Mrs. Mathers watched from behind the counter as Brittney's retreating figure disappeared into the street which lead to the heart of the town.

She stood there for long; even when the girl had gotten completely out of sight. Then she came back and started cleaning the jars as usual.

The jars were always filled with candies and chocolates, no matter what occasion it was. Katherine had a special affection for the shop. Whenever she would think of closing it, she would look at those colorful candies, inhale the strong sweet smell, and start working again.

The ringing of the telephone after a while snapped her out of her thoughts and she rushed inside to pick it up. But it had already stopped.

She turned back and was about to leave when the phone rang again. This time she picked it up quickly.

"Hello," she said in an expressionless tone.

But she was definitely surprised. No one had called her in years.

"You hung up the call." He said in the same husky tone.

He was surprised too. No one had said those three words to him in years.

"You must be Brittney's friend. Honey, she's already left the store."

"Store..." he whispered. "Is this a store?"

"Yes. It is Katherine's confectionary, son. Actually her phone had gone dead, so..." She waited for his response, which didn't come.

"Why don't you call her when she gets home?"

"I..." He thought something for awhile.

Then, after a long pause, he said, "Can you give me her number?"
