Chapter 5
IN WHICH they find a mirror
AUBERY, HERMIONE, Harry, and Ron were walking along a path with Hagrid, talking.
"Nonsense! Why would Snape put a curse on Harry's broom?" Hagrid asks.
"Who knows? Why was he trying to get past that three-headed dog on Halloween?" Harry asks.
Hagrid turns to them, suspiciously. "Who told you 'bout Fluffy?"
"Fluffy?" Hermione asks.
"That thing has a name?" Ron says.
"Well, of course he's got a name. He's mine. I bought him off an Irish feller I met down at the pub last year. Then I lent him to Dumbledore to guard the..." Hagrid starts.
"Yes?" Aubery asks.
"Shouldn't have said that. No more questions! Don't ask any more questions. That's top secret, that is." Hagrid shakes his head.
"But, Hagrid, whatever Fluffy's guarding, Snape's trying to steal it." Harry reasons.
"Codswallop. Professor Snape is a Hogwarts teacher." Hagrid shakes his head.
"Hogwarts teacher or not, I know a spell when I see one. I've read all about them. You've got to keep eye contact and Snape wasn't blinking." Hermione fires.
"Exactly." Harry nods, even though he had no idea Hermione was talking about.
Hagrid sighs audibly. "Now, you listen to me, all three of you. You're meddling in things that ought not to be meddled in. It's dangerous. What that dog is guarding is strictly between Dumbledore and Nicholas Flamel."
Harry perks up, curious and turns to Ron then back to Hagrid. "Nicholas Flamel?
Hagrid starting mumbling to himself. "I shouldn't said that. I should not have said that.
"Nicholas Flamel." Harry turns to Hermione. "Who's Nicholas Flamel?"
"I don't know." Hermione shakes her head.
Christmas soon began at Hogwarts, with snow falling by the ton. Hermione walks to the Great Hall entrance with her luggage and wearing a scarf as the ghosts are singing Christmas songs.
"Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas. Ring the Hogwart bell. Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas..." They sang in harmony. Hermione looks from the massive Christmas tree as Flitwick uses his wand to put another ornament on the tree to Harry and Ron as they play Chess and walks towards them. Aubery is reading some history books, diligently looking for any thing with Nicholas Flamel.
"Knight to E5."Harry commands, and the Knight moves to its destination. Hermione walks up behind Harry.
"Queen to E5." Ron says, smugly. Hermione watches as Ron's queen goes over to Harry's knight and whacks the knight with her chair. Ron grins.
"That's totally barbaric!" Hermione gasps, shocked.
"That's wizard's chess." Aubery looks up. "I see you've packed."
"See you haven't." Hermione comments.
"Change of plans, my parents decided to go to Romania to visit my brother Charlie. He's studying dragons there." Ron informs.
"It's my parents anniversary, I think they're going to their honeymoon destination. Reykjavik, Iceland I believe. Just the 2 of them." Aubery says.
"Good, you can help Harry, then. He's going to go and look in the library for information on Nicholas Flamel." Hermione says.
"We've looked a hundred times." Ron groans.
Hermione leans over on the table closer to Ron, Aubery, and Harry. "Not in the restricted section. Happy Christmas." Hermione leaves them
Ron looks at Harryand Aubery. "I think we've had a bad influence on her."
"Hey guys!" Eliza, Dean, Neville, and Seamus walk up to the trio.
"Hey!" Aubery smiles.
"Aren't you guys going back home for the holidays?" Seamus asks.
"Nope." Ron shook his head.
"Oh, wizard's chess. Who's winning?" Eliza asks.
"Ron." Harry sourly spoke.
"Well, see you guys after break!" Dean smiles, and the 4 leave.
"Don't come back soon! Have fun!" Aubery laughs.
It is now Christmas morning and under the tree in Gryffindor Tower, it's filled with presents.
"Harry wake up! Come on Harry, wake up!" Aubery and Ron cheer. Harry puts on his glasses and runs out of bed. He then looks down at Ron and Aubery.
"Happy Christmas, Harry." Ron smiles.
"Merry Christmas, Harry!" Aubery smiles.
"Happy Christmas, Ron, Aubs." Harry notices Ron's sweater. "What are you wearing?"
Ron looks down at his sweater. "Oh. My mum made it. It looks like you and Aubery got one too."
"I-I've got presents?" Harry gasps.
"Yeah!" Ron and Aubery nod.
Harry runs down the staircase to see his presents.
"There they are." Ron smiles.
"Here's your guys presents!" Aubery hands them two packages.
"Chocolates? Thanks!" Harry smiles, as Ron mumbled a quick thanks, stuffing his face with chocolate.
"Oh, yeah. On the couch there's my mom's presents to you." Ron adds.
"Thanks Ron!" Aubery and Harry smile, opening their package. They take out 2 sweaters, one royal blue with an gold H on it, and another light blue one with a gold A on it.
Harry sees a note on a present and opens it, reading it out.
"Your father left this in my possession before he died. It is time it was returned to you. Use it well." Harry looks over to Ron and Aubery, who shrugs their shoulders. He then proceeds to open the remaining of his present. He pulls out a blanket-like object
"What is it?" Aubery asks.
Harry looks down at the object. "It's some kind of cloak."
"Well, let's see then, put it on." Ron beckons. Harry then wraps the cloak around his shoulders, making his body invisible
"Whoa!" Ron and Aubery gasp.
Harry looks down at his invisible body. "My body's gone!"
"I know what that is. That's an invisibility cloak." Aubery says, walking in a circle around him. "Wicked."
"I'm invisible?" Harry spins around, looking down at himself.
"They're really rare." Aubery nods.
Ron looks down at the note. "I wonder who gave it to you?"
Harry now was also looking down at the note. "There was no name. It just said use it well."
That night, Aubery couldn't sleep quietly in the dorm. It was empty. Too empty. She decided on getting another book from the large pile on Hermione's bedside, and started researching about Nicholas Flamel.
The next day, in the Great Hall where most of the students, particularly the Weasleys are eating, Harry sits in front of the fireplace.
"Do you like yours, Ron?" George asks, as Ron turns to harry who still sits in front of the fireplace who is very quiet. "Ron?"
"I'll be right back." Ron leaves the table and comes up to Harry. "Want to play chess?"
"No." Harry shook his head.
"Want go and visit Hagrid?" Ron tries.
"No." Harry replies.
"Harry, I know what you're thinking, but don't. There's something not quite right about that mirror." Ron shakes his head. Harry nods and Ron leaves to go back to the table as Harry continues to stare at the fireplace.
"What's wrong with Harry?" Aubery asks.
"I'm not sure." Ron shook his head.
"Maybe I'll go ask him." Aubery jumps up, walking over to the fireplace.
"Alright then." Ron says.
"Harry. You okay?" Aubery questions, sitting next to him.
"Can you wait outside of your dorm room? I have something to show you." Harry asks.
"Of course!" Aubery smiles.
That night, Aubery and Harry curled up together on the couch, both talking about things, as each Gryffindor slowly spaced out, walking to their dorms.
"What is it?" Aubery asks, and Harry took his Invisibility Cloak, draping it over himself and Aubery, as the pair left the common room.
"I was doing some exploring, and I found this mirror, called the Mirror of Erised," Harry explains.
"Oh. What's so special about it?" Aubery asks.
"Here, I'll show you." Harry replies, as he opens a door, and gently closes it. It's a vast, empty room that has a large mirror in the center. Aubery threw the cloak off, and tip-toed tentatively to the mirror.
"Woah." Aubery gasps.
"What do you see?" Harry presses.
"I see- Me. Everyone's so happy. Oh! There you are, standing next to me! My parents are there too. I see all of our friends. We're celebrating something. I'm not sure what it is." Aubery shakes her head, softly grinning.
"Oh." Harry nods. He sits next to Aubery who leans on him, and they sit together, two cousins leaning on each other.
"What do you see Harry?" Aubery asks.
"My parents. Our family." Harry replies. "Why haven't you got a sibling Aubs?"
"Well, you know how my Mom is an Auror right? When she was pregnant with me, she got in an accident, and damaged her stomach area badly. It was a miracle that I survived, and my mom and dad decided that they would keep me, rather than try to have another child, even if I was deformed." Aubery whispers.
"I'm sorry Aubs." Harry says.
"It's fine. You're already like a big brother to me." Aubery smiles.
"Well, if you like, I can call you sister?" Harry asks.
"That would be nice." Aubery nods. They curled up together, and sat there, enjoying the mirror.
"Back again, Harry?" Dumbledore asks, as Harry turns around and stands up, pulling up Aubery. "I see that you two, like so many before you, have discovered the delights of the Mirror of Erised. I trust by now you realize what it does. Let me give you a clue. The happiest person on earth would look into the mirror and see only themself, exactly as they are."
"So, then it shows us what we want? Whatever we want?" Harry asks.
Dumbledore spoke whilst looking at the mirror. "Yes...and no. It shows us nothing more or less than the deepest, most desperate desires of our hearts.
Now you, who have never known your family, you see them standing beside you. But remember this, Harry. This mirror gives us neither knowledge or truth. Men have wasted away in front of it, even gone mad. That is why tomorrow it will be moved to a new home, and I must ask you not to go looking for it again. It does not do to dwell on dreams, Harry, and forget to live." Harry looks back at the mirror, knowing that Dumbledore is right.
"What do you see sir?" Aubery asks.
"I?" Dumbledore seemed to be caught off-guard. "I, see myself holding a pair of thick, woolen socks.
Winter came and left, and soon springtime arrived, as life in Hogwarts became more difficult, as final exams came up soon. The teachers piled more and more homework on the students, making Aubery fall asleep in almost every class.
"Hi, Hedwig." Harry smiles, as Hedwig has just flown down to the table where Harry, Ron, Aubery, and Hermoine are studying.
"Look at you playing with your cards. Pathetic! We've got final exams coming up soon." Hermione shook her head.
"I'm ready! Ask me any question." Ron declares.
"All right, what are the three most crucial ingredients in a Forgetfulness Potion?" Hermione asks.
"...I forgot." Ron mumbles.
"Lethe River Water, mistletoe berries, and Valerian sprigs." Aubery says.
"And what, may I ask, do you plan to do if this comes up in the final exam?" Hermione asks, ignoring Aubeyr.
"Copy off you?" Ron mocks.
"No, you won't! Besides, according to Professor McGonagall, we're to be given special quills bewitched with an anti-cheating spell." Hermione snaps.
"That's insulting! It's as if they don't trust us!" Ron checks a card, irritated. "Dumbledore again!"
Just then, Neville comes hopping into the Great Hall with his legs stuck together as the other students laugh at him.
"Leg-Locker Curse?" Ron asks.
"Malfoy." Harry deducts, as Neville approaches them amidst laughter from the other students.
"You have got to start standing up to people, Neville." Aubery shakes her head.
Neville wobbles uncontrollably. "How? I can barely stand at all!"
Seamus jumps up, wand at the ready. "I'll do the counter-curse!"
"No, that's all I need... for you to set my bloody kneecaps on fire!" Neville snaps.
Seamus slams his wand down angrily. "I don't appreciate the insinuation, Longbottom. Besides, if anyone cares to notice, my eyebrows have completely grown back!" He then stalks off angrily, showing a large chunk of hair missing from the back of his head. Aubery stifled a laugh, as Ron and Harry smiled.
"I found him!" Harry hands Ron a Chocolate Frog card of Dumbledore.
"Dumbledore is particularly famous for his defeat of the Dark" Wizard Grindelwald in 1945-" Ron starts.
"Go on." Harry nods.
"-for his discovery of the 12 uses of Dragon Blood, and his work on alchemy with his partner Nicolas Flamel!" Ron gasps.
"I knew the name sounded familiar. I read it on the train that day." Harry says.
Hermione beams excitedly. "Follow me!"
"I'll stay behind guys, I need to get this done." Aubery yawns. The Trio tears out of the Great Hall, leaving poor Neville still flailing around.
"Hey, wait, where are you going? What about the counter-curse?!" Before Neville can say another word he topples over backwards, the other students start laughing.
"Here, I'll do it Neville." Aubery says.
"Thanks." Neville groans.
Important question.
Aubery?
or
Eliza?
Comment on which name.
Also, if you were wondering what Aubery sees in the mirror, she's seeing into the future, where Voldemort's defeated, and everyone's happy.
