Chapter 13
(Mel's POV)
When I woke up the next morning, it took me a second to remember exactly where I was. I was expecting to see the greenish coloring of my apartment's walls, but instead I was greeted with the brilliant white of Jean's guest room. She had given me a pair of PJ's to wear for the night, which I was thankful for. I swung my feet over the side of the bed, sitting on the edge, mulling over what had happened last night. I ran into Jack in the hallway after having just left the game room where he was before, and he acted strangely then ran off. Apparently he had gotten sick after being perfectly fine just a few minutes before. Then, just after, I had seen two Crys in the hallway at the same time, which shouldn't have been possible. Then, after the movie when I was trying to find my way to this room, I ran into Mark who refused to look at me when we spoke, and after he came back to lead me here, he was wearing a completely different outfit, which all-in-all wouldn't have been that bad if his hair hadn't changed color. The first time I had spoken to him it had been a blood-red shade, but when he came back it was his normal, deep black coloring. And honestly, that just kinda pushed me over the edge. Jean and the guys were keeping some secret from me, and I was going to get to the bottom of it, whether they wanted me to or not.
Walking through the hallway, it seemed as though I was the first one awake. The house was eerily quiet, and the only thing I could hear were my footsteps and my breathing. I made my way to Jean's room after a few wrong turns and knocked on the door, hoping she was awake. After a few moments, the door finally opens to reveal a semi-asleep Jean with messy bedhead.
"Oh, good morning Mel," she yawns slightly with a smile. "I'm surprised you're up so early." She chuckles lightly as if she isn't hiding something from me.
"Jean, we need to talk, can I come in?" I say, getting straight to the point. I can get quiet impatient sometimes, and when that happens I become very passive aggressive and difficult to work with. I hoped to God that Jean answered my questions so we didn't reach that point.
"Uhm, sure? Come on in," she opened the door wider for me and made her way to her bathroom. "Just give me a few to freshen up and we can talk." She smiles kindly as she shuts the bathroom door before I can object. Part of me wants to just go in there and bombard her with questions now but I can respect her needing some wake-up time. I did just kinda wake her up probably much earlier than she normally would be up. I just stood there somewhat awkwardly in the center of her room, waiting for her to come back out. As I waited, I pondered over how exactly I was going to phrase my question and, as usual, decided to just wing it.
"Awe, much better!" She giggles out as she comes out of her bathroom with a towel wrapped around her hair, sitting on top of her head. She was now wearing a pair of black leggings and an overly large T-shirt that looked like one of Cry's shirts that he sold in his store. I took a deep breath and decided to start the interrogation process sooner rather than later.
"Jean, I'm about to ask you a couple of questions, and I need your word that you are going to answer me truthfully, okay?" She cocks her head to the side and looks at me curiously.
"Of course. Why would I keep anything from you? I always will ya the truth," she says as she walks towards her bed. "Have a seat?" She asked kindly. Well, you didn't last night, I thought as I sat next to her.
"Jean, last night when I was wondering around, why did I see two Crys in the hallway?" Jean froze before sighing slumping forward, holding her head. She didn't even seem like she'd tried and denied what I thought I saw. She seemed conflicted but I don't think it was over if or what she wanted to tell me but how to explain it.
"If... if I tell you... can you promise me you won't run away...?" Her voice shrank to a bare whisper as she continued to hold her head. When she did finally look up at me, I could see there was a battle going on behind her eyes.
"Why would I run away?" I said gently, trying to calm her nerves. How bad could the truth be that she thought I was going to leave? I would never just abandon someone I considered a friend! Unless, of course, they told me they were a criminally insane mass-murderer, but I'm pretty sure that's not the case here.
"Okay so... Ya know how a bunch of the different YouTube communities created the different 'dark sides' of each YouTuber?" She pauses for a second, taking a deep breath before continuing not wanting me to actually answer. "What if I told you they were real..?" She bit down on her lower lip nervously. It took my brain a few moments to process what she was saying.
"S-so like... Darkiplier? And Antisepticeye? They're... real? And they're here?" I point down at the floor to emphasize "here". I watched Jean carefully. If they really were here, I mean, that would be so cool. Honestly, there were of a few of the dark sides I liked even more than the actual guys themselves!
"I mean... Yeah but... Not just Danti..." She gave me a sheepish look while running at her neck. "If ya d-don't believe me... I can show you..." From the way she's acting, seems like this isn't the first time she's tried to explain this but it's the first time the person hasn't run off screaming.
"I have enough of my own evidence to believe you. Who else is here?" I asked curiously. I mean, obviously it was whoever Cry's opposite was, but I didn't know what his name was.
"Well, there's Anti and Dark just as you guessed. There used to be a couple others but..." She reaches for her neck as a memory seems to play out in her mind. "One of them isn't allowed back here and the other left for his own reasons..." She was still dazed before she snapped back to the present. "Sorry about that... We also have... Wilford and MadCry," she finishes with a faint blush covering her cheeks.
"Cool, when do I get to meet them?" I asked excitedly. I'd already run into everyone but Wilford, but I wanted to actually talk to them. I mean, come on, this is probably the coolest thing that has and ever will happen in my life! She stared at me in pure shock before excitement seemed to completely consume her surprise.
"Hell yeah!" Cupping her hands together, she screamed out their names. As if there was a fire going on, the four counterparts to three of the six YouTubers I've met pretty much fly through the door. "Hey, guys," Jean waves with a giggle as they look about dumbfounded. I couldn't help but laugh as well at both Jean and the other's behavior.
"Hello," I said, giving a little wave. Immediately all their eyes fell on me. My presence seemed to make them even more confused. I glance about the different faces before me. Anti seemed excited more than shocked, Dark was relieved for some odd reason, Mad seemed to be eying Jean more than me (I'll be asking her about that later), and then I noticed a pink haired fellow staring strongly at me.
"Hiya! I'm Anti! Well mortally that's my name but demonically, I'm Anthony, nice to meet you, Mel!" The moss hair colored Irishman strolled up to me. He seemed like he wanted to give me a hug but held back for my own benefit. To be honest, he seemed a lot like Jack but a bit more unpredictable. Wait, did he just say demonically his name was Anthony? What the Hell??
"Hi, you probably already know who I am. Were you the one I saw in the hallway when I was wondering around yesterday?" I noticed he became slightly embarrassed once I'd asked.
"Heh, yeah, that was me." He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. Stepping up next was well-known and feared Darkiplier himself.
"Hello again Ms. Melanie," he said formally giving me a light wave and the barest of smiles possible. He seemed to be trying though it seemed he was still holding back then again, this is Dark.
"It's just Mel," I say calmly, smiling back. I then turned to the masked man, who was still somewhat staring at Jean. "Based on the mask, I'm going to assume you're Cry's counterpart?" He seems to snap out of his daze and I saw and attempt to smile at me through the small space between his mask and the rest of his face.
"Yeah, I'm MadCry but you can call me Mad. Sorry about that," he gave a light chuckle and held out a hand to shake. I gladly took it, shaking his hand firmly and smiling. They all seemed so nice, which is the complete opposite of what most of the fandom expected.
"Wilford? Come and introduce yourself," Jean called out kindly. I heard a small 'Especially since you've been dying to meet her' come from Dark which just earned a slap on the arm from his boyfriend. The well-known neon pink fellow finally stepped forward into full sight.
"Hi," I said, smiling warmly at him. He almost seemed to be a bit shy, which was not at all what I'd expected. Mad seemed to notice and nudge his shoulder a bit before whispering something into his ear which made him completely light up. Suddenly he walked up to me with much more confidence than before and smiled warmingly before taking one of my hands and kissing it lightly.
"My name is William Wilford Warfstache," he says smoothly. "And I am beyond charmed to finally meet you, Ms. Mel." I giggled and blushed a bit at his action. This wasn't exactly what I was expecting from him either, but it was certainly much more alike the Wilford I knew from Mark's videos. "Now, I was wondering if, by chance, would you mind if I interviewed you sometime? I promise it will not end how my interview with Mark or Sean did." He smiles kindly at me, awaiting my answer. "You can always say no if you wish though, I promise not to push you into anything you wish not to do." I chuckle a bit, but honestly, all I could think about was how proper he sounded. He was actually a gentleman, which was hard to find these days.
"Sure, I don't see why not, since you already promised not to kill me." I respond, shrugging. His already pink eyes seem to swirl with excitement and pure joy, I swear if I didn't know better I would think he was fangirling on the inside or something. I smiled at how happy he had become when I accepted his invitation. "So when is this interview happening?"
"Whenever you wish for it to be, beautiful~" He winks playfully at me, seemingly forgetting we had an audience with us. I felt my face heat up as I blushed again. I got the feeling that he was trying to flirt with me, and I honestly wasn't sure how to react, so I just stayed silent.
I'm sorry if I am coming on too strong, his voice whispered although his lips didn't move at all. He just stared at me with a look of concern and admiration. Please, let me know if I am. I meant it when I said I would not push you into anything you are not comfortable with. That includes how I act and my flirtation towards you. You're just absolutely stunning and I can barely help myself when I'm around you~ His sweet voice cooed into my mind as his expression softened into a gentle and loving one. I couldn't help but stare at him in amazement. How could he be so kind? In all honesty, I didn't mind the flirting, it was sweet, I just wasn't used to it, so I had no idea how to respond.
"Would yer stop being a creep, War?" Anti chuckles a bit bringing Wilford back to reality. "Geez, you're turnin' inta a starer just like Madden over here." He throws his thumb at the said demon. There's a bit of laughter as both of the two, that was called out, start blushing a bit.
"I suggest, you at least let her get dressed before you make any more moves, little brother," Dark says with a slight smile. He seems happy that Wilford had asked me for an interview? I have no idea but I'm glad he did say that. I turn to Jean with a sheepish smile before asking about my clothes.
"Well," she started before Anti interrupted her, sounding a bit like another female and not male. Though I have a feeling this happens very rarely among the five people surrounding me.
"They're in the laundry though if you're doing an interview with War then yer gotta let me dress yer up! Between yourself, Jean and myself, you can make you shine brighter than any sun. Though," Anti glances at Wilford with a smirk. "Some would say you already do~" He winks at him knowingly before turning his full attention back to me. "So, whatcha yer say?!" He bounced anticipatingly awaiting my answer.
"I mean, sure, I guess?" I reply, shrugging again. This entire conversation since these guys arrived has just been me shrugging or blushing. I also know that the second Jean and I are alone, I'm asking her about Mad. I mean, he's staring at her constantly, and she's always blushing when he's around. How much more obvious can it be that two people like each other?
"Finally!" He giggles and does some cute little victory dance. Mad and Wilford were holding back a fit of laughter while Dark just stared at his mate in a loving manner. I felt Jean tap on my shoulder and lean over to me.
"He doesn't get a lot of dress up time around here. He maybe Antisepticeye and all but he was still surrounded by females growing up," she giggles into my ear. "So you just made him beyond happy." I chuckled and watched him jump around. He was so childish and energetic. He seemed like someone I would get along with.
"Well, I wish him luck then. I am incredibly picky," I say turning back to Jean, she better than anyone I was difficult when it to a lot of things, especially clothes. She giggles a bit before finally turning to the guys.
"Okay, well if this interview is gonna happen today then I need you all out! Besides Anti but you know what I mean!" She playfully starts full on pushing the guys out. Mad had left on his own though it seemed as if he only did so because he didn't want to cause her trouble. The two brothers on the other hand.. "I swear if you don't get out now I will KICK your arse out to the Netherlands!" She growled, finally throwing out both of the men before slamming her door shut and locking it. "There we go!" She giggles and flops onto her bed. I just stood there, looking between her and Anti with a smile on my face.
"So... what now?" I question. Anti turns to me with a smile almost as wide as a Cheshire Cat's would be. I couldn't tell if he was scary or absolutely adorable.
"Now the fun begins~," He says as he snaps his fingers, causing an entire makeup studio like things to appear as well as an entire long line of different clothing hanging up on three or four sets of racks. "Now let's see," he strolled over to me and looked me deep in the eyes. "Stunning and ever changing colors, purrrfect~!" He actually purred out as he spun around and went searching for an outfit for me. Jean popped up beside me and guided me to the makeup chair.
"Not what you were expecting from him I'm guessing?" She giggles out as she looked about for some sort of makeup. She was in search of a particular product but holy balls does she have a lot of makeup!
"Not. At. All. He's acting like he's part cat." I reply, watching Anti run around, trying to find something for me to wear. "And please don't put too much makeup on me, I usually don't wear any at all."
"I won't do too much, promise. First, we need to prime your face and do a little foundation?" She twisted the statement into a question. "And he is part cat at times, I swear he just LOVES the attention."
"Yes I do and you can't say shite about because yer the same when the attention comes from Mad," he throws back at her and though I couldn't see his face, I knew he was smirking greatly. I laughed lightly, before deciding this was the best opportunity to ask since I doubted I would ever find Jean completely alone.
"So, do you like Mad?" I ask, not bothering to be subtle about it. She froze in her steps for a moment, which was all the answer I needed but I wanted her to say it. "Jean?" She snapped out of her daze and turned to me with a weak smile.
"It's complicated," she shrugs it off as she finishes up my light makeup. "Just let me add on a bit of gloss. You found something yet, A?" She calls to Anti as she adds on the clear gloss to my lips.
"Almost!" He calls back as he continues his search. Honestly, I just hope it's nothing too out there. I don't usually wear anything that crazy, just a t-shirt, jeans or shorts, and different jackets depending on the weather.
"What does 'complicated' mean?" I ask as my attention returns to Jean. She doesn't look me in the eyes as she reaches for her neck again. What does her neck have to do with any of this?
"How much can you handle...?" She asks just above a whisper before turning her eyes on me. Something behind them said she was broken by something or someone and a strong part of me was hoping Mad hadn't hurt her in some way.
"Jean, what happened?" I asked, concerned. Did something bad happen that she didn't tell me about? Then again, if it involved the dark sides, I guess she couldn't have told me, but I just wanted her to be okay.
"Remember how I told you we had two other dark sides living here some time ago?" She asked point blankly. She had very little emotion in her tone as her eyes glazed over as if she was watching the memories in her head.
"Jean, if you don't want to talk about it, you don't have to," I say quietly. I can see that calling up the memories pained her in some way. She shakes her head and looks at me.
"It's only fair for you to know about our history here..." she mumbled off something that I couldn't hear quite well. "The two other people were VirusCry; Mad and Cry's youngest brother and Lucius; Felix's demonic part. Lucius and Mad were originally a couple though Mad seemed to have had a small crush for me and I had one for him. He never acted on it, mind you, he slowly became one of my closest friends out of the guys. Well, besides Dark/Mark and Anti/Jack for a few reasons. Lucius at first thought it was cute and all but Virus... Virus wasn't all too fond of the idea of anyone being that close to me except him. Virus was obsessed with me though I had only thought of it as a small crush. He was like a little brother to me honestly." She gave me a small smile before all emotion disappeared from her face and her hand rested on her throat yet again.
"One night, Jean was walking back towards her bedroom," Anti came up to us, continuing where Jean had left off. He hugged her by her side and kisses the top of her head all brotherly like. "The rest of us were off doing our own thing; Dark and I had our fun time, our mortals playing games, recording, and being couples and Mad and Lucius were fighting again. Jean was on her phone messaging people and checking out everything she normally does online when he came out of nowhere and slammed her into the wall." He trailed off as he held Jean's hand as she fought back tears.
"He held me by my throat and whispered, 'If I can't have you, no one can...' He had come to the conclusion that Mad was going to take me away from him as if he and I were in some sort of a relationship. That was the first time I ever had to use anyone's full name..." I listen to her in silence, almost wishing I hadn't asked so Jean wouldn't be in this state, but I also knew I was going to figure out at some point.
"Use their full name...?" I ask slightly confused. Anti gave me a sweet smile before answering my question. I wonder if that has to do with Anti saying his name was Anthony...?
"Each demon is born with their full given name and the name they are known for in the mortal realm," he explains kindly. "If someone calls on a demon with their full born given name, they have power over that demon. Though that only happens with... Certain cases such as mates, parents, and Royals..." Before I could ask how any of this connected to Jean since she was none of those, that I knew of, to any of the guys she continued her story.
"Virus had already bitten into my neck when the others arrived. Micheal... Mad nearly killed him when he saw what was going on... From then on, Virus was banished from here and never allowed to return. Lucius soon followed Virus's footsteps but for a whole another reason." She glances strongly into my eyes. "Cheating is one rule we don't allow here, cheating on your partner I mean..." She continues to rub at her neck as if rubbing away some sort of mark that wasn't there. I didn't understand the biting-neck thing, but I didn't want to push. I simply got out of the chair and pulled Jean into a hug, comforting her. I felt tears on my shirt as she lets out a silent sob. "I'm... s-sorry you had to see t-this..." She hiccups with a weak chuckle. "I do really like him... I just... After that... And his fight with Dark... I just... I just don't want him to get hurt anymore because of me..." I hated seeing Jean like this, and I felt I shouldn't push any more than I already was, but still had a few more questions.
"What did the two of them fight about?" I spoke gently, almost as if she was a delicate piece of glass that could shatter at any minute. I felt another pair of arms wrap around both Jean and myself. Glancing up, I notice it was Anti smiling softly at me, mouthing 'Thank you' and he held us both tightly as if we were just another pair of his sisters.
"Dark blamed Mad for what happened to me. He thought had Mad have enough courage to just fess up that he loved me and no longer loved Lucius that Virus wouldn't have done what he did since everyone could tell Lucius had it bad for Virus," she mumbled into my embrace. I suddenly felt myself get angry. I knew it wasn't my place to step in, but I had to say something.
"But that doesn't make any sense! You said Virus was obsessed with you, so how could Lucius liking him change anything? And wouldn't Mad confessing have just made Virus angrier? He probably would have done something worse!" I exclaim. I mean, come on! Isn't Dark supposed to be smart? How could any of this possibly be Mad's fault? I bet he doesn't even know he's the reason Mad and Jean aren't together. That bastard, I wanted to punch him! Though, that wouldn't accomplish much, since I'm pretty weak.
"My mate wasn't in his right mind," Anti spoke up for his mate. "He was furious and damn near lost it when he saw the scene. We all know of Dark's temper and when Mad saw it on the raise... He stood in Virus's place and took the hits..." Jean froze at this as if she didn't know this information.
"W-why...?" Her voice broke as she asked her question. Anti sighed and hugged us tighter.
"He didn't want ta risk him goin' on a rampage through the city for that bastard... He didn't want ya ta see Dark as the bad one even though Virus deserves for what's comin' ta him if I ever see that arsehat again." He growled out as he squeezed one more time before releasing us. "Trust me though, Dark ain't proud of what he did... He didn't know it was Mad until the aftermath which is what yer saw, Jean. Mad made us swear that we'd covered for 'em and say they just got inta a fight and not the truth.." I mean, hearing it, it's kinda made sense but...
"It's still the stupidest bullshit I've ever heard." I hadn't realized at first that I had spoken my thoughts out loud, but know that I have, I guess I have to explain myself. "I mean, Jean should have known the truth! First of all, it makes a hell of a lot more sense than the other bullshit excuse you made, and secondly, in this instance, it seems like hiding the truth cause more harm than sharing it would have!"
"It was a long time ago and ta say Mad and Dark were always smart would be a lie. Trust me, I never wanted ta hide the truth from anyone but Mad didn't want to break the strong relationship Jean and Dark had at the time. I know, it all sounds stupid cuz it is but no one wanted ta listen ta me though I'm the only frooker that grew up with sisters!" He huffed out, it seemed he was attempting to make things lighter and somehow it worked. Jean fell to the ground laughing while Anti and I just stared at her though both of us had a wide smile that she was okay again. I turned to Anti, still smiling about Jean's happiness and chuckling at her actions a bit.
"So what outfit did you pick out for me?" Anti smiles widely and holds up the outfit he had selected for me. On a hanger, he had a pair of light blue skinny jeans, a white tank top with a tangerine color crop top flannel cover that seemed like it would only bring attention to my chest with just a good ol' pair a white converse.
"Whatcha think?!" He exclaimed, almost bouncing in hopes I love the outfit he had selected for me. Jean, finally calming down made a comment saying I'd look hot in it and knew Wilford would just LOVE to see me in it as well. Honestly, it wasn't something I would have ever picked out for myself, but it looked really nice. It would definitely be a change from my usual leggings and loose t-shirt combo. It was high time I switched up my wardrobe.
"It does look very stylish," I answer, smiling brightly. I take the clothes from Anti and head over to Jean's bathroom to change. It was a struggle taking off my PJ shirt and putting on the tank top without smudging the makeup (we should have done that after I changed) but I managed. Once the clothes were on, I gazed at myself in the mirror and god damn did I look stunning. I couldn't remember the last time I'd looked this decent for something. I turned on the sink and got my hand a little wet, then used them to smooth down my slightly frizzy hair. I then smiled brightly and walked out of the bathroom. I had no clue what I had just walked in on next...
"JUST WEAR IT JEAN!" Anti screamed at my friend, who had somehow managed to be on top of her bed canopy. He seemed to be holding a really pretty dark blue dress that was covered in black lace and would probably stop at Jean's knees if she wore it.
"I'M NOT WEARING A DRESS OR HIGH HEELS!" As she screamed this at the demon, I did notice he was holding a pair of six-inch heels but luckily they were a chunky heel and not something super thin. "YOU CAN FUCKING FIGHT FOR ALL I CARE! I AIN'T DOING IT!" She hissed out as she hides further on top of her bed cover. I shake my head at their antics and laughed as I approached.
"I will admit," I said, standing next to Anti. "That the heels seem like a bit too much. However, Jean, that dress would look stunning on you. May I ask why you're trying to get her to wear a dress?" He leaned over and whispered into my ear about a deal that had been made earlier today and the surprise in store for Jean. I smiled happily and nearly jumped around in joy. "Jean, you really should put on the dress. I'll help you find better shoes if you do!" All I received was a growl and some rolling noises of her moving around.
"I swear, if I got ta go get Dark and Mad to get yer arse down here I will and they won't be as nice as I am being!" He threatened playfully though I had a feeling he wasn't joking all that much. She crawled over to the edge of the cover and glared down at Anti.
"I fucking dare you, yer Irish arsehole!" She growled out before softening and looking at me. "I'm not mad at you, Mel. He just always wants to put me in a damn dress."
"Yeah, well, I would very much like to see you in a dress, so can you put it on?" I decided to try puppy dog eyes, even though we'd both shared that it had no effect on either of us. "Pwetty pwease?" She groaned and hid from my eyes though I heard a grumble of words along the lines of 'If you find me some better shoes maybe...' "Okay, well first tell me what you want! I'm not gonna pull out twenty different pairs of shoes!" I chuckle slightly, seeing as my puppy dog eyes seem to have worked.
"No high heels, something comfy..." She whispers as I hear her moving about above us.
"But something still stylish dammit!" Anti piped in happily, knowing he won with my help. He mouthed another 'Thank you' as he set down the dress and began to walk out. "I'll be back shortly with the guys if you don't hurry up!" She growled at him as he left the room.
"Is he fully gone now?" She called out as her head popped out of the top of the bed. She actually looked cute like that, kind of like a bunny or something like that pop their head out to say 'Hi'.
"Yep, he's gone. Are you gonna come to pick out shoes with me? Cause I'm honestly terrible at fashion." I rub the back of my neck sheepishly as I look up at her. "How did you even get up there?" Giggling, she jumped down and just made her way over to the collection of shoes.
"I'm a naturally good climber and I use to do that all the time growing up with these psychos," she shrugged it off. "Are combat boots fine?" She glances at me with a smile, probably hoping I'd say yes.
"I mean, honestly, I'd need to see it first, but as long as they're nice I think it would look cute!" I respond smiling. If only she knew what this was for. She smiled and quickly changed, luckily finishing, just as the door began to open.
