As I walked through the beautiful garden, all I could think was how none of these flowers could match up to the precious flower I was about to see. A flower so beautiful…yet out of reach…

The deep affection I feel for her can't be explained by words of friendship.

I shake off the thoughts roaming around my head and enter the gazebo. I bow politely and look up at her,

“Greetings, Lady Li. I hope my visit isn’t a bother.”

She looks up from the book she was reading and beams. The way her eyes twinkle under the sunlight is mesmerising.

“Greetings, Lady Lin. It's always a pleasure to see you,” she says gleefully.

“So what are you reading?” I ask her to initiate a conversation.

“I found this book in the library. It has some love poems. The more I read, the more enchanted I become. I wonder if I'll ever experience love,” she says thoughtfully while admiring some flowers.

I couldn't help but ask, “My Lady, what do you think love feels like?”

She looks up at the blue sky. She looks almost angelic as her hair frames her delicate face.

“Love…it comes in various shapes and forms. I've experienced familial and affectionate love, but I have yet to experience what romantic love feels like. From the way people speak of it, it sounds exquisite,” she replies thoughtfully.

Our chatter continues after that. As the sun starts setting, I decide to end our meeting for the day.

“It's getting late, I should return home now,” I can't control the bright smile that illuminates my face whenever I'm near her.

She takes my hand as we get up, her touch is light as a feather as she gives my hand a gentle squeeze.

“Do visit me again. I'll be waiting for you,” she bids me farewell with those sweet words.

My heart beats fast as I mount my carriage. I close my eyes and think about every little gesture from her. The emotions I feel for her are not like the ones I feel for my other friends.

The carriage stops in front of the gate of our mansion. I return to my room and ask my lady in waiting to help me change out of my outdoor clothing.

After changing into more comfortable clothes, I sit before the mirror as she starts brushing my hair. I notice that she's smiling slyly.

“Why are you smiling?” I ask her out of curiosity.

She giggles mischievously, “Well my Lady, don't act so shy anymore. Everyone's been talking about how you visit the Li household. You must be into General Li huh?”

“What gave you that idea?” I ask in confusion.

“Isn't it true? You've been visiting Lady Li much more frequently ever since the General returned from the battlefield. So I thought you might be into him. General Li is one of the most eligible bachelors in the capital.”

“I have no interest in being with General Li,” I mumble curtly.

“I suppose we just looked too deep into it. I apologise for assuming, my Lady,” she replies hastily and bows.

“I would like to ask you a question.”

“What is it, my Lady?” She looks up at me expectantly.

“What do you think of love? How does it feel when someone's in love?” I ask as I play with the hem of my dress.

“Love is an unexplainable warm feeling. When you're in love, you feel safe and happy in the presence of your lover. I remember the days when my husband courted me. Each letter from him would make my heart flutter and make me grin like a fool,” I notice her smile as she reminisces about their joyful time.

“Does love feel so good?” I inquire further.

“It's the most beautiful feeling one could experience. To be able to share your joy and sorrow with someone is truly a blessing,” she replies softly as she focuses on finishing brushing my hair.

The rest of the evening goes by a breeze and the night rolls around. I begin thinking about all that happened today. Hui’s words keep replaying in my head.

“Love is an unexplainable warm feeling…” I mumble, getting lost in my thoughts.

The warmth and happiness I feel around Lady Li…
