"I hate waiting. But if wait means being able to be with you, I'll wait for as long as forever to be with you"

~16quotes.com

Claire's POV

I stared deeply into his dilated pupils, our faces just centimetres apart, trying to decipher the meaning behind his words.

"I'm sorry" he whispered, removing his hands from behind my back. Meticulously, he placed his hands on my waist and backed away from me until I was left forlorn with the urge of his touch.

My lips had parted as I breathed heavily when he was far away from me. His head hung low, staring at nothingness.

"W-What?" I asked; my voice came in whispers through my trembling lips.

"I can't do this" he repeated, looking straight into my eyes.

"Why?"

"Because...God, this is so wrong!" he groaned in frustration, bunching up his hair in his hands.

I couldn't believe what was happening, it felt like a nightmare and I just wasn't waking up.

"Why is it wrong?"

I sounded like I was on the verge of crying. I stuttered while I spoke – my mind was whirling like a tornado.

His rubbed his face and exhaled heavily after which he exclaimed "Claire...I don't want us to be anything other than best friends, I don't think I'll be able to handle that"

"You kissed me back!" I bellowed.

"I know! And I shouldn't have, I'm sorry!"

"How do you think I'll be able to be 'just friends' with you after I've confessed?"

"We'll try to forget about it"

My heart was exploding in chest. My eyes widened. My mind was desperately trying to connect the dots as to where I went wrong, what went out of hand "But Logan–"

"I'll get some clothes for you"

"Logan, wait!" I yelled this time, grabbing his complete attention to me "Admit it! You like me too!"

"I do Claire, I really do" he walked over to me "But not like that; I'm not in love with you and I never want to be"

His words cut through my heart like dagger, tearing every little hope that was left inside me.

"Why? Is it because there's someone else in your life?"

"It is because I have no one else in my life other than you, that I don't want to fall in love with you"

I glared at him, speechless for a while. What had gotten into him? "I...I don't get it Logan, if I'm truly the only person then why don't you want to take our relationship forward?"

He squeezed his eyes shut and lifted his head towards the ceiling. I let him calm down for a while but my heart was racing faster every minute. He strolled towards his bed and sat on it, placing his hands on its white sheets, bunching up the material angrily into his fists.

"What's wrong with you?" I finally asked, pushing back the tears that had started to form.

His gaze found my eyes and I saw it. His face had turned red, his eyes gleaming as tears formed in them too "I don't want to lose you"

Nothing, he was saying, made sense to me. I needed answers "You won't"

"You don't get it, Claire" he clenched his teeth in annoyance, fisting his hands on his knees "There's a difference. Now that we're friends, we don't mind our rudeness or fights that much – we forgive each other willingly. But if we become a couple, a single fight can break us apart, completely. And I don't wanna hurt you or lose you. Relationships are disturbing; friendship is...it is calm"

"And why do you think you'll hurt me?"

"Because...I'm not the kind of person you think I am" he spoke in a disturbed tone "Claire, I'm a horrible person. My mind...it's screaming from inside, I'm...I'm depressed, okay? And you have no idea how short-tempered I am. I am deceiving, arrogant, I am selfish as fuck! And I don't want you to see that side of me because if you do, you're gonna hate me and leave me"

"But Logan–"

"I know what you're thinking" he cut me off "That I'm really sensitive and fragile and naive...but I'm not Claire, I'm really not. I'm a terrible, terrible person...just like my father"

The moment he said that I knew there was something really wrong with Logan Walker, something he never shared with me and it was eating him away.

"What's wrong, Logan? Are you hiding something from me?" I spoke softer this time because I realized there was no reason to be harsh to him. There was something disturbing him and I would make situations worse if I don't handle this properly.

He wouldn't answer my question, instead he just muttered, facing down to the floor, his face covered in his hands "I don't want you to leave me, you're the only one I rely on for everything"

I gulped; a painful sting throbbed in my head as I sat down beside him on the bed.

"Hey?" I called for him "If there's something you wanna talk about, I'm right here"

"I don't wanna talk about it right now" he rubbed his temple, squeezing his eyes shut as if it hurt him extensively.

"I understand" I replied, placing my hand on his shoulder "Listen to me Logan...I love you and no matter what kind of person you are, I'm always gonna love you, I'll always be right here I promise"

I reached forward to grip his cold, shivering hand in mine. I exclaimed while intertwining our fingers together "Maybe you don't feel like taking our relationship forward right now and it's okay. I'm ready to wait. I'll wait for you, as long as you want"

He then looked at me and smiled.

My heart might have fluttered a little when he did. I loved to see him smile in my company; I loved knowing that I was the reason.

Tenderly, I placed my head on his broad shoulder.

I felt him kiss the top of my head and the warmth of it touched my soul lovingly "I'm so sorry, Claire"

"It's okay" I smiled, rubbing his arm to soothe him "Take your time Logan, just know that I love you and I'm waiting for you"

Logan's POV

It was Monday when every soul present in the school shot glances in my way as I walked down the corridors of Whitney High and I knew why. They were surprised that Claire and I got back together after she broke up with me so horribly in the cafeteria.

But little did they know how wrong they were.

"Logan!"

I groaned in annoyance. Why God, why? I didn't want to talk to her this early in the morning. I turned around, giving her the most winning smile I was possible of giving "Hey Nat"

Natalie was grinning at me, twisting a strand of her hair amid her fingers "I wanted to talk to you"

"I know what you're going to say. Nat, I'm extremely sorry if I offended you that night, I didn't mean to talk to you like that" I relied on recollecting the night I practically shooed Natalie off my doorstep.

"Aww it's okay" she pouted "I just wanted to say–"

"Loggie!" another voice cut her off.

"Oh boy" I muttered under my breath, running my hand through my hair.

Not her, please, anyone but her.

Breanna stood in front of me, as enthusiastic as ever "You know what? Mr. Arthur appointed me to write an article for the school magazine, about the victory of our basketball team and he said he was going to make it the highlight!" she squealed loudly "I'm so excited! Will you help me out? I want it to be perfect!"

Before I could speak to her, Natalie uttered angrily "Excuse me Breanna, but Logan and I are in the middle of something important"

"Oh I didn't know he belonged to you" Breanna replied to her, mockingly.

My eyes widened and I interfered before things get out of hand "Whoa, girls let's take it easy, shall we? Natalie, we'll meet up somewhere else if you wanna talk, not here"

"Cool!" Natalie clasped her hands together "I'm throwing a party soon and I was going to invite you. I'll send you details later, meet me there, yeah? See ya'!"

Saying that she stomped away, purposefully making her heels click loudly to attract attention. After she was gone, Breanna stared at me, shockingly.

"Forget her, she's crazy" I said.

That made her giggle "So, will help me out?"

I replied saying that I'll think about it. As much as I wanted to be a part of the school magazine, I was also afraid Carlton would kill me for trying to get any close to her.

The reason I was never chosen to write articles for school newspapers and magazines is because I rejected them, always. I didn't want to become a journalist but Breanna wanted to – badly.

**********

Ignoring the voices in my head, I strolled down the soundless streets of California, making my way to Claire's house for the evening, at 7 pm that day.

I had forced myself to forget the pain that kept tugging me from all sides, crushing my heart with its vehemence. I had to focus on acing exams that year – if I fail, Claire will fail too.

She had told me that no matter what, we'll apply for the same college. MIT or no MIT.

I inhaled a good amount of cool air. Gusts of wind swept over the houses that lined the street, making me tuck my hands into the pocket of my jeans.

I bit my lower lip looking at the night sky. For some reason, the night sky always enticed me. When I looked up into emptiness I always feel there is someone else somewhere in this world staring at the same spot and reflecting on their miseries.

The night sky reminded me there are billions of souls out there and there surely was someone suffering the same heartache as me, and they were alive and breathing – fighting it like I was.

It made me smile.

The sound of footsteps suddenly filled the tranquil aura.

The sudden thumping sound of my own heart made me look around me to catch a glimpse of something, anything.

It took a while for my vision to fall on the person standing a few meters away from me. When I squinted, the figure materialized to be more than one person and one of those people was Carlton Hargrave.

My heart gave a violent thud as I backed away from the group.

Carlton and his friends emerged from behind a car. He held a glimmering baseball bat in his hands. Smirking, he tossed and turned it in his hands as they approached me.

He stopped a few feet away and smiled, not in a friendly way at all, and said.

"Let's play a game, shall we?"
