Chapter 31| The Bluemont Insitution.
Song of the chapter; "Outside." By Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding.
A scream pierces my ears, jolting me awake from my deep slumber. Sweat rolls down my cheeks from what I'm guessing was my daily nightmares. The scream again, not too far away now "MOMMY."
I'm out of bed in a spilt second, a baseball bat in my hands. I race down the stairs and stop at the bottom. "MOMMY." She begs again, her voice is everywhere but nowhere at all. My daughter is crying now, she sounds like she's right under my feet. I squint to look around, nothing.
I take another timid step. What if the intruder has a gun? How will you defend yourself then? I ask myself angrily in my head.
My 9 - millimeter pistol is ten feet away, but that would risk being seen through the doorway. I have to do it.
I race across the floor, catching a glimpse of my daughter, sobbing and red faced. I try my best to silently use the combination lock on the cabinet and open it.
Bullets make an awful lot of noise when sliding into the magazine. I slide three more in, making it a total of four. I look around.
"I don't want to kill her." My previous baby murmurs. "My mommy is good, you told me so." My thoughts go to the worst place.
Either way, I inch my head around the corner and her eyes light up. I hold a finger to my lips, and take a deep breath. That's when I see it, my innocent daughter holding a six inch butcher knife in her small toddler hands.
Deep breath.
Three ...
Two ...
One ...
Go.
Voices ring through my head as I step around the corner. There's many of them, probably more than five men in my house. My elbows locked, and eyes level to my own. I see the perpetrator, standing across the kitchen. Within seconds he lets his knife lodge into my lower stomach. I send a bullet flying into his leg.
I crash to the ground, just in time to see his golden locks do the same. "P-Peeta." I mumble hoarsely. I just shot Peeta.
"Mommy!" Our daughter wails.
"Go get Haymitch." I choke out. I don't stay away long enough for his arrival.

I wake, vision blurry, three blobs of color standing at the door of my bed. Colors, that's still all I can see. I try to move, but I'm unable to. I crane my neck, both my arms and my legs restrained to the bed. I start to panic, kicking, screaming, and grunting, begging them to release me. "Let me go let me go let me go."
"I can't." A voice rings in my head.
Memories come fast. Peeta saving my life and taking my nightlock pill after Coin's death. Our beach kiss. Him, trying to ram the butt of his gun into my skull. Him killing our squad member Mitchell. Finnick's last word before death being my name, such a waste of a last word.
"Katniss." My name in someone's mouth drags me into reality. "Katniss, do you know where you are?" The voice asks again.
"No." I croak. "Take these off!" I scream.
"You need to calm down!" One of the men grabs my wrist. "Do you know, where you are?" He asks again slowly.
"I'm dead." I blurt.
"No." He says looking into my eyes. "Your not dead."
"Well where am I?" I ask.
"Bluemont township mental institution." He answers like he's said it a million times.
"Why?" I am angrily. "I'm not insane!" I cry.
"Miss Everdeen you shot your fiancée." He says with a smug look. "You were deemed mentally unstable to be in he public and real world."
"IM NOT CRAZY." I yell again.
He turns to the woman I am now able to make out in my vision. She has dark skin, and tight dark brow curls that are pulled into a ponytail high on her head."Nurse, give her 20cc's of Diprivan, stat, to calm her stressed nerves."
Something is injected into my IV bag, and I reach up to flick the connecting tube. It floods my body, and I feel it course through my veins. I sigh, and it calms me just like they said it would. The two men and woman stand there watching me, my eyes shift between the trio. "Who are you?" I ask finally my words slurring together slightly.
"I'm doctor Ractor." The tall man that greeted my first says. "This is doctor Maggon." He points to the other man.
"And I'm your nurse, Rose."
I take a deep breath. "Where is my daughter? And Peeta? Or Haymitch for that matter?" I ask.
"Your daughter is in the custody of your mother here in district one. Peeta is in our infirmary a few floors away, locked away from you."
"Is he hurt?" I ask sadly.
"Not majorly. Just some extreme bruising around the impact. It was his prosthetic you hit. Not actual meat or bone." He says.
"Good." I sigh. "Can I see him?"
"No." He replies gruffly. "You won't be allowed to see him for a very long time, if ever again."
Tears fall down fast. My entire body begins to vibrate with rage. "But he's my fiancée, you can't keep him from me."
"He has requested no contact for a short period of time while we figure everything out." He explains.
"No, no not my Peeta." I shake my head. "I need to see him, just for five minuets please."
"No, but we do have two other people who have been waiting all day and night for you to wake up."
"Send them in, I don't care who they are just send them in." I say.
"Maggon will stay and watch." He informs me. I watch the man, or Smeltzer, sit down in a chair against the wall next to the main door. He's young, probably a few years older than me, not many though probably in his low twenties. He's attractive, probably has a beautiful girlfriend, fiancée, or wife back home. They probably have a baby on the way, probably half way through her very first pregnancy. Probably scared out of their minds, thinking every possible thing will go wrong.
I snap back into reality just in time to hear the door open and close, and hard soles of shoes come into my room. I relax into my bed when I find it's Haymitch. He's going to yell, most likely ask me what the hell was going on.
Then he does he unexpected, he takes my hand in his and kisses the back of it. "Are you okay sweetheart?" He asks softly.
"No." I shake my head. "I want to see Peeta, and my daughter. I want to go home." I practically beg.
"You can't right now. I wish I could let you, but they won't allow it." He says. "Why'd you shoot him?" He asks.
"He was having a flashback, gave Willow a big butcher's knife and told her to kill me. I heard voices in the house, a bunch of them like five or more."
"There was no on there Katniss.." He tells me wearily. "Only Peeta and Willow."
I shake my head fast. "No! I heard them, I promise!"
"Look, your obviously gonna be here for a while; so just listen to them. Take your medication, tell them what they want to know, and be nice."
"Haymitch I can't stay here..." I murmur. "I don't want to be here anymore." I cry into my empty hand.
"You've been here two days, although it doesn't feel like it, huh?" He asks with a signature Haymitch smile.
"Please, tell them to let me go." I beg.
"Look." He sighs. "There will be a man coming in tonight before dinner, he going to talk to you about what happened. Try and be as sane as possible, if you stay calm and normal; answer in the questions the way a normal person would, you may get deemed mentally stable." He explains.
"Thanks." I nod slowly.
"I'll get you out of here one way or another. I promise." He says.
"Thank you." I nod.
"I never told you this, but I'm so happy for you and the boy. You two deserve the world and I'm sorry I couldn't give it to you." I smile at him softly.
"There's something you should know.." I start. "Peeta and I are engaged, and I'm pregnant again." I feel his grip on my fingers tighten in a fatherly way.
"That's amazing!" He gushes kissing my forehead briefly. He wipes a falling tear before anyone can see it. "I'm happy for you."
"Times up." Maggon says gruffly. Standing to be next to Haymitch. "Gotta go."
He nods accordingly. "Just remember what I said alright?" He asks. I nod, one more squeeze of the hand, then he's gone.
Next in is Rye, he's frowning. "What happened Katniss?" He asks softly.
"He had an attack, gave Willow a knife, and when I came downstairs I heard a bunch of men talking and-"
"There was no one else there.."
"Yes there was!" I counter. "I heard them and I know they were there!" I gasp desperately.
"I'm not here to talk about that, I went and saw Peeta before I saw you." He says.
"Does he hate me?" I question.
"No, why would he be angry? He wants to see you bad. But they won't let him."
I glance angrily at Maggon. "Thought you said he hated me?"
"Weren't my words patient." He speaks.
I huff. "I've brought you these." He hands me the locket, and a folded piece of paper. The sides colored with age. "Don't look until your alone, they'll take it." He whispers.
He kisses my cheek. "I'll be back tomorrow."
Then he's gone. "hungry?"Maggon asks me.
I shake my head. "You've got to eat anyways, it could interfere with your results."
"Results?"
He takes a tray from a table out of my view, and sets it beside me. Meatloaf, old green beans, a soggy piece of thick bread, and a prepackaged container of pudding. "Eat." He orders.
"What were you talking about results?" I ask again. He stays quiet. "You give me honest answers, I eat some of my food."
He sighs, and pulls the chair closer to the bed. "Results, testing your strengths and abilities. The way you can think on your toes and how quickly you can do so."
He nods to the food. A forkful of beans.
"What's your real name?" I ask wavering a forkful of meatloaf in front of my mouth.
"Damien." Forkful of meatloaf.
"Why Maggon?" I eat another bite not giving him time to answer. I didn't realize how extremely hungry I was until now.
"I watched this movie as a child, and it was a robot's name. He could lift really heavy things, and one time after watching it; I lifted the end of the couch. I was convinced i was like Maggon." He explains shooting me a all-star smile. He stands and collects my now empty tray, then comes back to me. "I'm so sorry your here, between you and I: I don't think your crazy." He whispers. "I'm sorry about Peeta, I know you were just trying to keep Willow safe"
"How do you know her name?" I ask. He places a hand I top of mine.
"Once you admitted to the Bluemont Mental Insitution, you don't leave. After that, we've made it our jobs to know everything about you to make you feel more comfortable." He says gently.
"What do you mean?"
"They've tapped your brain Katniss."
