Chapter 2: Control
Screams fill the thick air as his bluish green eyes land on the pair of scissors that were now jammed deep within the brunette women's chest. Her shirt staining with a dark crimson red color. Her blue eyes wide as she stared up at the tall figure in front of her. Those blue eyes weren't the same sweet ones that use to look down at him during the middle of the night when she would sing him a soft lullaby to help him fall asleep. These eyes, these eyes were filled with dread and sorrow, eyes that no longer saw a young and innocent boy but the shadow of a monster. A monster she had helped to create. The top of her pale white fingertips traced softly across his sharp features as he takes a small step back.
"Carver," It was all but a whisper that grazed across her lips. The very last words that she would ever speak. And for a split second the thought of her had made his stomach turn with regret.
His head tilts towards the side as he watches her limp body escape from his grasp, landing in a pool of her own blood. Blood that was the very same type inside of him. Chaos was all that surrounded him now, his head turning over his shoulder to now see the mess that he has created. Sheets of paper scattered all across the concrete floor, multiple metal desk thrashed across the floor now stood on their sides. Trails of blood scattered the the once white wall, countless bodies of scientist that had worked for his parents were now spread lifelessly across the floor. His eyes searching the large spacious lab. The main lab they had used for the main testing.
His heart beats rapidly against his chest as he looks around at the destruction he has now caused. This wasn't suppose to happen. He stepped over the bodies, carefully. The flashing of red lights spread across the room casting, shadows along the wall. He closes his eyes, sucking in a deep breath as he stops his movement. There's a brief noise that comes from the other side of the wall.
He was coming. Of course he was. They always sent him when one of them acted out. But this wasn't Carver acting out. How could this be acting out when it was never suppose to happen?
She had warned his father a few hours ago that something wasn't right after the testing but he had shook it off saying Carver was fine. They were all fine. That it was normal. But it wasn't. He was covered in innocent peoples blood. His mothers blood.
The metal doors on the right side of the lab hissed opened, a tall man with raven black hair and dark brown eyes walk into the spacious room wearing all black. His eyes scanning the once white pure lab. It wasn't so pure anymore. They had warn Ellis that something had been off earlier today and yet he shook his wife's concern off. He should have listened the older man thought.
She was right. And now here they were. How could they explain this to SHIELD this time?
"Carver." Those words sent a deep cold up his spine as Carver's bluish green eyes had met his cold gaze.
End Of Flashback
He awoke, his heart thrashing wildly against his chest as he tries to grasp for air. And he hates it. The way the memories come and go as they please. Thrashing at his skull like a wave storming the shore.
Clawing impatiently as they force their way back in. The crushing feeling of being trapped. And he hates it. Not being able to control when they decide to come and go. He brushes his hand over his face, letting his finger run through his somewhat damp hair as his other hand reaches out to claw at the cool bed sheets.
He feels the pain of a scream wanting to ripple through his throat but he holds it in. Letting it catch in his throat. Not daring to wake up the rest of the compound. He tries to catch his breath. His thoughts.
The painful memories that haunt him every time he closes his eyes. The cold stale air kisses at his bare flesh, giving him some sort of relief as his bluish green eyes flicker over towards the large red numbers. The clock reading 4:45 AM. He lets the bed sheets slip towards his waist, sweat clenching at his naked chest, swinging his tan legs over the edge of the bed. His feet sinking into the dark hardwood floors as he creeps over to his bed room door.
He opens the door quietly making sure to keep as quiet as he can. He might be awake but everybody else should be asleep. After the debriefing at SHIELD they had all decided to stay at the Avenger compound. It had felt weird at first. Being back here. But the feeling had shaken off a few hours after they had settled in.
And now that he was making his way towards the kitchen the weirdness was back. To think this had been apart of his life once. The mighty Avengers. They had been his friends. And they still were things are just different.
They had a few new additions to the team. Wanda and Vision. A guy named Sam. And with them here now apart of Carver wondered why he was even needed.
Stepping down into the living room his eyes cast over to the large glass wall. He stalks towards it. Letting the view of the large compound take over as he watches the small white lights off in the distance as soft pallets of rain tap against the windows.A soft roar of thunder off in the distance, the wind howling against the glass. Scrapping against it, trying to find its way in.
They always found away in. He feels a heavy pressure settle into the pit of his stomach. And he clenches his eyes shut. Laying his palms flat against the icy glass. Sucking in a cold breath of sharp air.
"Carver?" He snaps his eyes open. Taking a moment to let the heavy pressure leave his stomach before he turns his head to look over his shoulder.
Blue eyes fill with concern as Steve takes a step towards the younger man. Afraid almost Carver thinks. And he should be.
"You okay?" Steve asks, stopping a few feet away from him. "Do I need to grab Bruce? Riley? Maybe Natasha even?"
"I'm fine." He breaths out. "Just a nightmare I had. But I'm fine. Thanks though."
Steve is quiet. Taking in his answer. And for a moment he doesn't believe him but he lets it go.
"It must be weird? Being back here." Steve asks, sincerely. "That's how I felt coming out of the ice. I still don't think I'm use to it."
Carver looks at him. "It's weird being back I guess. With all that has happened since Ultron. I guess I'm just trying to find my place back on the team. Wondering if I should even be here?"
Steve just glances at him. "Carver- you'll always have a spot on the team. Things kinda went south after Ultron. After what happened-"
Carver closes his eyes. His heart pounding in his chest. And without warning he changes the subject. "How are Sam and Wanda adjusting to the team?"
"Good. Good. Really good."
"That's good." Carver speaks, "You ever get Sharon Carters number?"
Steve just chuckles. Smiling wide and Carver even thinks he blushes at that thought. "No, I kinda have my eyes on somebody else."
"Oh," Carver replies heading into the kitchen with Steve. Surprised at the thought that Steve Rogers was actually into somebody. And so Carver tries to dig more."Do we know her? Are are you two dating?"
Steve begins to start making coffee. Pulling two ceramic cups from the cabinet above his head. He just chuckles, pouring an equal amount of coffee into the cups and handing one over to Carver. "You do know her. All of you guys do actually. And we've been talking. For awhile now actually and she's really sweet and smart and she's kind and-"
Steve pauses for a moment. Feeling his checks turning red as he looks up at Carver who is just smiling ear to ear. And it felt like old times. Like he had never left. "I'm talking way to much about her."
Carver chuckles this time. Taking a long sip of his black coffee. "I get it Steve. It's kinda nice to have something to hold onto. Makes it easier when it's all said and done. At least for some of us. I can't speak for everybody but-"
Carver pauses. Thinking of the right words to finish his small speech but instead finishes it with "You should ask her out."
Steve smiles into his cup. "Really? You think so?"
"Who would say no to Captain America?" Carver jokes, and for a split moment it feels nice. Normal.
"Carver-" Steve goes to say but gets cut off when the rest of the team piles in to the kitchen room.
"Good morning guys." Riley whispers, heading straight to the coffee pot.
"Morning." Carver replies leaning into the counter next to Natasha. Who takes his cup of coffee away from him. Claiming it as her own.
He just glances at her. Watching as she takes a sip of the bitter liquid. Raising her eyebrows as he slowly licks his lips. "Morning Carver. Sleep well?"
"Yeah," he replies his eyes still glued to Natasha. "As if I never even left."
