Chapter 57.
"Jail?" I breadth out, heart beginning to race.
How did this happen? How is it possible? Zayn? In jail!
"It wasn't suppose to happen." He sighed. "The race was about to end and cops just showed up. Someone snitched. A lot of us got away before they caught us. Zayn just wasn't lucky. They're holding him back for questions."
I threw my sheets out of my legs, jumping out of the bed to make contact with the warm carpet floor. My phone was still kept pressed against my cheek and shoulder.
"Okay, well what should I do? Where are you?" I asked racing towards my closet.
"Well, um, we got caught too."
"What!" I exclaimed, stopping what I was previously doing. "So you're all in jail?"
"Sort of?"
"What do you mean?" I furrowed my eyebrows.
"Since we weren't racing, they held us back as witnesses. Zayn's the one that's in big trouble."
I sighed, knowing the information sounded a lot like Zayn.
I started searching through my hangers to find something more appropriate to wear. I can't leave him there. I'm going to bail him out.
"Okay, well, I'll be there as soon as possible."
"Thank you." He replied.
"Don't mention it." I quickly hung up, launching my phone over to my bed as I pulled out a denim jacket and a pair of black jeans.
Quickly, I changed those clothes over what I was already wearing, a grey v neck and underwear. I passed a quick brush down the length of my hair before grabbing my white vans and plopping them on. My eyes scurried the room in search for my bag. I spotted it after a quick turn on my desk. The next thing I did was grab it before going up to one of my drawers and digging to the bottom where I pulled out a debit card. My father gave one of these to both Kennedy and I and claimed we only use it for emergencies only. This is an emergency. Though he never told us how much was on, I'm sure it's just enough. You've got to be prepared for anything, right?
I shoved the card in my bag, grabbing my phone and carefully opening the door of my room. Kennedy was in my parents room, of course. I couldn't let myself get caught. She'll go crazy if she finds out they got caught and now Zayn's in jail. I'm risking that, therefore, she can't know I'm leaving.
The door was gently closed, feet making careful footsteps down the stairs. I was about to exit the house when I remembered, I have no ride. It's too late to call a cab, I need to get there before no one bails him out and has to stay there over night. And the nearest bus stop is miles away as well as a subway.
My head turned around to spot Kennedy's car keys. God, I hated this. Going behind my own sister like that, not to mention, basically steal her car. But I had to, I had nothing else to do. My legs sprinted towards the table it was on, grabbing it in my fist and walking out.
***
The car door slammed closed. I started sprinting towards the front door of the quiet police station Harry told me they were in. I've never been in one of these stations, ever. This is a first for me and trust me, I can only imagine how lost I'm going to be.
I swung the heavy door open, entering into the cold bright room. Sounds of phone ringing and printers running were heard all around. My eyes looked around but stopped to land on three guys, all seemed above the age of 30, with handcuffs in their wrists. They were scary alright, all tattooed with a few piercings on their face. I don't know what was going on but they all gave me this scary look. I felt scared, trust me, even if I was supposedly safe with all these cops around. I was completely lost.
"May I help you?" I heard the sound of an even older male speak behind me.
I turned around and was right. He stood behind a huge, thick looking bullet proof glass. I looked around, just to make sure he was talking to me. I walked up to him, placing my arms on the arm rest and sighing. I looked so nervous that I wouldn't be surprised if they suspected I was up to no good.
"Actually, I'm looking for a guy." I answered. "Well, make that a group of people.."
He looked down at the papers in front of me, already giving me a bad look. "Oh. So you're with those kids, huh?"
"Look, I'm just here to get my friends." I was already mad of people always getting like this when they refer to them as them..
The man in the officer's uniform looked again back down at his papers. "They're held back for questions."
"Yeah I know that. And I want to get them out." I replied.
I waited and waited for an answer. Finally, he did.
"Ma'em I'm going to have to ask you to please take a seat." He pointed behind me.
"You don't understand, I need to see them now! "
"And I need a break." He laughed. "Honey, we all need something we can't have. Now, take a seat."
I got so angry. I wanted to let my anger out on him but then remembered what Zayn told me to do.
"Sometimes you just have to close your eyes, count to ten, take a deep breath, remind yourself that you wouldn't look good in prison stripes and just smile at the dumbass and walk away."
That's exactly what I did.
"Okay." I smiled sarcastically. "Thank you."
I held my fist tightly in my grasp when I turned around, slowly walking towards the seats they had open in the waiting room. I was yet to promptly take a seat when I heard some cops start shoving a man over towards what I think was the place where they locked them up. I sighed, pulling out my phone to see I had been officially caught by Kennedy. 4 missed calls, 3 voicemails, and 15 text messages; all saying the same thing: You're so dead. I closed my eyes, thinking of everything going on. Zayn would do the same for me if I was ever in this situation. I know he will, actually, he'll do more than just that. Who knows what he'll do. Which is why I'm here. I have to get them all out and get Zayn so then I can talk to him out of ever pulling another stunt like this.. Ever.
I sat there for the next five minutes staring at my phone. Finally deciding to send her a quick message saying I'm really sorry and turning it off.
I knew this was going to take a while, but I didn't think it'll come by this quick before I heard one f the doors slam widely open, a group of people walking out between two cops.
"Move!" A man's voice sounded, pushing one of them forward.
I looked up with eyes wide awake now. It was just who I hoped it to be.
"Hey watch it, Man!" Louis complained, turning his head around.
My body raised from the seat, trying to get a better look if what was happening.
"Do you want to go back?" The cop argued, "This time in jail?"
Another figure stepped in, this one looking very much like Liam.
"C'mon mate." He patted Louis's back. "Forget him."
"Why are we out anyways?" Harry asked turning towards the cop.
This time I didn't stop for anything, hurrying my way over to where they were. Vanessa noticed me right away.
"Paige!" She smiled, rushing up to me.
Before I got the chance to say anything, she swung her arms around me, embracing me tightly in joy of seeing me.
"What on earth are you doing here!?" She exclaimed pulling away.
I was going to tell her I knew about everything but her notified beat me to it.
"That'd be because of me." He spoke nervously, shaking the back of his curly brown hair.
Vanessa turned around, her expression changing completely.
"What!"
"We had no one else to call." He added, "I wasn't going to waste our only phone call on someone who wouldn't bother to come. We were all here."
"Well what is Zayn going to say? Paige was the only person he strictly wouldn't want to know." She furrowed her eyebrows, walking back towards him.
I can tell Harry knew what he's done with his friend. But I'm actually glad he told me, why wouldn't he. It's true.. I mean, not that I know of, but these people only stick with each other. They've never spoken about someone else and now since they were all here, who else would they call?
"Don't worry about Zayn." I tried to make him feel guilty because he wasn't. "Thank you, Harry, for calling."
He gave me a small smile, carefully nodding his head. I smiled back before walking closer towards them. The only one with handcuffs was Louis. I wouldn't be surprised, he's probably the second most stubborn one out of all of them after Zayn. Harry at least has Vanessa, and Liam and Niall were always quiet and very calm.
I finally walked up next to them. The cop looked at me before looking down at the cuffs he was about to release from Louis's wrist.
"Are you the one here for them?" He asked.
I nodded. "Yes."
He looked back at Louis with an angry look in his face. "Good luck with this one, he's a bit of a loud mouth."
I ignored him and grabbed Louis's forearm after he was released. Surprisingly, he pulled me into an embrace and went down to my ear. "Why did you come?"
I looked up at him, body still trapped in his hold. "I wasn't going to leave you guys here."
He hugged me one more time, this time a little bit harder. After a small moment, I pulled away, looking at all of them with wide eyes. I was almost done here.
"Where's Zayn?" I asked looking at all of them.
They looked at each other, almost scared to tell me the truth.
"Guys!" I called out desperately.
"Uh.." Liam continued.
I sighed, noticing the cop who handed them to me was now gone. I guess this means I have to back to the idiot in the front desk.
"Excuse me." I continued. "I'm missing one of the people I came to look for."
He sighed, tired eyes looking back down at the papers in front of him. "What's this person's name?"
"Zayn. Zayn Malik." I answered standing in my tippy toes to try and get a glimpse of his list.
"Zayn Malik, huh?" He flipped some more pages, finally stopping at his name. "Yep, he's like a member here, always getting into trouble as you can tell. He's is locked up. He ain't getting out until his sentence is over. He was breaking the law."
"Please, is there someone I can talk to? I can't leave him here." I begged, bottom lip beginning to shake.
"Let me guess, you're the girlfriend?" He looked at me in a joking way.
"I'm sorry but I think that's none of your business." I furrowed my eyebrows in annoyance.
I was about to lose it, that's when Louis came in behind me and started to talk to him.
"Look, we just want to get our friend out. The girl wants to know what she can do to help and this is how you treat her? No, I don't think so. Listen, I know people and I think you'll like to keep your job.. officer.." He looked at him in a devious way as he looked down at his badge. "Bennett."
The officer looked at him in an angry way. "Are you threatening a cop, sir?"
"Well I'm not complimenting him." He smiled.
I felt the tension in the room.
"Wait!"
Swiveling my way back out towards in front of the glass in front of the officer, Louis took stand still behind me. I looked down at my purse, digging into it to slap my father's emergency debit card out in front of him.
The officer looked down at it and then back up at me in a tempting way.
"Please. Just name your price." I begged.
He looked back up at me and remained still. God, please help me.
***
The doors slowly opened. Two cops starting to walk out. I waited impatiently to see what was happening.
Finally, I saw him.
He wasn't handcuffed but still very highly watched over. His face was all swollen up, he was given some heavy beating in there. I could only just imagine. His bottom lip had a small cut in it, head looking down with an angry look on his face. He wasn't in a prison suit, I'm glad they let him change. Seeing him like this only broke my heart. He doesn't deserve any of this and it makes me furious that that's exactly what he gets.
"Move it asshole." A cop behind him shoved him forward.
He stopped once he saw me and his friends on the other side of the doors. His expression seemed a little embarrassed, surprised even that I was here.
He was finally out and the cops gave us space to go up to him. I was the first one to run up to him. My body crashed into his butt he didn't fight it. Instead he hugged me back. I looked up, bringing my arms up to wrap around his neck. I couldn't stop myself from giving into him. Our lips crashed, slowly brushing against each other's in a gentle kiss. I was afraid to harm him. His large hands slowly came up to rest upon my hips, pulling me tighter for more connection.
For the first time in a long time, I didn't mind the people around us. I was just glad to finally see him again.
My eyes fluttered open, slowly moving away from his lips but still remaining in his hold.
"What are you doing here?" He looked guilty.
"Do you actually think I'll let you spend 20 days in prison? That was your sentence, you know that, right?" I moved my head in encouragement. He knew exactly what I was talking about.
"I could've handled it." He looked down to drop his gaze on the necklace around my neck.
I shook my head, rolling my eyes as I tried to make him look back up at me. "I know you could but I wasn't going to just leave you? I got the call and I answered it." I brought my hand to touch the side of his face, thumb gently tracing the top of his cheekbones.
"Who called you?" He asked beginning to get mad.
"That doesn't matter right now." I shook my head before kissing his lips again.
He was speechless towards me right now. All he did was stare down at me as if I was an alien sort of speak. I started looking back towards the lips, noticing the cut again and really bringing it to my attention.
"You fought didn't you?" I looked at it.
"The guy they put me with had a history with me. Nothing too serious but he wasn't happy when he saw my face."
I felt as if I could feel the pain he felt when all that was happening to him. I looked back down, holding on to our embrace and breathing out, "I hope he looks worse." I closed my eyes.
The small vibrations of his deep laugh was felt on the right side of my cheek. Warm lips kissing the to of my head as I felt him smile. "Don't worry, he does."
It became silent between us once again before we heard Louis and the rest of the guys, including Vanessa come up to us.
"Welcome back buddy." Louis patted his back as I moved to the side of his right arm. Zayn still held me close to him.
Zayn only laughed at his ways. "Louis, I was only gone for a few hours."
"I know and it could've been longer if it wasn't for your girl." He smiled.
Zayn's expression changed gradually, eyes looking down at me with curious eyes.
"What is he talking about?"
Oh no.
"I'm talking about how she bribed the officer into letting you go." Louis spoke excitingly.
Zayn looked back down at me with a look as if he knew what was going on but didn't want to believe him.
"Uh Louis.." Harry nodded in a way to get him to stop.
"You bribed the officer?" He furrowed his eyebrows.
There was no hiding now. "Yes."
His arm came off from around me. He was getting angry.
"W-Why?" He exclaimed. "Why would you do that, Paige?"
"It was your only way out!" I called back.
"How much did you give him?" He asked sturdy. "Tell me."
"$2,000 dollars." I looked down, my shoes becoming suddenly very interesting.
"Paige.."
"Okay, don't fight!" Liam broke in. "I can't stand seeing you guys like this."
I looked back up, Liam's words catching my attention. It caught Zayn's attention too.
"I know I shouldn't be getting into this but enough is enough." He looked at Zayn. "Mate, don't you see what this girl is going to help you? She just bailed you out of jail! Who ever does that for you? Not us I'm sure, you'll kill us. Harry called her over because he knew she would come when no one else would. I can't believe you don't see the most genuine girl standing in front of you? Stop arguing when she's only trying to be a good girlfriend!" This was the first time I ever saw him angry. I didn't know he could.
Zayn stood quiet, letting his words sink in. We all gave him a moment. Shortly after, he looked up at me and sighed. Anyone could see the sorry in his face.
"I-I'm sorry." He breathed out in deep puffs of air.
I didn't even take his apology. I know he didn't mean to go out like that. I know him too well already. He came back to take me under his arms, kissing my forehead slowly before moving towards my lips.
"I'm sorry." He whispered again. "I'll pay you back, I promise."
He kissed my lips but I shook my head, moving back out to look him in the eyes. "Stop. You're not going to pay me. It's like saying you're paying me to be your girlfriend. I'm not letting you."
He remained still for a moment before his pink lips curved into a small smile. "What did I ever do to deserve you?"
He kissed my lips once more before looking back at his friends.
"I'm sorry, Liam. You're completely right. It's just.. There's a lot going on right now and,--"
"Say no more." Liam smiled.
"He's right." Harry added. "I think we've had enough for one night."
Zayn nodded as well as the rest of us. "Let's just get out of here." He looked down at me.
"But you're coming with me.."
