day three (1).
Nam Hyeju was in a state of frenzy.
While spending a good three hours figuring out her outfit and getting ready with a rush of panic, she had to figure out how to just do this. Originally, the plan for today was to have a nice, delicious lunch with Dr. Lee and Seongwoo, that was it. However, that was suddenly changed with the unexpected talk she had with the doctor himself.
The two men were going to leave for the night, after a good hour of enjoying their cheesecake and chatting with Hyeju (and eventually Akiko after finishing her shift). The redhead was waving her goodbyes to them, a very joyous smile to her round face. But not even a minute later, the doctor waltzed back into the restaurant without his younger friend.
Before Hyeju can let out a word, the man beat her to it. And much to her surprise, he spoke to her in Japanese. "Hyeju-chan, I have a favor to ask you!" She looked at him curiously, both for the change in language and for the mysterious favor. "Honestly, earlier today, I had a talk to one of the main doctors at my hospital and she told me I need to stay in longer tomorrow because there will be a lot of surgeries I need to help with. I will be busy, like, the whole day."
The girl frowned, quickly piecing together what sounded wrong with his statement. "But, you were the one to invite me for lunch. Did you forget about work? Shall we cancel it?"
Dr. Lee waved his hand at her, dismissing the idea. "No, that's where the favor comes in! I want you to entertain Seongwoo tomorrow since I won't be able to. There's a good chance I might have to stay overnight at the hospital too."
After a few more pleads from the doctor, Hyeju absentmindedly agreed to the favor. At that moment, she was sure that the words had slipped out of her mouth without her own permission. She couldn't even rebuttal with anything because Dr. Lee had thanked her with a newfound joy and left the shop. And just as he left, a small pit of panic swelled into her gut.
Hyeju was at a loss of words.
Just her... and Seongwoo together alone?! Will she ever be able to survive such a day? She doesn't think she'd be able to make it out alive due to her excessively beating heart every second she's with him.
Luckily, Akiko had been listening in to their conversation after the doctor left. Hyeju decided it was a good time as any to tell Akiko everything from her small crush on Seongwoo to the talk with the doctor about their one-on-one. Comments of destiny and wishes coming true were thrown in there, and Hyeju may have rambled on a bit over the predicament, but her friend seemed to get the gist.
And what did Akiko tell her?
To just go with the flow, to just let things happen naturally. That she shouldn't have to worry about the day with Seongwoo and act just like the Hyeju she knew.
Akiko suggested that Hyeju should invite the boy to watch her university tennis match if he so desires to. And if not, the two can go off to do whatever they wanted, like show him better sights in Japan. The older girl assured her that it was more than okay to not watch her match this time around, as Hyeju had done a fantastic job of visiting her previous matches like the great friend she was.
"Besides, don't you think this would be the perfect chance to act like this would be your date with him? Don't miss that opportunity, Hyeju-chan."
That.
Akiko's words had been warming Hyeju's mind ever since she said them. Date? The more she thought of it, the more psyched out she was.
She knew damn well that this wasn't a date, but for it to kind of be it? It was got her brain swirling. She just doesn't want to look stupid in front of the guy! She won't be able to live if she embarrassed herself in front of Seongwoo. And to think of this as a date when they clearly met only two days prior? That was a long stretch! She shouldn't remotely think of it that way.
Maybe just pretend she'll be his tour guide for the day.
"Hyeju, come on, don't be like this," the redhead uttered to her reflection on the full body mirror just in front of her bedroom door.
She dressed pretty well for the chilly day. She wore a simple white buttoned shirt inside of the checkered dress she had. She matched those with thick, navy leggings, lace boots, a pink overcoat, and a black beanie. It was an upgrade from her usual lazy style of jeans and a thick sweater, but she had to kick it up a notch for Seongwoo.
Staring longer at the reflection, she clicked her tongue in annoyance. "Yah, Hyeju, didn't we agree this wasn't a date? Why did you dress up so damn much?" Hyeju grumbled with a pout. "Should I change into pants?"
Her eyes glimpsed over to her alarm clock that settled on her nightstand.
It was like an electric shock.
"Shit, I'm going to be late!" Dr. Lee had told her last night as well that she should meet with Seongwoo in front of the Lucky Cat at noon! And what time was it? Just five minutes before their meeting time! In a flustered rush, Hyeju grabbed her necessities and scrambled out her small, cheap apartment, running as fast as lightning to their meeting destination.
. . .
Seongwoo had woken up the next morning, around 10:25 to be exact, to find out this sudden surprise. He had expected to see his hyung, up and shifting about in the apartment, probably making a quick breakfast for the two of them. But no, he woken up to an odd silence. And as Seongwoo managed to get himself up to get himself water to drink, it was then he noticed the bright green post-it note stuck in front of the refrigerator door:
Hey Ong! Slight change in plans, but I had been called in to work the WHOLE day today, how crazy is that?? But anyway, you should go and still have fun with Hyeju! She's a nice, friendly girl, so I trust her to keep you company for the day. I'm sure you two will have an awesome time ;) Since you know where the Lucky Cat is now, meet her there at 12!
Don't miss your favorite sunbae too much! I'll see you later... maybe.
From, Eunhyuk
It was kind of unbelievable... but thrilling at the same time.
Seongwoo had thought he and Hyeju had gotten a little bit closer after last night. She had been such a joy to talk to and they eventually became comfortable with each other. Just like Eunhyuk, he was sure he could trust in the girl too. Also, it was a plus to be able to see her cute reactions...
He checked the time again and he nearly choked on the water he gotten a glass of. He needed to take a shower still and prepare for the day. With that in mind, he rushed off to get ready for his day out with Hyeju.
His heart skipped a beat just imagining it.
Seongwoo had to pat himself in the back for preparing in personal record time. He crossed his arms over his chest to fight off the cold outside as he waited in front of the familiar ramen place. Today felt like it was colder than yesterday, so hopefully they will go somewhere fairly warm for their anticipated lunch.
He scratched the back of his head as he thought.
He seemed a little too excited for being at their meeting spot on time. Hyeju wasn't here yet. He should've played it off and arrive five minutes later at least?
Nah, if Hyeju had been here, he wouldn't have wanted her to wait in these freezing temperatures on her own.
This was okay. He was okay with this.
"Seongwoo-sshi!" His ears perked up at the sound of a female voice calling out for him. He turned, an automatic smile to his lips when he saw the redheaded lass bolting over to where he stood. Once she met his side, she collapsed with her hands to her knees, breathing heavily. Seongwoo had to chuckle in admiration. Did she really run the way here because she was late?
How cute...
Hyeju straightened up once she caught her breath and she grinned back at him, a bit strained from her exhaustion. "I'm so, so sorry. I lost track of time, I didn't mean to make you wait!"
"Ah, no. I actually just got here. You didn't have to run. I wasn't going to go anywhere." It was a lie, he might as well not make his savior feel worse. "And ah, I have to apologize on my friend's behalf because he won't be able to join us for today. Apparently, he got some doctor duties to do." He hesitated. "Hopefully, it won't be too awkward with just me today?"
She quickly waved her hand at him dismissively. "No, of course not! This is fine. Completely fine."
Her cheeks were as red as her hair again.
Mindlessly, he reached over and pinched her cheeks. At this, Hyeju lightly gasped at his actions. Seongwoo then realized what he was doing. This wasn't the time to be pinching a girl's cheek when they've only met for a couple days! What was he thinking?? To save himself, he gestured that they might as well go ahead, pointing his thumb behind him. "Shall we go eat? I'm starving! I hope you got a delicious place in mind."
Much to the boy's relief, Hyeju proceeded to nod her head, looking to have not minded the prior cheek pinching... even when her cheeks seem even redder than before. "Yes, since it's cold out, I think we should go get some *sukiyaki! There's a restaurant we can go to that's close to my campus, if that's alright?"
{*A/n: Sukiyaki is a dish in which meat and vegetables are stewed in an iron pot. It focuses a lot on the beef added into it~ }
"Of course, today, I follow after you, Hyeju-sshi."
The two hurried over to the nearest bus stop and rode over to the restaurant. Thankfully, Seongwoo gotten over his dumb mistake and was able to chat to Hyeju casually. He asked her questions about her own life as he had been mildly curious. Hye basically told him her whole reason of being in Tokyo.
She was from Busan and currently was attending Kosin University to get a degree in architecture. When she was 16 years old, she took interest in learning the Japanese language after getting tired of reading Korean subs for her favorite animes, which lead her to minor in Japanese. And while she learned, she was able to be a part of a study abroad program that allowed her to have the opportunity to attend Tokai University, which has a good following for students wanting to learn to be an architect. And here she was, living the dream to both attend Japan and work towards her dream job.
Hearing Hyeju talk so animatedly about her school projects for architecture, it really opened Seongwoo's eyes. Now, this was what a passionate person looks like when they're striving towards something they so desired. It was the same kind of enthusiasm and joy Eunhyuk had whenever he talked about his previous days at the hospital, spewing story after story of his adventures as a doctor in training.
There was a spectacular kind of sparkle in Hyeju's eyes as she spoke about certain ideas about buildings and structures she wanted to create. The pure adoration and exhilaration, it was so damn obvious that Seongwoo could feel himself getting excited just listening to it all. It was just amazing how much it made him want to root for her to get to that dream to be a top-notch architecture who will be praised and awarded for her work.
He wanted to have the same feeling. Seongwoo knew he won't have this same kind of effect if he were to continue on being a med student.
"Oh gosh, this is our stop already," Hyeju murmured as she abruptly stood up from their seat at one particular stop. "Come on, Seongwoo-sshi!" He was quick to trail after the shorter out of the bus and to the sidewalk where significantly more people around their age were walking about. It made sense, they were near her university after all, this would be a place where a lot of young people would hang out around. "Jesus, I'm sorry. I literally talked throughout the whole ride over here."
Seongwoo beamed at her, "Don't be sorry! I enjoyed listening to you talk. You sound so determined to be an architect that it got me hopeful."
She looked at him out of curiosity. "Hopeful?"
"Yeah." They were walking again, hopefully to the sukiyaki place. "Since you told me about your dream, I should tell you mine... I really want to perform."
When he peered over at Hyeju, he wasn't quite expecting the look of awe on her face. In a way, it made him feel giddy seeing the reaction. She gaped, "Oh my gosh, like singing and dancing? Or maybe an actor?"
He nodded, "Yeah, kind of all of the above. I've always liked making people laugh and happy and I could do that by performing. So, I've grown to really like the idea of being an idol, you know?"
"Seongwoo-sshi, that's so cool!" There was a brand new twinkle to her eyes as she gazed at him. Something that told him that those weren't empty words, it were something of worth and truth. Hyeju was genuinely thrilled for him that he wanted to pursue being an idol.
It has been a while since someone encouraged him to openly admire a dream.
"Thanks, but it's not going to happen."
His reply shocked Hyeju. The initial expression then shifted, looking quite sheepish. "Ah, do you think you're not good enough?"
Seongwoo let out a laugh. "Not at all, I think I'm pretty talented."
"Wow," Hyeju scoffed. "That was quite humble of you to say. I really want to see you dance and sing now..." A clap of her hands, she had a sudden idea. "Seongwoo-sshi, shall we go to a karaoke bar later? I have to see for myself if you're cut out to be an idol... if that's okay with you, of course."
The boy didn't hesitate to give her a nod of his head, a cheery smile to his lips. He thought going to karaoke later would be fun. And he sure will do anything he can to impress the Korean lass.
"Oh yeah, before I forget," Hyeju chimed in. "I mentioned yesterday that I was going to watch Akiko's tennis match. Would you like to watch that too? It's okay if you don't."
"No, no, I think that would be fun too."
The grin on her face was precious. "Fantastic!"
They finally arrived to the restaurant. Upon first walking into the establishment, Seongwoo could already smell the appetizing aroma of the sukiyaki. The steam that rose from customers' bowls got his stomach growling louder. They settled down in a two person table and quickly ordered what they wanted, as they have decided what to get on the bus ride over.
And now they wait for their order to arrive.
Before Seongwoo could ask Hyeju what they should do after their meal, a random voice from behind called out the very girl's name, shocking them both. And as Hyeju peeked over to whoever was basically yelling out her name, her expression changed.
And seeing the boy approach the two of them, one question he had tried to keep hidden in his mind fluttered back to him. And he couldn't help but frown a bit as the Japanese boy he had seen upon first meeting Hyeju finally reached them, greeting her in such a mischievous and casual way. No doubt in mind that they were close.
But, how close were they?
A/n: Wanna One has been releasing things like one by one, and I'm never ready for it.
Also, day 3 part 2 will hopefully come out shortly after this. This chapter is a bit shorter than the last two but I thought it'd be too much if I added more.
