|TWENTY THREE| Walk

Dove's POV

Twilight didn't ask, but he had many questions regarding the man I was meeting. And to be honest, I have many questions too regarding this same man. I have known this guy for such a long time, and yet he feels like a stranger to me.

"I was expecting you to contact me," Lucifer said as we both walked alongside each other. His overcoat flew along with the blowing wind. That's a pretty shady outfit he is wearing.

"Of course, you were expecting it." "After all, everything always goes as you plan it," I replied as he chuckled. "Writing your contact information in between the pages of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was a pretty smart move."

"Even someone like me couldn't predict it."

"But I knew you would read the book, and that's why I wrote my contact information in it." "Not even the sins can contact me through this private number," Lucifer stated. a private number just for me? Is this part of some bigger plan Lucifer is plotting?

"I feel special," I replied sarcastically.

"Your boyfriend; Twilight Harris." "Is he aware of your relationship with the sins?" Lucifer asked. I raised my eyebrows at him.

"You already know the answer to it, then why question me in the first place?" I asked.

"Because it's more satisfying when I get the answer from the direct source than from my intel," he said. Lucifer is a lot like me at times. I heard from Satan once that he suffers from nightmares and insomnia from time to time.

"I won't dare talk about my relationship with you all to any outsider," I replied.

"But Leviathan will probably want you to come clean with the Harris brothers to protect your relationship with them," Lucifer said. He's putting my devotion to him to the test. I am not loyal to him or anything, but I won't drag Vinter or Twilight into this crime world. They are better off not knowing about any of this.

I smirked. "What can I say?" "I don't have enough guts to go against the most powerful man in this country—Luci."

"Hopefully you won't involve any of them in this," I said.

"I never make things personal." "So you need not worry about your boyfriend or your soulmate," he replied.

"Your soulmate though..." Lucifer said. "... quite an intriguing man he is."

"What do you mean?" I asked. He shook his head.

"Can I ask you something, Luci?" I asked.

"Yes?"

"Are you really a human?" I asked. He laughed as he stepped forward in the light a bit. He stepped in front of me and bent down to my eye level. I could see his crimson eye glowing while his darker eye remained dull. It is rare to have crimson eyes, and this man is heterochromatic. How unique is this man?

"Do I not look human enough to you?" He asked, his head tilting. His closeness is making me nervous.

"Your eyes are uncommon." "I have never seen someone with such eyes," I said.

"Well, even I don't have the answer to that." "But I do grow old like normal humans, and I don't drink blood, and I can feel pain when I'm hurt," he explained. "I guess that makes me a human."

He straightened up his posture, and we started walking again. I didn't ask anything further. Human or not, what he's doing by cleaning up the trash in society is admirable.

"So you want my help in exposing your father's wrongdoings to the public, right?" Lucifer asked. He didn't seem offended by my prior statements and assumptions about him.

"Yeah," I replied. That was the reason I asked to meet him. I didn't know he would agree to meet me so soon. This morning, I texted him about how I needed help exposing my father to the public. This is the only way for me to save my father from sin's clutches. From what I can see, Lucifer is helping me unofficially and is not a part of the sins. If Leviathan finds out about this—about me taking Lucifer's help—he'll probably never talk to me again.

"If I go public with my father's corruption, he'll be imprisoned for the rest of his life." "Like that, the sins won't be able to get their hands on him, and he'll also pay for what he did," I said. Lucifer chuckled.

"You always think things through; are you sure you are 23 years old?" He asked. With a smug expression on my face, I nodded.

"I am indeed 23 years old."

"Okay. I will not be helping you personally with this, but I have a contact. There's an old acquaintance of mine working at your father's office." "She'll be guiding you in this," Lucifer said.

"A woman?" I asked. "Is she just an old acquaintance?"

I wiggled my eyebrows, as I expected to get at least some dirt on Lucifer, though the chances were next to zero. But I hoped it was some sort of affair or something.

Lucifer smiled. "I can see why Asmodeus opened up to you."

And he ignored my question like he always does.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing at all..." he paused. "It means nothing."

"You are the most enigmatic man I know," I mumbled.

"So about that contact of yours—the woman?" "What is her name?" I asked.

"She will contact you herself." "You can ask her about the details," he replied.

"I'll make sure she contacts you by tomorrow."

"Aw! Come on! "I'm curious now!" I whined. Lucifer raised his eyebrows at me.

"We are friends, Luci!" Tell me already.

"I don't make friends," he said. "But it seems like your friend is waiting for you there."

He pointed in the direction of my house, and I saw Haze wandering outside my home like a ghost in the dark. I sighed as I realized I had not informed her since I got to work at Hope Records. She's going to shower me with questions and taunts.

"You should leave before she notices your presence," I said.

"Don't worry about that," he said. "I'm walking on the darker side of the path."

He was correct; he had always been on the darker side. This man is so calculative that I almost mistake him for a computer.

"Well then," I said. "See you, Luci."

I waved at him, not expecting any reply because he would never give one. I jogged towards Haze. I looked back to see where Lucifer was, and I could still see his silhouette. Why is he not leaving?

I reached Haze, who was mumbling to herself as she angrily stomped lightly when she saw me approaching. But her eyes fell behind me, and her expression showed confusion.

"Let's go inside," I said, pulling her along with me.

"But-"

"Not now," I said as I dragged her. She didn't argue and let me drag her. I gave one last glance to where Lucifer was before closing the door, and all thanks to my sharp vision, I could see his figure retreating. Was he waiting till I went inside my home?

"Go on, take a seat." I gestured for Haze to sit. She rolled her eyes but sat anyway.

"What the actual hell is going on with you?" "Why are you not answering my texts?" She asked.

"I did!" I replied as I saw her about to argue. "In my head, I replied to all your texts."

I laughed, and she just glared at me. She lets out a huff in annoyance.

"Okay..." I said. "I'm sorry, and you can let out your frustration by ranting all you want."

The moment I said that, she bombarded me with questions—questions about what happened between me and Vinter. What happened between Vinter and Nina? What am I doing? Why did I not give her details about everything that happened?

While she rambled on with more questions, I prepared her favorite black coffee with lemon and honey added. I don't understand people who drink coffee since I'm allergic to caffeine. So for myself, of course, I prepared hot chocolate.

Setting the cup of coffee in front of Haze and a cup of hot chocolate in my hand, I took a seat.

"Okay, now I've heard all your questions," I said. "So shut up and let me answer them."

"Alright."

So I proceeded to tell her everything. Well, of course, excluding the sin part and everything that relates to it.

"So you are telling me that Vinter rejected you and believed Nina instead?" "While Twilight, Vinter's half-brother, who doesn't even know you that well, instead believed you." She asked.

"That's pretty much how it is."

"This is crazy, Dove!" "Crazy!" Haze exclaimed. I sipped on my hot chocolate.

"It is what it is," I said.

"So you are dating Twilight now?" She asked as I nodded.

"What was Vinter's reaction?" She asked.

"I haven't seen him in days, and neither has Twilight." "We'll tell him about it when either one of us meets him first," I said.

"I am worried about how he will react," Haze mumbled. Of course she'll worry about him; that's what everyone always does. Worry about Vinter Harris; he gets all the attention all the time.

"Sure you do," I said, rolling my eyes.

"Look, Dove, I know he's wrong." "But you know better than anyone how he is." "It's not easy to accept the fact that your brother is dating your soulmate," Haze explained. I let out a dry laugh.

"And you think it was easy to accept that my soulmate is dating my arch-nemesis and is not believing a single word I said?" I replied.

"But he did believe you later, didn't he?" Haze said. "Give him a chance to explain."

"I'll see about that later," I said. Haze sighed.

"Where is everyone?" "Why is no one home?" Haze asked.

"Who knows?" I replied. "When is everyone even home anyway?"

Haze knows all about my parental issues. I mean, we grew up in the same neighborhood, so it was pretty obvious. Don't think that I don't care about my family! They went out for some dinner but didn't bother to invite their criminal child. You know they have to keep their good reputation.

"Who was that mystery man with you?" "Was that Twilight?" Haze asked. I shook my head.

"An old friend from the center," I replied.

"He seemed pretty enigmatic," she commented.

"Yeah, he likes to create an atmosphere of suspense," I said. "Like a true vigilante."

"Tell me all about Twilight, come on!" "First, show me his photo!" "The way you described him, I have a feeling he's a ladies' man," Haze said.

"Not at all!" I replied. "My bunny is the most innocent man I know."

"Bunny? already on nickname terms! How cute!" Haze squealed.

"Nickname? Oh, dear!" As I took off my t-shirt, I said

"Holy shit!" She screamed. "A tattoo!"

"Yep."

"Did he do it?" She asked as I nodded.

"It's his design," I replied.

"You like him a lot," Haze said.

"Like?" "I think I'm falling in love with him," I said. "It was so fast that I lost track of time."

I put on my t-shirt and fetched out my phone to show her Twilight's photo.

"Oh my!" "He's indeed very good-looking," Haze said. "But his eyes are so innocent and pure."

Haze is good at physiognomy, like me. She can tell a lot about a person just by looking at their face.

"And he even got me this ring," I said, showing her the ring Twilight had given me the day before.

"How sweet! You are acting like a newly engaged couple." "Are you sure you two have just begun dating?" She asked.

"Perhaps Mother Nature made a mistake by making Vinter my soulmate," I explained. "Perhaps Twilight is my soulmate," I replied.

At first, I didn't doubt mother nature; I was never given a chance to. But now that I see my bond with Twilight, I feel like Mother Nature indeed made a mistake in making Vinter my soulmate. And this is why I need to break the bond with him. Yes, this is the right path.
