Part 10: The Quad and the Unexpected Hug

The quad was buzzing with life, a vibrant patchwork of students lounging on the grass, chatting in clusters, and soaking up the afternoon sun. It was one of those rare days when the pressures of school seemed to lift, if only for a moment. I sat with Zephaniah, Paige, and Kimberly, enjoying the break from our usual routine.

The campus events were in full swing, a mix of club tables and impromptu performances. We'd found a good spot near the center, a perfect vantage point to watch the spectacle unfold. Laughter  echoed around us, and for once, I let myself relax.

Zephaniah was deep in conversation with Kimberly about an upcoming art exhibit, while Paige sat beside me, her gaze flicking between the events and something on her phone. It was peaceful, the kind of day that reminded my why I loved this place.

The peace was short-lived, though, as I caught sight of Markell weaving his way through the crowd. It was hard to miss him, the quintessential football star with his easy smile and magnetic presence. He seemed to draw people in wherever he went.

"Hey, Raylynn!" Markell called out, his voice carrying about the noise.

I raised a hand in greeting, trying to muster up a polite smile. I knew why he was here--everyone did. Markell had been hovering around me for weeks, his interest as obvious as the sunshine. And while he was nice enough, I had zero interest in him.

Paige nudge me with her elbow, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Looks like your admirer's here. Think you'll finally say yes to him?"

I rolled my eyes, more amused than annoyed. "Not a chance."

Markell reached us, his grin widening as he greeted everyone. He had a way about him, the kind of charm that seemed to work on most people. Just not me. Paige seemed to delight in the spectacle, clearly waiting to see how this would play out.

"Raylynn, I was hoping you'd join me for dinner sometime," Markell said, undeterred by my past refusals.

I shook my head, trying to let him down gently.  "I appreciate it, Markell, but I've got a lot on my plate right now. Maybe another time."

He took it in stride, nodding as if he'd expected the answer. Paige leaned closer to me, whispering, "You're a tough one to crack. I'm starting to think you might be bisexual, or maybe just picky."

I chuckled, not confirming or denying anything. My dating history was a mystery to most, and I preferred to keep it that way.

Markell, ever persistent, shifted the topic. "I'm coming to your track meet tomorrow. Gotta cheer on our team, right?"

Zephaniah and Kimberly found that adorable, exchanging looks of delight. Paige and I smiled, but it was more about being polite than anything else.

"Thanks, Markell. We appreciate the support," I said, hoping he'd take the hint and leave it at that.

But then he leaned in for a hug, catching me off guard. I stiffened for a moment before awkwardly patting his back, aware of someone snapping a photo nearby. Great, just what I needed--an embarrassing moment captured for posterity.

Markell pulled back, oblivious to my discomfort, and waved as he wandered off to charm another group. I shook my head, wondering how far he'd go before realizing I wasn't interested. It didn't concern me much, though; my focus was on the upcoming meet.

"Ready for tomorrow?" Zephaniah asked, shifting the conversation back to track.

"Always. We've got a lot to set up, though, so let's get going."

We spent the rest of the day helping with preparations for the meet, working alongside our teammates to ensure everything was ready. It was a busy evening, filled with usual camaraderie and shared anticipation of competition.

As we grabbed a late dinner in the dining hall, Paige mentioned something that caught my attention. "You know Imani's team is coming, right?"

I nodded, trying to ignore the flutter of nerves that accompanied any mention of Imani. My history with her was complicated, full of tension and unresolved feelings. I kept my face neutral, not wanting anyone to guess the turmoil inside.

Zephaniah, however, seemed less enthusiastic. "I've got a bad feeling about tomorrow. Just a hunch, but something feels off."

His intuition was rarely wrong, and a chill ran down my spine. I shrugged it off, focusing on the task at hand. Whatever happened, we'd face it together. We always did.

Tomorrow would bring its own challenges and surprises. For now, I was content to live in the moment, surrounded by friends who understood me. And maybe, just maybe, tomorrow would bring some clarity to the chaos swirling around us.
