Goodbye 2020
I want to say good riddance, but this horrendous year has actually taught me a lot.
It's taught me that you can never underestimate the strength of a community who is supporting their fallen brothers and sisters.
And that a community is far more than just the people who live near you.
Rest in peace to all the victims of racial injustice and police brutality. You didn't get to see 2021, but I promise to do my best to make it a better year for other black people, and for those facing racism in general.
I've always believed this, but I hope that 2020 has taught those in power that our health care system is not just a system you can take money away from. It's a system made up of wonderfully selfless workers who have laid down their lives and continue to sacrifice their own health to save others.
I hope 2021 brings you so much more happiness than this year has, and I hope your worth is finally valued by everyone.
Rest in peace to all those who have died from Covid-19, and I'm sending all the love I have to those still suffering, and to families who are grieving.
My heart goes out to all those being persecuted for their religion, race, sexuality, gender or any other reason. I promise to do my part, whether that is by signing petitions or spreading awareness.
We have to make 2021 a better year.
I made a New Year's resolution a few years ago, but I didn't manage to keep it.
I'm trying now.
It was to try and see the positives in everything.
What are the positives in 2020?
- Taylor Swift's music
- The US election result
- Our health workers finally got the recognition they deserve
- I finally finished writing a book
- There have been some good TV shows out there that I've watched! (Julie and the Phantoms- tell your friends!)
- And a few other things that I can't remember at this moment
(my brain's like a sieve, but what's new?)
Looking back on this, the good things seem so insignificant compared to all the bad things that have happened, and are continuing to happen.
But, we have to acknowledge the things that bring us joy, even if it's just for a few minutes. Because, when we feel like all is lost, those are the moments we have to hold on to.
Rest in peace to all those we lost this year. I'll keep you in my heart and never forget the loss, whether I knew you personally or not.
2021's for you.
