as Aella and Mason continued. "And what was her excuse for being Elena's double?"
Mason laughed uneasily, "Okay, so there's some similarities."
Aella actually laughed out loud at his answer, "Are you kidding, Mason? She's her exact double; she's her doppelganger which is described as 'someone who looks exactly like another person.' There's not just some similarities; they are identical."
Mason was quiet, and he purposely looked away from her. Aella tiredly rubbed her eyes; when she glanced over at Tyler, his eyes narrowed as they stared down at the page in front of him, "What's wrong?"
Tyler looked over at Mason. Instead of answering Aella, he questioned Mason, "Is this the stone you've been searching everywhere for?"
Aella looked between them confused, "What stone?"
Tyler ignored her again and asked Mason more forcefully, "Is it?" When Mason nodded hesitantly, Tyler scoffed and handed Aella the book, "Read those pages."
Aella glanced slowly between the Lockwood's until she looked down at the book and began reading aloud, "'We would take each other's secrets to the grave, that's what we promised one another. She was now gone, the vampires were now dead, and finally, I had the stone. The moonstone will reverse this curse laid upon me and my bloodline, I will be free, and no one would know of my deal with the devil'." Aella looked to Mason in disbelief, "So you've known about this moonstone this entire time and said nothing?"
"Because it's my burden to bear," Mason snapped at her. "I'm the only werewolf; I didn't need to tell anybody."
Aella was stunned, "Are you kidding, Mason?! There's a stone that can reverse the werewolf curse, and you believe you're the only werewolf in the whole world? That's not being ignorant, that stupidity at its finest."
Mason opened his arms, "Then why have we heard nothing of them?"
Tyler raised a brow at that pitiable answer, "Did you know about vampires, werewolves, doppelgangers, and witches before you turned?"
Mason was a little too quiet when he chose not to answer his nephew. Aella crouched down in front of him, "Well, unlike you, we did our research. The Lockwood's are not the only werewolves in this world. The specialist we found, she's traced werewolves back to the middle ages and found evidence of them in New Orleans and North Carolina even now."
"No," Mason shook his head rapidly. "We're the only ones."
Aella's eyes narrowed, "We're?"
"No, I mean me, and Tyler. I am the only one unless Tyler turns. Our ancestors created this, and it's the only way for the curse to be reversed."
Aella ignored his mix up and scoffed, "And did Kathy tell you that?"
Mason's eyes darted away from her instead of answering. Aella stood up, laughing grimly, "God, she's good."
Mason seemed to have enough; he pushed himself up and stormed out of the cell, glaring at Aella, "You're wrong." She pushed past the two and began leaving the cell, "You're so wrong."
As he emerged from the tomb, he pretended not to hear Aella's parting words, "I wish we were, Mayo. But we're not."
Tyler looked back at Aella once Mason had departed, "Should we go after him?"
Aella shook her head, "No, he needs some time to reflect."
"And you're sure?" Tyler questioned her hesitantly. "About Katherine and Kathy being the same person."
"Oh yeah," Aella nodded with absolute certainty. "This is Katherine, one hundred percent."
Tyler shuffled on the spot, "So what does she want with Mason?"
Aella bit her lip as she shook her head, "I don't know," she mumbled, looking down at the journal in her hand. "But if she's encouraging Mason to find this moonstone, it can't be for his benefit. Katherine needs this stone, and it can't be for something good."
Tyler scratched the back of his head as he glanced around the cellar. Aella raised a brow at his movements when he looked back down at her and questioned, "Has he gone?"
"Mason?" Aella confirmed confusedly, "Yea-"
"-like completely sure?" Tyler interrupted impatiently.
It caused Aella to worry, and with a swirl of her wrist, Tyler felt his ears pop as her eyes glowed slightly. She smiled softly at him as she revealed, "I've spelled us in a silent containment, what you tell me, no one else will be able to hear, supernatural or not."
Tyler was silent for a few seconds until he revealed, "I have it." Before Aella could question what he 'had' Tyler's hand entered his pocket, and from it, he pulled out a translucent, milky-colored, flat stone. Aella stared down at the stone in disbelief as Tyler concluded, handing it to her, "I have the moonstone, and I think you should have it."
