The Awakening
AUDREY POV
I laid in bed feeling a soft blanket over me. I wanted to continue sleeping but this intense light wouldn't let me rest. Finally, I opened my eyes.
It was difficult to keep my eyes open since there was so much light. After my eyes adjusted to the bright sunlight I got a better view of where I was.
The room was small. There was a small couch in front of me and a TV was placed on the wall over the couch.
I looked to my left and saw a large window. The blazing sun rays shined through it.
I looked down, examining myself. I was wearing a blue hospital gown. I realized right away I was connected to a machine.
I felt a sense of panic. Why was I in the hospital?
Suddenly I saw someone walk in.
It appeared to be a nurse. As soon as she took a good look at me she practically screamed.
"Omg you're awake!" She was clearly surprised.
She immediately ran out.
What happened to me?
Almost immediately multiple nurses and a doctor came in the room. After what seemed to be hours of check ups I was finally assisted by an older woman who came to take me home.
"I'm so happy you're finally awake miss Audrey." The woman began to cry as she hugged me tightly.
Who was this woman? She clearly knew me.
"Xavier is going to be so happy to see you." She beamed with joy.
Who was Xavier?
"The doctor informed him you're finally awake. He's the one who called me and told me to come pick you up and take you home. He really wanted to be here when you woke up, but he had a business trip in London so he's not here at the moment. But don't worry he's on his way back. As soon as he heard the news you woke up, he immediately left London. He should be back tonight."
The woman began to help me change into some new clothes. I was still so confused. But from the looks of it, this woman knew a lot about me.
I was taken downstairs in a wheelchair. A luxurious limousine stood in front of the hospital and two different men who appeared to be bodyguard's waited for us.
Where the hell were they taking me?
The older lady helped me inside and soon the car began to move.
I sat quietly in my seat observing the landscape. I felt calm, too calm in fact. This whole situation was so confusing. I didn't recognize anyone here.
Had the woman called me Audrey?
That name sounded so foreign. But from the looks of it, Audrey, was me.
The car stopped and I realized we had stopped at a large gate. Then the car began to move again. The gates were now open and soon we had arrived at a place the older woman had claimed was my home.
The older woman helped me out. As I stared at the monstrosity of a home I was amazed by how big and beautiful it was. It was more of a mansion and far from your typical home.
As I was directed inside I was equally enchanted by its beauty.
The gorgeous white walls and tall ceilings added to the elegance of the mansion. A large chandelier stood in the entrance. A beautiful staircase greeted you as soon as you walked further into the house.
"Let me guide you to your bedroom."
I walked what felt like an endless amount of stairs and finally I arrived in a room.
The bedroom was just as beautiful as the rest of the house. However there was a large king size bed, large windows, tall ceiling, and grand chandelier in the center of the room. The room looked fit for royalty.
Although once again this room just like the rest of the house felt foreign to me. I didn't recognize at all where I was. All I could do was blindly believe everything I was being told.
"You can rest here for the time being. Are you hungry? I can ask the chef to make you some porridge. I think it would be best if you eat something soothing for your stomach since you've been in a coma for a while."
I was in a coma? I had heard the doctor say it but I hadn't really processed it until now.
"How long was I in a coma?" I finally spoke.
"Oh darling, you were in a coma for almost an entire month. Xavier was devastated. He couldn't function properly. He wouldn't eat, he just stayed by your side praying that you would wake up, but you just wouldn't respond."
Who was this man? Was he my father?
"When he got the call he urgently needed to go to London for work, it took everything in him to leave. He left two days ago. But from how he sounded on the phone a couple of hours ago, it was clear he is beyond excited to see you again and that you're finally awake."
The older lady grabbed my hands.
"We are all so happy you're finally back home. Everyone missed you." It looked like she was about to cry.
I instinctively gave her a hug. It made me sad to see her cry.
She hugged me back.
"Alrighty then, that's enough crying for today. I'll go get you some porridge. It might take a while for the chef to make it but it'll be worth it. Would you like to take a bath? Maybe it will help you relax."
I nodded in agreement. A bath was exactly what I needed right now. I needed some time alone to process what was going on.
"Great! I'll go ahead and prepare the bath for you."
She walked away and headed to the bathroom.
While I waited I began to observe the room. I walked towards the large window and took in the beautiful view of the forest. This home was surrounded by lots of trees, it was the only home in the area.
"The bath is ready for you. I'll get you some new clothes and leave them on the bed for you to change into as soon as you're done."
"Thank you" I said.
"It's my pleasure. I'm just glad you're a lot better now. Well I'll go and make sure you get your porridge, I still need to tell the chef to make it. At this rate you'll never eat." She began to laugh at herself and then headed out.
She seemed kind. However I still had no idea who she was or where I was.
The lady said this was my home but I didn't recognize this place at all.
The bathroom was just as luxurious and elegant as the bedroom and the home. I took off my clothes and got inside the tub.
No one and nothing was familiar. The kind lady could have been lying to me for all I knew.
After a couple of minutes of just laying in the tub I decided to take a shower. As soon as I was done I took the towel nearby and I dried myself. I then wrapped it around me as I headed back into the bedroom.
I changed into a beautiful white dress. There were white slippers on the floor so I put them on. I brushed my hair and then headed downstairs to look for the kind lady from before.
As I walked downstairs I couldn't help but be mesmerized by the beautiful interior of the home.
Everything looked so luxurious. I still couldn't get over how tall the ceilings were nor how massive the mansion was. It took me a while to reach the stairs but I found them.
I began to observe the home examining different rooms. I ended up seeing a woman who appeared to be a maid.
"Excuse me, do you know where that older woman who helped me earlier went? I can't seem to find her." I wonder how many maids worked at this home. Whoever owned this home was very wealthy.
"Oh miss Audrey. Your back! Dorothy had informed all of us that you were back but now that I'm seeing you, I can't believe you're really here." The girl seemed really happy to see me.
She walked closer to me and gave me a hug.
"Dorothy said not to bother you since you were just released from the hospital, but everyone is so happy to see you back."
The girl was almost in tears.
I didn't know what to do and was surprised by the sudden hug. I gave her a hug not knowing how to respond.
"Thank you for worrying about me." Is all I said.
Who did "everyone" mean?
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get so emotional. Dorothy is in the kitchen. Come with me. I'll take you to her."
So I guess the kind older lady was called Dorothy.
I followed the girl and she led me straight to the kitchen.
As soon as I saw Dorothy a look of worry was evident in her face.
"Miss Audrey what are you doing down here? You should be resting."
She reminded me of someone. I just couldn't figure it out. Maybe my mother?
Dorothy grabbed the tray with food and we walked upstairs to my bedroom.
I laid back in bed as Dorothy insisted I rest.
As I sat up straight Dorothy handed me the tray with food.
"Here is your porridge. I also brought you a cup of your favorite citron tea."
"Thank you" I said.
I began to eat the delicious porridge. I hadn't realized how hungry I was until I ate. After I was done eating I began to drink the tea Dorothy had claimed was my favorite.
I took a sip and I realized it was indeed my favorite tea. It made me happy and reminded me of someone. I just didn't know who.
I had initially freaked out about not recognizing anything or anyone. But everyone was very kind and I felt like I was remembering things. Maybe tomorrow everything would be fixed. Maybe I just needed some rest and then everything would be solved.
Maybe I was trying to avoid the fact that I didn't recognize anything. But I tried to push away that thought and headed to bed after eating. It was late and I desperately hoped that tomorrow I would miraculously remember everything about my life. I would recognize Dorothy and this man Xavier, as well as the maid from earlier and this "everyone" she mentioned.
Was I naive to think that everything would be solved so quickly? I wouldn't realize that it was fear that was not allowing me to accept my reality until the next morning.
