Breathe.

With every step I take, my nerves set in deeper. I'm such an idiot for doing this, but it's the only option.

I need to find Kaden.

This morning, Alpha Grayson told me that Kaden visited him. He threatened him, with his mate, and now, I feel like I am responsible for what has been done. Now, I must do what a Purity Pack member would do.

Leaves crunch under my feet, as I wade deeper into the forest. The gift of a dagger is tucked against my palm. I am as ready as ever, to finally face this monster of a man. For the last time...

My plan is simple. Make him bleed. Make him beg for his own survival; until he strains for mercy. Then I will leave him, for Grayson to find. To lock up.

Even with this plan etched into my mind, I'm still having doubts. The element of surprise is what I'm striving for, but what happens if he gets the better of me? I have spoken of my plan to no one...No one who can ruin this moment where I can finally have a valiant heart.

For once, I want to be one step ahead in this game.

I come to a stop, in a place that I think is ample. I'm am positive Kaden will hear me, and come for me the moment I show myself.

"Kaden!" I scream.

My voice echoes of tree trunks, radiating across through the woods like a siren. I make myself sound desperate and indisposed. Perhaps Kaden will get here faster if he thinks that I am nothing but vulnerable.

"You win, okay! I surrender..." I call out again. That's bound to get his attention, wherever he is.

Nothing. For five minutes, I await for my calls to be answered, but nothing happens. Resting against the base of the tree, I pray to the Moon Goddess that my plan will work.

Hope was almost lost, when suddenly, a hand comes out from behind the tree I lean against, and pulls me around the other side. Gasping, I'm pressed against a hard, warm chest. When I gaze up, I'm met with the cruel, dark eyes, of Alpha Kaden.

He's smirking, of course.

"You called?"

My plan was to immediately stab him straight in the heart, and run. But the moment I feel his body pressed against mine, I'm left breathless, and my mind has been flushed out.

"I-I," I can't help but stutter incoherently.

Slowly, he backs me up, until I feel the base of the tree against my back. He holds one of my wrists against the tree, while my other one is tucked behind my back. My plan would be ruined if he found out that I was holding a knife in my hand.

"I've missed you, Mara," he murmurs. For a moment, I almost consider that he's serious. But the gleam of amusement set like stone within his eyes will trick me no longer. My fingers press the blade of the dagger even closer to my skin.

"The feeling isn't mutual," I snap.

He chuckles deeply. "I see you're still a smart talker. Grayson teach you nothing?"

The word of Grayson makes me frown. He told me of his mate, trapped within the Vengeance Pack. I will do anything to stop myself from going back there.

"So tell me, Mara, why you called for me, when you've put so much effort in getting away."

This was the moment I've been waiting for. All it would take is one jab in the chest with the knife to wound him enough to disable him. Not to kill him of course.

Yet his proximity has rendered me useless. As I feel his leather gloved hands caress my arms, I can't help the way I'm relaxing. But I need to clear my head.

"I want you to release Grayson's mate," I say confidently. Truly, I do want that, but it's not the reason why I am here.

Kaden raises an eyebrow speculatively.

"Lexia? You want me to release her?" He question, as if he and believe it. I swallow, wishing I wasn't so bad at lying.

"I do."

"Well, you don't seem as though you're in a very good situation to barter for something like that," he say, shaking his head slowly. He's right. I'm pressed back against a tree, with an Alpha who could murder me at any second.

I'm not afraid.

"Please..." I drawl, my words falling away at the ends. I'm not quite sure what I'm begging for, but I'm filling up time because I'm pretty sure my hand is stuck behind my back.

He smiles wickedly.

"You might just have to...Convince me," he murmurs in my ear. My jaw clenches, as I force myself to stare into his eyes. I want to see the surprise in his eyes as I stab him in the chest with my dagger.

"How?" I question, my voice a breathy whisper. He smiles, and suddenly it dawns on me how close his face is to mine so much so, that I can feel his breath mixing with mine. I suddenly jump, as I feel his hand squeeze my waist roughly.

I won't stand here and deal with this.

In one fluid movement, I pull the knife out from behind my back, and sink it deeply into Kaden's chest.

He stumbles back in surprise, letting me go. His hands fly to the knife embedded in his chest, before he yanks it out. And what I see, makes me want to scream.

The knife is not covered in red blood like expected. Instead, I see thick, black blood dripping from the blade. And I realise, with a sinking heart, what I've done.

I haven't just stabbed the man. I've poisoned him.

But what kills me most, is the look in his eyes, as he falls to his knees in front of me, dropping the dagger onto the grass.

"No...no, no," I stutter. I fall in front of Kaden, grabbing onto his shoulders. Whatever poison Grayson had this dagger laced with, it's working fast.

"I swear I didn't mean to do this," I say desperately.

I had meant to stun him. What I wanted, was to wound him enough to weaken him. Not to potentially kill him with poison.

He smiles weakly, before toppling to the ground in front of me, face first. I'm quick to pull his shoulder over, so he's lying on his back. He stares straight at me, betrayal swirling deep within my eyes.

"What do I do?" I question frantically. Pressing my hands against the wound on his chest, I attempt to stop some blood flow. It's the only thing I can think to do, through the fog of fear across my mind.

"Tell me you love me..."

I pause, gazing up at Kaden's face. It's deadly pale, and I can see the poison surging through his veins. He's dying, right in front of me.

"What do you mean?" I question, not sure I heard him correctly.

Weakening by the second, he reached his hands up, and strips one of his gloves off. I watch it hit the grass in front of me. Then, I meet his pleading eyes.

"I can't die until you know," he murmurs, his voice strained and breathless. His bare palm is extended to me, making me stop for a second. He wants me to touch him...

And I do. I take his hand within my own, wrapping my fingers around his dead cold ones. And I gasp.

Sparks.
