Chapter 2: Courageous Choices

◀◌◌◜Happy Reading◝◌▶

◀▶◀▶◀▶◀▶◀▶◀▶◀▶◀▶

In a frenzied atmosphere of research and death, Amy became worried about the children in the shelters. She spends her time researching to develop innovations so that the children can carry out their activities like a child growing up. Her daily activities when she's not doing research projects are usually helping her grandfather or visiting children in orphanages.

For almost three years, her grandfather, a genius scientist, Dr. Ethan had stopped himself from completing his brilliant project. He wouldn't even allow Amy into his laboratory and only highly qualified people were allowed in to help him complete the project. 'Whatever grandpa does, hopefully he still thinks about his health' She began to worry about her grandfather's condition, remembering that he rarely had dinner with her because he was super busy and his body was getting thinner and thinner, plus the 95-year-old grandfather made her worry.

"Sister Amy! Sister Amy! Let's play!" exclaimed a very energetic little girl.

"Alright, alright..." said Amy in obedience to the little girl's invitation.

She was now at the orphanage located not far from her laboratory and home. Indeed, every afternoon she spent about 30 minutes or an hour spending time with the children. The caretaker of the orphanage is greatly helped by her visits.

Seeing the children's happiness makes her happy too. They are innocent children who have to feel the impact of this war. It's not fair that the world has to involve them.

⚠️🚨WARNING TO ALL RESIDENTS TO ENTER THEIR HOMES!!!🚨⚠️
⚠️🚨I REPEAT!!! WARNING TO ALL RESIDENTS TO ENTER THEIR HOMES!!!🚨⚠️

Amy's eyes bulged as it was unusual to have a warning like this. She immediately asked the orphanage children to enter the orphanage to hide. She and the caretaker, Mrs. Lesly, also locked all the doors with the security system that had been given to each building in the shelter. Amy also counted the orphanage children in case anyone was left behind. Fortunately, everything was complete and no one was left behind.

Seeing the frightened looks on the children's faces, she led them to a soundproof playroom that lowered the children's fear level. They decided to stay quiet and spend their time listening to a funny story. "Hiks... Hiks..." a cry came from one of the youngest boys.

"Oh, Jamarion... Huss, huss, huss. It's okay, it's okay, we're all here with you so you don't have to be afraid of feeling alone..." comforted Amy while holding Jamarion who was still crying.

"Hiks... Hiks... But, Sister Amy, when will this end? I'm scared... Hiks... And this is also why Mom and Dad are no longer together with me..." Jamarion said still crying, his tears breaking.

Jamarion's words hit Amy hard. It was like a tiny prick on our skin that caused an overwhelming sensation that we never knew we had. That was the emotion for her, 'I want to help but, with what' she wondered ahead.

Amy and Mrs. Lesly decided to lighten the mood by playing for a while and watching cartoons. As a result, the children of the orphanage fell for persuasion and seduction. Jemarion sat next to Ignacio who was the oldest child. They both hugged each other to calm each other down. Amy, too, tried to look through the window for a moment if she could.

Drrtt... Drrtt... Drrtt...

"Hello?"

"Yeah, geez, Amy, from the piece of shit on the phone not picking up... I'm worried you know" said the person calling her, her grandfather, Dr. Ethan.

"Hehehe, sorry, G-Pa. I was playing at the orphanage... Maybe I'll come back tomorrow?" feeling guilty for making his grandfather worry. "Is it safe yet Grandpa?" he continued.

"Hm, not yet. There are still some militaries trying to distract the attention of the aliens. I think they know the shelter is here."

"Shit. It could be bad, then"

"Language. Yes, this could be serious. So don't leave the orphanage yet and tell Lesly's mom, too... Be careful there."

"Yes, Grandpa."

My phone screen went dead as I heard that things were still not okay. Amy relayed the message to Lesly's mom and became frantic about the condition of the children in the orphanage. Some children already felt that their lives were short and causing mental damage to them. "Oh, Amy... I don't know what else to do," said Mrs. Lesly a few weeks ago, which made her want to do something about it.

The laboratory was full of world leaders arguing with each other. Dr. Ethan, who was in the middle of the room, was rubbing his temples feeling dizzy from the endless arguments. Amy who was standing in the corner along with several employees just stared at the argument.

"Please, lady and gentleman... Please sit down" Dr. Ethan's rather loud voice got everyone's attention.

"All right, as I have explained from the beginning. I built the time travel machine to find out what it takes to defeat the aliens. Therefore, I created this machine" Dr. Ethan explained at length, Amy who heard her grandfather's words just rounded her eyes not knowing what to say. 'Geez, Grandpa did such a great innovation' Amy marveled.

The world leaders were amazed to hear Dr. Ethan's explanation, they felt that this technology could win the war. Their eyes all sparkled - this opportunity would not come twice. In unison, they said yes.

"Sorry, Dr. Ethan, the time travel machine..." said one of the assistant doctors on the project team for the time travel machine.

"Huh? What's wrong? Is the machine not working?" he asked, not wanting his three years of work to go to waste.

"No, it's..." the physician's assistant whispered something that took her a little by surprise.

From a distance, Amy sensed something strange. Was the time travel machine broken? Or, did something happen? She didn't know why now but her grandfather looked at her regretfully.

"Well, today's meeting is over. So-...."

"Wait a minute! What about who can enter this time travel machine? Do we have to provide military volunteers or what?" asked one of the world leaders.

"Ah, there's no need for that, I've already prepared the volunteers myself and before you refute the machine, she or he is the only one who can use the machine. So, whoever is sent doesn't need to protest."

'Hm!? Grandpa already has a volunteer!? Who could it be?' Amy wondered. She decided to meet with her grandfather to ask him about his newly released innovation project. Her grandfather had told her nothing about this project.

As she entered the lab room, she saw her grandfather's pale and upset face. He sensed that something was about to happen. "Grandpa" he greeted.

"Hm? Ah, my granddaughter... What is it? Is there something you want?" his grandfather asked back.

"No, I don't. I was just wondering why you didn't tell me about your latest project..."

"Oh, I see... I'm sorry, but I wanted to be able to finish this project without telling you...," said Dr. Ethan feeling guilty. "Ah, that's right... I wanted to ask you something."

Suddenly Amy was led to her grandfather's study. Her grandfather sat her down on a sofa so they could have a one-on-one conversation. Her heart was suddenly nervous, not knowing what her grandfather wanted to say to her.

"So, you know, if the time travel machine is finished and I've found a volunteer..." Dr. Ethan said to Amy who nodded her head in reply. "So, to use the machine only one person must be related to me" continued his explanation again.

"Huh? Blood relationship?" repeated Amy in confusion.

Dr. Ethan sighed heavily knowing that it would be a long explanation. "Yes, blood related. The machine got a glitch that made it have to receive my blood, well... the result is like this" Dr. Ethan explained again.

"Wait... Hold on! If it involves blood then the only thing that can enter this machine is..."

"Yup. Only you can do the time travel... But, if you don't want to, I'm not forcing you, I can fix the machine from the error."

The explanation given by Dr. Ethan made her shocked. Not because he knew that this would cause a change in his life, 'I'm sure grandpa doesn't want me to go at all, but on the one hand, I want to contribute directly to this project' his mind was at war.

"Grandpa if you want me to answer honestly, I'd love to help stop the war... I'm sick and tired of seeing you work from morning till morning again forgetting about your health, especially since you're not young anymore. I also want to see the orphanage children cheerful again, they got scared when there was a warning of aliens approaching about two days ago, even some of them have given up on their lives..." Amy said pouring out her heart to her grandfather.

Dr. Ethan just smiled as he knew that his granddaughter would be a kind-hearted person and would change the world through her actions. "Alright, if you agree. We'll start preparations tomorrow..." he said as he held his granddaughter Amy's hand tightly.

"Okay."

By Dr. Ethan's mandate and orders, Amy immediately went through a series of tests for safety in using the time travel machine. The team from the machine-building project also provided information on things that would happen and how to anticipate them. She was told that the time of this time machine was limited so she had to go back again from a predetermined time.

Amy knew that she was just the granddaughter of a great scientist and that many people doubted her abilities. However, she was eager to do it and find out where the trouble spots were. She planned to make sure the project ran smoothly. 'Hopefully this will work' she thought as she looked at some of the plans she had for the future.
