Chapter 54 - This Magic Moment

GILBERT HOUSEHOLD

When Aella ran back downstairs after a few minutes in her sweats, she could hear Damon asking how the vampire got in, Aella answered the question as she stepped into the room. "I was thinking the same thing until I realized what had happened last night."

Elena thought of last night, then closed her eyes with a groan at the realization, "The pizza guy."

Damon looked between the girls, and rolled his eyes, "Context please."

Aella sat on the arm of the chair Stefan had sat in, her bare feet bundling themselves between Stefan's legs without thought. "Jenna's still new to the vampire world, she accidentally invited the pizza boy in. Something she does every time, to be polite... do you need a thesaurus to see what that word means, Damon?"

Damon chose to ignore the tiny brunette and instead looked to Elena, "Well, he gets points for that. Did he say what he wanted?"

"No," Elena replied in a deadpan voice. "He was too busy trying to kill me."

Aella had to snort at Elena's tone. She was seriously spending too much time with Aella, something Elena must have also noticed as she winked over at Aella.

Stefan ignored the two, squeezing his girlfriend's feet in warning not to push Damon, and looked to his brother "And you have no idea who this is?"

The two girls also turned to Damon, who was quick to hold his hands out, "No." At Stefan's unconvinced stare and the snort coming from Aella, Damon continued, "Don't look at me like that. I told you we had company."

"The question is, is there more than one," Aella shrugged, looking between the two brothers.

Damon sat next to Elena, and Aella did not miss how Elena seemed to lean into the elder Salvatore brother almost instantly, "I don't know."

Stefan looked at his brother, "Damon, he was invited in."

Damon nodded, understanding what Stefan is hinting at, "Then we go get him tonight," he looked between Elena and Aella, "You both up for it?"

Aella just raised an eyebrow in his direction, before her gaze settled on Elena, who rubbed her sweaty palms on her pants, "What do we have to do?"

Damon smirked, "You've officially got a date for the dance. We just gotta wait on Pixie..." He looked over at Aella "...unless she's decided to go as a hobo. Not sure if they wore sweats back then?"

Damon missed the book from the bookshelf behind him, fly towards his head until the large thesaurus hit his head, sending him off the couch and onto the floor.

"Oops," Aella smirked as she walked past the vampire, the both of them ignoring Elena's snickers and Stefan sigh.

Damon glared at Stefan when he heard the witches footsteps go upstairs, "You just had to find the most annoying witch in the world to fall in love with."

Stefan's straight face fell into a small grin at the annoyance in Damon's voice, it wasn't often Damon was bested, and even he couldn't keep a straight face in those moments.

Elena ignored the words Damon had just growled out and looked between the brothers, her brain wondering over Damon's words, "How is going to the dance going to help?"

"We'll see who shows up," Damon shrugged. "Everyone in this house will be there if he's targeting you, the dance will be the best place to try and get you again. It's the vamps only chance at a surprise."

Stefan wasn't too sure, and neither was Elena, "That sounds like a bad idea."

"Till we get him, this house isn't safe," Damon told them two of them. "For anyone who lives in it. It's worth a shot."

"I agree."

Stefan turned towards Aella voice, his eyes widening at her costume, particularly the skin-tight black pleather capri pants she was wearing. Elena smirked at Stefan's lack of words, but that faded when she turned, expecting a sarcastic comment from Damon at Aella agreeing with him. Instead, she was greeted with Damon looking at Aella with the same look as his brothers. Damon's eyes taking in Aella's bad girl 50s costume in a way he hadn't with Elena's.

Elena coughed the uncomfortable feeling away, drawing attention to herself, "We'll do it."

Stefan looked anxiously between Elena and Aella until the witch walked over to him and took Stefan's hand in her own, looking up at him. "We'll be fine, as long as you both stay close."

Stefan turned to his brother, eyes serious enough for no comment to be made by Damon, and for the elder Salvatore to nod seriously at his brother. No one would get these two, or any member of the Gilbert family tonight.

It ended tonight.

MYSTIC FALLS HIGH SCHOOL

'This Magic Moment' blasted around the gym as students danced to the classic 50s hit by The Drifters. A favorite of Aella's, as it was from The Sandlot, the movie she and her dad used to have on repeat as she grew up. Aella swung to the song as she and Stefan entered the dance holding hands, Stefan smiling at the bliss that showed on his girlfriends face. She had told him the story as she put the playlist for the dance together one night - soon, homework was abandoned, and Aella introduced him to the classic.

Aella waved at Jenna, who stood with Alaric, and when her History saw who Jenna was waving at her, too started waving, but the smile dropped, and it was replaced by shock. Aella followed Alaric's gaze, and frowned when it rested on Damon and Elena when she turned back to her teacher, he and Jenna were gone.

Stefan pulled Aella closer when he noticed more eyes than usual on his girlfriend, "This place looks great."

Aella's arms encircled Stefan's waist, and she smiled, looking at the joy on everyone's faces, "Not bad for 2 hours of hard work."

There was a snort, and when Aella looked over her shoulder, Elena was standing there with her brow raised, "Don't you mean 2 hours of hard work for Caroline and me? You slept the whole time!"

Aella playfully smirked as Stefan chuckled at what Elena had said, Aella just shrugged, "Semantics." But quickly winked at her friend.

Elena just shook her head before she noticed her brother manning the punch bowl, "I see Jeremy is still alive."

"Ugh," Aella groaned. "Only just." When Stefan raised his own brow at her, she just shook her head. She didn't need Stefan angry at the younger Gilbert when he should be focused. She'd tell him after all this drama was, hopefully, dealt with tonight.

When the starting beats for 'Jailhouse Rock' started sounding through the gym, Aella knew she wanted to dance and have some sense of normality for one. Without giving Stefan a choice, she pulled her boyfriend onto the dance floor, "Time to dance, boyfriend."

Ignoring his groans.

..............................................

Alaric and Jenna walked across the dancefloor, punch cups in hand assessing the closeness students were dancing. As they reached the other side, Alaric smirked as he took a drink, "I am shocked the punch is not spiked."

Jenna laughed at the statement after taking her own sip, "Jeremy is actually doing his job. I'm a proud Aunt."

"You know..." Alaric turned to watch the dance floor "...I was not expecting this Jeremy after what I was warned off when I arrived. Aella too."

Jenna nodded, "They're both so understood. Aella more than Jeremy simply because that's just her personality, but Jeremy has really changed for the better. I'm glad you see this, Jeremy."

"Losing someone you love so suddenly, the, uh," Alaric frowned, thinking of the right description, "the trauma and the grief there are some of the tougher things he'll face in life.

Jenna smiled sadly up at him, "From someone who knows." She frowned slightly, "You have no idea what happened?"

Alaric only held his hands up, helplessly, "That's the hard part, not knowing."

"Is it ok to talk about your wife?" Jenna asked uncertainly.

Alaric shrugged, "Heh. There's not much to talk about."

Jenna felt so sorry for the man, she thought there was no pain like losing a loved one. But not knowing if that loved one was alive, dead, happy, hurt, the fear would never end. "That must be impossible to deal with, not having any answers."

"I'd be lying to you if I told you it didn't keep me up at night," Alaric sipped his punch again. He began watching the kids again, his eyes resting on a very familiar figure. "Wondering why, by who."

Jenna, oblivious to Alaric's intense stare, just nodded, "Maybe one day."

Alaric eyes narrowed, "Hope so... Hey, who's that with Elena."

Jenna followed where Alaric was looking and only groaned at who she saw, "That is a pain in my ass... His name is Damon Salvatore."

Alaric nostrils flared at the name, "Damon Salvatore."

MYSTIC GRILL

Matt smiled as he cleaned off the table for the family that had just arrived, he moved back to the bar placing the grey tray on the wooden surface. He pulled out his cloth from his pocket, ready to return, and wipe the table clean when two hands rested on his eyes, and a familiar voice whispered, "Surprise."

Matt's eyes widened, and he turned quickly to see Caroline and Bonnie standing there. Caroline, not wearing the costume she had so happily decided on last week, "What are you doing here?" He pulled Caroline in for a hug, looking over her shoulder at Bonnie, "What are you both doing here?"

Caroline pulled back and looked up at Matt, "Spending time with you, even if you're working, is more important than a dance."

Matt was speechless and pulled Caroline back in tight, smiling again over at Bonnie, "Thank you."

Bonnie quickly snorted, "Oh, you better be thankful, ask the chairman of the School Council who she left in charge."

Caroline pulled back, a guilty smile on her face, that told Matt exactly who Caroline had left in charge, "Oh man...You left Aella!"

"Bingo!" Bonnie chimed, ignoring Caroline's glare.

"She's fine," Caroline waved off the shock, ignoring both Matt and Bonnie's looks of indeterminacy. "She is!" The blonde exclaimed again, only to bite her lip once their faces didn't change, "...I hope."

MYSTIC FALLS HIGH SCHOOL

Stefan laughed as Aella swung her hips to the song, excessive enough to be gathering more and more looks. The had Hand Jived, Bunny Hopped, and Jitterbugged, forgetting that people were watching them, and instead, they were having fun. When Elvis had come on again, Aella was quick to show Stefan her Elvis hips and his famous pout.

Soon the song changed to a slow one, and Aella moved forward and wrapped her arms around Stefan, the two of them swaying to the music, "So..." Aella breathlessly started, "...have you been watching our surroundings at all."

Stefan pulled her closer, "You see, that's the beauty of being a vampire, I can have all my attention on you... but when you're in any amount of danger, I know I would sense something."

"Be still my fast pacing heart," Aella ahhed and chose to place a peck on Stefan's lips.

When she pulled back, Stefan asked, "So I'm guessing you haven't seen him either?"

"Not unless he's wearing polka dots-" Aella motioned to her own top, then nodded to Stefan's hair- "Or has a pompadour."

"Wow!" Stefan realized as he looked around, it was the only style the guys were wearing, if their hair was long enough, "Not one of the better fashion trends."

Aella pulled back in shock, "Are you kidding me? I love the pompadour, I bet you killed it in the 50s..." She then hummed, "Do you have any pictures?"

"Nope!" Stefan shook his head firmly. "Burned. Buried."

Aella cackled at his resolve, "I bet Lexie has some."

"Nope!" Stefan exclaimed again, but Aella could see the slight smirk that was pulling at his straight face and knew Lexie did have them.

"My dad would have loved to hear about the fifties," Aella smiled up at him. "Stand By Me, The Godfather, Forrest Gump, Goodfella's; anything set in the 50s we would watch together."

Stefan smiled at the memories, but rose his bow at one choice, "The Godfather?"

Aella laughed at that, "Six years old, horses are my favorite animal, and there it is... the horse head in the bed. I had nightmares for a week; Dad slept on the blow-up bed in my room for the week. Mom wasn't very happy."

Stefan laughed at the story and nodded, "I bet."

"Could you imagine if you've met more of my family members," Aella wondered out loud. "I mean other than Emily."

Stefan only smiled at her, "I have."

Aella's head shot up, "What?"

"October 1969," Stefan nodded. "A teenage girl leading the only anti-war sit-in within miles of Mystic Falls."

Aella smiled brightly, "Grams."

Stefan nodded, kissing the hand that was now resting on his chest, "You know, when she spoke, people were mesmerized. I know I was. This young girl, berating people two/three times her age, and them listening to her. That's when I see her in you."

"I love you."

Stefan kissed her lips and whispered the words back to her, "I love you too."

..............................................

..............................................

Jeremy kept his eyes focused, looking around the ample space for a tiny, angry Aella to suddenly appear. Elena and Jenna both said she was here with Stefan, he was just dreading that moment she would.

"You neglected to mention this was a theme party."

Jeremy's eyes widened when he saw Anna standing to the side of him, "What are you doing here?"

Anna shrugged, looking around the room, "Well, seeing as you also neglected to invite me, I took matters into my own hands."

Jeremy felt uncomfortable. He moved a little away from Anna to get more cups, when there were already plenty of cups on the table, "You're doin' that thing again."

"What 'thing' would that be?" Anna watched him, her brow raised.

Jeremy placed the cups on the table, ignoring how uncomfortable telling the truth was, "That thing where you pretend we're dating, even though we're not."

Anna looked at him and sarcastically said, "Oh, you mean stalking. Yeah-" she laughed "-Get over yourself." She gestured to the decorated gym, and Jeremy started to feel a tad comfier when she laughed at his words. "Come on. I've never been to a school dance before. Humor me."

MYSTIC GRILL

"What do you want to order?" Caroline asked Bonnie, Matt, now back working but throwing loving smiles in Caroline's direction every other minute.

When her best friend didn't say anything, Caroline looked to her and noticed Bonnie's eyes were focused on the bar. Caroline smirked, leaning closer to her, "Be a little more obvious, Bonnie."

Bonnie simply pushed Caroline's face away, "Don't rain on my hot-guy parade."

"What?" Caroline snorted. "That is not rain, that is just a drizzle. Ben McKittrick? Really?"

Bonnie shrugged, "He's hot. And not all of us have boyfriends who keep lovingly staring at them every two minutes."

Caroline and Bonnie looked over at Matt, just in time to see him smile lovingly at Caroline again then returning to cleaning the table he was at.

Instead of continuing her complaint of Ben, Caroline just sighed, "You're right."

MYSTIC FALLS HIGH SCHOOL

Anna carries three stacks of paper cups over to Jeremy, who takes them from her, "You don't go to school here. You know you don't have to help."

Anna waved him off, "Oh, I don't mind. It's fun." She watched the dancers again, then looked to Jeremy as if she remembered something, "Oh, um, yeah. Before I forget, can I borrow your ancestor's journal?"

Jeremy distracted by the three seniors standing suspiciously by the punch bowl, "Why?"

"You said I could read it."

The three seniors left, and Jeremy looked back to Anna, "Uh, I don't have it."

Anna lightly chuckled, "Oh. Well, obviously, you didn't bring it here, uh, but I can walk you home."

Jeremy winced at the thought of Aella's reaction when he had revealed the new whereabouts of the journal. "No. I mean, I gave it to my history teacher."

"Wait," Anna raised her hand up at the teenager, desperate not to let her anger take over. "That's what you were talking about earlier? It's why you were hiding from someone. Why did you give it to him?"

Jeremy shrugged, suddenly not feeling so easy as the direct questions started again, "Because he wanted to read it."

Anna shakily sighed, "You know, you shouldn't be giving that to just anybody."

"Believe me, I know," Jeremy grumbled. "But if that's what you think, why I should give it to you?"

Anna shook her head, "Loan. Loan it to me."

"Well, I loaned it to Mr. Saltzman," Jeremy said sarcastically.

Anna suddenly turned desperate, and it was seriously freaking Jeremy out, "Maybe he's in his classroom. We can get it back."

Jeremy firmly shook his head, "If anything, it's going back home, so Aella doesn't kill me. Not give it to someone she's never met before. Do you want to see if it's possible to be killed, then brought back to life, only to be killed again - because Aella will do that to me!"

"Forget it." Anna shrugged, feeling her face start to change with her desperation and anger. Knowing Jeremy knew about the Supernatural world, he would know immediately what she was. "I...I gotta go."

MYSTIC GRILL

Caroline dunked her fries into the ketchup and shoved the bunch of fries into her mouth, "Tonight was so much better on paper."

Bonnie smirked at Caroline, but her eyes still drifted to Ben as she spoke, "Ah, you're only just realizing we came here to support your boyfriend, but with this place empty and us both hating pool we have nothing to do other than eat."

Caroline scowled at how right her best friend sounded, dumping more ketchup covered fries into her mouth, "Fine, yes. But if nothing is happening for me, please do something other than continue eye stalking the bartender."

"You're right." Bonnie nodded and got up, marching over to the bar, missing Caroline's impressed look before she added more fries into her mouth.

Bonnie stopped in front of the bar, "

"Hi."

Ben smiled, looking up from cleaning some glasses, "Twice in one day. Lucky me."

Bonnie leaned on the bar, "I'm proving something to my friend."

Ben looked over at Caroline, smirking at the mouthful of fries she was munching on, "Oh, yeah? What's that?"

"That even though we skipped the school dance, we still don't have to wait for a guy to come up to us."

Ben smirked at her courage and leaned closer to Bonnie, "Does that mean that you're asking me out on a date?"

Bonnie shrugged coyly, "Does that mean you want me to?"

"Well, what did you have in mind?"

Bonnie wasn't expecting that and hesitated at what they could do, "Do you like karaoke?"

Matt and Tyler loved Karaoke night, on the odd occasion when they were invited years ago, she thought that was a good idea until Ben frowned, "No."

Bonnie honestly felt like she would throw up... until Ben smirked again, "But I would really like to go on a date with you."

Bonnie smiled brightly, "Really?"

"Yeah," Ben nodded, looking to the clock. "How bout in five minutes when my shift ends?"

Bonnie looked unsure and glanced back to Caroline for a split second, "Umm."

Ben smiled gently, "Let me put it this way, Matt and I both finish in five minutes, and from the looks, Matty boy has been throwing your friend, I'm pretty sure they won't want you three-wheeling."

Bonnie chuckled and nodded at his words, "No, they would not. I'd love to go out."

Ben smiled brightly, "Great!"
