CHANGING WORLDS
"Dimitri," I scream into the unending dark.
"Rose," his tone is hushed as he closes my mouth from behind.
"Something is wrong in here."
"Where did everybody go? How can the court be empty?" my voice is shaking.
"We'll get to the end of this," his eyes scanning the surroundings for immediate threats.
As we run through the empty courtyards and look at the ghostly towers at night, my gut is rolling with nausea. Something apocalyptic can only wipe the moroi court of its residents. The walls are covered with soot. Had there been a massive fire?
"Rose?" an unsure voice enquires from the dark.
"Sydney!"
She makes a dash for me, wrapping me in an embrace, "Rose, it's all over. We're doomed. They betrayed us."
I try my best to calm the terrified Sydney. Dimitri disappears into the dark and comes back with little Declan in his arms.
"Where are the others?"
"Taken away," she averts her eyes, "Our people, the alchemists betrayed them to the common humans and the 'Warriors of the Light' instigated the government and the army, who stormed the place, capturing every Moroi at court including the queen. I escaped being a human and they left the dhampirs too, but a lot many died to protect the Moroi. Their dead bodies were stacked in the underground cellars. The others escaped into the world."
"Adrian and Lissa...Christian."
"Gone."
"Eddie?"
She stays silent, pointing towards the cellars.
"No..."
My cry shatters the silence of the night.
I woke up, panting in bed, well aware that my chemise is drenched with sweat. A little sunlight was filtering through the blinds.
"Rose, it's another nightmare," Dimitri jumped onto my bed, wrapping me in his warm presence.
"When will it end? When shall we find them? That day haunts me still, Dimitri!" my voice choked.
There was a light knock on the door and Sydney came in to find me in a mess.
"Another nightmare. Eddie's death has shaken her the most. After losing Mason, he was like a brother to her," Dimitri shook his head.
"I can understand. But you still have Dimitri," she spoke in the mechanical way she was doing recently, no emotions.
"We're sorry about Adrian. We'll find him," I wiped my eyes, wondering if it really sounded so convincing.
She gave a dry smile and climbed onto my bed, opening her laptop, "I got the name of the person who has them up for show."
"What?"
"Yes and I think with a little effort and lots of money, you could actually get them to bring them here."
Money. That's another thing. When the moroi court had been wiped, Sydney had taken all data from guardian headquarters, which if gone into wrong hands could pose a threat to the safety of the moroi scattered all over the world. Already the frenzy of vampire discovery was drawing out vampire hunters to actively seek out moroi in other areas.
They are trapped in their own homes, fearing for their lives.
Sydney says it was probably for the best that we were away at Baia during the attack. We were the only couple who could do anything if it was possible. So we made a plan and hacked into our treasury and took out wads of cash.
We came to the city and mingled with the people. Living a life among the humans was tough and it was highly inconvenient, but we had to do it.
We disguised ourselves as movie producers and actually had to do one in the past two months to earn our fame which spread across the world.
And now we were on the last leg of the filming and that's where our master plan came in.
"Even if we bring them all here, where do we take them? No place is safe enough now that the humans know about our world," said Dimitri, pulling out his formal clothes from the array in the wardrobe. The inability to wear his duster was driving him crazy.
"I have a plan," she piped in.
"Though it requires lot of magic use and I don't know if I could actually keep up the spell long enough. It drains you physically as well as magically."
"Where exactly does the spell take you?"
"To another realm. We with human magic have many different realms from which we summon creatures, monsters to be precise. So if I could keep the portal open for a long time, we could actually take them there. I'm thinking of Pixietopia. It's the land of the fairies. Well there is evil magic there but that is a thing of later concern..."
"Fine, let's get to work then," I pushed myself off bed, going to my closet , ruffling through my ensemble of fashion good of some brands which I still couldn't get straight...Gucci...Ralph Lauren...Levi's...and what not.
"Mr. Oliver, I can't delay this any further," I tried to put on my most threatening face. "I need them latest by tomorrow."
"But ma'am, buying off the entire group of vampires isn't a great option. Mr. Darren would never agree to hand them over," he wet his lips nervously.
"I don't want them permanently, you fool," I retorted. "There is a five minute ball room sequence where the entire room needs to be filled by vampires in a party. And it's better to bring in real ones when we can have them, isn't it?"
"Umm, yes..."
"Then you're going to talk to Darren. I won't mind about money," Dimitri interrupted.
His serious stance was enough to make Oliver stutter.
"I can imagine the scene as our stars enter..." Sydney made a great show of being the director on site.
In a few minutes, Oliver came back to me grinning. The deal has been made. Darren is going to come with all the moroi they got. I prayed that Adrian, Lissa and Christian and Mia would be among them.
Something stuck my throat, "Eddie, I'll complete the mission you gave up your life for."
Sydney positioned herself before the ballroom, chanting the incantations and spreading out ingredients half of which I didn't recognize.
Just then they arrived, in five busses stacked with our people. They looked weak as they shuffled in and I tried my best to control my urge to dash Darren against the wall.
I busied him with sweet talk while the moroi were filed in into the room. Little did the others understand that Sydney was transporting them to another realm?
Adrian emerged, struggling and it took Sydney every amount of strength not to go, hug him.
He saw us and sensed something amiss but nevertheless followed the others.
There were around three hundred people.
"Where's the queen?" I demanded.
"She, with her vampire boyfriend she has been taken by the army along with some hundred others."
My heart lurched. Leaving them seemed like betrayal again.
"Rose," Sydney warned.
It was a signal that her magic was in its last throes.
"Dimitri, go supervise them," I called.
He came and entered the portal too, followed by Sydney.
I sighed, before jumping into the portal.
Mr. Darren was late to realise what had happened.
