Chapter 38 - I Don't Have A Good Feeling About This
~ Luciana's POV ~
"I'll drive Tomasso home to get his things since we left his car at the house and then we'll come back to get you and Alana once you've packed everything. Just pack whatever you can find, we can buy anything else we need after."
I nodded my head and leaned up to kiss Alessio, the kiss was soft and slow and I pecked his lips once more before mumbling against his lips. "I'm sorry about your car."
He wasn't showing it but I knew how upset he was that his car took quite so many hits when we were getting shot at. His Lamborghini was his favourite possession, everyone knew just how much he loved it.
"At least his freaking car is still here, we left mine there." I pulled away from Alessio the two of looking at Tomasso who was glaring at straight back at us. "Now stop with the PDA and hurry up because I don't fancy being shot at again."
"Well."
Tomasso rolled his eyes at me and got back in the car while Alessio just chuckled. "I'll see you soon baby. If they ask any questions just tell them I'll talk to them later, it'll give me some time to come up with something."
"Okay, be careful Alessio. I love you."
"I will, I love you too baby." With that he left me and got in the car driving away with Tomasso. Letting out a deep breath I went inside, my first thought being to go and find Alana and get her away from everyone as soon as possible.
Part of me felt bad for having to take her away from everyone and then lie to them but until we knew who here was working with my family we couldn't take any risks.
Making my way into the kitchen I smiled at Alessio's father who was talking to Alana about something while she just babbled away in her high chair.
"Ah Luciana you're back. Did you have a good night?" I nodded my head, a soft smile on my face as I made my way over to them.
"I did thank you, I hope she wasn't too much trouble last night."
"Oh don't worry, she's my only granddaughter, she's never too much trouble."
Have you ever had that strong feeling of guilt just hit you all in one go making you feel sick to your stomach? It didn't feel good, especially since I was pretty sure Alessio's father had nothing to do with what was going on, it wouldn't make any sense for him to follow my dad who betrayed him.
But you can never be too careful.
"You don't mind if I take her do you? I've got some things to do with Alessio and-"
"Of course Luciana, go ahead." He gave me a kind smile as he stood to his feet, Alana watching his movements as he did. "When you see Alessio tell him to call me, he's been AWOL since yesterday afternoon and there's things we need to discuss."
I nodded as I lifted Alana out of her high chair, kissing her cheek as I did. "I will."
Giving him one last smile I quickly left the kitchen and while avoiding as many people as I could I went upstairs to my room and packed mine and Alana's things. After that I went to Alessio's room and packed his things into a suitcase I found under the bed. He didn't have a lot of things here since he didn't actually live here, but he did spend quite a few nights here when Alana used stayed over and he's been here ever since Alana and I were here too.
It was only about half an hour later when Alessio came into my room with Tomasso in tow, the two of them quickly grabbing the full bags on the floor.
"You have everything?" I nodded my head, picking Alana up and grabbing her blankie which I knew she would never sleep without before following them out the room and downstairs.
"Oh. Where are you off to?" I heard Alessio curse quietly under his breath before turning away from the front door to see his mother standing behind us, a mix of confusion and sadness evident on her face.
"Mama, we're moving out for a while. Right now I think we just need our own space, we didn't plan on staying here so long after Luciana's foot healed."
She nodded her head in understanding although it didn't mean she was happy about it.
"You weren't going to say goodbye?"
I could tell Alessio was struggling to come up with some answers, especially because of the hurt on his mothers face. She was the last person he ever wanted to upset and it definitely distracted him to see her like this.
"I'm just not feeling very well, Alessio was going to come back later and tell you once he got us settled in and Alana taken care of. But now you know." I gave her a weak smile, trying my best to make my explanation seem as legit as I could.
"Oh, right. Well I won't hold you up then. Alessio stay with Luciana until she's feeling better, don't be in any rush to come back." Alessio put down the bags and went over to his mom, giving her a hug goodbye before we left.
Like I said, the lying just brought us guilt which was hard to deal with.
<<<<<<< >>>>>>> <<<<<<<
"You okay?" Tomasso came and sat down next to me on the couch holding a sleepy Alana in his arms.
"I don't know. I just keep getting this feeling something bad is going to happen."
"Don't worry Luciana, we're safe here. No one knows about this house except us." Letting out a sigh I leaned back into the couch. "We're not going to be here forever. Once we leave here anything could happen."
Tomasso and I sat in silence for a while, the two of us absentmindedly watching the movie which was playing on the TV although I'm sure neither of us were concentrating in the slightest. I didn't even know what it was about and yet I'd been staring at it for the last hour.
"Why are you guys watching this crap?" Both Tomasso and I looked up to see Alessio standing in the door way looking at the tv with disgust.
"What's wrong with it?"
"It's set in Russia for one thing." As soon as Alessio mentioned this one detail Tomasso quickly grabbed the remote and switched the TV off the same way you would if your parents walked in while you were watching an x rated movie and you didn't want to get caught.
They really do hate the Russians.
"Uh...Luciana, your child smells." I couldn't help but laugh at the disgust on Tomasso's face as he held Alana with two hands out in front of him.
"She's Alessio's child too, he can change her diaper."
"I would never do that to him." Tomasso nodded towards Alana hinting at me to take her while Alessio sent me a smug smile causing me to roll my eyes. Standing to my feet I took Alana out of his arms, shushing her when she started whining about her full diaper.
"Neither of you are fazed by gunshots but you're afraid of a full diaper." Ignoring their laughter I carried Alana upstairs to her nursery which was just as beautiful as all the other nursery's she's had over the past year since we've had to move and she had one at Alessio's parents house too. She really is one lucky girl.
"Shh baby, it's okay it's almost done." I had to hold back a chuckle when Alana glared at me, her eyes full of tears while I changed her diaper. Like father like daughter. She really always hated it but even more when she was tired like right now.
Ever since that brick smashed her window and woke her up her sleeping pattern has been all over the place. She always hated napping but now she hates sleeping even more, so she never wants to and it always makes her tired.
She really doesn't like anything except eating and playing.
Once I was finished changing her diaper I changed her into her pyjamas and took her back downstairs to see Alessio now sitting in the space I was previously occupying next to Tomasso. Of course they were both busy on their phones.
"Are you ready for bed?" Alessio glanced up from his phone when I spoke before standing to his feet still staring at his phone.
"Mhm."
"Words Alessio." My response caused him to smile before he put his phone in his pocket and came over to where I was standing by the door, gently taking Alana from my arms. "Yes baby I'm ready for bed. How's that?"
I rolled my eyes at him before turning around making my way upstairs with him following closely behind me. We went into the bedroom we were in last night, thankfully I found spare bedsheets in the closet to change the sheets earlier after last night's activities.
"You can get changed I'll go and put Alana to sleep in the nursery." I shook my head at Alessio while tying my hair up into a messy bun. "I want her to sleep in here, she can sleep in her portable crib."
"Luciana she'll be fine in the nursery."
"No she won't. Until I know we're completely safe she's sleeping in the same room as us." I could tell he wasn't happy with what I was saying but thankfully he didn't argue because it was a fight he wouldn't have won. He didn't see the state her crib ended up in after the glass smashed through her window. I did, and it's something I'll never forget.
"Alessio did you see Mason's message?" We both turned around to look at Tomasso who came in with a frown on his face which instantly brought the worst thoughts to my mind.
"No what did he say?"
Still to this day I found it cute that Tomasso, Alessio, Mason, Eli and Thea had a group chat but if I ever said that to Alessio he would just assure me it was for work and not a social thing.
We'd both know he was lying.
"He keeps asking where we are. I told him we're busy for the next few days and that he needs to take over but he's insisting on coming to see us."
"Crap." My worry only worsened in response to Alessio's reaction when he ran a hand through his hair in frustration.
"What's the problem Alessio? He can't find us if we don't tell h-"
"Mason is good with computers. Too good. He'll be able to track us." Alessio sat down on the bed with Alana in his arms, frustration evident on his face as he thought about the situation.
"If we tell him we blow our cover, if we don't he'll get suspicious and might try and track us. We have taken a lot of precautions already but he is really good."
At the mention of precautions my mind went back to earlier when Alessio stopped the car to take the tracker out and then took my phone to do something to it after he and Tomasso had done the same to theirs. I'm assuming he was turning something of to stop us being found easily.
I wasn't really good with technology so I have no clue what that would have been.
"Don't tell him. Either way he'll find out, but at least this way we haven't told him ourselves and it's not definite that he knows." Tomasso nodded taking note of Alessio's instructions before he messaged Mason back.
This whole thing was making me even more panicked and nervous. If Mason does decide to try and find us it's only a matter of time till he comes or someone else finds out which could lead the traitor straight to the house. Either way we weren't safe anymore.
"Alessio I don't have a good feeling about this." Once they detected the worry in my voice both Alessio and Tomasso tried to convince me it was going to be okay but it didn't help the nervous pit in my stomach like I was waiting for something to happen.
"I'll let you guys get some sleep, I'll be down the hall if you need me." Eventually after a while Tomasso stood up from his place on the bed where were all sitting, putting his phone in the pocket of the sweatpants he was wearing.
"Don't go Tomasso, stay here with us."
"Luci-"
"Please, I won't be able to sleep if you're not here. The thought of you getting hurt or being alone and something happens to you and we're here and you're there on your own and all alo-"
Tomasso gave me a soft smile and put his hand on my shoulder to cut me off before I carried on rambling. "Okay."
"He's sleeping on the floor." We both turned to look at Alessio who was glaring at us while taking off his hoodie leaving him in his sweats and T-shirt now matching Tomasso's outfit.
"Alessio the bed is huge and the floor is wooden, you can't make him sleep on the floor." Alessio narrowed his eyes at me before looking at Tomasso who was smirking next to me.
"Stay the hell away from me, do you understand me?" Tomasso raised his hands in surrender, the teasing smirk still on his face. "I won't do anything you don't want me to do Alessio."
I couldn't help but laugh at his remark causing Alessio to send his glare my way aswell.
"Stay away from Luciana aswell." I rolled my eyes at his words, knowing Alessio was just overreacting since Tomasso and I would be very separate.
"You'll be between us. You have nothing to worry about Alessio. Now if you can be helpful and go and get Alana's portable crib, that would be great." Giving him one last smile I grabbed my pyjamas and went into the bathroom.
By the time I'd taken a quick shower and brushed my teeth when I came back they'd brought the crib in but Alana was now lying flat on her back in the middle of the huge bed, her blankie held tight in a fist as she stared at the ceiling. What caught my attention though was the way Alessio and Tomasso were standing a few feet away from the side of the bed watching her like they were scared of her next move.
"What's going on?" Stepping into the bedroom I continued to towel dry my hair, watching as Alana turned her head to look at me too, a cheeky grin forming on her face when she saw me.
"You created a monster Luciana." I rose an eyebrow at Tomasso, an amused smile tugging at my lips. "Why? What happened?"
"Every time we get near the bed she starts crying." Looking between them and Alana I couldn't help but laugh as I got on the bed next to her, tickling her tummy lightly as I did causing her to smile.
"You can't handle a baby who's not even one yet?"
"Luciana she'll be one in a week, it's pretty much the same thing now."
"She's not one yet Alessio." My words came out a little harsher than I expected it to, much to their surprise. Alessio frowned at my reaction while Tomasso just cleared his throat awkwardly before pushing Alessio over to the bed.
Turning my attention away from them I picked Alana up ignoring the small whine she gave me and got off the bed, instead putting her into the crib by my side of bed. I stayed next to her crib whispering to her until she finally calmed down which didn't take long since she was extremely tired already.
By the time I turned around the the two of them were already in the bed, Alessio was glaring at Tomasso who was just smirking obviously not fazed by Alessio's tantrum. The bed was huge, definitely bigger than a California king size bed - how anyone could afford it was beyond me.
But like I always say - this is Alessio we're talking about.
Anyway, they had plenty of space to lie down without being right next to each other not that it was really a problem since I'm sure they must have shared a bed before at some point during their long friendship but they'd never admit that. Ever.
I watched as Alessio shuffled across the bed as close to me as he could when I got in the bed leaving as much space as he could between him and Tomasso.
"Why are you making this so awkward? I used to share a bed with Daliah all the time."
"Two girls sharing a bed is completely different Luciana and anyway, you wouldn't do that anymore now that you know she's a complete psycho so that point is irrelevant." I rolled my eyes at Tomasso's logic deciding not to reply.
We kept the light on for a few more minutes until Alana had fallen asleep before we turned them off, leaving just a night light on near her crib in case she woke up. Once the lights were off I closed my eyes moving in closer to Alessio getting more comfortable when he placed his arm over my waist.
"Oh crap, I forgot to brush my teeth."
Alessio let out a sound that sounded almost like an angry growl when Tomasso put the light back on and got out of the bed.
"You're so freaking irritating."
"That's what my accountant would say if he found out I didn't brush my teeth after spending thousands getting them whitened." Alessio mumbled something under his breath at Tomasso's words while I just chuckled.
He did make a good point.
Once Tomasso had left the room to go to the bathroom in his own room where his toothbrush was, Alessio used the opportunity to question me on what happened earlier.
"So do you want to tell me what that was about?"
No.
"I don't know what you're talking about Alessio."
Of course I do.
"Yes you do."
I know I do.
"No I -"
"Don't lie to me Luciana." Rolling my eyes I let out a tired sigh while staring up at the ceiling. "When she turns one, it'll be the one year anniversary."
He went silent for a moment once he realised I was talking about the fact I went into a coma the day Alana was born, before he finally leaned closer to me, pressing a kiss to my temple. "I know you don't want to think about that, but it's Alana's birthday."
"I know and that's what makes it worse Alessio, I feel so guilty every time I think of the 1st of March and feel sad instead of happy like I should."
"I know baby, but we can't change the past, that's how it happened as horrible as it was. But every year that day will still be our baby's birthday, we should celebrate her instead of thinking back to that day. In the end we still got the most beautiful princess out of it."
Alessio's words caused a soft smile to tug at my lips and I turned to look at him, the light of the night light glowing softly around us.
"You're right."
"Of course I am." He gave me a grin before leaning in to me and connecting his lips with mine. I placed my hand behind his head pulling him even closer to me as our lips moved in sync. Alessio's hand went to my hip deepening the kiss just as Tomasso came back into the room, letting out a groan when he saw what we were doing.
"That's gross." As soon he heard his bestfriend, Alessio pulled away from me and let out a sigh resting his forehead against mine. "Please can I stab him Luciana, just once?"
I shook my head, laughing at his words while Alessio just watching me, amusement in his eyes. Leaning towards me again he pecked my lips one more time before putting some distance between us when Tomasso got in the bed on the otherside of Alessio.
This really was the weirdest situation I've ever been in.
We must have all lay there for almost an hour trying to fall asleep before I checked the time on my phone to see that it was way past 1am.
Am I the only person that gets stressed about not falling asleep? The more I stress the less chance I have of falling asleep.
"What time is it?" I glanced over at Alessio when he spoke with a tired voice. "1:27am."
"Why do you have to be so accurate? Can't you just say 1:30am?" Tomasso also sounded tired but he wasn't tired enough to stop saying annoying things.
"Why do you have to talk?"
"Both of you be quiet." I could literally imagine them rolling their eyes when I told them to be quiet as I let out a sigh.
"I can't get my mind off who it is, the fact we let that person so close to Alana." I felt Alessio take my hand under the covers, giving it a light squeeze when he sensed my frustration.
It was Tomasso who broke the silence after a few moments.
"Maybe we can go through the list again until we fall asleep?"
"What, like how some people count sheep to fall asleep, we try and figure out who's trying to kill us?" I rolled my eyes at Alessio's attempt at making sense of Tomasso's suggestion. The funny part was he wasn't being sarcastic, he was being dead serious.
Excuse the pun.
"Yeah exactly."
Alessio seemed to think about it for a moment before finally agreeing.
"Sure." It's times like these when that are a cold hard reminder they're in the mafia.
"So, Daliah?"
Even though I did think at first she was the one who did it, she'd probably be quite low on my list now, I just couldn't see it being her.
"I don't think so, I know you guys have your reasons for not liking her but that doesn't mean it's enough to say she'd go as far as hurting children."
Of course Tomasso was quick to disagree once again.
"She's a freaking psycho Luciana." I scoffed at his words, wishing I could send him a glare at that moment. "Says the one who drugged me and kidnapped me from a club."
"Aren't we over that yet? It was two years ago and Daliah was the reason that happened, just to remind you."
"Shut up, the pair of you." I scoffed at Alessio's attempt at intervening. "Who's side are you on?"
"No one's, I'm too tired for this so just move on from Daliah."
Letting out a sigh I stared up at the ceiling thinking of the next person who I thought it could be. "Mason?"
"He's a freaking idiot but he's loyal. I know he doesn't like you for some reason but he would never hurt Alessio or I."
I scoffed at Tomasso's words, my mind going back to the confrontation I had with Mason the other day. "He hates me."
"And he's an idiot for hating the most beautiful person in the world, but I also don't think he would hurt Alana, he's not like that." Before I could respond to Alessio's cute statement Tomasso beat me to it.
"I didn't know Mason hated me."
Tomasso's comment only made me laugh and caused Alessio to release a string of insults towards him before we moved onto the next one on the list. By the time we'd gotten through everyone we were all still exhausted and still no where near falling asleep or coming to a shorter list of people.
For each person we had the same discussion - could they have done it, how would they have done it and at least one of us would have thought they were innocent. There was no one who we all agreed could have been the traitor.
"It had to be someone. The person most likely had a hand in Rafael being shot, then they tried to hurt Alana and then they tried to kill us. Who would want to do all those things? Who would gain the most from the four of us and Alana being dead?"
Alessio let out a sigh next to me, running a hand over his face. "I don't know Luciana. I have no freaking clue."
"We could always take a chance and try and cut the list down." Tomasso and I thought about Alessio's suggestion, knowing he meant telling a few people our location and hoping they weren't the one who was trying to hurt us.
"Is it worth risking Alana's safety?"
"Nothing is worth that, but like I said earlier, we're not going to be here forever. Eventually we will leave and they will try again. This is the best way to figure it out."
It fell silent for a moment while they thought about what I said before Tomasso shuffled around and the lamp by his side of the bed switched on. Both Alessio and I sat up to look at Tomasso who was now also sitting up, scrolling through his phone.
"Let's try Mason first, it's very unlikely it's him."
Tomasso dialled Mason's number putting it on speaker for us all to hear.
"Tomasso? Is something wrong?" Mason's voice came out a groggy when he spoke indicating he was asleep when Tomasso called him.
"No, I just wanted to check in to see if everything was okay, since Alessio and I aren't there." I could tell Tomasso didn't think this through before he actually called Mason because it was obvious he didn't have a reason to call him.
"Oh, yeah everything's good. Just take your time with whatever you're doing, I can handle things here."
Honestly that was the nicest thing I've ever heard Mason say.
"Are you sure bro?"
"Yes I am, now can I go back to sleep?" Tomasso chuckled at the irritation in Mason's voice before he hung up leaving the three of us in silence once again.
"It's not him." Tomasso nodded in agreement with Alessio causing me to frown. "How can you tell?"
"He would have asked where we were, or he would have kept Tomasso talking to give himself enough time to figure out how to track the call."
The rest of the conversations were pretty much the same, everyone was annoyed with Tomasso for calling too late and they didn't care to ask where we were. We called Silvana although Alessio was sure it wouldn't be his sister, then Eli and also Alessio's dad just to rule him out too.
"Thea next and then Daliah."
Tomasso called Thea who instantly picked up the phone and started going off at Tomasso for not calling her back earlier of replying to his messages. Alessio and I had to sit there trying to contain our laughter while Tomasso tried to talk to her but couldn't get a word in at all.
"Where the hell are you Tomasso? No one knows where you are."
Tomasso stayed silent for a moment a frown on his face as he stared at the phone in front of him while I glanced over at Alessio who was already looking at me.
"I'm doing something with Alessio, I'm not sure when we'll be back." I could tell it was hard for him to lie to her, and the fact she was asking so many questions wasn't helping our situation.
"What do you mean 'you're doing something with Alessio'? Tomasso just tell me where you are."
I had to resist the urge to roll my eyes when she kept trying to force an answer out of Tomasso until eventually he just told her he needed to go and hung up.
We sat in silence for a moment, the air in the room particularly tense after that phone call.
"I'll call Daliah." Tomasso didn't respond and instead just leaned back against the headboard clutching his phone in his hand with his eyes closed. I really did feel bad for him.
I grabbed my phone and dialled her number, listening as it rang for a while until she finally answered.
"What do you want?"
"Can we talk Daliah? Please?" I knew the only way I could see her true intentions would be if I tried to apologise to her but it was also genuine from my side. I felt extremely guilty for what happened, and all I wanted was to prove to Alessio and Tomasso that she wasn't the one who was trying to hurt us and to have my bestfriend back.
"There's nothing to talk about Luciana."
"Daliah-"
"No Luciana. You picked them over me. You don't get to call me and try and make up." I had to stop myself from reacting when she referred to Alessio's family with disgust in her voice, they weren't as bad as she was trying to make out.
"I didn't pick them, my daughter was attacked Daliah. There was only a handful of people I trusted at that time-"
"And I wasn't one of them?" I let out a sigh when she cut me off.
"No you weren't, you weren't here Daliah. I know I hurt you, but I was also hurting."
Daliah was silent for a moment before she spoke again. "I'm sorry about what happened Luciana but I can't just forgive you like that."
I knew it was futile to keep trying, but when I glanced over at Alessio he seemed satisfied enough that it wasn't her.
"Just let me know when you're ready to talk to me then and I'll give you a call."
I was about to hang up the phone when she quickly spoke again.
"Maybe we can meet? Where are you?" The second I heard the words my heart dropped and I closed my eyes, running a hand over my face.
"Luciana? Just tell me where you are."
"I'm sorry I have to go." With that I quickly hung up the phone, throwing it down in front of me.
"I guess we've narrowed it down to two." I glanced over at Alessio and Tomasso who were watching me with concern on their faces although I could see past it to see the anger too.
"I guess we have."
