Buzz Buzz
"Can this night get any worse?" I heard Sophie mutter, holding her head. We were all standing by the edge of the roof, watching to where Kirby took April.
Mikey looked as if he were hiding something so I smiled and gently nudged him, "What's wrong?"
"How do we know that was Mr. O'Neil?" he asked as he looked up at me. He turned his attention away to look at the others curiously.
Leo sighed and looked at the empty Mutagen canister. "Do you know many middle-aged, red bearded bats lately?"
"We gotta go after her," Donnie stressed out making Julie look at him suspiciously. I blinked at that look but didn't comment. Maybe Julie thought that because we each had someone that she should have someone as well.
Internally, I shrugged and looked around wondering where the many Mutagen canisters went. "What about the Mutagen? They're everywhere." I looked at Leo as I spoke, wondering what he was going to do about it.
"April's dad comes first. Let's get back to the lair and figure out what we're going to have to do," the blue masked Turtle finished with a nod. Everyone agreed reluctantly.
So we returned to the lair. The walk there was quiet and somber, everyone thinking about what to do and how to do it. Not even Donnie spoke up for an idea. When we walked past the toll booths, Melanie appeared from the dojo looking at in silence. Naomi followed soon after, blue eyes narrowing a little behind her mask.
The ones that went out on a patrol sat down on the couch. All except Donnie who began pacing instantly, grumbling and muttering. Naomi and Melanie came up beside Raph and Sophie. They all began speaking in low voices which made me curious and look over to try and catch what they were saying. Naomi may have known what was going to go down all together considering her future readings and such. But at the same time... She could be clueless as any of us.
Finally, the small group broke apart and with a sigh from Naomi, they looked at Donnie and Julie who was watching Donnie pace. Finally, Donnie started blurting out stuff quickly. "I can't take it! I'm seriously freaking out! Seriously stressing here!" He took a deep breath while pausing in his walk. He craned his neck back and closed his eyes. "Think calm thoughts... Calm.... Thoughts..."
Nobody said anything for about three seconds. Mikey broke the silence with, "You think he's a vampire? Sucked her blood and turned her into the walking dead?" He raised his arms for a moment, even giving his eyes a glassy look to them.
"Are you," Donnie muttered as he looked over to Mikey. He drew closer to the orange masked turtle and screamed in his face, which Mikey only smiled evilly. "Trying to freak me out!?"
Another long pause. I leaned back against the couch, boggling my brain for ideas. Sensei walked past us, coming from the rooms and going toward the dojo. I watched him, confused as to why he was by our rooms but didn't question it.
"Sensei," Leo interrupted. Splinter turned to look at his son for a moment. I paused, wondering if Leo would spill the problem out about Kirby to Sensei. "Say we're trying to catch a stray pet... Like a cat. What w-"
"A cat!?" Splinter looked mortally terrified. I couldn't help but giggle softly. A hand smacked me upside the head and I turned to see Naomi standing by me but watching Leo and Splinter rather me.
Leo shook his head to change the animal. "A... A parrot...? What would be the best strategy?"
A deep and strangled sigh escaped Sensei as he answered his blue masked son, "Food of course. Any animal can be lured by food." He paused and looked at us all curiously, rubbing his thin beard. He lowered his hand again while turning to Leo, "Now... What is this truly about?" He finished, tilting his head a little with an ear lowering a tad at the tip.
"Nothing, Sensei," Naomi blurted out, making me jump a bit. "Just talking about parrots and stray animals as we always do. You know how Mikito is, wanting a pet and all like Raph."
I couldn't really argue so I smiled and nodded, trying to go along with the act. I had always wanted a cat, but Naomi and the others wouldn't let me because of Sensei being a rat and all. Splinter looked at Naomi then me, and with a raised white brow, left for the dojo again to not ask about this stray pet situation again.
Leo breathed out and looked at Naomi, "Thanks. But food!" He turned to all of us. "Brilliant! I could've thought of that. Donnie, what do bats eat?"
"Invertebrates and other small mammals. Oh!" Donnie pointed a finger up with a grin. "And bugs. The bigger the better."
"So where we going to find a huge bug?" Sophie asked. I giggled, imagining a giant bug flying around.
"Dress up some sorry sucker in a giant fly costume?" Mikey asked as well, poking his chin with a finger. I looked at him with another small giggle.
I heard a chuckle and turned to see everyone else either looking at me or Mikey, mostly Mikey. I gulped, wondering if they were actually serious about it. Sure enough, Naomi grabbed Julie's arm and they left the room. Being concerned, I looked at Mikey. The other boys also left, leaving myself, Mikey, Melanie and Sophie in the main room. I couldn't help but look at Melanie, trying to get an idea of what the others were planning. Were they seriously going to dress Mikey up?
A few minutes later, supplies were being set out in the main room and Julie, Naomi and Melanie were painting some cardboard with bright colors. I watched them at work while I made sure to keep Mikey occupied by testing a few rope sections that Mikey would have to wear. We were all doing something. Gluing, painting, tying, or bending.
When someone was done, they would step up to Mikey with the item they made and try it on him. It wasn't until everyone was done that the finishing touches of taping and gluing were done. When it was finished, everyone took a step back and observed my orange masked Turtle. Julie would step up every now and again to fix something or retape an already taped section.
In the end, Mikey had bright yellow and white wings strapped to a pack that held a cable for a string when we go topside. As for what, nobody said anything. That was more of the boys' idea. He had cardboard pieces connected to his side and belt that held two pairs of stretchable arms with odd hands on the end. And to top it off they added bug antennae to the top of his head and put a broken sunglasses pair on but instead of the darkened lenses there were poked out cups glued so he could still see.
"I kinda feel like... bait..." Mikey eventually said as Julie was stepping back.
Melanie scoffed and shook her head. "Really? What made you think that?"
"No..." Sophie smiled innocently. "Think of this as..."
"Your new super hero costume," Naomi smirked.
I paused at the mention of a new super hero costume. Let alone having it come from Naomi. I looked at her then at Mikey, wondering how he was going to take it. His poked out cup holes looked down at one of his fake arms. He picked it up and shook it before looking at us and, with a gleeful voice, cried out, "Swee-ee-e-eet!
"And your name could be..." Sophie continued.
"Turflytle!" Mikey suddenly shouted, making a few of us jump. "Tur-Fly-Tle! Oh, yeah! I love it! Too awesome..." He shook his head with a smile and turned to all of us. "What're my powers?"
"Well, uhm..." Melanie paused, trying to think.
"You can hang from a rope," Leo offered with a nervous smile.
Mikey nodded and smiled at all of us. "Then lets go! Buzz buzz!"
With a small frown, Leo frown but looked at everyone else. They all nodded, even Naomi and Melanie. So we all grabbed a pair of our wings and started for the lair. While we were heading out, Leo and Donnie put something in Mikey's pack while connecting it to Raph's wing pack as well. I watched and saw a crank. They were planning on having Mikey swing from a rope.
"Next time," Naomi muttered as we climbed out. "Find a way to make those wings like ours, Donnie." The purple masked turtle paused bu nodded, smiling softly.
As we stood on the rooftops we looked around as to where to start looking for April and her dad. A few of us, including myself, had already opened our wings and were wanting to get the show on the road. Within minutes, a few of us held Mikey up so that Raph could start flying up first. When he was i the air and used to Mikey's weight the rest of us followed suit, making sure to pan out.
I kept a close distance with Raph and Mikey since I didn't really trust Raph with Mikey. Naomi, Melanie and Sophie went in another direction while Leo, Julie and Donnie in another. They would pan out to pairs as soon as they were far enough to continue panning out.
After a while of following Raph and Mikey, Mikey started talking loud enough for me to hear, "Turflytle is on the patrol, buzz buzz. His bug eyes see every crime, buzz buzz!" Along with some other choice sayings.
"Would you stop saying 'buzz buzz' after every sentence?" Raph growled, looking down at Mikey.
"I could do that, buzz buzz," Mikey continued, even spreading his arms and tilting them from side to side to get a different angle of the sky. "But I don't think I want to, buzz buzz."
Raph growled and gripped his handles by his face and started going every which direction, making Mikey swing to and fro. I cried out, wanting to intervene but knew if I did and got hit, my wings wouldn't function correctly for the rest of the scouting trip. Mikey was crying out more "buzz buzz" sayings, making me smile weirdly.
After a few of those throwing Mikey around turns, we ran into Leo's group. I smiled at them, embarrassed that I couldn't help Mikey more than I was. They smiled at me but Leo turned to Donnie who was holding one of those folding telescope things...
He was looking around when Leo asked him, "Any sign of Kirby?"
"No..." he muttered while looking toward Raph and Mikey. "Raph, shake Mikey around a bit more. He needs to mimic a fly's flight pattern."
"No problem," Raph grinned. Once more there was more twirling, yanking, and shoving Mikey around in the sky. The rest of us kept our distance as he did so. Mikey seemed to enjoy it from crying out in glee along with screaming out 'buzz buzz' every few seconds.
After a while Donnie cried out, "Kirby at 4 'o' clock!" I looked over and saw the mutant bat going at Donnie, even knocking him out of the sky. I watched as Donnie spiraled out of the sky before righting himself and coming back up to join us to help Mikey.
"He'd headed straight for Mikey!" Leo shouted. "Raph! Pull up! Pull up!"
Trying to be quicker to help Mikey if needed, I put my arms close to my body and narrowed my eyes to watch what Raph, Kirby, and Mikey would do. Raph was cranking at the rope lever at his chest that the boys connected to him earlier while Kirby continue to fly. Right as I thought Kirby would get Mikey, Raph stopped cranking for a second and flew upward, making sure Mikey wouldn't get eaten. I breathed out in relief.
"He's coming back around!" Julie shouted, getting her bow out which made her flight a little screwed up.
Mikey yanked to the side as Raph flew off to avoid Kirby as best he could. The rest of us followed suit. Soon Naomi's team joined us with Sophie and Melanie. They tried to distract Kirby as Naomi lead the route for Raph to follow. Where we were going I had no idea but I had to keep close enough to Mikey to help him if needed.
Weaving between buildings, Kirby followed, making sure not to loose Mikey from his sight. I watched as Mikey pulled his nunchucks out and growled, "Time for Turflytle to take out his arch nemesis! Wingnut!" Kirby got past Melanie and them and had gained on Mikey but the dressed up Turtle whacked at Kirby with a nunchuck to get him away.
"You are not giving Mr. O'Neil a monster name!" Donnie shouted, zooming up to Kirby. Raph flew skyward, loosing his guide for a second.
But what caught my attention was Leo was above everyone, watching like a cat stalks its prey. When Kirby got close to Mikey again, Leo let his wings go and started falling. Falling right on Kirby's back. Not very well landed but still landed on him.
Leo was muttering a lot of things to Mr. O'Neil as we all continued flying, Naomi leading the way still. She seemed focused. Leo and Kirby seemed to have fallen from the sky, the rest of us following in case Leo needed off before they crash landed. But before they hit the ground, Kirby flapped his giant wings and flew skyward again, flailing about as if in a hissy fit for having someone on his back.
I continued to stay by Mikey as Kirby slowly calmed down but I noticed he did from Leo grabbing onto his ears. "Stick to the plan!" he shouted at us.
"There's a plan?" Most of us repeated. Most by meaning all but Naomi's group.
Apparently there was a plan that I did not know about until now. How nice...
