Part 1
Part 1: The Beginning...
The sun was barely up when the alarm buzzed relentlessly, slicing through the predawn silence of my room. I groaned, rolling over to shit it off, and for a moment, I considered skipping the morning run.
The bed was warm, and the pull of sleep was strong, but the thought of missing even one day of training pushed me to my feet.
I laced up my well-worn down running shoes, their soles molded perfectly to my feet after countless workouts on the track. As I stepped outside, the cool morning air greeted me with a refreshing embrace, chasing away the last remnants of sleep. The sky sky was a soft gray, with the promise of sunrise coloring the horizon.
This was where my journey began--the quiet moments before the world woke up, when the only sound was my rhythmic breathing and the steady pounding of my feet against the pavement. It was in these solitary hours that I found clarity and purpose, laying the foundation for what would become a lifelong passion.
I've been drawn to athletics from a young age. I remember my first race vividly--the nervous excitement bubbling in my stomach, the thrill of the starter pistol, and the pure joy of crossing the finish line. It was a feeling I chased every day, striving to push myself further and faster.
But being a student-athlete is about more than just the races and the trophies. It's about balance, a constant juggling act between academics and athletics. I often find myself studying on the bus rides to away meets or squeezing in a few pages of reading before practice sessions.
My planner is a mess of scriblled notes and highlights dates, each day a careful choreography of classes, training, studying, and rest. I sometimes barely have the urge to eat.
The pressure is relentless, yet I thrive under it. My coaches are 'demanding', a few of my professors strict, but I embrace the challenge. Each obstacle is an opportunity to learn and grow, to discover what I'm truly capable of achieving.
As I finish my run and make my way back home, the sun begins to rise, casting a golden flow over the campus. I pause for a moment taking in the beauty of the morning. It reminds me of why I started this journey in the first place--the love of the sport, the desire to push my limits and unyielding belief that I can excel in both the classroom and on the track.
Just as I'm about to head inside, I hear a familiar voice behind me. "Hey, Raylynn! Wait up!" It's Paige, my closest friend and fellow teammate. She's jogging towards me, her curly hair bouncing with each step.
"What's up, Paige," I say, smiling as she catches up.
Paige is actually in her second year of college and professional Track and Field while I am in my first year here. She was the first person to make me come out my shell and have me open up more. She's someone I look up to.
"Can you believe Coach made us do yesterday? Was that even a sprint workout?" Paige says, falling into step beside me. "My legs are still sore."
I chuckle, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, that was something. But you know what they say, no pain, no gain."
Paige rolls her eyes playfully. "Easy for you to say. You actually look like you get through that sh*t easily."
"You have no idea." I admit. "But you're just as crazy as I am, or you wouldn't be out here this early."
She grins, nudging me with her elbow. "Okay you got me there. But seriously, I think we're gonna rack up some points at the next meet."
Her confidence is infectious, and I feel a renewed sense of determination. "Yeah, we will. We've been working too hard not to."
We walk the rest of the way home, talking and laughing about the upcoming season, our goals, and the funny moment from yesterday's practice. It's these moments of camaraderie that make the hard work worthwhile, remind me that I'm not alone in this journey.
With a deep breath, I head inside, ready to tackle the day ahead. It's only the beginning, but I know that each step I take brings me closer to my dreams. And I'm ready to run as far as my legs will carry me.
