Chapter 26

"The scars of your love
Reminds me of us
They keep me thinking
That we almost had it all."

— Rolling in the Deep// Adele

Okay, maybe this song isn't all too relevant but we all love Adele. I'm getting short of playlist choices, so if you have some suggestions, comment or pm me.

She looked and looked, until starting at it without blinking became hard.

With time, she just froze more.

When she slightly regained her senses, she felt the headache return that was generated due to the lack of sleeping in the past two days. She could as well cry.

In front of her in a stretcher laid a boy— his eyes closed. The boy with whom she had chatted in Skype a few days ago.

The boy she had talked to like they were best friends.

Michael.

Michael Adams.

They were finally meeting. And his eyes were closed. Would they not open? Would they not like to see the coincidence that had just occurred?

Would he not wake up? She screamed in her mind.

A few people looked at her, then moved to attend their own problems in life. A few staffs were carrying the stretcher, just like she had seen them doing during Katherine's.

Behind them was a man, her father's age. She assumed it was his father. He looked shocked, perplexed, grief stricken, guilty, fear ridden, angry— all at once.

Had Brittney not seen him, she would not have known that all of it could be felt together. Or maybe she was acting the same way. Shocked and panicked mostly.

The staffs started moving. They were heading forward fast. She had to run to fall in pace with them.

"What..where..Where are you taking him? What happened?"

A few men turned back to look at her.

The figure who looked like his father approached her. In a cracked, hoarse voice he managed to speak, "Excuse me?"

"Sir, what happened to him?" She was fighting back her tears.

"Who are you? How do you know him?"

She froze. Who was she in his life?

"A friend.."

He frowned. "Really? I don't think he had any such friend."

"Sir, what happened to him?" She repeated. However, she was feeling insulted.

"I do not think it is appropriate to tell you, nor do I know you."

"But I am his.."

He stopped her, raising one hand. "I'm really not in a state of mind to talk. It's an emergency. So if you would please excuse me."

The man did not wait another second. He ran towards the way the staffs were carrying Michael to.

She ran behind them. When they took him to the ICU, she did not advance any further.

Emergency.

ICU.

What had happened to him?

Feeling helpless like never before she sat right there on the floor, partly collapsing. Then hot, thick tears started flowing. The headache was returning, and regret, guilt, helplessness were all circling around.

Resting her head on her knees she cried and cried until the pain felt to have numbed her, until a nurse affectionately put a hand over her head and lifted her from the position she had been sitting on for so long.

"Anything I can do to help you, dear?"

She whispered a 'no' somehow.

"Hey, everything will be alright." The nurse was young, maybe five or six years older than her. Brittney gave a small smile to her.

She gradually made her way to where her parents had been earlier. They were standing there the same way she had left them.

When her father's eyes fell upon hers, he looked as if he had seen something very dreadful. "Brittney, are you...what's wrong?"

She hugged him tightly and again started crying, her face on the crook of his neck.

"Hey, Katherine will be alright." He said, rubbing her back gently.

"No, no..." She whimpered.

"Is it something else?" Her mother asked, genuinely worried.

"Brittney, what happened? Tell me."

"Mom, dad..."

It was time she said something. It was time she revealed all about Michael Adams. Maybe they would be angry at her, maybe they would call her stupid for her irrational actions. But she was not in a state to analyze her actions anymore. Even with all the tension and stress, she needed answers. Answers she could not find herself.

She needed an explanation for her feelings about him.

Most importantly, she needed to know what he meant in her life.
