|TWENTY SIX| Rivalry
Twilight's POV
I was hungry so I went to the kitchen to get myself something to eat. It was past midnight and everyone would be asleep by now, including butlers. It's peaceful with people not around in this house. Only if this mansion wasn't so huge, we won't be needing so many workers. Often this place feels suffocating for someone like me, knowing how I still get judgemental looks from our workers as everyone knows I'm the illegitimate child of this family.
Before I entered the kitchen, I could hear clanking sounds coming from inside. So I peeked in and saw a slender figure walking around the kitchen. It was pretty much obvious who it was, cause even at night he was well dressed in a tucked-in shirt and pants.
"Vin?" I asked. My brother got startled at my sudden presence and he dropped the plate he was holding. Luckily it didn't break.
It has been days since I last saw him. Where was he all these days? He was never home, and even if he was— he was always cooped up in his room.
"Twilight..." he said as he bent down and picked up the plate. The timer of the microwave went off before I could ask anything.
"Sorry about that," Vinter spoke as he turned the microwave off and opened it. He pulled out a bowl of lasagna from it which he was probably reheating.
"Want some?" He asked as he looked at me. He has cut his hair, and he has dark circles underneath his amethyst eyes. He looks cleaner than he did back then, but something about him has changed.
"Yeah I'm famished," I said. He grinned and served lasagna for me too very generously.
"Vinter... where the heck was you all these days?" I asked. He placed our plates on the dining table as we both sat opposite each other.
"I was busy with some stuff, brother," he replied calmly. There was a weird glint in his amethyst eyes, something that even Dove has. I could never figure out what that shine was for. I also could never figure out how Vinter is the only one in our family with this odd eye colour.
"What stuff?"
"Some work... for the new song and my upcoming solo album," he lied. Dove told me Vinter has not been to the Hope records lately, so where exactly was he up to all this time?
"Okay..." I mumbled as I stared at him. He raised his eyebrows at me.
"What?"
"You changed your style," I commented. His hands instinctively touched the dark circles underneath his eyes.
"Yeah... I wanted to do something new," he replied. "How do I look?"
I smiled. "You have always been the more elegant one between the two of us, Vin. This style suits you."
I could never be on Vinter's level. He's elegant, a perfect son and he'll even handle our father's business well. Some things I probably will never be able to do. I might look insecure and someone with an inferiority complex, but that's how I was raised to be.
"And you are a bold one," he said gesturing at my tattoos as I blushed. "Only if you wore a shirt... I still don't get how you can sleep half-naked?"
"It's more comfortable like this."
"And how do you manage to sleep dressed up like that? Do you even take off your clothes while showering?" I laughed. He burst out laughing.
"Well! I always have my birthday suit on while showering, alright!" He exclaimed. I couldn't help but laugh harder. Vinter is always perfectly dressed, we are pretty much opposite if you ask me.
"Your sense of humour is as bad as ever... but I always enjoy this brotherly time we spend, Vin. Let's do this more often," I requested.
"You are right. How about we go to the arcade on weekends from now on?" He asked.
"Sounds like a plan. But won't paparazzi and people bother you?" I asked.
"We'll go to our old favourite arcade," he said. I stared at him in disbelief.
"That place has been shut down for ages, Vin," I said. He grinned.
"And I have money, baby brother," he replied. "I'll renovate that place. I was planning to do so anyway."
"Sounds like a plan," I said giving him a thumbs up.
He grinned.
He almost reminded me of Dove. I mean why won't he? They are soulmates after all— soulmates yes...
"I'm dating Dove," I accidentally blurted out before I could stop myself. I covered my mouth with my hands later. He stared at me and blinked a few times, not expecting my outburst like this.
"I'm... I didn't mean to blurt it out like that... sorry," I apologized. Vinter gently smiled.
"I know you are dating," he said. I tilted my head.
"Dove told me about it."
"You met her?" I asked. He nodded.
"At work," he replied.
"Oh..." was all I could say. This is going to be awkward between us I suppose. I slumped in my seat. Vinter chuckled.
"Don't worry, nothing would be awkward between us," he said as if he just read my mind.
"I broke up with Nina... by the way," he stated. I straightened up immediately and stared at him curiously.
"Why?" I asked. He shrugged.
"Found out the truth..." he replied. "Should have trusted you and Dove right from the beginning."
"Well... at least now you know what the entire picture is," I said. He smiled.
"I want to make it up to Dove," he said. "I will make it up to Dove."
"What?" I asked confused.
"I want Dove," he said. My eyes widened. No! This cannot be happening... not when I am finally realizing that I'm falling in love with Dove.
"She's..."
"Your girlfriend, I know," he said. "She's going to break our soulmate bond either way. But that is not going to stop me from trying to win her over. We are soulmates with or without the bond, cause we do share the same soul after all. So I'll try my best to win her over till the very end."
"I am telling you about this cause I don't want to have any hard feelings between us brothers... let's keep our love life and brotherhood separate, yeah?" He asked.
Even though what he said makes sense, there's no way I'll let go of Dove after knowing how fast I'm falling in love with her. He confessed and it gave me more motivation to hold on to Dove. They might be soulmates, but what I have for Dove is going to be even deeper than that. So, just like him, I'm going to fight for my love too.
"Let's do it then," I said. "You try your best and I'll do what I have to do."
Vinter chuckled.
"My baby brother has grown up so much," he said as he got up from his seat carrying his plate. "Are you going to bring Dove to the family event?"
"Yeah, though I haven't asked her about it yet. Guess I'll do it tomorrow," I replied.
"Keep your girlfriend close... you never know when your brother will steal her from you," he winked at me as he walked away chuckling.
Dove and Vinter are so parallel to each other— and at the same time, they are poles apart. Maybe I'll lose my sanity trying to understand these two.
After Vinter disappeared to probably his room, I finished my food and started walking towards mine. But on the way to my room, I heard noise from inside my father's study room.
I stood in front of the room contemplating whether I should eavesdrop or not. Eventually giving in to my curiosity. I pressed my ears to the door listening to my father speak.
"I am glad you helped me meet them," I heard him speak. He's probably talking to someone on a call.
"We have arranged the meeting right after the event, with them," he said. Meeting? With whom?
"You will be going to the event right?" He asked. Whatever the caller said, my father was pleased with their reply since he let out a satisfying 'hum'.
"Perfect!" My father exclaimed. "Don't worry Vinter is in this with us, he won't tell a soul about this plan."
What plan?
"Why are you worried about cops?" My father asked. "Vinter is my son, I know him! I can guarantee you, he won't tell a soul about it!"
Cops?!
I gasped as I stepped back from the door. Why would they talk about cops? Is this some illegal business my father is on? Does Vinter know about it?
"Twilight?" I heard my mother's voice as my head snapped to face her.
"Mom... father is..." before I could finish my statement my mother dragged me to my bedroom.
As we entered my room, she closed the door and looked at me.
"Why were you eavesdropping?" She asked.
"I just got intrigued... but mom! He was talking about cops and all!" I exclaimed. "Vinter knows about it! I should ask Vinter!"
"You are not asking anyone about anything, Twilight Harris!" She scolded.
"But why?" I asked. "If cops are to be involved it has to be something illegal right?!"
"That is not your place!" She exclaimed. "If cops get involved... you and I will be the ones who'll suffer the most, Twilight! Don't forget what our status is in this house!"
"You know what's going on, don't you?!" I asked.
"Even if I do, I won't be telling you about it," she said. "Pretend you never heard anything and don't try to interfere in your father's business, honey."
"This is wrong!" I argued.
"Oh! Is it?! If I'm trying to protect my child from the world, how is that wrong Twilight?! Can't you see, I'm doing all this for you!" She yelled.
"For me?!"
"For me huh?! Did I ever ask you to go through all the trouble?! I'm ready to leave this place if you are willing to go with me, mom!" I have said these words so many times that I lost count of it.
"Not this again..." she sighed.
"Get some sleep sweetheart, don't you have work tomorrow?" She asked as she walked towards the door and opened it.
"Stay away from your Father's work for our sake, baby. Please," she pleaded.
She left the room hanging me with my thoughts. Not get involved when I know that something troublesome is going on in this house. How do I not get involved?
"Sorry mom, but I'll have to get involved this time. And I will do what I think is right, starting with confronting Vinter about this," I mumbled to myself.
It might turn out to be a huge mistake later, but if it's about cops and all then it must be something big. It must be something that shouldn't be happening.
