Alaska-Part 2: Sitka

((Shout out to time_lord_of_221b for drawing this pic of what she imagined Alaska to look like! That pic was my entire inspiration for this chapter. So I decided that that's what younger Alaska would look like!!!))
((Alaska is one of the lesser known states when it comes to History, so I thought that I'd write a series for her. I'll also do one for Hawaii. I'll write pt. 1 later.))

Alaska was a young large wasteland when Russia found her. many people came through her beforehand, but never stayed for long... Moving on to populate Canada and Native America.
So basically Alaska was the bridge that brought the people there!
But of corse poor Alaska was alone most of the time, everyone thought she was just a wasteland.

Alaska walked with Mr. Russia across the tundra.
"We'll check the bear traps da?"
She nodded looking around at her home, her long hair tied in two braids that blew in the cold wind.
The sound of barking and whimpering was heard from one of the traps.
"Mr. Russia, what is that?..." She asked, slightly afraid.

"Sounds like a wolf! Oh well, we'll kill it and eat it for dinner anyway!"

Alaska nodded softly as they approached the trap.
A wolf pup was caught in the trap, the poor things leg was mangled, it shrinked back in fear as they approached, causing it to let out a small yelp of pain as the trap lurched.
"Looks like we're out of luck, it's just a pup. Common Alaska, let's go." Russia tugged on Alaska's hand over to the direction of the next trap.
But Alaska pulled back. "What are you doing?" He asked, confused.
She walked over to the trap and bent down to see the pup, looking into its scared and sad yellow eyes.
Don't worry... I'll get you out. You're all alone too.
She began to try and pry the trap open. Ivan sighed and walked over to her.
Alaska pried the trap open, letting the pup free. It yelped in pain and lay on the snow helplessly. She picked up the pup gently, holding it in her arms.
"Alaska, we have to leave the pup here. It's mother may come back for it." Russia told her, bending down to Alaska.
"But it's mother is dead." She deadpanned, looking up at Russia with her ice blue eyes.
He blinked in surprise, "how do you know that?"
"It told me."
"Who told you?"
"The pup."
"It's not good to lie Alaska." Mr. Russia said furrowing his brow, frowning.
"I'm not lying. That wolf we killed and brought in yesterday was its mother. She ran away scared and ended up in the trap."
Mr. Russia sighed, "she's alone just like me..." She said, looking down at the poor pup.
"Can we keep it? Please!" Alaska had never asked for much, she had mostly just sat by herself, or stayed around Mr. Russia, she did whatever she was told usually.
"Very well, you can keep it..." Ivan decided, his childish smile coming back onto his face.
For the first time in a while Alaska let a soft smile form on her lips.
We're the same. We both didn't have anyone... But not we have each other...

--Time skip.--

It was a few months later and the pup had fully recovered. Alaska had given her the name Sitka.
She sat outside of her tent, craving at a piece of bone, Sitka sitting next to her, panting softly, its yellow eyes wandering around at the camp.
She furrowed her brow in concentration as she finished the charm, attaching it to a long, semi-thick strip of leather.
"Here..." She said, wrapping it and thing it loosely around the dogs neck. The charm had her name engraved into it in Russian.
"Now you're my dog, and we'll work together from now on!" Sitka barked happily in response, licking her cheek.
She hugged her dog around the neck.
I'm finally happy...

--Time skip--

Russia, finding Alaska to be a wasteland, sold her to America with what today would be 2 Million dollars, although it didn't seem like such a good deal to the American's then, we all know that the other states were proved wrong later on.
Poor Alaska was having mean names shot at her left and right, she didn't know what to do...

"Worthless!"
"Polar bear garden!"
"Wasteland!"
"Seward's ice box!"

"S-stop it please!" Alaska begged as she was being beat up by a couple of the other states.
"Common! Why don't you get up wasteland!" One of them yelled.
"Yeah! What're you going to do to stop us!!!?" Another one smirked, "no one loves you, you're just a piece of ice!!!"
A loud growling came from the distance as well as the sounds of barking, Sitka ran up across the ice, growling at the other states, standing in between them and Alaska in a protective matter.
"S-Sitka?" She sniffled, sitting up.
The other states got scared and ran off as the dog chased them out.
Sitka came trotting back, panting softly, her tail wagging back and forth.

She nuzzled Alaska, licking her cold rosy red cheek.
Alaska giggled, hugging her dog. "I love you Sitka, thank you for chasing them away..." Sitka barked happily in response.

--Time Skip--

Now time passed and the gold rush happened and stuff like that, Alaska avoided the civil war, not getting why the country was tearing itself in half fighting each other.
But things were soon to get worse. Sitka began to decline in purpose as Alaska's capital around 1906 when the fur and whale trade was shut down.
Alaska was starting to finally grow up and was around her teenage years now.

Alaska bent down to Sitka, who was whimpering, laying on the ground. Just a little under two months ago Alaska had found that Sitka was starting to act weird, not to mention she was gaining weight. Going to the doctor she found that her dog was pregnant. Everything seemed to be going well before Sitka began to fall ill...
Alaska stroked her dogs fur gently, Sitka could barely keep any food down at this point, and Alaska was beginning to worry about the safety of her best friend, and her future pups with the dogs due date coming near...

You see kids, back then they didn't have veterinary clinics or all that fancy jazz.

"Just hang in there ok?" Alaska said gently, her dog whimpering.
The government had been thinking of switching Alaska's capital, which was the presumed reason that Alaska assumed her dog had fallen ill in the first place.
If they switch the capital... I don't even want to think about what would happen...
Alaska choked back tears, talking in a gentle voice to her dog.
"You'll be fine I promise..."
If only it were true...

--Time skip.--

Alaska stared down at Sitka as she struggled to give birth, she had gotten so weak over the last month, Alaska knew she probably wasn't going to make it.
"Shhh... It's ok, relax girl." Alaska hushed, Sitka whimpering at another contraction.
"Y-you need to stay awake ok? You're almost there..."
The dogs's ears were pressed to the back of it's head in pain, her breath hitched and uneven, Alaska stroked her neck gently, attempting to relax her.

What seemed like hours passed, Sitka had been loosing a lot more blood then she should of... Alaska didn't want to admit it, but she was terrified, not wanting to admit that her best friend, who had been with her for all this time, may die.

The first pup slid out along with a spurt of blood, turning the towel red, Sitka shifted, but was unable to lift her head to nip the sack.
Alaska gently ripped open the sack with her hands, the pup wasn't moving, it's body was cold.
He's dead...
Alaska took a deep breath, fighting back tears she stroked Sitka's neck gently. "He's handsome Sitka..."
The dog only grunted in response, her tail twitched in pain.
After a few more minutes the second pup was born, Sitka let out a yelp of pain as blood poured out onto the towel along with the sack containing the pup.

Alaska gently pulled open the sack, a girl this time. She was cold as ice just like her brother.
"It's ok Sitka, your pups are fine... They look so much like you." Alaska whispered hoarsely.

The last one came a mere minute after the last, crimson blood spilled out of the towel, as if to mock Alaska. The red color screaming death.
Alaska hesitantly opened the last sack. It was another boy, he wiggled and cried out lightly, signaling that it was alive. Alaska let out a sigh of relief.
The pup was a dark grey-brown color, just like Sitka.
Alaska nudged the pup over to its mother's belly gently, cutting the chord.
The male snuggled up to its mother, suckling.
Sitka closed her eyes, her breathing very shallow.
"Take a rest Sitka... You're pups are fine, and you will be too..." She said, petting her dog.
She stayed there silent for a few minutes, before she dried off the two pups that didn't make it, grabbing a shovel she took them outside to what had been their mother's favorite spot in the yard, a large oak tree.
She wrapped up their young bodies in cloth and dug two holes in the cold soil, not caring that her hands were burning from the cold.
She set the two pups in the holes, small tears running down her face as she covered them up.
She made sure to change Sitka's bedding, making it as comfortable as possible.
She later made two tombstones for the pups. Placing them at their graves.
Sitka will be ok... She won't die.

--Time skip--

Three days had passed since the incident. Sitka couldn't eat anything, nor could she get up.
Alaska had to resort to bottle feeding the wolf pup after Sitka could no longer make milk. She was like a living corpse, on the edge of falling to her death.
Sitka's going to be ok... She's going to be ok...

The next day she received a notice that the government had officially switched her capital to Juneau.

Sitka passed that night peacefully in her sleep, happy that at least Alaska would have someone new to comfort her...
Russia came over to comfort Alaska after Sitka's death, he and America helped make a grave for the capital.
Alaska was kneeled in front of Sitka's grave, her collar that she had made for Sitka as a child in her hand. The tears wouldn't stop coming, no matter what America or Russia did to try and get Alaska to stop crying.
"Alaska..." Russia hushed, rubbing her back gently.
"You can't keep moping like this... Sitka may be gone but her pup needs someone to look after it... Sitka wouldn't like it if you just kept sobbing like this.
You haven't even given him a name yet."
Alaska took her hands away from her face, her eyes swollen and puffy from crying.
Why must god take everything I love away from me?...
She looked over at the basket which had the little puppy in it, only a few days out she petted its fur gently.
"Juneau..." She decided quietly, "Juneau is his name now... After my new capital."
Russia smiled softly, "good."
"He's so cute." America commented.

Alaska took a deep breath and nodded.
God why do you hate me? What have I done... You've taken away everything I care about, but I won't let you take this...
What's the point in making friend's if they'll just die?
I won't let anyone else into my life except Juneau...
I don't want to be crushed again like twice before. If this was your plan god, I hope your happy.

--Time skip to present.--

A lot had changed in Alaska since then, Juneau had grown up strong, and was not laying beside her desk.
She looked at the wolf bracelet Hawaii had made for her.
I don't want to be hurt again...
She sighed, looking up on her wall, Sitka's dog collar was framed there.
It's almost like your trying to tell me something...
She stared down at the bracelet once again, and then at the letter.
Why?

((It's like my playlist knew I was writing depressing stuff bc sad music was all that played out of my entire playlist.
This was sad man...))
