Unit 21: Frenemies

After Rogue spoke the word "syllys," we were put into a trance. Like before, it was hard to control, but this time I had to. If I didn't, then the group of people from the camp, the pack, would be hurt...or killed; I didn't know what the outcome would be.

The weapon was different now. First, it was the "Light Cross-Cannons", but now it's a duel scythe. Yes, we had two scythes each. As if one wasn't dangerous enough. But at a time like this, more weapons was the way to go...if it can be dealt with.

Rogue checked in with me telepathically, 'Amus? Are you good there?'

'Yeah,' I replied, making sure that I had control. '...I'm fine.'

We stood back to back and I couldn't help but grin. I felt superior to the rest of the people here except for Rogue. My movements weren't entirely under control, but I was able to stop myself from attacking the good guys. And that was good enough for me.

I started towards the scientist-puppeteer whereas Rogue stayed in her place. The woman spoke, but to me she was inaudible. Her mouth moved along to the sound of nothing. But when I think about it, she wasn't the only thing I couldn't hear. The whole world around me was silent.

What about that time Allois stopped us from killing Echo? What about that time when I heard Rogue talk to me through telepathy? Through telepathy... When I use the power of syllys, I could only hear what is in my mind. I'm also able to hear my weapon. So, all in all, I can't hear the enemy beg for mercy. I can't hear the sobs or cries that choke them up. I can't hear them explain themselves. I could only hear myself and my partner in crime.

I'm just like a cold-blooded murderer. But that's fine. They wouldn't hold back. Why should I?

Both of my scythes were held tightly in my hands. The handles were at my sides and the blades dragged across the ground with every step I took. They rose into the air once I stood infront of the woman. She was scooting herself backwards and I'm pretty sure she was yelling, but then again, I couldn't hear it. Her eyes showed all her fear hidden deep inside her. Can I really do this? Kill someone on purpose? No.

My arms swung the scythes from both sides. Stop, I told myself. Stop. The blades cut through the air and the metal scraped her shoulder, but it stopped. I took control and led myself to sanity. A bit of red dripped out from the fabric of her shirt where it cut her.

"Why?" she whispered. "Why didn't you kill me?"

Why? I don't know. I still replied, "I will do my best to make it through life without causing any more deaths. I'm not low enough to make myself stoop down to your level."

Rogue recognized my act and dropped her weapons. Mine disappeared straight out of my hand and I slipped on my glove. Turning my head, I smiled at Rogue as she whistled for Devae (which came bounding down the hill-side toward us).

"Let's go," she said, grinning.

I nodded, but before I left, I pinned Miss Puppeteer against a tree by her hands. "Don't mess with the pack, okay?"

"What are you talking about?" she asked nervously.

As if on cue, the people from the camp appeared from the trees, each bearing a hostage. I raised an eyebrow at her and she nodded her head vigorously. These people really are weak.

Lite, Zoelle, Echo, and Cartis made their way over to us and we met Al and Sannel at the bottom of the mountain. Crap! Sannel!  I forgot that I kissed Rogue...

"Hey!" they greeted us.

"...Hi..!" I said, hesitating.

"Well," Sannel said, opening the door of his van, "come in!"

We all managed to fit ourselves in the car as he drove off to my house. There's no doubt that our parents (except for Cartis) are worried. I sat on the passenger's seat next to Sannel and everyone else was in the back. Honestly, I was beat. This weekend had been the craziest I've ever had. So, I tiredly watched out the window as the different  sceneries flashed before my eyes.

"Hey, Amus?" Sannel called to me.

"Yeah? What is it?"

"Do... Do you like Rogue?"

Ugh. There go my hopes for a calm ride to my house. I can't lie to him, but it would crush him if I told him the truth...or he'd take it lightly. But he'd be even angrier if he found out that I had lied to him...so, I came clean. "Yes," I replied. "I do."

I turned to see his facial reaction, but he stayed quiet, looked calm, and slowly nodded his head up and down. "Okay," he said finally. "I can live with that... You're my friend. You stayed nice to me even though you knew that I liked her." He smiled and smirked at me for a second. "That doesn't mean I'm giving up on her. You're my 'frenemy'."

I grinned and turned back to the window. "You're on."

He pulled up on my driveway and we left the van. "Bye, guys. See you soon at school... and don't worry; I won't tell anyone about the whole...Morphix thing."

We all thanked him as Lite, Zoelle, Cartis, Echo, Devae, and Rogue left. Allois and I walked up our steps and rang the doorbell. In an instant, the door swung open and Mom came running outside, greeting us at first glance with a warm embrace. When she pulled herself away, my sleepy eyes met her bloodshot ones.

"Where were you two? What happened?"

I tried to choose the right words. "We were...on...a...Morphix mission?"

"'A Morphix mission'? For so long?!"

"Don't worry, Mom, we're fine. It's all okay for now."

Whoops. Wrong choice of words.

"'For now'?! That's it," she said. Uh-oh... "No more missions." Shit... "No more Morphix."
