Adriel's POV
It was a cool Thursday morning in California, the sun just rose above the horizon and I stared at the ever changing hues of the morning sky from the clear glass panes of a cafe. The street stretched out in front of me, vehicles flashing by, and people jogging with earphones plugged in.
I took in a deep breath, sucking in the air that carried a hint of dampness and lacked the heavy pollution of the day traffic. The thick aroma of coffee tickled my nostrils, refreshing my senses. All around me, businessmen discussed projects, writers hastily typed on their laptops, long lost friends hugged each other and college students had a bright smile plastered on their lips.
For most of the people there, it would've been just a normal Sunday, but for me, it was the beginning of the worst day in all these years.
One of my closest friends was departing today, maybe forever, and I was supposed to keep this a secret from everyone. I didn't even get to meet him one last time.
I tapped my long fingernails on the rich wooden texture of the table as I waited. A message popped up on my cell phone's screen. My hands reached for it immediately and I opened it.
Logan Walker
Hey, Addy. I'm on my way to the airport. I feel like this is the right thing to do, thank you for being such an amazing friend :)
I looked away from the screen, tears pricking my eyes, threatening to fall. He had been an extremely supportive friend to me. His advice always seemed to work. Watching him walk away from me was heart-wrenching to bear.
Even more heart wrenching was the fact that Claire still didn't have any idea about it. Was, not telling her, really the right thing to do?
They loved each other senselessly and to helplessly watch them departing down their separate paths was a tragic sight.
My fingers trembled as I stared at his text, wondering what to reply when something caught my eye. I looked up and saw James Hunter parking his motor cycle on the other side of the street, across the cafe. I remembered requesting him to be here half an hour ago – I was going to kill him for being late.
I called him here so I could share my grief and pain because, in his company, everything just felt so right. He made me feel as if there were no worries in this world that even the fragile girl like me couldn't handle.
I exited the cafe and stood on the sidewalk, watching him pull his helmet off across the street. He threw a distressed smile in my way as he began to cross the street to reach me, striking his contagious grin.
I was marveling about how important he was to me and how much I loved him when I heard a loud honk of a truck from the down the street. For a while, every movement seemed to slow down as I looked straight into the deep gray eyes of my boyfriend, next, I was screaming in agony.
"James, watch out!"
I guess I was too late, he had already taken those steps and the gargantuan beast of a truck flashed past in front of my eyes, in an instant, it disappeared around the corner in a hasty turn.
Everyone on the sidewalk beside me stared in shock, muttering curses at the rough driving of this truck but my eyes were fixated on something else.
James Hunter stood in the middle of the street, looking as traumatized as ever.
Slowly and carefully, he walked towards me as if a single stride could cause great harm, all the while looking here and there.
He was standing in front of me now, gasping for air, an immensely worried look invading his handsome features "Damn...that was so close. Fuck those crazy truck drivers man"
My mind was still spinning from the horrible turn of events, I found myself breathing heavily. I lifted my hands to touch his leather jacket, gently running my fingers down his chest.
I couldn't feel anything.
"Addy?" he leaned down to look me in the eyes "You okay?"
My mouth was still hung open, my head whirling from the thought of what could've happened if James had taken just one more step. What if he had arrived just a few seconds earlier? Or, what if he had increased his pace just slightly? He wouldn't be standing here with me right now.
"Are you...a-alright?" I stammered as I touched his face to let his presence sink in.
"Um...yeah?" he narrowed his eyes "I'm standing here in front of you, as hot as ever"
I wrapped my arms around him, placing my ear on his chest. I heard his heartbeat, it was in sync with mine.
Is this what it felt like to lose someone you love?
"Adriel? Hey? It's okay" he caressed my head, as of to soothe me, but my heart was still racing from the thought of losing him.
I wouldn't want to lose him, ever. I loved him too much for that.
And then a thought struck me like a bullet fired into my head. My eyes snapped open and I backed away from James, looking at him with my jaw dropped open.
"What? Did I do something?" he asked, worriedly.
"James" I gulped "We need to stop Logan"
He squinted at me, probably wondering if I had lost it "He must've already reached the airport by now, Addy. And moreover, didn't he ask both of us to let him go?"
"I don't care!" I fisted my hands, a painful knot developed in my throat "I...I just almost lost you James and I now realize that I-I just-I love you so fucking much! Claire loved Logan too, she needs to know and Logan has to be stopped"
"What're you gonna do?"
I waved my cell phone in front of his eyes and instantly, placed Claire a call. I chanted her name, hoping like a maniac for her to pick up.
She did.
Before she could say anything, I yelled on the phone "Claire! Listen to me carefully! You know Logan is the biggest idiot ever to walk on Earth, right? Well, he's done something idiotic and you need to know–"
James cut me off "Lower your voice, people are staring"
"I don't fucking care James! I'm fucking tired of getting shit every day and fucking not being able to do anything about this! Claire your boyfriend is leaving California and he's on his way to the airport! You need to stop him otherwise you're gonna lose him forever! I promised him that I won't tell you but I did because I couldn't take it, Claire! It's so fucking hard to deal with!"
There was a minute of heavy silence as every soul standing around me, stared at me, disgusted.
Claire's voice sounded from the other side "What?"
I groaned in anger.
"Addy, calm down" James placed a hand on my shoulder, rubbing my arm "Take a deep breath first"
I meditated for five seconds and proceeded to tell her what was happening. I elucidated to the best of my power and instructed her to drive to the airport and stop him, promising her that James and I had her back.
After hanging up, I looked into his eyes "Did I do the right thing?"
"Honestly, I think you did. That dumbass can't just leave us like that"
I sighed "God, I'm such a bad friend. I broke my promise"
"Yeah right, you're going to hell"
I giggled, punching his shoulder "Let's go, Bad boy. We have a mission to accomplish"
