(WINNER OF WRITE RIGHT! BASIC WRITING WORKSHOP HELD LAST APRIL 19, 2015 DURING THE WATTPAD SUMMER MEET-UP)
Although there were clusters of students around, only a cup of coffee and dwindling thoughts accompanied me on a hot Friday afternoon at the university quadrangle. It's the first day of summer, but my hell of a semester isn't over yet. I still have an hour and a half to waste while waiting for my next and final class for the day.
I sat comfortably under a shady tree near the stage, and watched a couple sitting on a bench, shamelessly flirting in public. I felt my chest wince in pain as I realized how envious I was of their relationship. I kinda wish I'd have one, too.
That's where he came in, his chest heaving as he jogged towards my direction. Beads of sweat dripped from his temple, to his cheeks, and off his jawline. And even from a twenty-meter distance, I could see his eyes blazing blue.
Smiling, he sat beside me. His hands supported him as he laid his head back. "You look rather...glum." He said.
I looked at him with my brows furrowed. "Well, who would want to drown himself in textbooks on the first day of summer? People should go out with their family and friends, have fun on beaches, and parties, and stuff." I started picking on the grass beside me.
"Maybe he's someone who needs to catch up on their grades?" he chuckled. "I'm Jarielle Frost."
I averted my gaze from the grass to his ocean blue eyes, and after a few seconds, I replied, "Like frosted glass?" I laughed inwardly. "That's...cute. I'm Ichigo Tachibana. Ichigo like..strawberry."
Jarielle grinned. "Sounds delicious...like strawberry frappe."
"Mm, yeah."
Then, there was the discreet chatting of the students, the blazing heat of the sun...and the silence. Until words poured out of my mouth, without having my brain filter what I was about to say. "I definitely think we should do something different."
"Like?" his voice had a tinge of curiosity.
I didn't think twice. There was just this lot of craziness and excitement in my mind and I just blurted it out. "We should be best friend, right here, right now."
He didn't think twice, too. "Yeah, we should."
We both grinned at each other until we finally gave in and laughed.
It didn't matter how long we've known each other, nor how much we know each other. It was then when he didn't question my intention/ it was when we needed no reasons.
The noise seemed to just mute out and people seemed to just fade out except for the both of us. Everything else just fell right. No words, no explanation.
