Sam sat on the large, rocky overhang. His deep brown wings spread out on either side of him, soaking in the late afternoon sun. This was what he loved most about being an angel in charge of looking over the humans. Earth was so beautiful and alive, in ways that Heaven could never be.
A pair of hawks circled high in the air nearby, dark against the brilliant, blue sky.

He sighs, content. It was peaceful here, compared to the constantly turbulent Heaven. Where his fellow angel's were always fighting, as they had been since God had left all those Centuries ago.

"I though I would find you here." Another angel lands next to him, folding his large, deep black wings against his back. "What are you doing?"

Sam smiles, not looking away from the hawks. "Dean, done wrecking havoc across the world?" His brother, Dean, was already on thin ice after the whole dancing plague of 1518 thing. The older angel had had to spend 400 years in Heaven before returning to his Earthly duties. Sam vowed to never let him live it down.

"I had to help some kid out, had a whole freaking nest of Vampires chasing him down." Dean carefully sits down beside Sam, keeping his wings tucked away.

"You know you can't directly interfere with humans." Sam's brows crease, he gives his brother a worried glance. "You can't keep breaking the rules."

"Screw the rules." Dean throws a rock off the edge. "I couldn't let him die, he was just a kid."
"But what if-"
"It's always 'what if's' with you, are you seriously telling me that if you saw some poor kid in trouble, you wouldn't save him?"

Sam closes his eyes, "I don't want to have this argument again."

Dean was silent, but Sam could feel his judgmental gaze burning into the side of his head.
Finally, Dean breaks the silence. "There's a couple of Hunters in town."

This got Sam's attention. Hunters, those who hunted down creatures of evil and monsters who killed humans, were the most interesting humans to watch.

They lived such interesting lives, and he had guiltily spent many hours wondering what such a life would be like to live. Not that he would ever get the chance, he was an angel and he had duties, responsibilities. "Really?"

Dean hums, "The Novak's, the name's familiar but I don't know why."

Sam's looks up sharply. "The Novak's?" He knew why that name was familiar, the Novak's were the reason Lucifer was out of his cage.
"They're basically wanted for... everything, the younger brother, Castiel, was said to have spent some time in hell, but then some angel rescued him-"

"Do they know who?" Dean looked strangely concerned for a split second, but Sam brushes it off as worry for their angelic brother or sister. After all, flying down to hell was no easy business.

"No, but whoever it is would be in a lot of trouble, like I say, we shouldn't meddle directly with human lives." Sam fixes his brother with a pointed look. "And the oldest, Gabriel, has apparently killed Azazel and Alastair." Sam coughs, realizing that for a moment he had been... in awe? Shaking his head, he looks back down at the town far below. "Anyway, they've also killed three angels, so not the good guys."

"Maybe those angels deserved it." Dean mutters.
"Careful brother," Sam gives Dean a concerned look, "some might consider that treasonous." He doesn't know why he bothers to say that, Dean seemed destined to forever walk the thin line that lay between being a traitor and being loyal. "Just, stay away from the Novak's."

"And if I don't?"
Sam stands up, dusting his feathers off. "Be careful, Raphael and Michael look down on those more loyal to human than Heaven."

***

It was late at night when Sam finally dared to enter the town. Keeping his wings tucked away out of sight, he cautiously walks along the silent streets. He was looking for the demons that had been sighted in the area recently. Heaven had given him the highly important job of clearing them out, after getting wind that for some unknown reason, they were planning something that would end with the town wiped completely from the maps.

Dean was gone again, and knowing him he could be gone for a few hours, or a few years. Sam was tired of keeping track of his unruly brother.

His thoughts are interrupted as a loud noise comes from a nearby alleyway. Freezing, Sam holds himself still as he listens intently to the night air. A cat runs by, tail puffed up as it flees the source of the noise. Sam slowly reaches into his jacket, pulling his angel blade out.

Nothing else moved, and he slowly walks down the dark alleyway. If there was a demon here, it wouldn't be getting away from him tonight.

There! He grins as a dark shape shifts in the darkness. The demon had spotted him, his eyes impossibly black in the darkness, like two black holes where no light could escape. It turns to run, and Sam gives chase. There was no way that the demon could escape him now...

Someone tackled him from the side. Sam twists midair as they fall to the ground, and feels the sharp bite of metal against the base of his throat.

"Angel? or Demon?" The man asks, holding Sam down against the cold concrete. All the while, the demon had made its escape. Dammit.

"What..." Sam tries to think. The demon was long gone, he was failing in his mission, because of this human. "Let go of me." Sam was seriously tempted to smite this man, but to kill a human in cold blood would be betraying his promise to protect mankind.

"Not until you give me an answer." The man pressed the knife harder into Sam's neck, air stung against the bleeding cut. "What are you?"

A car passes the alleyway, and for a split second the headlights dimly illuminate the other man's face. Sam feels his heart drop. It was none other than Gabriel Novak. The angel killing brother. He could slit Sam's throat without a second thought.

"Let go of me, than maybe we can talk like civilized people." Sam turns his angel blade in his fingers, holding himself as still as he can as he weighs up his options. "Just... get that knife away from me." He can't help the cold anger that fills his voice. How dare this... human try to threaten him?

"Angel." Gabriel smirks, keeping the knife in place. "What's to keep me from killing you, feathers?" His glinting eyes told Sam that he would do it, and all it would take was a flick of his wrist.

Sam was angry, mostly at himself for letting this human get the jump on him. "Gabriel Novak, I've heard about you."
Gabriel's smirk widens. "Oh, I'm glad to hear it." He tilts his head. "Is that why you're here? Because let me tell you something, if you came here to kill me, you're doing a terrible job of it."

Sam rolls his eyes, "If I wanted you dead, I would have killed you by now."
"So why are you here then?" Gabriel keeps the knife pressed against his neck, hand steady.
Sam hesitates, Gabriel's knee was keeping his arm flush against the ground which was preventing him from using his angel blade. He considered calling Dean, but he doubted his brother would get here in time. There was nothing to do but tell the truth. "I'm looking for the demons."
Gabriel looks surprised. "You're hunting demons? I thought you guys just floated about with harps and whatnot, since when do you give two shits for mankind?"
Sam bites the inside of his cheek, struggling to keep his anger at bay. "We have looked over humans since the beginning of their kind."
Gabriel laughs, and it was strangely nice to listen to. "Right, so uh, where were you when humans were dying by the hundreds from plague? Or being slaughtered on the battlefield? Where are you, when humans all over the globe are suffering?"
"We can't directly interfe-"
"Oh please shut up, I can't be assed listening to your angelic prattling about your mission and rules, why are you suddenly so interested now?"
"The demons here threaten to wipe this entire town off the map, in a mad attempt to restart the apocalypse that you and your stupid brother almost set upon this planet."
Gabriel's eyes flash dark, but he makes no move to kill Sam. "Don't talk like that about my brother."
They stay like that for what felt like hours, glaring into each other's eyes.
It was Gabriel who broke the silence, the pressure on the blade against Sam's throat lessening. "Well shit." He closes his eyes for a moment, shaking his head. "I can't believe I'm about to say this, but it looks like we're both after the same thing here, ending those demons."
"So it seems."
"Look, I don't like you and I absolute loathe your kind, but maybe..." Gabriel looked as though he would rather stab himself than say another word. "Maybe we should work together, for this one case."
Work with a hunter? A Novak? That would be going against Sam's code of honour, not to speak of the fact that it meant he had to spend any amount of time in this particularly intolerable human's presence. Still, these demons were proving more powerful than he had anticipated, and the sooner he cleared it up, the sooner he could leave the Novak's behind.
"Fine."
Gabriel chuckles. "Aw, what's wrong, does working with hunters really ruffle those feathers of yours?"
Sam ignores him, moving his hand to his throat as the hunter stood up, blade still pointed at Sam. Using his grace to heal the cut, Sam slowly stands up, keeping an eye on Gabriel.
"No funny business, or I'll end you before you get the chance to even try calling out to your friends." Gabriel holds his stolen angel blade steadily, glaring at Sam.
"Maybe, if you don't mind, you could put that blade away. It doesn't do your talk of truce any good."
Gabriel sneers at him, but reluctantly stows the blade away in his green jacket. "You too."
Sam studies the hunter for a moment, running over all the possible ways that this could go wrong in his head. Finally, he sighs and slides his own blade back into his jacket.
"Remember, this is just to save this stinking town." Gabriel sticks his hand out.
"Sure." Sam reluctantly takes the hunter's hand, knowing that when this was over he would kill the hunter who had murder his brothers and sisters.

So, I have been going through my fics and planning out where I want to go with them given the fact that at the moment I'm finding it hard to feel enough inspiration to write.

First, welcome to a new fic! I know what you're thinking. "But Sophie, you already have fics on the go, why add another?"

I'll tell you why. Because I love to add more writing onto my work load.... jk, I've been writing this one on the side and really love it, although don't expect fast updates, this is just a side fic!

Second, All This Time will be temporarily on hold. Yup, I know, that long ass fic that I've been working on forever and still haven't finished, barely gets updated now and I have a good reason for that. I keep hitting a blank wall of writers block whenever I open that fic up, and its because I've let it get out of hand and race off in random directions. So, I will be working on that fic! By this, I mean that I will be working on a rewrite, get the fic back onto track and to a quality that I will feel happier about, then publish it again. So don't worry, you will be getting an ending to it, it's just gonna be a while off. I will, however, leave the current version up for now.

Lastly, with Then and Now, I am still writing that! I've just kinda been finding it hard to write lately, what with all my time being spent job hunting, but I'm trying to get a routine in place where I can be writing more instead of spending my nights binge watching Shane Dawson videos and vines.... I know, my life is great 😂

Anywayyyy, I should probably end this huge A/N here, thank you all so much for reading my fics! Never would I have thought that my fics would get reads, let alone all the amazing comments you guys leav
