For The Honor Of Mrs. Burr
As I have mentioned previously, Aaron Burr kept a journal that was addressed to his sister, and he would send it to her periodically. One entry from the summer of 1775 begins:
" . . . none of our acquaintances dead or married lately" with the exception of "your brother Aaron."
Now, before Burr joined the army, he was under a lot of social pressure to get married, but he didn't want to. He didn't like the idea of rushing into a marriage. However, according to the gossips of Elizabethtown, the town in which Burr made residence in the summer of 1775, he had, in fact, been secretly married to a beautiful and wealthy young lady.
This was, of course, not true, but Burr had a difficult time proving it. One gentleman actually challenged Burr to a duel in defence of the supposed "Mrs. Burr's" honor after Burr repeatedly denied her existence.
Burr later did get married, though, to Theodosia Prevost . . . After waiting around for her husband to die first.
