The Romans and the Mongols were the strongest empires of their times with one having 90 percent of Europe and the other 90 percent of Asia and 10 percent of Europe. These 2 empires existed at very different eras but what if they existed in the same years. From the year 100- 500 which was the time in which the Romans thrived.

The Romans had a massive control over Europe with control over France, Italy, Iberia, the Balkans, turkey, parts of the middle east (eastern and South eastern Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Egypt) and north Africa and England, only the German, polish and Russian lands were free from them. They controlled a total land area of 4.4 million square km and were renowned for there military might and organization and there Naval superiority plus their ability of surviving the worst of hardships.

In Asia we would have the Mongol empire having a land area of 23 million square km nearly 6× that of the Romans, their land extended from Southern Russia to Northern India and the Eastern part of Europe and the middle east (Iran, Iraq and west and South Western Turkey). They would include all of western Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Northern India, southern Russia, Korean peninsula, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus and all of East Asia. They were remembered for there superior horse riding cavalry, their archers, their element of surprise and their sheer strength and numbers.

Now if we were to put both these empires together there borders would actually perfectly connect. The middle east (with the exception of the Arabian peninsula) would be divided with the eastern half belonging to Romans and the west to the mongols.

In Europe the border would be between Mongol controlled Ukraine and Poland and Roman controlled Balkans. The only free nations left in Europe would be the wild German lands, the northern Scandinavians lands and the Scottish and Irish.

Now we can have 2 scenarios here. One in which they cooperate and the other in which they fight each other. Let's explore them each.

Firstly let's see what would happen if they succeeded. This would lead to several things. Firstly the German wild tribes would be divided between the 2 as they would stand no chance against both the superior Roman militia and Mongol cavalry. This would result in another border between the 2 superpowers with Germany being divided into 2 equal provinces.

Next up is pure speculation. The Romans would probably learn the ways of the superior Mongol Cavalry and eventually through warfare conquer all of Africa. Meanwhile the Mongols would learn the superior Naval skills of the Romans and finally conquer Japan, south east Asia and Oceania.

Thus the entire eastern hemisphere would be under divided rule between the 2 and they may even help each other through internal conflicts.

It is to be noted that the western hemisphere and the Americas would remain undiscovered as the Romans considered it taboo to cross the Atlantic and the Pacific was too violent for the Mongols. This would result in superpowers rising in the Americas such as the Incas and the Aztecs which could later reveal themselves and unite to fight the Mongols and Romans. Thus their war would rattle the foundations of our planet and change the future as we know it.

Now let's dive into the other possibility, that both extremely expansionist empires view each other as expansions. This would go on in the following way.

The Romans would see the mongols and their traditions as truly barbaric and wish to push them out of the middle east and Europe and the Mongols wanting to expand further and become dominant.

Firstly I'd like to believe that the Romans and the Mongols would have equal chances in a fight. The Roman militia is extremely well organized and efficient while the Mongol cavalries were fast and incredibly strong. And not to mention the Naval superiority with the Romans.

I would like to think that both empires wouldn't be able to gain any major victories and would collapse even faster allowing other nations to spring up. The Scottish may also take advantage of this and unite the British Isles and the Germanic tribes would also try to gain lands and power.

The entire dynamic of Europe and the eastern world would change. Japan may become the master of Asia or that role may fall to India, Germanic tribes may also unite and take all of Europe, or maybe an Aztek or Inca super power would take over the eastern world and become it's masters.  Who knows?
