Rescue Exam

When they arrived at the second exam location the rain was pouring, as it usually was. Kaneki summoned a scroll, pulling out a cloak for himself and pulling up the hood. Naruto followed his example, summoning his own cloak from a scroll-like he was taught.

"Here's your first lesson," Kaneki said. "Be prepared, you all knew the exams were being held in Amegakure, known for its constant rainy weather, so you should've been more prepared for the weather. Have fun getting sick."

As if to accentuate his point, Temari sneezed.

"Welcome to the site of one of Amegakure's old apartment complexes, which will be used as the location for this part of the exam," Kaneki said. "Your task is fairly simple, you must rescue the civilians on-site in a timely manner while fighting off enemy shinobi."

On cue, the fifteen ANBU who were seen with Kaneki reappeared, plus one extra person. A teen girl with long white-hair stood next to the ANBU named Ume.

"I'll elaborate a bit since I'm the one who made this test up." She said. "You'll have an hour to save as many people as you can, all while fighting off the ANBU. No lethal moves are permitted for ANBU or genin, and you will be able to earn extra points, however, we will not tell you how you can get extra points."

"We have to save people and fight ANBU?" Choji asked.

"Yes," Kaneki nodded. "But I've instructed them to only use chunin level attacks, they'll be going easy on you."

"Also," Kana added. "Working together is allowed, do what you have to in order to pass!"

"Good luck," Kaneki said. "You get a 20-second head start, then the ANBU will come after you."

Everyone stood still for a moment, only the Otogakure genin moved, running into the disaster zone without warning.

"Do we start?" Sakura asked.

"15 seconds until the ANBU get sent in!" Kaneki exclaimed.

The genin scrambled inside, everyone going their separate ways. Only the Konoha and Suna genin stuck with each other.

"To the right!" Naruto exclaimed. "I smell people!"

The Konoha genin veered right, heading towards a large chunk of what used to be an apartment complex.

"Naruto, since we don't have Kiba with us I'll leave finding the civilians to you," Shikamaru said. "Neji, Hinata, go to the front and back of the group, use your Byakugan to scout for enemies."

"All right!" Naruto exclaimed.

"Got it!" Neji and Hinata echoed.

"Sakura, Ino, I'm going to leave injuries to you," Shikamaru continued. "If any of us get hurt in battle or if we come across anyone who's injured it'll be up to you too."

"But I only know very basic first aid!" Sakura interjected.

"Me too!" Ino added.

"That's as good as we're going to get right now, you two have begun to study medical ninjutsu," Shikamaru sighed. "No one else here has that knowledge."

"What should Shino, Choji and I do?" Tenten asked.

"You'll be our midrange fighters, focus on keeping the ANBU away from us." Shikamaru said.

"What about us huh?!" Kankuro huffed.

"I thought you three would go off on your own," Shikamaru sighed. "What a drag... Temari, blow anyone who gets too close away, Gaara, you're on defence, use long-range sand attacks if necessary. And Kankuro... You can join the defensive or long range team. Any complaints?"

No one spoke up.

"Good," Shikamaru huffed. "Naruto, are we close?"

"Yeah!" He exclaimed. "Should be there in about a minute at this pace!"

"This'll be a piece of cake!" Tenten chirped.

"Don't celebrate yet, one of you has already been taken down."

The genin came to a dead halt, turning back to see who had spoken to them. An ANBU wearing a tiger mask held a sword to Hinata's neck.

"Hinata!" Naruto exclaimed.

"I-I'm sorry," Hinata mumbled. "H-he grabbed me b-before I could say anything... He... He's f-fast."

"So," The ANBU said. "What'll it be? Fight and rescue your comrade, or continue your mission?"

"Dammit," Shikamaru sighed. "What a drag..."

"J-just go!" Hinata exclaimed.

"We can't just leave her Shikamaru!" Naruto exclaimed.

"Alright, everyone listen up and gather around me," Shikamaru said. "I may have a plan."

~~~~~
"Wow, he's like a chunin already..." Kana said, watching from her perch in the trees.
"Don't you remember him?" Kaneki asked, glancing over at her.
"I think so," Kana hummed. "Wasn't he the boy I fought in the last chunin exams?"
"Yeah, that's him." Kaneki nodded.
"Damn, if his opponent wasn't me he probably could've made chunin already." Kana chuckled. "That makes me feel a little bad."
"Don't be," Kaneki shrugged. "Just because someone is smart doesn't mean he can slack off when it comes to combat ability."
"I suppose you're right," Kana nodded. "I'm curious as to what he plans on doing."
"Then let's sit back and watch," Kaneki said. "I'm curious as well."
~~~~~

"Are you alright?" The only remaining Oto genin asked.

The woman he was helping up nodded. "Only a few scratches, but I don't know where my daughter Fumi is."

"How old is she?" He asked. "Can you show me roughly how tall she is?"

"Okay," The woman replied, holding her hand up to about her chest height. "She's 10, about this tall."

The masked boy nodded, taking a few minutes to look this way and that way. After a minute he stopped, pointing off to the right.

"She's over there, I'll go and get her," He said, glancing at the woman. "Stay put, I'll be back."

The woman bobbed her head in agreement, her eyes sparkling in awe. "Are you some kind of sensor type shinobi?"

"Not quite..." He mumbled, turning his back. "Now wait here."

He took off towards the girl, swiftly avoiding a pair of hands that reached out of the ground in an attempt to grab his ankles. He reached for his sword to retaliate but decided against drawing it. He ran for only a minute or two before he found the young girl, sitting in what appeared to be some kind of pitfall.

"Are you Fumi?" He asked, his voice dull and monotone.

"Yeah!" She exclaimed, her eyes lighting up. "Did you find my mom?"

"I did," He nodded, sliding into the pit. "I will take you to her, climb onto my back."

"Okay!" Fumi smiled, climbing onto his back.

"Hold on to me," He warned her. "I'm going to jump."

She tightened her grip and he took that as a sign that she was ready. Like any half-decent shinobi, he leapt out of the pit, landing gracefully on his feet.

"Stop right there!" A masked woman exclaimed, the mask of a bird fastened to her face. "I won't let you go any further!"

The masked Oto genin put Fumi down, ushering her behind me.

"Close your eyes," He whispered, gripping the hilt of his sword. "I use lightning style, it could hurt your eyes."

Fumi grabbed the back of his cloak, squeezing her eyes closed tightly.

The ANBU grabbed her own weapon, a short sword. She then charged at him, using a decent amount of speed. There was a bright flash, a muffled yelp, and then a click.

"You can open your eyes now," The boy said. "And don't worry, I just shocked him into unconsciousness."

Fumi opened her eyes, staring at the older boy in awe. "You're like super strong!"

The Oto genin nodded. "Climb on, I'm going to run the rest of the way."

Fumi climbed onto his back, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Okay!"

~~~~~
"Is that Zetsu over there?" Kana asked, peering off into the distance.
"Definitely," Kaneki sighed. "What the hell is he doing here?"
"I couldn't tell you," Kana sighed back. "But look at him, he's watching that guy from Oto awfully close."
"None of this sits right with me..." Kaneki said, crossing his arms.
"Me neither," Kana huffed. "But we can't do anything right now. Pulling Zetsu aside and asking him what business he has with that Oto genin will only make us look bad. What if he's plotting something?"
"Zetsu has been vanishing a lot lately," Kaneki hummed in thought. "He's never out on a mission, but he isn't ever around."
"I'll ask Pein about this later," Kana decided. "I'll let you know what he says tonight."
"Good," Kaneki replied. "Now let's go back to watching, I'm interested in what the Konoha and Suna genin will do about their captured friend."
"I suppose we'll just have to worry about Zetsu later," Kaneki sighed. "Though knowing our luck shit is bound to hit the fan sooner or later."
"Don't jinx it," Kana sighed. "But I fear that you may be right."
The two fell silent, turning their attention back to the genin fighting below them.
They'd worry about this later.
Here's a chapter for y'all to enjoy for the moment. I probably won't be publishing anything else for a while as I'm in the process of recovering from a virus I caught, so enjoy this in the meantime.
