Chapter 6
Emily's POV
It was a rather humid day, as I stepped outside. The weatherman was talking about a possible thunderstorm later today. It felt like the Louisiana bayou out here, with this high humidity. The sun was out for the time being.
I saw David coming, and he looked rather sad. "Hi, David!"
"Hi, Emily," he said, upset.
"Are you okay? You seem rather upset."
"My grandmother died of lung cancer," said David, on the brink of tears.
"Oh no, I am so sorry, David!" I said, shocked.
"I was hoping she would survive the battle!" sobbed David. "I prayed, that she would make it!"
"David, that was all you could do," I reasoned. "It was time for her to go. You have to realize, that she is not in any pain, no more. Again, I am very sorry for your loss. Do you want a hug?"
"Okay," said David, sniffling.
I hugged David, patting his back, while he cried his eyes out. "It's gonna be okay, babe. Let it all out. Your grandmother is no longer in any pain, okay? Just know that I am here for you, and so are Brad and Rosie. I'll tell them what happened."
"Alright," said David, his eyes red from crying.
I texted Brad and Rosie, about David losing his grandmother, and they were on their way to offer their condolences and support. Then, Jason showed up, unexpectedly.
"Hey, losers!" he smirked. "What's wrong with David?"
"He lost his grandmother to lung cancer," I said.
"Good!" exclaimed Jason.
"Excuse me?" I said, raising an eyebrow, at Jason's response.
"It's good, that she died! That's what happens, when you smoke!"
"Jason, you better get out of here, before an alligator comes and bites you!" I warned.
"I haven't an alligator around here!" scoffed Jason.
"This is Florida, stupid! Alligators are pretty commonplace here!"
"New Jersey, where I come from, there are no alligators!"
Brad and Rosie finally showed up, and hugged David. "You're gonna be okay, buddy?" asked Brad.
"We're here for you, babe!" said Rosie, kissing David on the cheek.
"Aw, is that your boyfriend?" mocked Jason.
"Jason, shut up!" yelled Rosie. "We're just friends!"
"When is his grandmother's funeral?" asked Jason.
"That's none of your business, Jason!" said Brad. "You never knew her!"
"She ain't never coming back!" said Jason. "She made the wrong choice, by smoking herself to death!"
"Jason, stop it!" I hissed. "You're gonna make David cry again!"
"I don't care!" snorted Jason. "Dying is a part of life!"
"Let's order a pizza for you, David!" suggested Brad. "From Pizza Hut!"
"Okay!" said David.
"We'll order two pizzas!" I said.
"I'll have a meat lover's pizza!" said Jason. "And, some breadsticks with sauce!"
"You ain't getting any pizza, moron!" said Brad. "Go ahead, Emily, order the pizzas, while we deal with Jason!"
I ordered the pizzas from Pizza Hut on my cell phone, and also ordered a Pepsi. Clouds started to build up, and the sky grew dark.
"Let me be clear! Your grandmother...." Jason was interrupted by a rumble of thunder. "What was that?"
"Oof, a storm is coming!" said Brad.
"We better head inside! It's gonna get nasty, soon!" said Rosie.
"Why does it have to thunder?" stammered Jason. "I hate thunderstorms! They scare me!"
"Florida gets a lot of thunderstorms, than any other state," I said. "The weather here can change rapidly. One minute, it's sunny, next minute, it's pouring like crazy!"
Another rumble of thunder, made Jason all shaky. "This will pass by, right?" he asked.
"You should get on home, Jason!" said Brad. A loud thunderclap, rattled the sky, sending Jason running like the wind.
"Help!" he screamed. He ran home, just in time, as the rain started pouring down.
"Come on, let's get inside!" I said. We all ran into my house, as the storm was raging on. I quickly locked all my windows. We waited for the pizza man to show up. A flash of lightning, followed by another loud thunderclap, shook the house. It was way too dangerous outside. It sounded like a warzone.
"Hopefully, this storm will end, soon," said Rosie.
The pizza man finally arrived. I quickly opened the door, and paid for the pizzas and soda. "This weather sure got nasty in a hurry, huh?" chuckled the pizza man.
"Sure did!" I laughed.
"Enjoy, and be safe!"
"You too, drive safely!"
I closed the front door, and we all ate some pizza. David felt a little better. The storm winded down, and the sun came back out. The thunderstorm really scared Jason away. He was acting like a total jerk. Seems like thunderstorms are his kryptonite.
One thing was for sure. We would send our thoughts and prayers to David, and his family.
