Unit 17: Friends and Crutches

Sannel sat on a log and I rested beside him. He ate a curry-bun happily as the other people watched intently.

"So," he said, swallowing, "who are these people."

I looked at the others. Since I lost my memory, I didn't know the answer to the question either.

"I'm not too sure," I replied truthfully.

He nodded at sipped from a soda can. "Oh, Amus. You're so reassuring," he mumbled sarcastically. "You didn't go to school yesterday or pick up your phone. I was worried."

The only thought that kept pacing back and forth in my mind was 'Please don't see Rogue, Sannel! Don't look for her, Zoelle, and Lite here because I don't want you to be pissed off at me for no reason!'

I let out a strained chuckle and hoped he didn't notice, but that's a stupid thing to hope because best friends are supposed to know when your laughs are fake.

"Are you okay?" he asked.

Crap.

"Yeah... I'm fine. I'm just...thinking." I'm dead. Why did I say I was thinking? Oh, I'm so stupid.

"What are you thinking about?" he inquired.

"Ugh..." My eyes darted around. "M-my leg! I was thinking about my leg. I got hurt and that's why I'm here!" My voice seemed a bit anxious.

"Oh. What happened to your leg?"

STOP ASKING ME ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS!

I can't answer that because I don't remember, but I can't lie to him either. If I say that I don't remember then he'll get suspicious and ask even more. Since I can't lie so well to his face, then I'll end up talking about Morphix. Then Rogue will come up and he'll feel betrayed. Either that or he'll think I'm crazy.

I looked away from him. "I...uh..."

"Hello?" it was Rogue's voice. She appeared from behind a couple of trees.

"Rogue?!" Sannel practically yelled, "What are you doing here?!"

She raised an eyebrow. "I could say the same about all of you."

It took me a second for me to realize what she had done. She had saved me.

She knew that I couldn't talk about my leg so she came in pretending as if she was lost too.

Sannel blushed a bright red. "O-oh. Sorry. I just-"

Rogue laughed. "I'm just kidding. Don't worry." She made her way closer to us and nodded her head to the other people. "I was camping by myself and I got lost."

"Really?!" Sannel seemed completely overjoyed. "I come camping here every year because it's free! But... that's not the reason why I'm here right now..."

Rogue giggled and I played along.

According to the lies I've told Sannel, I'm here with Allois because we got bored and decided to go on an 'adventure', I hurt my leg by falling off a tree and landing on a spikey branch, these people came to save me, and I stayed the night in order to heal.

"So," I said, slouching in my seat, "what brought you here, Sannel?"

He looked at me and blinked a few times. Some blinks were longer than the others. I stared at him for a second and finally realized what he was doing. Morse Code.

He started, "•• •-• •- -• •- •-- •- -•-- (I ran away.)"

I replied, "•-- •••• -•-- - •••• • •••• • •-•• •-•• •- •-• • •-- • ••- ••• •• -• --• -- --- •-• ••• • -•-• --- -•• • (Why the hell are we using Morse Code?)"

"•-• --- --• ••- • •• ••• •••• • •-• • •- -• -•• •• ••-• • • •-•• • -- -••• •- •-• •-• •- ••• ••• • -•• (Rogue is here and I feel embarrassed.)"

I sighed heavily and continued blinking, "•-• --- --• ••- • •• ••• ••• - •- •-• •• -• --• •- - ••- ••• •- ••• •• ••-• •-- • •- •-• • •-•• ••- -• - •• -•-• ••• (Rogue is looking at us as if we are lunatics.)"

It was true. She stared at us with an inquisitive look and forced smile.

Sannel saw the look on her face and turned bright red.

I leaned over to him and looked him in the eyes. My position looked as if I were whispering, but my voice was loud enough for everyone to hear. "You look like a tomato."

He chuckled lightly, but he gave me a face that said 'I will seriously kill you and make it look like it was a bloody accident'.

I smirked.

Rogue exaggerated an inhale. "So... What's going on?"

Sannel cracked his knuckles. "I was just thinking that I could help you guys out and maybe help you find your campsite or get Amus and Allois home...yeah..."

I folded my hands together and raised an eyebrow. "You were, huh?"

He looked at me with defensively wide eyes. "Yes. I was," he said through gritted teeth.

Rogue laughed and stood up. "Okay. Let's go."

What the heck, Rogue? Okay, he wants to help her look for her campsite, but she doesn't have a campsite. However, she chose to go along with his plan to look for it. Why?

I decided to ask her - telepathically, of course.

'What are you doing? You don't have a campsite! Plus, I don't want to walk around everywhere with my leg like this.'

'Calm down... I had this all planned out.'

She smiled at me and turned. "Um... Sannel?"

"Yes?" His face lit up at the mention of his name.

"Actually, all of my things are packed up and hidden in a tree."

I look at her with surprise. Real surprise; I wasn't faking it. "What? Why are your supplies in a tree?"

"Just in case people come over and try to take some things."

Sannel looked at me and back at Rogue. "I think that's really smart of you!"

Rogue gave a small smile and nodded.

I looked at Sannel and blinked a couple of times. "-• --- --- -• • •-•• •• -•- • ••• •- ••• - ••- -•-• -•- ••- (No one likes a stuck-up.)"

Sannel scowled at me and we ended up walking (except for me; I limped) to the tree where Rogue 'hid her things'.

"Hmm..." She stared up at the giant pine tree. Turning to me, she placed her hand on my shoulder. "Give me a leg-up."

My eyebrows furrowed. "Rogue, seriously? I'm holding a cane and my leg's jacked up, but you still want me to give you a 'leg-up'?"

She looked me up and down. "Oh yeah..."

Turning her head, she found a nearby tree. She kicked herself upwards from the trunk to boost herself towards the branch.

This entire time, I knew that Sannel felt rejected. He stood on the side and just watched as Rogue ignored his ability to help.

She grabbed onto the tree branch and swung herself on top, disappearing into the thick mass of leaves.

For a couple of seconds, all we heard was the rustling in the tree. Besides that, it felt nice to listen to the faint sounds of nature. Even though I might end up itching from the many mosquito bites I may have obtained.

She called down to us, "Catch!"

To my surprise, she actually had supplies up in there. Sannel caught it due to my inability to really move around.

A twig snapped and Rogue came falling out of the tree, but she landed fine.

When she stood up straight, I saw the look on her face. The usual expression that suggested that she was entertained came to be replaced by one filled with fright.

Speaking clearly but softly, she looked away from us. "We have to go. Now."

Sannel clung onto the supplies tightly. "Why?" His voice sounded confused and scared. "Why and where are we going?"

Rogue grabbed her things from Sannel and strapped them around her back. "We're going anywhere else but here. And the reason for that...I can't tell you."

She started speeding down the forest trail with Sannel following closely behind. And then there's me. I hobbled along, trying to keep up with their quick paces.

Luckily for me, Sannel has red hair. And when I say red hair I mean red. Scarlet red. It used to be a light brown, but he said that he wanted people to see him.

Sannel, Krone, and me. We all went through some sort of phase in the past.

Anyways, here I was, keeping my eyes on the slowly-fading flame on his head.

"Come on!" they kept saying. They needed to take the fact that I'm crippled into consideration.

"Wait," I hissed.

Soon, the head was gone and I could no longer see, smell, or even hear them. I ceased my movements.

Heavy steps began coming towards me. What or who were we running from? They started getting louder, the cruching of leaves echoed in my mind.

I thought about Allois, Echo, Lite, and Zoelle.

What were they doing now? Are they safe? Running? Dead?

The noise came closer. Little by little, it etched into my mind; the sound behind me.

It stopped.

Turning around, I stared into a pair of grey eyes. Cartis.

He raised an eyebrow. "Amus?"

"Hey, Cartis."

A grin plastered onto his face. No, it wasn't a grin; it was a smirk.

He picked me up and slung me over his shoulder.

I pounded my fists at his back and kicked him with my good leg. "What are you doing? Let me down!"

He pressed his fingers roughly into my injured leg, making me wince. "Be quiet!" he demanded.

Cartis walked in the opposite direction from Sannel and Rogue. I gritted my teeth and cursed under my breath.

He contued walking, digging his fingers into the wounds on my leg.

He sighed and spoke calmly. "Don't shoot the messanger."
