21. Wet Dog
I was running through the forest, throwing limbs of branches out of my face as I ran. The forest I was running in was one of those places which had no palpable reason to exist. It was a creaking shack created by nature to serve as a reminder that things could always be much, much worse. The unnatural, choking mist that swirled and sprawled on the forest floor was the first thing that spoke of a strange sort of wrongness. The smoke made no sound however and only parted to swallow up my feet as I marched upon the rotten deadliness of the forest floor. The sound of mushy and dead leaves whispered from under the skin of the mist. All of that running led me to a fucking dead end. Tall trees blocked my path as I had nowhere to run and hide.
The sound of music made me freeze in my tracks.
"Simon...come back boo..."
I briskly turned back to see a shadow coming out from the mist of a smoke. My chest heavily heaved up and down as the shadow got closer to me. Light blue eyes and pearly white teeth became visible through the mist as a woman came out.
"L-Lydia?" I took a step back.
She said nothing as she kept sauntering her way towards me. Her eyes went from blue to black in a snap. In her hands she carried a small wooden music box. She craned the handle and stopped walking.
"Come back to me Simon... Come have fun with me..." She tilted her head to the side as the soft melodical music took over the atmosphere. She opened the small box and faced it towards me.
A little figure wolf went around and around like a horse from a carousel as the tinker sound of the music kept playing its tune.
"Circle and circle...you keep running Simon...You'll eventually come back..."
My breathing turned up a notch to the point I felt my lungs were dying out on me. The smokey mist starter to consume the trees, trapping me in a box sort of way. Lydia sneered and kept craning the box. Her eyes matched with mine and took small steps towards me. I've never been more afraid in my life especially afraid of a woman. Just the way she looked at me caused my teeth tremble. I scanned my area but there was nowhere to run to. The mist became thick making walls around me.
I couldn't help but to keep bringing my eyes to the figure wolf back and forth. I felt a twinge of fear start to take over me. I made a run again, trying to run past Lydia, but next thing I knew it, one of my legs felt like they were being dragged down with weights. I look down on my leg to see Lydia sprawled on the floor, holding on to my leg with her dear life.
"Don't go boo...can't you see you owe us something?"
"I owe nothing!" I dragged her along.
"You certainly owe me." A different voice spoke.
This time both of my legs felt like they were stuck in quicksand. I looked back down too see this time Brittany holding onto my other leg.
"What the hell?! Where did you come from?!" I gasped.
"Come back Simon...we love you..." They both said in unison.
Brittany's blue eyes were wet with tears and Lydia had a crooked smile on her face. Both ladies held on to me making me trudge in the same place.
"No I want to go! Let me go!" I screamed. I covered my ears as my scream got cut from the dense mist. The melodious sound of the music box surround me as I felt the mist envelop me in its transparent wings. The music got louder and the mist turned into thick smoke.
The figure wolf spun faster and faster.
"Stay Simon...stay..."
*****
I bolted upright from my bed and let out air that I was holding inside my lungs.
It was just a nightmare.
Just a nightmare.
Sunlight seeped through my window, blinding my eyes for a second. All turmoil sleep gone for good. I had no choice but to start my day.
Is this what it feels to be half human?
Humans are weird creatures. They search for perfection in others, although there's no perfection in them. Is there anything truly perfect in this world?
Oh yeah except me.
I gave a cocky smile to the mirror as I sprayed some cologne on me.
"Simon boy you are one sexy devil." I buttoned my white shirt and put over a black blazer.
Hell yeah today was the day and I was definitely feeling it. At last I was going to get my filthy pack and finally go home to my...
I froze what I was doing and frowned myself at the mirror.
To my what exactly?
All I left back there was my wife and my kids but now they are here in the city looking for me. I got nothing to go back to. I was clearly starting a new life here and I was starting to like it. No more Brittany, no more problems, heck no more bills. And after that nightmare, I wanted to steer clear away from Brittany. But even all of that there was still this feeling in me that felt homesick.
Something in me was telling to go back. I'm not sure for what but once I get my pack I have no choice but to return. I slid a belt on my black jeans and gave one last inspection to the mirror. I couldn't help but to remember Angie's beautiful smile. That's all I want from her.
Her smile...
Her lips...
Her lips on mine...
Ugh Gosh I'm starting to feel horny for her.
A long shiver ran down my spine and I quickly straightened myself out and walked off to the living room. Erwin was on the floor playing with his toy fire truck while Albert was gnawing on a empty water bottle while sitting on the couch. Albert's blue eyes directly looked into mine and quickly jumped up from his seat.
"Are we going back home now?" He started to jump up and down.
"What's wrong with here?" I frowned.
"Duh everything!" He threw his small arms in the air and groaned, "I'm booorreeeddd. Erwin here doesn't speak to me and won't let me play with his toy."
"Not my problem. Maybe you should have thought of that before leaving from your mother's side." I brushed past him and headed to the bathroom.
"But dad-" He followed me inside.
"Hey shoo mind your business." I pushed him out and locked the door.
"When will we see mom?"
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. This kid's whining is seriously ticking me off.
"I'm hungry. When's lunch? Can you buy me something? Um dad I need to pee... like really bad. Um actually never mind. Um a little help here I need food. I'm starving!"
He took my last drop of patience away.
"DAMMIT WHAT DO YOU WANT?!" I flung the door wide open to see Albert gone. Erwin had wide eyes at me and frantically looked to his sides back and forth.
"WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT?!" I yelled from the top of my lungs.
Erwin dropped his toy fire truck and ran off to hide behind the couch where Albert happened to be there as well.
"I HAVE HAD IT WITH YOU TWO! LEAVE ME ALONE!" I threw a fist at the wall, leaving a small dent on it.
The doorknob of the front door rattled and suddenly flung open.
"What the hell Simon?!" Jezebel stormed inside the apartment. "For goodness sake I can hear your yell from downstairs! The neighbors will definitely come out with their guns and shit!"
"Oh my-" I ran a hand down my face. "Please just get rid of these two!"
"Are you nuts?! Whatever they did clearly should be understandable. For crying out loud they are kids." She quickly went over to the boys where they hid behind the sofa.
Where this is going, that damn sofa won't save them for long.
"Look I don't want to see them okay? Take them to Nicky's room or something just as long as they stop pestering me."
"Well then," Jezebel narrowed her eyes at me suspiciously. "Someone's grumpy. What happened yesterday that got you in this mood?"
I flashed her a glare and took a step forward. Yesterday happened to be the best day I haven't had in so many years. It was that damn nightmare pestering me in the back of my head. I couldn't take away the image of Lydia's twisted grin and Brittany's lost blue eyes.
"You know what? Fuck all of you." I stormed off to the front door.
"Simon!" Jezebel gasped as she started to gently push the boys to Nicky's room. She closed the door behind her and got all over my face.
"What the hell is wrong with you?! Whatever you got stuck up in your ass you better act on it quick before I shove a stick up there!"
"Stop yelling at me!"
"I'm not the one yelling here!"
"Stop playing that damn music will you?!" I felt my head start to spin. All confidence that I had a few minutes ago, was drained away from my system.
"Simon are you okay?" Jezebel lowered her tone a notch, concern laced in her voice.
"No! I'm not! Leave me alone!" I slammed the door to her face and ran down the flight of stairs. I needed to get out of there. I needed to get some fresh air. I needed everyone to leave me alone for just a minute.
That is all I'm asking for...
Just a minute.
I ran blindly through the streets and arrived at the park. The ringing in my ears finally eased off and I felt relaxation getting to me. This was definitely not how I wanted to start my morning out. The sun shined down on me as I casually walked at the edge of the park's central pond. I just want to get things over with and be like how things used to be.
As much as I wanted to change, change wasn't meant for me. I love the feeling of giving orders, of getting respect, and overall receiving obedience from all the mutts I look down on to. I wanted to feel again...to feel like a man and getting what I want. Not be a confused pack less leader wandering through nowhere ville and having people and vamps telling me what to do. That wasn't cut out for me.
I kicked a small stone in my way and gritted my teeth. The only thing I will miss being here in the city was Angie. But what do I care anymore? She had a fucking mate and clearly holds hate towards what I did to her back in highschool and to what my father did to her specie and family.
It was hopeless having any hope towards her.
I fucking for sure hate my new life.
Once I get my stupid ass pack, I will be back in my mansion and back to my family. Maybe then things will be back to the same again.
My way.
I was so angered with my thoughts that I barely missed the sound of someone screaming.
"Help! Help me!"
By instinct, I looked around and saw someone flapping their arms in the middle of the pond.
"I can't swim!" It cried.
I ran closer to the edge and made out the figure of a small boy. I looked closely and I remember him as the boy who chased my squirrel off.
I stood there and watched as he gurgled and sputtered water out and flapped its tiny arms to stay afloat. A part of me just didn't care and wanted to watch the child drown. It wasn't my problem he fell into the water. Better yet, where was his mother?
So irresponsible of her. Why the hell have kids when you can't take care of them?
"Help me! Help me!" It cried and screamed to the point I thought its lungs were about to explode.
"Why me?" I looked at the sky and groaned.
I took off my blazer and jumped into the cold water.
"Help-" The little boy's head went under the water.
I swam faster, slapping the water to get to the boy before it was too late. I dove in, feeling the water completely soaking my clothes. He was slowly sinking with his eyes closed and small bubbles coming out from his mouth.
The dark indigo water swirles around me, trapping me, keeping me from the oxygen I needed. My entire body is throbbing, my lungs feel as though they've been set on fire. I needed air!
The pond slowly turned into a ocean. Time slowed down making it more difficult to reach the child.
He was slowly going down until I finally grasped him by the shirt and pulled him close to my chest. I went up and finally that moment I longed for, seeped into my lungs. I gasped as my oxygen was returned back to me. I coughed out water and dragged the little boy's body with me.
"Hold on kid!" I tossed his body to solid ground and rushed to his side. Water dripped down from my hair, wetting more the child.
I started to panic.
I pushed down on his chest and got no reaction from him.
Shit I'm too late!
I felt my eyes start to water in guilt. It was my fault it was all my fault! I kept pushing down on his chest, insisting to bring him back to life.
"Come on boy wake up! Don't die on me kid!" I gritted my teeth.
I had no other option but to give the kid CPR.
I gently pinched his small nose together and did the procedure.
After a while... I just gave up.
I closed my eyes and started to cry.
I cried.
The Simon...crying.
"The hell with me why did I had to be so fucking stupid!" I yelled and leaned down on the boy's chest to cover my face as I cried.
"Please...please wake up..."
I was just about to loose all hope when suddenly, miraculously, the boy opened his eyes wide and gasped, throwing water all over me.
"Oh fuck you're alive!" Relief went in me and quickly I started to help him throw the water out from his lungs by patting on his back. He coughed more water out and finally gasped and wheezed as finally air went back into him.
"Kid are you okay?" I wrapped him in my arms. I handed him my blazer which luckily was large to cover the whole child's trembling body.
"I-I s-saw my l-life f-flash before m-my eyes!" His eyes went round and wide.
I couldn't help but to chuckle at his reaction.
All that mattered to me at that moment was that I saved this innocent child's life.
I saved someone from dying.
