Chapter 29

"We got nothing too".

Great, back to square one it is...

"It wasn't a bad idea. For what it's worth, I think she's looking for someone too" Jordan said trying to make me feel somewhat better.

This three day man hunt left us right where we began.

With nothing.

All the time and effort it took to question over three hundred people across three different states. Just to end up empty handed at the end of the day.

"Alright, you guys can leave".

No one moved, the boys looked at each other, a little confused. As if I were speaking a foreign language.

I laughed at their hesitation. "I'm serious, we've been at this for days. Go enjoy your lives".

"What about the rouge?" Patrick questioned.

"What about it? It hasn't been around for two weeks and we have no leads. We've already put as much border control on the northern and western boarders. There's nothing else left for us to do".

Tried was an understatement.

The long days of hopping from different sectors of the pack and questions everyone, to the long nights of patrolling the land.

It made no sense to farther exhaust myself or the boys. "When she shows up again, we'll have more to go off of but as of now, it makes no sense to sit around waiting for something to happen. And that's if something happen".

There was a long moment of silence and again, no one moved out of their seat.

"Seriously guys. Go home" I practically begged. "There's nothing more we can do".

Of course Denziel was the first to take advantage of being dismissed early. "You don't have to tell me twice, let's go Oscar" he said standing up and collecting his things. "Lets go before he changes his mind".

That was everyone else's cue to snap out of their disbelief and leave. The room filled with movement as everyone started gathering their things.

"Where are you guys going?" Cleon asked the two who seemed to be in a rush to leave.

"Party, hopefully I could pickup a girl or two" Denziel said with a grin as he left the conference room in a hurry, leaving Oscar behind.

"Its a frat party. Nola's classmate invited her to their annual Halloween Party" Oscar said

"Oh, well have fun then Bachelor" Cleon called after Denziel. "I'm heading home to take a much needed shower, I smell" Cleon said following behind the two.

"Are the kids trick-or-treating tonight?" I asked my right hand man who didn't make a move to leave my side yet.

"Yes, but I could stay behind and help you".

I shook my head. "No, go spend sometime with the Mrs and kids. Tell them I said hi" I told Jordan as I also shooed him away.

He smiled, gathered his things and insisted I called him if I needed anything.

And then there were two.

Patrick stared at me in disbelief.

"Are you okay?"

His reaction made me laugh.

"It's crack isn't it?" he carried on.

"I'm not on drugs" I told him standing up to head to my office. "It's just that I know you guys have lives outside of your duties. I understand that now more than ever".

"We all appreciate it, trust me, but it's just that the rogue has been an issue for the past two months. You've been obsessed about catching it since it trespassed near your house while Clover was there. What happened?"

"My obsession with catching the rouge was originally because I wanted to keep Clover safe. In the process of doing that I almost lost her completely, I won't let that obsession take me hostage again".

Patrick nodded his head, understandingly.

"Don't get me wrong, I'm not giving up. But at this rate, we're looking for a wolf that's long gone. It's the equivalent to trying to catch a ghost".

It made me think back to Romeos statement a couple days ago. 'For all we know she's dead'.

The longer she stayed hidden or away, the more convincing his words became. Maybe he had gotten to the rouge before Tyler or I did.

"Question".

"Shoot".

"Have you spoken to her, since...you know..."

He was hinting at the little run in him and Denziel had last week. When they caught her on, what looked to be, a date with a man who wasn't me.

"I've spoken to her, but not about the date" I said referring to our short but intimate nightly phone calls and text messages. "She knows that I'm aware of it. I'm honestly not worried".

Patrick chuckled, raising an eyebrow. "You aren't worried?" he question as if he weren't 100% convinced.

"Should I be?" Scratching the stubble of hair on my chin, I stopped mid-stride, turning to momentarily face Patrick. "Am I uglier than him?"

Taking both hands, he slapped them down on both my shoulders. "You're gorgeous kid" he complemented. "I'm just confused. Why are you being so nonchalant?"

Patrick wasn't the only one to ask me that question. I've explained it to Jordan, Cleon, Denziel and Oscar, and now, I was going to explain it to him.

"The night before I left for Bennett's Pack she asked me questions that I couldn't quit answer. She asked me questions that if I answered honestly, it would've not only lead to more questions, it would've also lead to the ending of our relationship before it could begin".

"I asked her to do something that I know is going to be hard for her. She has serious issues when it comes to trust and I basically asked her to blindlessly trust me with all the things that I can't tell her just yet. In return, I have to do the same. We'll talk about her date, but when she's ready".

"Wow" it was all he said until we reached my office. "My guy's a poet" he joked as I made myself comfortable behind the desk.

"Something like that". His choice of words threw me off. I guess once you really think about it, that was deep...for me especially.

"She's not expecting me to be in town until the 2nd. I'm going to see if she's going to that party with Nola. I want to surprise her".

After parting ways with Patrick, I immediately retrieved my phone from my desk to text the only person I looked forward to talking to everyday.

Demarco: Hey lucky charm, any plans tonight?

Clover: Hi! Nola dragged me to this party

Demarco: Why do you make that sound like a bad thing?

Clover: Mother Nature happened today

Demarco: what?

Clover: Lol, forget it. Oscar and your brother are here now and I'm getting in an Uber to go home, I'm not feeling up for partying.

Clover: Hopefully there's still candy left in the bowl that we left out for the trick-or-treaters.

Demarco: Share your ride location with me. I don't trust Uber's.

Clover: I'm a big girl.

Demarco: Clover...

Clover: Lol, fine

Stealing a handful of candy from the dish that my mom left in the kitchen for the kids. I jetted out of the pack house and drove towards downtown.

By the time I arrived at the apartment complex, she had been home for 20 minutes now according to her Uber ride. Every fiber inside of me buzzed with excitement to see her, with my wolf drooling in anticipation.

The door opened momentarily after I rang the bell, with my lucky charm happily holding a large bowl that was nearly out of candy.

She was surprised to see me, as her bubbly mood quickly turned into one of shook. I was just as surprised, but it was because of what she was wearing.

I knew she had just came home from a party but...damn.

She was dressed in various shades of brown, wearing a pale brown mini skirt with nude stocking. She was barefoot at the moment but the heels that were lazily thrown in the corner behind her gave me the impression that she had taken them off not too long ago. What caught my attention and I'm sure also caught the attention of every man that laid eyes on her tonight, was the dark brown corset she worn. It gave nothing for the imagination to conjure.

My wolf howled inside viciously.

I forced myself to respectfully look away from her cleavage and looked her in the eyes. Her normally curly hair was now straighten, as she wore antlers on top of her head. Her makeup was done to give the impression of deer.

As the seconds ticked by, she looked more and more like a deer caught in head lights.

"Trick-Or-Treat?"

She didn't move a muscle and as she tried to pull herself together mentally I decided to be bold.

There was something I've been wanting to do again, ever since the night of her birthday.

Being bold, I took a step forward, easily towering over her smaller frame. With arms wide open, I went in for a hug.

Her shooked state quickly subsided, as she realized what I wanted. A shy smile and a slight blush formed on her cheeks as she moved into my arms.
