Chapter 19| Big Happy Family.
Song of the chapter; "Amnesia" By 5 seconds of summer.
Katniss's POV;
I step out of the shower, wrap a towel tightly around my and limp back into the bedroom. I gather clothes and make my way slowly back into the bathroom. I set them on the sink, I look up at the mirror. For half a second I feel immense fear, but then I smile and chuckle softly. "Peeta." I call. "Peeta did you do this?" I ask knowing the answer.
On the mirror, the words I love you are sprawled out in the center. Suddenly the curtain of the shower flies open and I shriek jumping onto my broken ankle and applying great pressure. "Ow ow ow, holy shit."
"What?" He asks concern growing on his now frowning face.
"You scared me and I jumped on my bad ankle." I say making sure my towel won't fall down to my feet.
"Katniss I'm so sorry! I was just trying to be cute and spontaneous." He says with a sigh.
"It's okay." I shake my head and smile hoping to forget the pain. "Just get my medicine please."
I close the door behind him and change, then begin to walk into the bedroom. "No no no no." He starts. "You aren't walking anywhere with that foot."
"I'm fine Peeta, really." I say.
"Nope." I look up at him and kiss his lush, soft lips.
"I'm fine." I whisper into his lips. The kiss made me warm all over, sent butterflies to every corner of my body. And made my lips tingle like they were on fire. And speaking of fire, it's back deep in my stomach.
He shakes his head slightly. "I see through your tricks Miss Everdeen, and it won't work on me."
"Fine, then carry me downstairs." I groan wanting to do it myself. But I'm fine with it once I'm in his strong protective arms. I bury my head in his chest and breath in his scent; pine and cinnamon. "You always smell so good." I tell him halfway down the old creaky stairs.
These houses may look beautiful, rich, and brand new. But district twelve hadn't had a victor is countless years after Haymitch. These houses went to waste just waiting for their new owners.
"I do?" He laughs. "What do I smell like?"
"Like ... Pine and cinnamon." I say slowly pretending I haven't thought about this a million times before. His warmth, his touch, his lips, him; the only things I craved while he was in the Capitol.
"Really?" He chuckles "Didn't know that." He smiles setting me down on the couch. I nod and pull him down on top of me, I kiss his lips hard and feel him smiling into our loving kiss.
"I'm glad you stayed last night Peeta." I whisper into his lips.
"I am too, Katniss. I really am, but tonight is the last night. I'm going home after breakfast."
"Can we go together to get Willow? I can't walk and manage her by myself, not with this gimp foot." I whisper.
"Yeah, we can go together." He agrees.
"One big, happy family."
"A family?" He asks. "You want to be..." I turn his face towards me and see his dark eyes.
"Peeta..." I say wearily.
"I'm leaving." He stands shakily and rushes towards the front door.
"Peeta!" I call "come back." I stand and try to go after him, but my bad foot makes it hard to walk quickly. I open the door, and find he's already in his door. I feel the tears on my cheeks before I get back to the couch. And when I'm there I collapse into it, and ball into my hands.
Theres a knock on the door, about half an hour later. "Let me in." Haymitch calls. I stand with my gimp, and waddle over towards the door.
"If you were anyone else is shut the door in your face and tell you to fuck off." I grumble to him through the open door.
"What the hell happened between you and the boy?" He asks angrily pushing past me into the kitchen. He roots through my liquor cabinet, and I stand at the for like an idiot. I peek at Peeta's house before shutting the door.
"Haymitch, can you get my crutches." I ask him. He groans but gets them for me within seconds. "Thank you." I smile.
I sit down across from him at the kitchen table. "Slide me the bottle." I mumble, he does so and I take a long drink of the vile, hot, liquid. It burns my throat as it goes down, but I take it like a pro.
"Your getting better." He notes taking a drink also. His face doesn't even change when the liquid hits his mouth. His body has become so accustom to it, it probably takes pure gasoline to burn his throat. And maybe not even then will it burn. "So what happened with Peeta?" He asks again.
"All I said was we could be a bit happy family, and his eyes got dark. He told me he was leaving and it's been about a half an hour. I don't know where he is or of he's even okay. But how did you even find out?" I say sounding angry at the end.
"I ran out it liquor. Hence why I'm drinking yours, and the boys before he kicked me out. I managed to take one bottle with me." He smirks revealing it from an inside jacket pocket. "Do you wanna walk to the hob with me? Can you walk that far?" He asks.
"Yeah, I'll be fine." I nod, he helps me stand as we walk out of the door. "Don't lock it, I don't have a key." I tell him as he's shutting it.
"So, you gonna go talk to him later?" He asks as we're halfway there.
"I don't know, should i? Or should I wait for him to regain his bearings and come to me? I don't want to overwhelm him." I say quietly.
The arm rests of my crutches dig into my armpits hard. But it's better than sitting at one waiting for Peeta to come back. Or waiting for him to never come back. Which is what will probably happen. "We need to pick up Willow also." I say.
"Sounds fine." He nods. "But I think you should just call Peeta when you get home." He suggests.
"Call him? Why would I call him when I can see him through the window." I ask trying my best to hold in my laughter.
"Because he could go crazy if he saw you, but maybe if he just heard your voice it'll all be okay."
I sigh, he had a point. "Okay, i'll call him when we get home, but you have to stay with me." I poke his arm.
"Can I drink?" He asks.
"Of course." I chuckle.
"Then it's fine by me." We spend over a two hundred dollars on liquor for him, and to replace Peeta's and I's.
My gimping foot and my good foot lead me back into the seam. "Which house did you live in?" He asks me as we walk.
"That one." I point up to the left. All that stands in the spot I'm pointing to is a pile of ashes and burnt wood.
"There's nothing there." He notes.
"Snow's men did a real good bombing us, as you see." I say. He clasps his hand on my shoulder and stands there as we stare at the spot. "Full of memories." I sigh and lean my head on his shoulder. "Do you want to see my special place? Where I went a lot before the games and the war?" I ask. I don't know why I offered it to him, I've never even offered to show Peeta.
"Sure sweetheart." He nods. We walk deeper into the seam, I could navigate through here with my eyes shut. "I'm going to be honest, I've never been back here before." He says in a low tone.
"Theresa first time for everything." I nod.

I waddle back to the fence, I left my crutches at the edge when we came in. I never would have made it through the woods with them. I walk silently with Haymitch at my side. "Is Sae's close?" He asks.
"Right here." I point to a small house. I wrap on the door with my knuckles four times. I smile when she opens the door. She's short, so I look down to her.
"Oh my my, come in come in!" She gushes pushing me into a chair. It's that motherly instinct in here, part of what I love about her.
"Thank you." I smile. "How long has willow been here? And Where is she?" I ask.
"She's sleeping right now, in the spare room. She likes to call it her room. She's been very good the past week."
I dig through my pocket. "Here, for all your help with Willow and myself." I place three, hundred dollar bills on the table. She covers her mouth, and starts to cry kissing my cheek.
"Bless you child, bless you."
"Mommy?" A small voice startles me.
"H-Hi baby." I smile.
"What happened to your foot?" She asks coming closer to me.
"Just a boo boo." I assure her.
"Where's daddy?" She hops up onto my lap and plays with my braid.
"He's at home." I say. It isn't a lie, it's true, but I feel like it's a lie. "We'll go see him tomorrow, okay?"
"But I want to see him today!" She whines. "I miss my daddy!"
"I miss daddy too." I give her a crooked smile. It's so weird to be calling Peeta daddy, it seems surreal that we're parents: that we have a daughter. And while it feels so strange and weird to say those things, it feels so natural.
I know I was put on this earth for a good many reasons. One of them being to bring peace to the world, be the symbol of hope for every man, woman, and child. I made this world safe for my daughter, I was put here to be the mother of this wonderful and beautiful child.
I was put here to be with Peeta, I know God has a plan for me. I know it included no more destruction, he needs me to be there for Peeta. Because no one can tame my nightmares, calm me down, or love me like Peeta can. No one will ever love me more than he does. Not Gale. Not Thom. Not even my mother. I can see it in his eyes, when i walk up to him, or say I love you it's as if I can see fireworks in his eyes. They aren't always full of fireworks though, sometimes their dark. And then I'll give him his space, and he'll come back to me. Because we can't live without the other. He knows that, I know that now.
"We outta get going." Haymitch says. "It's about lunch time, I'm sure jr'll need to eat."
"Oh well she just ate." Sae informs us.
"That's fine, we need to be getting home anyways." I smile. "We'll see you late Sae, alright?"
She nods, her smile showing she's missing teeth. She's always been such a nice lady. I stand and hand Willow to Haymitch, and prop my crutches up under my armpits. "Bye Sae." I smile.
"Bye girl." She smiles. We walk from the door, and the sun is shining bright in the sky.
We walk through the victor's village, and to my surprise Peeta is standing on his porch looking at us. "Don't." Haymitch warns, I feel tears on my cheeks as we walk. I take quick, shallow breaths. Haymitch walks in the door, and I stop to usher Willow in. His hand finds my shoulder, and it sends shivers down my spine.
"We need to talk." He says softly.
"I can't right now Peeta." Tears fall down my face as I turn away from him. "Just let me go, I don't wan to talk right now."
"You can't be mad." He whispers. "Your not mad are you?"
"I-I." He doesn't even let me finish.
"Sweetheart, I know why your angry with me. You have a right to be."
Finally I sigh and turn around. I throw my crouched to the side and wipe my eyes. "Why would be angry with you?" I ask.
"Because I had an attack when you said about us being a bit happy family. You know I love you more than anyone in the world, your the love of my life."
"Katniss, come inside now. Willow needs to use the bathroom." Haymitch calls.
"I love you Katniss, I want to be with you." I nod slowly taking his hand in mine. Please say it Peeta. "I w-want to be one..." He's fighting himself in his mind. I give his hand a reassuring squeeze. "One big happy family."
I fall into him, Attacking his lips with mine.
