"Shreya, we have to think. We only have half a week to decide before your first trimester ends. I don't want any problems with you because of it." Veer reasoned while on a call with her.
"We'll talk about it once I reach. I am about to reach your office." She said stopping the car at red light.
"No! Don't hang up. We'll talk the throughout." He butted in making Shreya blush.
Veer had called her to his office to discuss some things. Shreya's office where she works in the HR department isn't that far and having the conversation in Veer's office which in his own building is more apt than having where Shreya works as an employee.
As the traffic light turned to green, she ignited the engine again and pressed onto the pedal of acceleration.
"Veer, I had approached a different doctor with our case. He said there are chances of me surviving-" She said, not being able to hide the new news anymore.
"Shreya don't. We don't need to think about it unnecessarily. " He said cutting her off, displaying a stern voice.
"But Veer, I am helpless. This is the only thing that rotates in my mind. I don't know what to do because of this." She croaked out with difficulty.
"We'll go through everything together baby." Veer breathed out.
"Baby? That's so cheesy. But anyways..." She laughed at his grumpiness.
Driving up in a normal speed, she was crossing the four way, her eyes fixated ahead and what she didn't notice was a truck coming directly in her direction with the highest of speed.
And BAM!
It directly crashed onto hers which made the impact of her car being flipped.
Scattering of mirrors, metals and screams were the only sounds heard and now her car was upside down with the other car basically pushed inside hers.
"Shreya? What was that? Are you okay?" Came Veer's shouts from the other side of call.
"Veer..." Was her almost inaudible whisper before darkness surrounded her.
"Shreya!?" He shouted from the other side, but didn't get any response.
He could tell what happened on the other side, but it was like he didn't want to believe it. But at the end it did and no one could change it.
And in a flash, he was out of his office, running towards the route he knew she takes to come at his office.
Who knew it was only to witness the horror sight in front of him which he never wanted to happen.
Blood.
Broken mirrors.
Her screams of pain which slowly subsided only for him to drown in a pool of tears.
//////////
Beep
Beep
A drowsy Shreya woke up after hearing the continuous beeps. She could feel her head pounding and limbs badly aching, but she was used to these random pains which she never opened up about.
Sniff
Sniff
And it was followed by another sound in those irritating beeps.
"Veer?" She whispered in a hoarse voice, looking at him who had his head placed on the space beside her on the bed she was laying on.
His hand was clutched onto hers in a death grip and she huffed dramatically noticing it.
"Shreya? You woke up?" He exclaimed cupping her cheeks.
"Of course I did idiot. An accident can cause basically nothing to me." She tried to smile, which didn't even reach her own eyes.
And Veer's heart clenched.
"S-Shreya-" He gulped down the lump in his throat.
"Why did you let them attach the IV drip on me Veer? Don't you know I am scared of them?" She complained, trying not to look at the horrific sight on her hand as she took the notice of her surroundings.
"I did! I even fought with the doctor because of this. But he said it's necessary for you and for-" He couldn't complete his sentence when a loud hiss came out of Shreya's mouth.
"What happened Shreya? Is it paining?" He rambled worriedly.
"Veer, the IV. It feels like it's tearing my skin apart." She whispered hoarsely and eyes glistened with unshed tears.
The door of the private room bursted open and a doctor stepped in.
"I see you're awake Mrs. Shekhawat. How are you feeling?" The doctor asked, checking the heart monitor that was beeping beside her bed.
"I am okay. A little pain in the head though." She croaked out and Veer gave her a broken smile.
"You're lucky that the glass pieces didn't bruise your head. You got minor concussion because you were using the seatbelt and airbags helped a lot. But still, we have to worry about your recovery. You need to be a lot careful because of your miscar-"
"Veer." Came her painful whine in between.
"What happened Shreya? Is your head paining?" He asked, super concerned.
"IV again." She cried.
"I am sending the nurse to check your vitals and change the IV." The doctor nodded, and Veer nodded back.
//////////
"No! Veer! Tell her not to do this." Shreya cried.
"Shreya-"
"Don't Shreya me. You know I hate needles." She sobbed.
"Shreya, here. Look at my eyes." He said softly, cupping her cheeks.
"Veer. Atleast support me once." She sobbed looking at him accusingly.
"I feel so light. As if I don't have anything inside me. As if my body isn't functioning. Then how will I survive the pain and shock of needle?" She said burying her face in his chest.
And Veer's heart clenched at her statement.
Indeed she's able to feel everything. Even the misca-
"Sir, please hold her. We need to attach the IV as soon as possible." The nurse said impatiently and Veer sighed while Shreya gave her a deadly glare.
"You know, I'll hold you and you won't even realize the pain." He said sitting beside her on the hospital bed.
"How can you be sure?" She asked skeptically.
"I just am." He declared and seated themselves in a way that his back was touching the bed's headboard with Shreya's back touching his chest as she was placed like a small baby between his legs with a frustrated pout.
"Veer, is my bab-"
"Ouch! Ouchie! Oops! Oh gosh, it's so painful. This IV is so bad! Bad just like Veer Shekhawat." She cried and Veer looked at her in bewilderment.
"What are you even saying? I thought you've come out of your weirdo version, but no, I was so wrong." Veer said dramatically, trying to make her forget about the pain.
"I was never in my 'weirdo version', okay? You just looked at me with a different perspective at that time. And I have no idea how that changed." She replied looking at him sideways.
"Didn't your perspective about me change as well?" He smirked this time.
"You're lucky it did." She chuckled.
"Mrs. Shekhawat, here's the medicine for your pain." The nurse said forwarding a tray of medications.
"Painkillers? I cannot take those. Specially any random medicine as I am pregnant." Shreya shook her head.
"Ma'am, you had an misc-"
"Wait!"
It was Veer who stopped the nurse right there.
"We'll talk with the doctor about the medications and all. Now, we would prefer some privacy." Veer said, in a stern voice making Shreya roll her eyes.
And soon it was only Veer and Shreya in one of the private room of hospital. They were still sitting in a manner with Shreya's back touching his chest as she was situated between his legs.
"Veer, why is there a massive plaster on my leg?" She asked, with a big pout.
"You had a fracture Shreya. It'll take a couple of months to heal." He sighed, rubbing her arm in comforting circles.
"But who the hell wrote bitch on this?" She cried.
"Your handsome and dashing husband." He smirked.
"I'll take a revenge." She glared.
And soon she had found interest in playing with the buttons of his shirt, while his mind was flipping its insides, wondering what'll happen once Shreya gets to know about the bitter reality.
"Shreya, I have to tell you something important." He said after moments of silence.
"You're strong right? This accident can never make an impact on your life right? Accidents happen and we lose things." He said with difficulty.
"What are you trying to say? I am not worried or tensed about the accident. It was my fate. The only thing I am tensed about is our baby. It's fine right? Everything is fine right?" She asked hopefully.
"S-Shreya- the b-baby....we actually l-lost it. You had a m-misc-arriage." He croaked out with difficulty.
And no words came out of Shreya's mouth.
She was frozen on the spot, her hand digging on his forearm, nails creating bruises on his strong arm yet he didn't stop her.
He was looking at her intently for any reaction where she was busy sitting like a statue, without blinking her eyes even once.
It felt as if the world had stopped for her.
"Home....."
After moments of pin drop silence, a word finally came out of her mouth.
"Shr-"
"Home." She repeated.
"But-"
"Home!" Her voice was comparatively high.
"Baby please-"
"TAKE ME HOME RIGHT NOW!" She shouted on top of her lungs.
Veer's hand reached out for her on its own for her to cradle, but no matter how much he was trying, she kept on thrashing in his arms, shouting continuously to take her home.
Her red eyes, glistening with tears were settled on Veer, silently pleading him at the same time yet she didn't listen to him when he was trying to calm and soothe her with his words.
But this time, even Veer couldn't control her.
It was such a situation.
The doctors and staff finally came running inside their room due to the commotion and in a situation like this, they could only take the reflex action of putting Shreya forcefully on anesthesia.
And the whole time when the nurses kept her in their hold forcefully for the doctor to inject her with it, by the one thing she's scared of, needles, she kept gazing at Veer with red and teary eyes who was looking back at her with the same red and teary eyes as this time, he himself was helpless.
//////////
There are times when you can do something to lower or remove the pain you're feeling from inside. There are times you can undo your actions for the pain you felt because of it. There are times you can cover up your pain by different measures.
But for Shreya and Veer, they didn't know how to remove pain they were feeling. The accident wasn't something that could be undone. Shreya's miscarriage wasn't something that could be undone.
And that's what pierced Veer's heart.
Is this how you feel abandoned in your life?
As if you've lost everything?
Her teary faced haunted him the whole time when he was busy making arrangements for Shreya's comfort.
Currently sitting beside her laying form on the bed, he was caressing her hair and face from time to time while kissing her forehead every now and then.
It had been almost 15 hours straight that Shreya hadn't woken up after the anesthesia dose. Doctor's said, the delay was because of her exhaustion and pain, but Veer was restless to see her awake and talk to her.
"Ahem...Ahem..."
A hoarse cough brought him out of his trance, and as soon as he noticed Shreya trying to settle with the light's exposure, a big smile reached up on his face.
"Shreya..." He said in a low voice, helping her to sit straight on the bed.
Her eyes wandered to her surroundings. This was only to notice that she wasn't in the hospital or laying on the hospital bed. It was her home. Veer's penthouse.
And then her eyes landed on Veer who was looking at her, trying his hardest to keep his emotions at bay. Only for her.
"Veer..." A sudden cry came out of her mouth and she launched herself to him, wrapping her arms around his torso and her legs and body curled up in his lap, not caring about the multiple wires and bandages.
"Tell me you don't hate me Veer. I am sorry for what happened, but please don't say you hate me because of that. I- I"
He cut her blabbering off right there.
"What are you even saying Shreya? Why would I hate you?" He asked looking at her in bewilderment while she was busy shedding tears, not caring about the fact of her current condition.
"Everything happened because of me. I was the one driving-"
"Stop this nonsense Shreya! I have already had a meeting with the police and they've found out that the truck driver was the one who came on the wrong side. It was him who was drunk while you were driving absolutely fine." He stopped her from saying anything nonsense that would only ruin his mood.
"I lost my child Veer. We lost it before we could even get a chance to hold it." She sobbed, whimpers coming out of her mouth that she even had to place her hand on her mouth for control.
"Shreya, look at the positive side. You're alive. I know we lost our baby. We lost a precious piece of our heart, but just think that atleast you came out of it. Just tell me, how would I have felt knowing I don't have anyone in my life? Abandoned right? I am looking at the positive side since the day it happened and you need to do the same. For you and for me." He ended with a finality in his words.
"Why do I think that you are being selfish Veer? Not for once you said anything about losing the baby-"
"I am selfish. If caring about you and loving you makes me selfish, then I don't have any problem in being one." The words rolled off his tongue without any resistance.
Shreya was frozen on the spot. She didn't know how to react in a situation like this. While she was curled up in his lap, she wanted to stay there forever and feel his warmth. She wanted to kiss the daylights out of him and express her compassion and love towards him. But all she could do was stare at him with her mouth agape.
Has he always been this merciless?
"I am sending in the nurse I appointed for you. I suggest you take proper care and rest. I am right outside and call me if you need anything." While saying this emotionlessly, he walked out of their bedroom leaving a crying Shreya behind who just felt helpless.
She just didn't know what to feel or what to express. Why wasn't she feeling angry at Veer for whatever he said? Was it because she somewhere knew it wasn't her fault? Was it because she knew someday this was bound to happen? Had she already accepted that there was slight chances of losing her baby? Was she ready for a situation like this?
Maybe she was.
But is she ready to tell him the same?
That's something she doesn't knows.
//////////
It had been more than 6 hours that Shreya had seen Veer. She was laying down on the support of bedpost although her wires and everything had been removed. All she needed was to rest and take proper care of her concussion and fracture.
Was was Veer angry in the first place?
Why hasn't he come to meet her even once?
It was currently 12 in the midnight and all Shreya could ponder upon was her loneliness. She wanted to cry at her condition, but no tears were ready to come out of her eyes.
She knew she was craving his presence.
She knew she cared for him. She wanted to know whether he has even eaten the whole day or not. She wanted to look at his condition, forgetting about her own. She wanted him to be perfectly fine.
She'd straightaway denied to the both set of parents to come and visit them, or for Veer and Shreya to go and live at theirs.
But, both of the mothers didn't forget to give her a piece of advice. Some lines that created a huge impact on her thinking process and her heart.
Sometimes, things doesn't go the way you want. And that's not your fault. You may have had that little bundle of joy for a little time, but it has a place in your heart forever. Don't feel disheartened that you've lost your baby, because in return what you've got is an angel. An angel that'll protect his/her parents forever, from up above the starry sky.
Was something she listened and connected onto, her two mother had spoken.
But why did it happen with her? That was something she kept thinking.
Why can't Veer support and care for me in such a situation?
When she shouldn't be all alone, then why can't Veer understand this?
And without wasting any other second, she removed the blanket off her body and proceeded to go out of their bedroom.
The other two bedroom's door were completely closed as she got outside. She knew they weren't even furnished so there was no chance of Veer being inside of them.
The worst fact was that there was almost no souce of light here which made it difficult for her to walk with the plaster in her left leg. The only way she could see at things was because of the light coming out of their bedroom, due to the door being left open and the minimal of moonlight coming through the big windows of this penthouse.
She was randomly walking in the lobby, clutching her stomach unknowingly which she'd made the habit of in these few days.
But there was no one to remind her about the bitter reality.
Her eyes then landed on a sitting figure, of the biggest open balcony of this penthouse that enables them to look at the city clearly.
It was Veer who was sitting.
His eyes were fixated ahead of the city's view as she could only gaze at his back figure in the absolute darkness.
Unknowingly, her eyes were filled with fresh tears that were begging to escape.
He was sitting on the floor, ignoring the multiple chairs that were kept in the balcony.
As she got near to him, she came to know that he hadn't noticed her till even now. Where is he lost? What is he busy thinking?
Sitting beside him without much gap between them, she took a sideways glance only to see his face buried between his hands.
Hesitantly forwarding her hand to his direction, she couldn't proceed further as all of a sudden he had lifted his head, now looking at her as if he'd felt her presence.
His eyes were shining.
Shining in the moonlight.
They were glistening.
Glistening with tears.
And by seeing Veer's state, even Shreya could not control her emotions anymore and she let herself free in Veer's arms, burying her face in his chest, sobbing loudly into his shirt while being curled up onto his lap and in return he only wrapped his arms around her, tight as ever in an almost not breakable grip, a sniff coming out of him as well as he nuzzled his face in her hair.
Both of them crying.
Shreya loudly, not afraid of showing her emotions while Veer silently, only to show himself strong for her.
They were crying at their fate.
They were angry, but at the same time they knew they couldn't do anything.
The only thing they could do was accepting it and comforting each other.
