Chapter 14| McMurry Factory.

Song of the chapter; "Alive" By Sia.
Katniss's POV;

It was the fourth night of Melody's presence when Gale told me it was time. He let me have my first shower since he took me, and gave me a dress. It was a cheap knockoff of my first interview dress, the red fire one. He made me wear it and wear a tiara. Because he said I looked like a princess.

As I'm picking at my bandages on my forearm, I hear him come in my room. "Are you ready?" He asks with excitement and happiness in his eyes. I nod slowly and he pushes me into the hallway. "This'll be just grand, your dress is perfection. Your hair and tiara are just.... Oh my god. And it's going to be perfect when you do it!" He says, he looks at my emotionless face. "Aren't you excited?" He asks me.

"Excited? No. Ready for revenge? Yes of course." I nod. I grip his hand a little bit tighter, I need some kind of stability. He walks me back into the large room, where the white tiles are brighter then the sun I haven't seen in months.

My breaths are fast like the roaring waves of a majestic beach. That's when I see her, bare clothes; only undergarments. Her skin is bruised and smeared with dried blood. He let's go of me and roughly untied her from the bed.  "Get up!" He grumbles holding her upright. She looks at me with fearful eyes, they plead for me to help her.

I cross my arms over my chest. "I'm not going to help you." I tell her. "Sure you didn't do anything this time, but you took my family from me. Renamed my daughter, then you tried to kill me.  You must pay." I shake my head slowly.

What am I doing? Why? Why am I agreeing to kill this innocent woman? She did nothing wrong, she didn't try to take Peeta from me. She didn't try to do all of those horrible things she caused.

"Let me get the stuff" He smiles a wicked, dry smile at me before leaving the room. I don't hesitate to rush to her and hold her head still.

"I won't kill you, but he won't let you go unharmed. You know that, I know that." I say quickly. I glance to the door to make sure he isn't coming, and I speak again "I'll shoot you in the leg, and tell him to want you to run. It'll make it better for me, and when he's not looking; I'll shoot him in the heart and we'll get away." I whisper, she nods and I step back making sure to scowl when he comes in.

"Ready darling?" He asks with a smile. I nod, and he cocks a pistol handing it to me. He hurries over to the camera on a tripod and hits record.

"Do you really need to record this?"I ask.

"Yes, now go on." He says sitting on the edge of the bed waiting for me to shoot. I pull the gun up, and avert my eyes from her's. "Look into her eyes now, show her you really mean it." He says crossing his legs and smiling like a madman.

I finally look down the gun, I've never had to use a gun to kill someone. Always my bow, or a knife. "Quit stalling!" He shouts making me jump and pull the trigger. It lodges into her right foot, and I hold the gun away from me and look at Gale.

"I can't shoot her like this!" I scream. "I need her to run around or something, it'll make it better." I say glancing at her. Swear rolls down her face, she looks at her foot and grimaces. I will get her out of here.

Gale nods quickly. "What a brilliant idea love!" He stands and begins to untie her, before I can think I pull the gun up and shoot. The bullet lodges in his left shoulder as he looks at me in pain.

I stay dead silent. "What did you do that for?" He asks, his voice unsettlingly calm. "I though you loved me..."

"I just want out." I speak slowly and clearly.

He staggers over to me, and I shoot him again in the foot. I click the safety on the gun to 'on' and look to Melody. "Run!" My strangled voice says.

We start out of the door. We run past my door when I gasp and turn back around. I open my door. "What are you doing?!" She asks frantically as I search the room. "We have to go, now!" She screams.

"Wait!" I plead digging through my pillowcase.

"He's coming!" She screams.

"Go!" I scream rushing to the door and shutting it between us.

"I can't leave you here!" She screams at me through the door.

"GET HELP." I plead and hear her feet running away. I step into the hallway, turning the safety on the pistol off. He's coming at me, slow and staggeringly. Like a drunk man would. "Gale." I say rising the pistol to his face.

Before I can react he shoots me in the stomach. Pain surges through me as I lie motionless on the floor. I breath deep and slowly, until everything fades into black.

I, the girl on fire am finally burnt out.

I will die by the hands of my once best friend.

Peeta's POV;

After regrouping, I rush back into the victor's village. Haymitch and Willow sit sleepily in a ball together by the telephone. When he sees me he stands and moves her off of his lap.

"Well?" He asks. "I don't see no girl." He comments gruffly.

"My gun went off, we were so crowd he took off."

"You blew it boy!" He screams. "He won't come back out of their hellhole for weeks if we're lucky!" He gives me a her shove sending me into the cabinets.

"Don't you think I know that?!" I scream back. "Don't you think I'm not already beating myself up for this!"

Willow wakes up. "Did you get my mommies back?" She asks.

"You should listen to what this girl has been saying all day. She's been saying some interesting things..." Haymitch says wearily.

I bend down to her height. "What did you tell me this morning sweetie?"

"That I heard mommy yelling, she asked for help. From you! But you wouldn't wake up." I look at Haymitch.

"Let's go look at your doors." Haymitch says and I nod scooping up my daughter and kissing her on the head.

We together look at the doors. Front door is fine, basement door is fine. Back door is left untouched. It's when we get to the big bay window in front of the house. It's swung open, the plants in front of it are stomped down.

"And your sure you didn't hear anything? Or see anything?" Haymitch asks me.

"I'm sure." I nod as I shut the window. "I had a really bad migraine this morning and it makes my head hurt just thinking about it." I admit.

His eyes go wide. "Don't you get it?!" He asks frantically. "He took her, and drugged you so couldn't get to her!" He shakes me by my shoulders.

"You mean Gale?" I ask tears forming in my eyes.

"Yes!"

I break down in sobs on the floor. Sure, I may not love her, but I do care about her and want to keep her safe. All of this happened because of me, if I would have just stayed there in district thirteen with her. I never would have met Melody, I never would have made her jealous with Katniss' presence. A small hand is placed on my shoulder. "Is daddy okay?" She asks in her innocent toddler voice.

"No sweetheart, daddy's not." I shake my head.

"Why is daddy sad?" She asks me. I lift her into my arms as we sit on the couch.

"Because I can't find either of your mommies." I answer her.

"Which one do you love?" She asks me.

"Well, I care about them both. But I love Katniss, that's your new mommy." I tell her.

"She's mean!" She remarks.

"No, no honey.." I shake my head. "She's the nicest person in the world. I've seen her do some amazing things."

"Like what?" She asks curling into me.

"She held her friend when she went to heaven and sang her away. She tried to sacrifice herself to save me. She left you and I to free the rest of the people in the world. Your mommy is amazing, don't you ever forget that okay?"

She nods. "Okay." I look up to Haymitch and find him staring at us. "I'll walk you home."

He nods, and we start out of the door slowly and silently. "If you need anything boy, a babysitter, a shoulder, someone to listen to you. I'm fifty- what was that?" He asks glancing towards town.

Shrill screams fill my ears. I look at him, and he nods taking Willow as I run back into town. My feet follow the cobblestone path until I finally see a group of people. "Excuse me, excuse me." I say softly pushing through the groups of people. That's when I find her, she's laying on the ground gasping for air. She has blood seeping out of her leg, and I drop to my knees next to her. "Melody!" She looks up at me, with eyes as round as saucers. "What happened to you?" I ask as I lift her into my lap.

"H-He did it." She mumbles to me.

"Who? Who! Gale?"

She nods faintly. She touches my cheek before her eyelids fall and she blacks out.

***

"You may enter now." I nod and walk into the hospital room. My hands in my back pockets, she's awake. Fully now.

"Peeta." She smiles.

"Hi." She winces as she sits up straighter, but I place a hand on her arm. "Your okay, just be comfortable." She nods and rests back down again. "We need to talk."

"She's in there." Is the first thing she says.

"Katniss is?" I ask gripping her hand.

"Yeah, he has her."

"Where! Melody where is she?"

She lets a few tears roll down her cheeks and is take a few deep breaths. "Look, I know your traumatized. And I know that was scary but she's still in there. We need to get her out, and I'm sorry I should be asking about you but-"

"N-No. She saved me." She finally chokes out. "He was planning to have her kill me, but she made a plan. And shot him instead, he caught her and she made sure I lived. I don't know why, but she did."

"Why would she do that?" I ask quietly.

"I don't know, but she's the one who shot me. She was right about it, how he wouldn't let me leave without blood. They wanted me t-to run around. She said it'd be better for her, then that's when she shot him. She locked herself in her room and he got her."

"Could you tell me where it is?" I ask her.

She nods slowly. "I could yes, but in not well enough to take you." She says.

"What building is it?" I ask her.

"The old McMurry shoe factory outside of the seam." I nod already standing.

"I'll come back for you, I promise."

"Peeta!" She stops me. "You don't have to, just promise me you'll keep her safe?"

I nod and smile. "Yeah, I promise."

Then I'm out the door.

Tears escape my eyes as I run faster than I ever have straight to the seam. My feet carry me there, I take unsure steps still not knowing where I'm going. I've never been to the McMurry shoe factory. But I know where it is. I'm going in inarmed, without a weapon or a chance at winning. All that's fueling me is the determination deep in my stomach. It is the hope of knowing I might be able to get my Katniss back.

And now I stand here; looking at the big block letters of the McMurry building.

My breaths are shallow as I look into it.

And then I rush to it.
